General info
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
    On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold. You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold. Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

What is this?
Game prices in the Xbox store have a UTC end date associated with them. These dates generally fall into 5 categories :
  1. The item is currently on sale. These are usually the weekly sale items that end Tuesday mornings at 09:59:59 UTC.
  2. The item will go on sale, usually within 2-3 weeks. These are usually set to switch at 23:59:59 UTC, like the weekly sale on Monday evenings. Some of the major annual sales (Spring, Summer, Black Friday, Holiday) start on Thursday evening UTC, and some times appear to be random.
  3. The item is on Game Pass and is not currently or going to be on sale in the next few weeks. Third party games generally cluster around 09:59:59 UTC on the 1st and 16th of each month. Currently, at least one game is associated with every 1st and 16th through January 2025. The dates then spread out, ending with Human Fall Flat on July 1, 2028.
  4. First party and EA Play titles are farther out, starting in 2049, with many in 2799 and 9998.
  5. No date - some items do not have a price and so don't have a date. If the item is part of a bundle that has a price, the date from the bundle is used.
The list below uses the dates associated with games on Game Pass and EA Play. Time stamps in red are the regular Game Pass departure times and titles in red are confirmed to be leaving, either from Microsoft's regular news postings or by devs / publishers. Items available through Game Pass Core, currently on sale or not available for purchase are also color coded.

The date associated with a Game Pass game is not a guarantee it will leave on that date, but since March 2023 when the price data started getting analyzed, every game that's left Game Pass had been flagged as leaving on that date. It's given a number of people an extra heads up on the generally 2 week notice Microsoft provides.

The Phoenix Rising game (I can't remember the whole name). I only heard mention that the playable demo would be on Stadia, but admittedly I was only half paying attention. It was actually the only game that interested me.

EDIT - It looks like the whole game is Stadia exclusive.

Yeah I was gonna say no where did it say it was Stadia exclusive, and I was pretty sure the name and release date leaked via an Xbox store posting.

I would wager a good sum of money the original price was 499 and 599. Still think it might be the case. Honestly I still don't see how just removing the disc drive is getting the price down 100 dollars when the xbox SAD was only 50 dollars cheaper.

If they go $399 for the digital version I will be getting both, so hope they do. Only physical PS4 game I own is God of War that came with the system and that's been on sale for $10 many times so can easily grab that if I feel the need.

The Series S wasn't a well-kept secret. But $299? MS knows that $300 is a killer price for next gen entry level, and most people are not fully ready for 4k. Honestly, the all-digital is a bigger gamble than anything else, but Game Pass levels that concern considerably since you have way more options than just buying digital games.

Before announcing the Series S, $499 for the X was a reasonable guess. $100 more for a fancy PS5 with the popularity of the PS4 could have been realistic, with the all-digital matching the X price. I look forward to reading about the internal conversations and meetings around this new generation launch in 10-20 years.

There's nothing like that on the site right now, not in Desktop or Mobile mode. The way that they did it last time, was emailing people that the dlc items had been added to their account. Since two of the dlc pieces were from games that aren't even out yet, Ubisoft said that they would be unlocked automatically when you purchased the games. This time, there was just a vague mentioning of free stuff on the page (which has now been mysteriously removed) and zero mention of what it actually was.

Such nonsense. Sony's price was probably always fluid or they would have announced it already. Acting like Microsoft upended the industry with their pricing is insane. Most people predicted the Series X was going to be $449-549 and the Series S was going to be $300-$400. Pretty sure the minds at PlayStation were well aware of this as well.

It was a mask for watch dogs, a melee item for hyper scape, xp booster for for honor and a charm for rainbow six. I watched on twitch but checked their website after seeing their post asking about unlocks and that's where I saw what I described in my post. It was maybe 10 minutes after the stream had ended.

Edit: if you want to try for yourself I checked my history:

It sounds like as of now, the Xbox Series S/X is using proprietary harddrives like the 360 used, and only a 1tb expansion drive has been leaked as being available for $220. Meaning that if you want a decently sized harddrive, you need to pay $520 for the S (1.5tb) or $720 for the X (2tb). Sony has only revealed that the PS5 with disc drive will have a 825gb drive, and that the digital one will have a 1tb drive. They seemed to say that their type of harddrive is so advanced, that it won't be available on the market to purchase yet when the PS5 is first released. So, I expect that somewhere down the line they will also be giving us officially branded and over priced expansion drives to buy.

We already knew the SX and SS would only support proprietary expansion. The PS5 only has 825GB regardless of model. I’m not sure where you heard the digital version has more storage.

Not from what I've read. Now, the SSD expansion drives on PS will have to meet whatever requirements Sony sets and theoretically, that could drive pricing up at first, but in the long run as drives drop in price it will give them an advantage over the SX. I'll be interested to see smart delivery and the overall storage sizes of these games.

Didn't they say you can house SX games on an external drive but they're only playable off the SSD or did I dream that lol?

Probably $599 ... there were reports earlier this year that people were going to surprised by Sony’s price point and not in a good way.

Now that MS has a more powerful console at a cheaper price, they’re probably scrambling to lower the prices. Buy a launch model because it wouldn’t shock me if they start using cheaper parts in follow up waves.

There's been nothing about a 1TB drive for the PS5 digital edition, the odd 825gb size is actually tied into how their SSD tech is working at a system level. Why it's slightly faster than the Series systems.

You can house the S/X games and move them back and forth to the SSD. Hopefully that's very painless.

In no world was the PS5 price going to be $599. In no world was the Series X going to be $599. As much as people want to paint Microsoft as the good guy for saving our wallets, that just isn't the case. Though props to Microsoft for revealing their price first, even if it was through a leak.

So, was anyone really clamoring for a remaster of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time? It was a fine game back like 15 years ago (holy fuck I am old), but the main novelty of the game was the whole time controlling feature and that isn't as impressive now. Also $40 for a six hour game with really no replayability is a bit too much. Even the story, which was charming is tarnished by the stupidly gritty and heavier combat focused sequels. So just who is it for and at that price?

Probably not many, it'll drop like a rock and be on sale for $10 in no time. But hopefully it comes to Game Pass because I'll give it a go if it ends up on there. I like the original games enough.

 
I've never played it. But, if it fails, I am worried that Ubisoft will use it as an excuse to shutter their first studio in India. I just don't understand why Ubisoft didn't let them create an original IP, or at least a brand new Prince of Persia game with a huge open world, RPG elements, and tons of pointless microtransactions with seven different kinds of game currency.
 
So overall really happy that there is two models and how it's basically just like a weaker PC graphically for the S. I mean I know there is less storage too but overall pleased that there is no real CPU performance loss which is key. Going to get the X for the bigger HD and disc drive.

I know preorders are on the 22nd but does anyone have an idea how online retailers will be handling preorders? I ask because I'm debating possibly taking half a day of work on the 22nd if it's like 3AM EST preorders start. Not that I need a Series X at launch but I want one at launch so I can sell my Xbox One after I get my Series X for the most money possible.

My bet is that the remaster is just to gauge interest in the IP. If it hits a certain mark then maybe we get a proper new installment, if not then the studio will move on to a different project.

Side note: Immortals Fenyx Rising looks right in my wheel house, can't wait for this game.

 
Gears 5 1 year anniversary has 6x XP until Monday (3x XP plus boost).  There's also an anniversary weapon skin set available for free in the game store.

Actually, I believe preorders would start at midnight EST, which is 9pm PST of the 21st. It's most likely first come first served, and all of the Series S consoles will probably be the first to be snapped up in less than 5 minutes, leaving people in a crazy mad dash to preorder the Series X instead, so that little Timothy won't get decimated by his friends at school in Fortnite.

Black Friday next year (2021) is going to be bad for game sales. We'll have five new consoles that are about a year old, Series S, Series X, PS5 Digital, PS5 Disc, and the rumored (but most likely real) 4K Switch 2.0. I feel like retailers won't do much to discount PS4 or Xbox One games next year, because the majority of games still being released will have free Series S/X or PS5 versions attached, so if somebody doesn't want to pay more for the newer console version, they just go snatch up the version for the previous console. It will also be the start of game companies fully developing games for the new consoles and leaving the old ones behind, which means a lot of games released right before Black Friday, and not getting big discounts at all. And, we all know that Nintendo rarely lets games go on sale anymore. Plus, the fact that 2 of the 5 consoles being completely digital means that Sony and Microsoft will have a large amount of players completely by the balls when it comes to digital game sales now. It's probably going to become like the Switch, where only tiny garbage indie games get decently discounted.

Should have been the whole trilogy redone in a new engine, like the Crash and Spyro games. I know those games are less technically complex as PS1 games but they are similar in length and Crash even has more replayability for completionist types.

Yeah, the 825GB size is related to their 12 channel SSD controller. The PS5 SSD is twice as fast in raw and compressed modes than Xbox Series. It's one of the the only areas where PS5 has a performance advantage.

This. Though, if they're going to remaster one, it should've been the 2008 cell shaded one in my opinion. I know it's a bit divisive, but that game was gorgeous and fun to play. Wish they'd do a proper sequel to it.

Playstation 3 launched at $599 for its top of the line model and that was in 2006. Not sure why you think "in no world" a disc-based PS5 couldn't go for the same price.

Because the PlayStation brand was nearly destroyed for releasing at that price point even though they had a $499 cheaper option. Sony is on record as saying $400 is the sweet spot for console pricing. Sony and Microsoft were reportedly playing chicken on pricing and if either came out at $599 the other company was surely going to undercut. The economic situation is far worse than it was in 2006 even with inflation factored in. The BOM suggested $550 at the most. Sony reportedly upped the production to double meaning they expect high demand and $600 is only a price hardcore fans would pay. Probably other reasons I can't think of right now, but you get the idea.

This is a world where many people also have smartphones that cost over $1,000. At some point we may see a 3 sku new system introduction where they offer a starter system, a fully featured and then crazy over the top model.

Cell phones are a near necessity where game consoles are a frivolous expense and the 2 really should not even be compared. Also the people who buy flagship $1000 phones is dwindling down which is why $400-$600 midrange phones are dominating the market.
