General info
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
    On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold. You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold. Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

What is this?
Game prices in the Xbox store have a UTC end date associated with them. These dates generally fall into 5 categories :
  1. The item is currently on sale. These are usually the weekly sale items that end Tuesday mornings at 09:59:59 UTC.
  2. The item will go on sale, usually within 2-3 weeks. These are usually set to switch at 23:59:59 UTC, like the weekly sale on Monday evenings. Some of the major annual sales (Spring, Summer, Black Friday, Holiday) start on Thursday evening UTC, and some times appear to be random.
  3. The item is on Game Pass and is not currently or going to be on sale in the next few weeks. Third party games generally cluster around 09:59:59 UTC on the 1st and 16th of each month. Currently, at least one game is associated with every 1st and 16th through January 2025. The dates then spread out, ending with Human Fall Flat on July 1, 2028.
  4. First party and EA Play titles are farther out, starting in 2049, with many in 2799 and 9998.
  5. No date - some items do not have a price and so don't have a date. If the item is part of a bundle that has a price, the date from the bundle is used.
The list below uses the dates associated with games on Game Pass and EA Play. Time stamps in red are the regular Game Pass departure times and titles in red are confirmed to be leaving, either from Microsoft's regular news postings or by devs / publishers. Items available through Game Pass Core, currently on sale or not available for purchase are also color coded.

The date associated with a Game Pass game is not a guarantee it will leave on that date, but since March 2023 when the price data started getting analyzed, every game that's left Game Pass had been flagged as leaving on that date. It's given a number of people an extra heads up on the generally 2 week notice Microsoft provides.

No doubt something else will have to go up in price. Probably not for another year though thanks to this bonehead move.

I think it was last year before the new system they said they weren’t going to increase the price of GPU anytime soon. I can’t remember the exact phrasing but I assume it’ll go up either before this Xmas or early 2022. Hope they remember this backlash and don’t raise it too much. Incremental increases are much easier for any consumer to adjust. I’m glad they reversed course and opened f2p multiplayer without subscription but this still won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
 
I'm sure somebody in the company is telling some investors or non-gamer higher-ups "I told you so". I absolutely believe if they continued with it they would have seen a massive drop in online players.

That's the thing with something the size of MS, this might have been something that Phil couldn't directly control for a "minute" then "minds were changed" after the backlash hit. The "nugget" of giving people access to F2P games outside of Gold, which should have just always been the case seems a weird decision to come up with in 12/18 hours. This whole thing is a bit weird.

 
They'd really have to wait until they get a steady flow of first-party games to raise the GamePass and Ultimate prices. Just look at that joke of an exclusives list from a few days ago. Only other justification would be stronger third-party support instead if the occasional big game on day one.

Both Xbox and Playstation have users make accounts for their services.  Imagine if next console release, they required you to have a minimum 1 year account and so many achievements/trophies to buy a system from the first batch.  You could buy it from any retailer, but every preorder launch system would have your gamertag printed onto it.  During the preorder you would supply your account name, Microsoft would have to verify it, and then the order would go through.

It could be neat if every retailer had a specific coloring for the printing, allowing you variation from where you get it.  This could basically circumvent resellers, as no one would want your name on their system.  It could also give a value to achievements and trophies if you were required to have so many points (nothing too outrageous, just something to prove you play on that account).

Console makers and retailers just want the consoles to sell. They may make a marginal effort to reduce scalping to appeal to consumers, but at the end of the day, they're just happy they sold the systems.

If anything, it's probably better for them as a company if it's easier for new players to get their hands on the system. The diehard Xbox fans will get one anyway, even if they have to wait a few months. 3rd party resellers would still be a problem, but retailers just need better bot protection, really. Limiting first batch sales to players with X number of trophies or achievements is never going to happen.

If you want to see an updated version of the "how to trade used games on ps4" ad, then sure. There is no incentive for both companies to stick to this, if they even bothered to agree in the first place.

A much simpler solution to curb reselling would be to limit quantity per billing address. Never forget that falsifying billing addresses was the first shot that kicked off the Oman Wars.

Hard to say, looking at the horizon I'd guess Halo Infinte at $70 would be a hard sell when a large chunk of the game will be free. Beyond that we have a bunch of new IPs or new studios working in old IPs. Maybe Bethesda's games?
 
I mean if all MS games, including Bethesda, are on GamePass increasing the price of the games themselves would certainly be another way to drive more people to GP subs.

I think they felt obligated. The F2P was a point brought up by almost everyone that complained about the price hike. "PlayStation doesn't require you to pay for online services with F2P games and now MS wants you to pay $120/yr for your kid that only plays Fortnite." - was a common trend. So at that point, even backpedaling wasn't going to be enough.

Well, at least something good came out of all of this.

Fair, I've taken a break from the internet rage the last couple years so I don't know how hard the hammer was hitting. I can't say I'm not even more concerned that they didn't foresee this is exactly what would happen. I know "We believe in Phil, get these games out already" but sometimes there are just weird things, maybe another influence inside MS on this one he couldn't control. 

 
Pretty sure I already know the answer to this but...Does GPU work the same as game sharing? My Dad is currently paying $15/month for GPU which is insane but I told him I thought we can just set his Xbox as my home system (it is actually my old Xbox One) and we could share it since I am covered on GPU till 9/23.

Yep, I game share GPU with my wife. (She has a separate Xbox that I have set as my "Home Xbox")

Damn you free play weekend! Now I want to buy KoA Re-Reckoning. It’s not a complete remaster but compared it to my 360 copy and looks pretty enough and much smoother that I want it.

Guess the sale and 15% CashApp boost is enough to lure me into their trap....

I see where you are coming from here but would there not be some marketing incentive to reward those who are embedded in your ecosystem or present value for being embedded? I got the impression MS is gunning for the subscription biz, not the console biz...

I thought it was odd to do a launch during the holiday season and not be able to fill the demand...why not fill all those existing users orders during non-peak sales season based on "seniority" by whatever measure since they are going to bite anyway, then dump it on the masses during the peak buying time?

Not saying I'm right or anything, just seems a bit more logical. Maybe the data doesn't support something like this...but companies in general are not necessarily good at marketing anyway...most probably just luck into stuff.

That's so they can do a more reasonable price hike later after this furor dies down without everyone being upset about F2P and Fortnite kids again. I don't know what the heck MS was thinking this time around, doubling the price was just stupid, but I expect to see Gold increase to $70-$80 per year within the next year or so just to push people toward GPU.

 
whats everyone using to charge the controller on the Series X?? i dont think they make a plug and play kit for it yet.... any certain brands of rechargeable batteries i should get?? im seeing Energizer rechargeable batteries are they any good??

Microsoft had a new play and charge kit ready for the preorders so I included it in mine.

No man. It's just too much work for no gain. In fact, might be negative.

Right now they have the hype going. Supplies are scarce. As soon as a drop happens, people just buy without thinking about it at all. People are mad at scalpers. Very few are mad at microsoft.

Why would they create a bunch of hoops for people to buy the console at launch. Oh they gotta have had an account. Oh they have to have some sort of gamerscore. Oh you're a PS guy who might want to switch to xbox? Sorry bro, you're screwed. How you gonna have retailers verify this in real time? If you cut out the retailer, then you have a problem with your retailers. None of this makes sense.

If they wanted to reward long time members, all they have to do is send everyone a $60 gc who has been with live for 10 years or whatever. There's no good reason for msft or sony to do what you're proposing other than it benefits you.

Only 120 points left and I got that 10K challenge done. Also if any of you got a few stragglers left, WWE 2K Battlegrounds is free to play weekend and I got 400 or so achievements in that in 30 minutes. Could get more, but eh, ehhhh.

 
Heads up I randomly came across a game called Project Warlock that’s on sale for $12. It’s only a measly 20% off but I decided to pick it up based on the positive reviews and it’s a blast. It’s like a retro Doom/Hexen style game but super well done and the gunplay is spot on

Hey, if you havent done it yet, I grabbed 150G in less than 10 mins with Full Throttle Remaster on GP. Small file size too.

Also, they have incentive. They track usage and spending habits. Targeting to ensure these people get the system first makes complete sense. They make no money on system sales. They do make it on players buying Games, DLC, Controllers, Online Subscriptions and Microtransactions. The last one is probably the biggest thing to seek, since many big games have them. This would easily be PR spun into early access, and still push people into seeking what they're missing out on.

Constantly in this thread people post about getting an exclusive $5 or more offer (from Xbox, Best Buy, Amazon...), and other talking about how they don't get that because of spending habits. Likewise, in this thread people were eager to get Day One marked Xbox Ones last generation, with some even trying to get the Day One Xbox Live card. People even wanted that special Project Scorpio system for similar reasons. People like being singled out and getting exclusives. The same way that people were going on about being lucky enough to secure a preorder, this would basically be that. "Dude, Xbox sent me an offer for early access of an Xbox Series!!!"

Ensuring you immediately reach your target market, those that likely will spend the most, is a brilliant marketing strategy. It still creates the same shortage hype, but also creates a demand to be active in the Xbox ecosystem to get first dibs. They eventually will have enough supply to hit the broader market (likely 6 months from initial release), but will have hit the key market of supporters to help offset the system cost loss.

They could do the same thing when they do eventual revisions to consoles, ensuring people keep up a sort of rat-race to be the first to get the new toy.

By now I think I'm at the I can go back to playing long ass games and my PS4 on the side and I know I'll get there naturally before this promo ends next week, but thanks. Also I still got a bunch of games on the side I can use for the next time they do this dumb promotion and I'm dumb enough to push everything to the side to get achievements quick.

 
Just finished Donut County. A fun little 1K GS full of adorable trash pandas. Glad I played it.

I’ve got Day of the Tentacle lined up next towards the 10k

How to buy a Series X Pro: Be a longtime MS subscriber, spend $x on games in the last six months, check emails constantly, hope, buy through MS web store only.

How to buy a PS5 Pro: Go to your favorite retailer online or in store.

Sounds like any easy marketing victory for Sony, exactly like the ad where they dunked on MS's plans for used physical games.

It would be 100000000% easier to just send out a coupon to longtime subscribers for $20 off and limit quantities by billing address to combat bots and resellers.

Don't know if I'll add much more to the gamerscore challenge. I'm at like 2.2k earned. With 4 days left I could probably get close to 10k but have been enjoying playing stuff at my own pace right now. If the challenge was a couple weeks later I would've done it no problem. I'm finishing Scott Pilgrim on 360 (after 10 years) after doing the online achievements on TA. Need 1 more achievement in Episode I racer. I also need 6 more battlepass levels in Apex.
 
Is there some secret technique to get Ark:  Survival Evolved to actually launch a game on Xbox One X?  I'm chasing that yummy ~1500 GS to finish off my 10K and for some reason the game does nothing when I select "Join Ark" or "Host \ Local" (all the other choices work fine).  There isn't much on the internet about this issue that is recent and I've redownloaded the game a few times in case that's the problem, but nope.

I just finished Full Throttle within an hour or so and Day of the Tentacle and Little Acre are next. They seem to both be as short (with guides). I'll try that Donut County since everyone seems to agree it's short and sweet.

I don't have it installed anymore but if I remember correctly you have to create a character and Host. This was with the base game though. It def was weird to launch. Check the trueachievements guide, that's what I used.

I agree with the general consensus on both Donut County and Little Acres, but beware about Little Acres and the achievement for completing the game in an hour. That doesn't leave much room for dawdling or missing the cues. I had to complete two playthroughs to get that achievement (and a few others I spaced out on).

I was following the TA walkthrough for Ark and the first thing it actually has you do in game is this:

Literally nothing happens when I press A on this (same for "Join Ark"). Occasionally I would get a pop-up saying something wasn't installed properly (I don't remember exactly what it would say).

EDIT - It looks like when I download the game from the Store it only installs four items, but when I go into the Manage screen there are ELEVEN things to install (including Genesis Part 1, which the internet suggests I need). This is a pretty big game...
