I have gone to the xbox web site (not sure if it is xbox.com or billing.microsoft.com) in the past, jumped through all the hoops to turn off auto renewal. Then out of the blue get this email:

"This mail is confirmation that you have successfully renewed your subscription to Gold – 12 Month. This renewal goes into effect on Monday, August 12, 2011. Here is a description of the service:

This membership auto-renews annually at the then current price (subject to change) until you cancel." :bomb:

I'm wondering if this email is concerning my last 12 month card I entered ages ago kicking in and they automatically again put you on auto renew or did they screw me around some other way?

Can someone tell me again how you turn off auto renew. I looked around the MS sites but couldn't find where I did it previously.

I had the same issue entering in a 12 month card after they launched their new site. You can easily turn off the auto-renew through the account management page on the Web site.

You can't turn off auto renewel anymore on xbox.com since the update a couple of weeks back. It specificially says you have to call customer service now.

OP, any luck in checking out the billing page from the Account Management page on Xbox.com?
You can't turn off auto renewel anymore on xbox.com since the update a couple of weeks back. Yep, I'm sure it's just a coincidence.

So does the way my original post read seem like it was just my 12 month card code I entered (probably 1+ years ago) kicking in. A charge hasn't shown up on my cc yet.
I'm glad I never updated my card information on their site. Sticking with vendor bought cards for now.
Same here. My card on file expired over 3 years ago. :D

That doesn't mean much. If it's the same card number/name & security code, it will more than likely run through.

I received the same e-mail today and yet I had previously called them to cancel any and all auto-renewal services on my account as well as remove my card information. This is stupid that I'm receiving an e-mail, but I can't say I'm terribly surprised considering it's Microsoft. All this because when I signed up for the original Xbox, I had entered my card information. Ugh.

Of course this isn't a charge or anything as I'm still good until 2011 sometime thanks to cheap renewal cards. Still bullshit though.

I just got the same email. I specifically turned off auto-renewal a few weeks ago. I got one email this morning saying a renewal was cancelled, and then this new one saying it had been auto renewed. And there is a service warning on the website saying you probably can't access account management. So I tried to look up what the fuck was going on and I can't access my account either.

I just did the turn off auto-renewal on the website yesterday. Under your account there should be a thing that says Auto Renewal: On which will lead you through a few pages of bullshit (just click next) and on the 3rd or 4th page it'll ask you to confirm. If you hit cancel on any of these pages it won't let you go to it again until you leave the site and come back.

I'm now trying to renew at the 39.99 price before November 1st but keep getting an error every time I attempt it.

My friend got the same two emails and noticed what I missed: they are canceling our $49.99 subscriptions and forcing auto-renewal at $59.99. I still can't check my account online but it looks like they are forcing auto-renewal on all of their current Gold subscribers.

This will not end well. Especially if I have to call someone in India to shut it off. I might just cancel it completely.

I was reissued a new card years ago, new number and all, so no worries here. Plus, my Live sub doesn't run out until mid-2012.

Is there a way to completely erase your credit card off xbox? You guys are kinda making it sound like you can't. I think I do have my card on file when I wanted only one month

I had the exact same thing. I'm betting they're having some sort of billing system issue...

I got two emails today. The first one was an auto renewal cancellation. The second one a few hours later was a congratulations on your auto renewal. WTF?!?
It won't even let me get to the account page on the xbox website. Must be some kind of snafu or something. They better not have canceled my pre-paid card membership that I entered months ago.
This must have something to do with the new $59 price going into effect soon.
It's probably just a glitch in the system. At least it better be. If they expect me to just accept this, they're out of their minds.

Will not ever give them my card info even if they have some great offer. Not worth the headache.

Ziv speaks the truth !

What's weird is that my account is good through Dec 2012 thanks to that Netflix thing a couple of months ago. So I dont know why they emailed me saying my account was canceled.

I got the same email and of course, tried to cancel it via xbox.com (before going to work) and the website is still broken. I guess the only thing left to do is call xbl support but the card on file expires nov 1st so don't know how they set it for auto renewal. I had auto renewal off anyways, weird.

It is a problem. I called Xbox and they said that many people are getting the same fake emails.

You get an email saying it's auto renewing then another saying that it's canceled. They know and they are looking into it. You can call them and check if you're uneasy about it.

Now if your account really did run out then y0ou should have read the terms and conditions. I've been a Live member since Live was created and it's always been this way.

But you've always had the option to turn off auto-renewal. Now, they are making you jump through hoops to shut it off.
I think Microsoft outsourced their billing to the ECA.
Sounds like... although the ECA hasn't been able to track down my new debit card after the one I had on file with them expired, so maybe they actually did cancel my account. (even though I'm still getting the damn newsletters every day)

Let's clarify here...it's a mistake, and the emails are false, but they are actually from Microsoft/Live, but they aren't a fake or a spoof/spam/phishing attempt.

I noticed that my card info from buying points on the Zune website (only way to get 1200) somehow worked its way onto the 360 in the dashboard preview program.

So I went ahead and surfed over to Xbox.com and removed the card from my account due to the living hell that I went through with auto-renewal on the original Xbox.

Long story short...I can no longer buy points with that credit card. Not on the Zune website, not on Xbox.com, and not on the 360 itself. Just spits out an error and tells me to go fuck myself.

That wasn't exactly the way that I wanted to migrate the majority of my digital console purchases over to the PS3 but it would seem that Microsoft has made that decision for me.

I similarly have a DEBIT card on file for purchasing MS points and the last time I tried I got an error. Then I recall that I had shut off the "overdraft protection" for that account.

I realize now I get the error because my $1.98 won't cover the cost of the points. Previously the charge would go thru and put me in overdraft (negative balance) and I would deposit cash on the next business day. :) All is as it should be.

Now to buy points, I need to deposit first before attempting the online/dashboard purchase.

When I called, the tech I spoke to said they were updating XBL and as a result these emails were sent. I also had her verify that I was not going to get charged $50 for a renewal until April when my membership is set to auto renew.

Thanks for the info. I'm glad one of us called. 24 hours later and I still go to my account page. Fortunately I'm good until March 16 of 2012. So I wasn't expecting a problem.

Better keep pumping store bought cards into the account when it runs low. Otherwise they will attempt to charge the card and then suspend the account. Why not just remove the card (if you can manage to release it from their jaws of life)?

So if I top off my account with a 12 month prepaid will that end the auto renew?

I purchased 2 months for $2 on the Mrs. account and I got a prompt saying asking if I wanted to auto renew I said NO. I got my credit card charged $10!!! Things like this make me think I should go to Sony.
