Xbox Live Compensation - Undertow Was Free 1/23-1/27

Wow, I actually like this game. It took me like 8 minutes to actually get the controls. All I knew how to do was move the first few minutes of playing, and I didn't know how to shoot. Fun fun. My favorite is the scuba diver.

Some of you guys don't seem to know a few very important factors:

You move to slow? You need to be spamming the right trigger for speed bursts pretty much always. Also, hold down the X button for a sustained turbo.

Left trigger fires depth charges, use it!

Upgrade your guys as soon as you can with the Y button!
yeah i know those ones, this bomb is like a shockwave where the whole enemy team is obliterated in one shot, thats what i was talking about.
Oh yeah they have those on one atlantis level. They're a bitch.

I actually connected to a co-op game and got through the whole campaign to get that achievement without any problems, but I still couldn't stay connected to a multiplayer match.

I'm assuming you mean the map that has the left/right two points above each other on the map, and the middle is a gazebo thing at the top? If you go underneath the middle point all the way down the bottom, you can send a white ball that floats up to the top, doors will close you down there, and anyone not down in that area will die. You can tell it's going off because of the warning siren in the background, just take the air tubes down into the cave from 2 or 4 and you're good! =)

ok, so I downloaded it and it's better then I thought.

do you have to do a coop run all at once to get that cheesemint or can you do it in stages?
ok, so I downloaded it and it's better then I thought.

I did it all at once, but it records on each level if you've done it co-op so I'm pretty sure you can do it in stages.
Oh, yeah, I wasn't really lumping them together. The "surface similarities" as I said before were what initially attracted me to Undertow when I first saw previews for it. I wish Undertow had a berzerk-oshit missile launch button though. >:D

I guess I'm just sad that people aren't giving this game a chance, especially now that it's free. It's fine if someone doesn't like it, but saying it "sucks" after playing for 5 minutes and/or not even really touching multiplayer is really unfair.
Agreed on all fronts (esp. wishing Undertow had a "win" button). I actually enjoyed this game for a short while. It's nothing revolutionary, but I think it's a pretty solid offering. Most people are probably just missing out on the tactics involved to bring any kind of substantial depth to the multiplayer which is consequently where the real game is at.

Wow, playing this game single-player is just painful. I know multiplayer is going to be fun, but in the meantime being cut off from Live, single player is it for me. It's really a lot like running a relay race with a bunch of overweight drunks against a team of kenyan sprinters, even at normal difficulty.

Yeah, M$ "giving" us this game to make up for the live outages is a lot like what my aunts give me for X-mas. a short back story, Last year I got a tie (with the $0.99 sticker STILL on it). years before I've gotten a plain white T-shirt, a few years ago I got a Miami dolphins shirt (I'm a Patriots fan!)

This year I got a pair of Red Sox Pajama pants. I was like.. wow, a decent gift. I wore them once to sleep, when I woke up in the morning they had ripped almost entirely in half... making them useless. Sort of like undertow, we all thought "free game! sweet" then once we got it and played it.... we all thought.... thanks for the Gift M$... at least I didn't pay for it.

I haven't touched it after the first (seriously) 45 seconds I played until I shut it off. Too bad for me maybe. Oh well I can't justify not playing Mass Effect so I can play Undertow.

It kind of makes you wish you could play two videogames at once, anybody ever do this?
It kind of makes you wish you could play two videogames at once, anybody ever do this?
It's very easy to do with EVE online. Grab a mining barge, find a rock, start mining, and play on your DS for an hour.

Maybe I'm weird, or maybe it's because I've only had a 360 for a week, but I actually really like this game. And I haven't even tried the multiplayer. I played the single player for 2 or 3 hours straight the other night. I don't think it's nearly as bad as some of you are saying. Of course it's not Mass Effect or Orange Box, but it's not supposed to be. IMO, it's pretty damn entertaining for an XBLA title.

I can't play this game.

It's a very slow (less hectic) version of Bangai-O. Which may or may not be bad, but I just cannot see the characters in this one.

He blends in too much with the background, and it's hell on my eyes.

At least Bangai-O had very dark backgrounds. I was able to play that one.

I understand where some people are bitching about not being able to see your character but let me point a few things out:

-Only one out of the 4 classes is really small, the others are successively bigger. Could it be that some of you aren't playing long enough to know you can switch to other larger classes?

-For the smallest class, being hard to see is actually your biggest advantage. It's easy to hide and ambush.

- Generally it's not a big deal because you are pretty much always at the center of your screen.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand I missed out because my 360 hasn't come back yet. Ass.
Call them and complain. More than one report of those that did got codes to download it later. Don't tell them you just heard about it though, tell them you are mad that you couldn't get the free game.
Man, I played this for about 30 seconds and then deleted it off my harddrive.... this games sucks big time
Exactly my thoughts on the first 30 seconds of Halo. Luckily, though, I listened to the reviews and others and gave it more time in multiplayer to discover it was pretty cool.

I thought this might be appropriate for this thread:

Undertow developers making game based on Enders Game.

A new collaboration between renowned author Orson Scott Card and Undertow developer, Chair Entertainment, will see the popular sci-fi novel Ender's Game adapted into a series of video games "across all next-generation consoles, handheld platforms, and PC." The first offering is expected to begin development later this year and will be released in downloadable format.

As the story of Ender's Game revolves around the protagonist's experiences within the "Battle Room" -- home to a lifelike simulation of space combat -- it should come as no surprise to learn that Chair Entertainment's goal is to place players into the very same virtual environment. Turning Ender's fictional game into a "real" one certainly makes sly sense within the context of the book, though we would be slightly concerned if the people on our Xbox Live friends should start turning up dead.

In a recently published interview, N'Gai Croal managed to catch-up with the Mustard brothers, Donald and Geremy, founders of Chair Entertainment. They described the Unreal-engine game with great relish, noting that the "the unique characteristics of the Battle Room will make a very compelling, competitive game play experience." Let's hope it can make up for the bad taste left in our mouths by one of their previous Card collaborations, Advent Rising.

Count me as one of the few who actually like Undertow. I just wish the teammate A.I. wasn't so fucking stupid. It's hard to take a base in single-player because my mates just sit around while I get slaughtered as soon as I roll up to the enemy. Haven't tried MP yet, but I'm looking foward to it.

I added you, I'm playing often, join in.

Can't wait. I have semi-high hopes that everything is implemented right and that this game is actually fun.

Quick sidebar, I think Card's writing is mechanical and boring. Now, if someone put out a Song of Ice and Fire video game...

Could be interesting. I loved Ender's Game when I read it in high school (need to reread it again, along with reading the other 2 for the first time).

Anything that gives more exposure to this book is a good thing.

Dude!

Best.
Avatar.
Ever.

I love the Disney Robin Hood cartoon.

Personally, i'd love to see a full-on game for Ender's Game...but they'd probably ruin it. Same goes with Dragonlance (the first saga).

So I downloaded Undertow for free and played it once, whatever. But now when i try to play it, it just seems to freeze or something. It's like my control isn't working but the xbox button works and I can exit to the dashboard but I can't play the game.

I even tried deleting it and redownloading it but it does the same thing. Any advice?

The exact same thing happened to me. It just kind of worked itself out though. I only played it once though - I don't think you are missing much.

Cheap Ass Gamers, not even happy when something is free.

Wish I could help with why it freezes, I only had that problem when I tried to look at the high score list.
It's a sign.

Why are you complaining? Be grateful that you don't have to play that steaming pile of shit.
Agreed.

Any time spent playing Undertow is time wasted. It would be a better use of time to play the Turok demo.

I like the game okay. Played through the campaign and tried one game on XBL. I don't think I'll be playing it much more but it was okay for a bit.

The campaign story is way goofy. Although I must admit I started skipping all the cut scenes after the first third of the campaign.

But anyway haven't had that problem myself OP.

It's only frozen on me a couple times while it was trying to populate multiplayer matches. But those were hard freezes that required me to reboot the system.

Still don't understand the hate for this game. I find it quite enjoyable. But yes, the cutscenes are very silly.

At first, I really thought this game was a piece of crap.

I played through it and got a hang of what was actually going on and how to play properly.

I played through the first act with someone over XBL and I'll have to admit it is challenging and alot of fun. I think the computer cheats a bit, but other than that, this game was a GREAT choice for a free game.

I would never have played this if I had to pay for it.

So for all of you who think his game is crap, I hope you make that assesment based on:
1. You know how to play properly.
2. You have played through at least one chapter.

Overall, I'd give this a "Carcassonne" two thumbs up, great fun to play for free, but I can't justify spending points on the game when other games like Duke Nukem or Puzzle Quest or that cool new Poker Game are coming out or out already.

So no one has any suggestions on my question huh? Guess I didn't get compensation for the downtime.

Call 1-800-4MYXBOX

They'll walk you through fixing the issue, and if not they'll probably give you the points.

Now there's something I disagree with. This game is far less fun than Carcassonne, and that's from someone with 2500ish kills. Carcassonne I played for about 65 days according to 360voice, and I still find it a lot of fun. This game gets boring and repetitive about day 2.

Agreed...played this game a lot the first 2-3 days, and haven't started it up since. The online disconnects way too much, particularily towards the end of the game, and I have zero interest in the single player mode even though I beat it on coop. Carcassone still rocks though....
