Xbox Live Compensation - Undertow Was Free 1/23-1/27
I wish they would just give us points instead.

I'd be happy with 400 extra points.
... You know, I see where you're coming from, I really do. And this isn't towards you in particular, but towards everyone with comments similar to this one.

Just be happy they're going to give us ANYTHING. They don't have to. At most, if they "had" to give something back, it would be the $.13 a day paid for live for those days the service was not working.

I like to wish for things too, but I don't expect them. They aren't owed to me. I pay for Xbox Live because I want to, and when that service doesn't work sure I'm agitated, but things break or have problems all the time. Be grateful, sheesh.

Sheesh indeed! Some of these people have a point though. Especially giving the free game to just gold members since they are the ones out. (Screw the silver members!!) And if they give a game the person has then they are out the $.13 anyways.

A selection of 3 or 4 games would be great though. Just so they dont give us Carcossone crap.
Can you imagine if the free game is Rez or IKarugka?

I have hopes that it's a free new game.
I hope it is a new game too. If you think about it us getting Joust/Robotron/Frogger/Carcassonne in the past have been just MS throwing us a bone. This time, they screwed up big time over the holidays right when a ton of paying subscribers received new games and had time to play. Hopefully they will realize a 400 point arcade classic that was released a year ago isn't going to cut it. I'm thinking it wont be a brand new game, but it could be something at least newer. Then again they could just screw us and give us something we already have.
See this is the argument that I hate.

Why should we be happy about getting something we already have? And I'm not talking about something we bought and paid for, but something Microsoft already gave as a freebie.

I mean that is like Aunt Patty coming to visit you each year for your birthday and gives you the same bland clearanced out K-Mart shirt that she gave you before. Yes, you can say "just be happy that she brought you something" but at the same time, should you really be happy that she gave you present that SHE ALREADY GAVE YOU BEFORE?

In the end a 400 points is 400 points no matter if it's for a game that has been given out time and time again or used towards a game like Puzzle Quest or even some DLC.

Oh and also to the elitests who think Gold members should get the game instead of all X-Box live members. Like it or not, us poor little silver members were effected by the slowdown as well. Get over it.
Yay! free game =D
It's not really free considering the 2 weeks of Live you've been paying for but receiving no service for.

At least it's something, though I'd preffer to have 2 weeks adde to my subscription.

Agreed....my cable company refunds me for days when my service is down. So, when my box died and I was not able to get it for like 3 days (holiday), they gave me like a $3-$5 credit

I can't agree here - you had issues with something that was free in the first place. You shouldn't expect anything. It's like expecting CNN to compensate you if their website goes down for a few days.

I'm hoping that it's one of the newer XBLA games... or possibly a game that hasn't come out. I just hope it's not one of the 25 XBLA games that I already own!

Honestly, I'm just waiting for Castle Crashers to be released.

Plus one other point, don't be so sure they don't "have" to give you something here. The service has been far slower than expectations for 2 weeks. If Microsoft offered absolutely nothing, they would just be inviting a class action lawsuit, and likely have to give 2-3 options for what to buy.

By giving a free game (and I'm sure you'll click on something that says by cashing in your free game, you promise not to sue for any damages you had). Because of this, I think then it's all said and done, they'll either do one of 2 things

1) Give some points out (though, it'll be funny if they only give about 200 points, so you can't get much). They would probably give 400 though.

2) They'll give out a new game just released

3) They'll give out an older game, and offer points (or a different game) for those that already have it.

Just speculating here, but I'm thinking this isn't exactly charity here, it's more like damage control.

My guess: Hexic 2

It was the free game for some territory when the US had Carcassone and it's a sequel to a game many have already. I'd be ok with it, personally.

I'd wish they would say "here is 800 free points, sorry we F'd up"

I've only been an Xbox live member for a week or so and I've been pretty unhappy with the quality of the service, now I KNEW when all this started it was probably due to the christmas rush, but its been going on for over a week.

I know its not a ton of money, but the fact that we PAY for this service should mean they for see this sort of stuff and put the money back in to making the service good. (I mean, come on, they didn't know they were selling a ton of Xboxes this holiday season?!)

I at least applaud them for trying to make it right, hopefully it will be something decent and not "here ya go, you guys get free copies of Ageis wing!"

Damn now I can't buy any XBLA games till they tell us which one we're getting.

I'm not getting screwed again like I did with Carcasonne (bought it a week before it was announced it was gonna be free :bomb: )
I can't agree here - you had issues with something that was free in the first place. You shouldn't expect anything. It's like expecting CNN to compensate you if their website goes down for a few days.
But you didn't pay for the special CNN Box to view the website either, so the analogy doesn't really work. I'm amazed at how vicious people have gotten on the forums over the idea that silver accounts will be getting a free download too. What the hell do you care if MS gives them the same thing they're giving golds? I'm just happy to get something for my troubles, and if MS wants to give it to someone else, so be it. It's not like us golds would have gotten two games if the silvers didn't get anything.

I think 800 points is a bit steep , besides it raises the bar too high if anything ever screws up again .
"Last time they gave us 800 points , this is bullshit ."

As far as the Silver goes , this effected the Dashboard of the 360 .
So go ahead and let it be for everyone , it's OK with me .

Kevlar, I think Sir Mikael's point was just that its inequitable to give the same remedy to people who have suffered different damages.

Gold members were out a lot more than silver were, and concomitantly, should be compensated to a greater extent than the silver members because they suffered a greater loss.

They won't give away anything new or popular because it'll kill the chance of them making money off of it. They make a lot of money off of XBLA, it's pure profit.

It'll most likely be an older title that has a very low total downloaded already to increase the chances that people will play it/like it/continue to play it/ and get people that miss out on the freebie to buy it based on how many people download it free.

It'll be system wide, just because Gold users couldnt play multi, doesnt mean that Silver users were unaffected. I'm a Gold myself, but nothing was operable when it was down.

Gold members were out a lot more than silver were, and concomitantly, should be compensated to a greater extent than the silver members because they suffered a greater loss.

Apples and oranges. Both sides were out, that's all that matters. Silver members can do everything a Gold can except for the early exclusives and play multi. They're not going to alienate the silver members, who in all liklihood will be Gold someday. Oh well you gold members get it, but you silvers dont. Thats not good marketing. Gold members pay for multiplayer and the service, but online is available to all, it affects anyone who wants to use it negatively when it goes down.

If they did diferentiate, the best thing to do would be to have a lower priced game free for the Silvers, and a choice between that game and a pricier one for the Golds. They wont completely alienate the silvers though.

Man. The gold subscribers thinking the silver people don't deserve anything...

It's like if you went to McDonald's and someone bought a Big Mac combo versus someone who bought just fries, and the person with the combo thinking they are the only ones entitled to ketchup, either because they bought more or because they spent more.

Both people made the trip, both people bought food, both people spent money. That's all you ought to understand.

Exactly. They bought the console. They want these people to buy the Gold acct someday. A good way to alienate a consumer who is undecided or maybe doesnt even have the time to play multi wouldnt be happy getting screwed out of a freebie espc when the downtime affected them and their systems. What about the silver member who buys content?

I personally don't care, as I'm Gold and would have it if they did that, but its terrible from a marketing/business perspective.
I can't agree here - you had issues with something that was free in the first place. You shouldn't expect anything. It's like expecting CNN to compensate you if their website goes down for a few days.
So if I go into McDonalds and order a large value meal and some of the french fries are overcooked, me and a guy who got a medium value meal go up to complain. They give me a new fresh order of fries, but they deny him because "I paid extra for large fries and he only has medium fries."

In the end he gets screwed just because he didn't want to pay the extra money for the additional fries. That same thing applies here, why should I be screwed over just because I didn't pay more money just for extra bells and whistles that Gold accounts have?

A better argument - though still extraordinarily weak - would be to not let anyone who has a free gold trial get a game, since those are probably the people who got one for Christmas (such as myself), and thus are most likely the source of all the outage. Kind of a spanking for doing something you didn't know was wrong or hurting others to begin with.

But even that is really weak.

MS gots da cash, peeps. Might as well take'em to the bank, aye? They could fund XBL gold subs for every person, and Bill Gates might yawn at it.

No it would be like you going to McDonalds, ordering a burger and coke. Someone else going and buying a big mac coke and fries. The fries being overcooked so McDonalds giving both the guy who didnt order fries and the who did a replacement order.

I dont really care either way, but Silver members really shouldnt get anything. You didnt lose out on anything. So youre whole already.

Completely weak argument. Yea, lets blame the newbies who wanted to try out their new machines right away and wanted to see if Live was worth it with the card they were given just for that purpose. That'd be a terrible business maneuver and they'd get even more bad press.

It's MS' fault and no one elses. They were not prepared for the influx on the biggest new user days of the year.

If they are going to differentiate the only way to do it fairly would be to have a level type of deal. Silver gets a lower priced game, pre-picked. Gold gets a choice of that lower priced game and another game that is only available free to Golds.

The McDonald's bit is my bit, you jerks!

To everyone saying we should be grateful: you do realize Microsoft has you by the gonads, right? LIVE is just like any other paid service - you pay so things like this don't happen. And if a paid service goes down for a significant amount of time, you bet you owe your customers something.

Well I don't think people should be "grateful", like MS is doing us a favor.
It's really nice customer service of them to do.. well, whatever they wind up doing. But still, we pay for a service. We buy the games. When we have trouble doing this (and it goes on for a while--and it did), something should be done. Doesn't have to be huge or even alot, just something IMO. I don't see them issuing out 800 points OR 800 point games. I think that's asking for a bit much.

You're one of those people? Get a gold account, biotch.

I'm guessing it's going to be Frogger. I wish it'd be the new Pacman Championship Edition, that game looks awesome but I don't want to spend 800 points on it.

Outage still affected silver members.

They couldn't download stuff. Some of the media sharing stuff wasn't working during outages.

If they are on a 2nd (or 3rd, 4th, however many) box and have Arcade games they wouldn't have been able to play them since you have to be logged on to live to play Arcade games you originally downloaded on a different console.

And no, I'm not a Silver member. :D I'm a gold and pissed that I didn't get to play much CoD4 online when I was off work and had extra free time!

I'm a silver member and damn proud of it too. I don't feel like dropping over $30 a year just to play with some random goon from Arkansas.

I paid $7.99 just to try it out for a month and I felt like I paid $7 too much. No price is worth going and trying to find half way decent people to play a game of basketball with when I can walk down the street and play with someone I know personally.

Call me crazy but I still give Microsoft my money for X-Box Live stuff, there for I should be compensated as well. I mean I'm sure there are people who have Gold, but never really use it while some of us chose not to pay money for Gold but chose to still give Microsoft money through DLC and arcade games.

Last time I checked I use their servers to do that stuff, hence why I'm effected by the slowdown as well. Now if the slowdown only hindered online gaming, then I could understand it being only Gold members getting a free game. Yet it didn't, it hindered everyone who tried connecting to X-Box Live, Gold or Silver.
Free Geometry Wars for all!
fuck yeah! :D I seriously want that game.If only they could just give you 800 points so I could get a movie or bungie pro

i understand the silver account argument. But, the point is... you don't pay for it. You're complaining about a free service and i really don't understand how xbox live being down hindered anyone with silver service. so, you couldn't sign in...to do what?

as far as whatever game they are going to give, i wish they would just give us 400 points to use (which they won't) because it really sucks for people who already purchased the game. I would mention reimbursement, but yeah right.
i really don't understand how xbox live being down hindered anyone with silver service. so, you couldn't sign in...to do what?
Download demos? Download content for games? I may not have a gold sub, but I still bought a points card to download some rockband content. So I still spent money, and was affected by Live issues, even with a silver sub. And just because the service is free for people with silver accounts means it doesn't matter if it works properly?

Because I'm on my /third/ 360 I need Live access to play Live Arcade games I already own. So I can understand how the disruption could effect people who only have a silver account.

why is it going to take them " coming weeks" to make this happen. Apologies shouldn't take several weeks.
why is it going to take them " coming weeks" to make this happen. Apologies shouldn't take several weeks.
They've already apologized...

That's definitely his point, and I understand it completely, but I don't agree with it. A 400 point game, from a monetary damages standpoint, is more than enough to make up for 2 weeks of shoddy Live services. So us gold subscribers are already getting damages+. Now to say that silver subscribers should get an arbitrary amount less doesn't make much sense when it doesn't affect the gold subscribers' damages in the least.

Basically, let's say MS says "you know what; you're right. Silver gets nothing." What will Gold members have gained? Nothing; they'll still have their game but will now look like dicks.

I don't know if it's been said, but if "every" Live member is getting a free game, how does that affect those of us with multiple accounts on our systems? If it's free choice, what stops someone from downloading a dozen different games for free using each of their accounts.

I'm not expecting anything big out of Microsoft. Hell, I've been on vacation for a week and a half, and haven't even been on Live at all.

My bet is it will be a new game selected by MS. They have to realize if they pick an existing game everyone that already owns it will be cheesed off and if they let people choose it will be abused.
