Xbox Live Compensation - Undertow Was Free 1/23-1/27
Man. The gold subscribers thinking the silver people don't deserve anything...

It's like if you went to McDonald's and someone bought a Big Mac combo versus someone who bought just fries, and the person with the combo thinking they are the only ones entitled to ketchup, either because they bought more or because they spent more.

Both people made the trip, both people bought food, both people spent money. That's all you ought to understand.
No, it'd be like if you both go to Mcdonalds. But I signed up for a limited edition MCdonalds club card where I pay every month for it and that lets me get free special ketchup. Well one week they ran out of that special ketchup, so then they apologise by giving you some extra special ketchup and everyone else special ketchup to, although everyone else wasnt really affected in the first place...

And then having those random not Special Members complain, "Hey I deserve the special ketchup as much as the Special Club Members! Because I come here to!"

Facets from BOTH services were severely affected which is why BOTH account types are getting a freebie. Don't hate on the silver account holders for getting a freebie they deserve. We are the stupid ones for paying for a service that should be free to everyone. Period.

Wrong, my regular ketchup was affected. I'm not saying us silver members should get anything, I'm just sick of everyone saying "who cares about the silver members, they weren't affected" when that's total bullshit.

Agreed. I can't connect to download Xbla, demos, patch, ect....

Of course legally MS has issues with services paid for, but not priovided. Their bigger problem is a marketing one. MS is purely in damage control at the moment. They are not trying to be nice to customers, they are trying to smooth things over before this issue picks up steam. One could not pick a worse time for live to go down - virtually everyone is gaming more heavily during the holiday break. One of the 360's major selling points is LIVE and how much better it is then the Wii's or PS3's on-line offering. LIVE's reputation as the best choice for on line gaming is what M$ is trying to protect. Nothing more, and nothing less.
Alright, sweet. When is this going to be active?
I'm guessing it'll take about a month to set up, then we gotta sign up for it, then another 4 months till we get the email that includes the code

my point is that silver members shouldn't feel entitled to anything free. Especially, considering you can create endless silver memberships. It would be nice for ms to do this and i would applaud them for it, but you can't expect compensation for a service going down that you haven't paid for... it just doesn't make sense. What monetary value is there in missing a week of something you haven't paid for? I see the I already paid for the points argument, but how do you compensate someone for that? it's not like your points will have disappeared and they aren't paying you interest on them.
The best argument is for anyone who has to sign in to be able to play previous purchased items (which is bullshit anyhow).
Call me a pessimist if you will, but I bet it's going to be a shitty game.
You're a pessimist .

It will probably be an XNA 1st party game .

We've all been to Taco Bell when they ran out of taco sauce , but how many of us go there just for the sauce ?

Yeah, really the only super valid silver argument for needing compensation is from those on a 2nd (or more) console who have to be signed into live to play XBL Arcade games.

That's something MS needs to do away with anyway. At the least they could have a way for people to call in and get those license transfered to the new console. Better yet, just don't have such stupid DRM and just tie it to the gamertag and not require it to be logged in for it to work.

DRM and the onslaught of digital media makes me weep for the future.

I think you're taking the analogy too far. Live, whether it be silver or gold, is a selling point for the console. Everyone plunked down $250-$450 and were told a service would be provided WITH the product, albeit slightly gimped version of the service with a silver account. So is it wrong for people to be upset that a service that was supposed to be available with the purchase of a product wasn't available? Everyone payed for the service, just some more than others.

Didn't you know? Microsoft is the only company in the world that wants your money.

Maybe , I've been a paying member since the the beginning .
Xbox Live has increased in value but not in price .

I have little to no sympathy for Silver lifers .

I'm a CAG but I'm not that cheap .

This is not directed at you , it's just how I feel in general .

Well some people don't have friends that are gamers, would prefer not to play with random 12 year old assholes, or just prefer single player games in general, but still would like to download patches or demos. Should I have to pay 4$ a month for patch updates?

No, but you DO have to wait a week. Not that big of a deal.

I like Xbox Live, and--though I have a gold membership--I've been busy for the past three weeks and haven't signed onto XBL in that time. I don't really feel like I can complain, considering I'd just want to log onto XBL to try out COD4 right now and it's effectively day 1 of outage or me, but I do feel that Silver users don't have too much of a right to bitch, and even less of a right to compensation.

People who paid for the service have their money ticking away during the entire time it's down. Silver users simply have to wait--even if you purchased points, MS isn't taking them away at several points per day; which is what's happening to those who paid for gold.

Sweet this will be my seventh free game.

Free XBLA Games:

1. Aegis Wing
2. Carcassonne
3. Contra
4. Joust
5. Robotron: 2084
6. Yaris
7. ???

I can't believe people are wanting/expecting/hoping for a 1200 point game. The value of that is almost 4 months of LIVE.
i understand the silver account argument. But, the point is... you don't pay for it. You're complaining about a free service and i really don't understand how xbox live being down hindered anyone with silver service. so, you couldn't sign in...to do what?
I paid for the system.

I pay for the DLC and XBLA games.

I pay for the games that I play which indirectly supports them.

So there for, yes, I am entitled to a free game as well.

Hell I've probably spent more money on points cards than it costs to buy a freakin Gold subscription that some people may not even use enough to warrant it.

So anyone who tells me that I should not be held in the same regard is a damned fool.

You're the fool. Silver subscribers should be entitled to the free game, but not for the reasons you've listed.

The main, and really only reason Silver subscribers should be conpensated is the inability to play those rented games if they are on a different console.

Right now, Live works for me (*knocks on wood*), but it was down sometime in October or November. I was on my refurb console that I had just gotten back from McAllen. I could not play my vast amount of XBL titles. That sucked, but it was resolved in a day or so.

In December, Live went down again. This time, I was on my third console, one I had transfered my saves and profile to a memory card, then to the new machine. I tried to play Tiger Woods 07 with my saved profile/game. I could not, at all. This was a game that I had outright bought and had a physical copy, not something I rented. I'm not sure if anyone else has experienced this, but it for sure happened. I even double checked my save game state in the dashboard.

If XBL didn't have the absurd DRM that it does, and you didn't have to be connected to Live to use these games/saves, then I'd argue that Silver members have no leg to stand on.

That's great but what about if we already own the title. I would rather have them release REZ, Ikaruga or any up coming Xbox live arcade game for free.
That's great but what about if we already own the title. I would rather have them release REZ, Ikaruga or any up coming Xbox live arcade game for free.
I'm sure they'll have thought of this. There will probably be a list of titles you can choose from. And if someone owns all of them maybe they'll just give them the points.

Or they may just give us all points or something. Wait and see.

They aren't just going to give out a game and piss off everyone who already has it. Afterall, this is a move of pacify already pissed off gamers.

Any gold member that complains that a silver member is also getting a free game...is a fucking asshole.

Your getting something for FREE, and your immediate reaction is to be upset that others have gotten that same thing for free as well? WTF???

Whatever game your getting is probably playable online. Wouldnt you want... more people suddenly playing it?
We should get nothing.

Edit Shrek and roll will be our cursed game
Actually, that would be fine with me as the kids would probably like it and I wouldn't buy it otherwise ;).

But it is funny, I first heard about this on the crawl on CNN Headline News. I had no idea they were going to offer a free game. This has got to be the first time I heard of a game "deal" on TV before I saw it here . I just haven't been playing on XBL recently so it wasn't an issue with me and I didn't see this thread before.

Of course I came here hoping to find the details only to find out it is still to be determined. I was pretty pissed with the Carcasonne thing because I had just bought that not too long before it was available for free. As a result I have pretty much stopped any and all XBL purchases. I figure they will be discounted or free again at some point so I'm not gonna get burned again ;).

However, to those wondering if they should buy Puzzle Quest I heartily recommend it. I had no idea it was such a LONG game but I've been getting hours and hours of play out of that one - probably more than all my other XBLA games combined. And I'd be pretty sure they wouldn't allow that one for the freebie (though I could definitely see it being decreased in price to 800 points sooner or later which I wouldn't mind having got so much play out of it already).

When I've actually played my 360 lately, I've just played offline games anyway (and had no intention of going online) -- so, I'm basically getting a free game for no reason. Cool with me.

But...I have over 20 XBLA games, so I have a feeling they'll just give out a game I already have. :( I think 400 MS Points would be a better option.

Also, I think it's foolish to expect Rez, Ikaruga, etc for free.

Nah, this isnt a commercial promotion like Robotron/Joust was (neither of those codes even worked for me lol)

In all liklihood they will choose a game and make it free for a few days system wide. Just like they do with holiday things and stuff like that.

It's going to be a lower tiered game though, they stand to lose even more money if they choose something pricey/popular.

I'm a betting man, so I'm going to put my money on Hexic 2.

Two reasons.

1. It bombed sales wise. So not too many people already have it.
2. It's a first-party title from Microsoft.

Bet on it.
please no, what a sucky ass sequel. You can't even tell the gems apart.
What do you mean? There's options in Hexic 2 to change the style of all the pieces to make them distinguishable from one another.

I don't really care what it is. Microsoft doesn't really have to give us anything. I mean, really, how many people are going to completely stop playing online with a system they paid good money for just to show Microsoft a thing or two?

The concern is not those who are already on board, it's the non-subscribing public's perception of LIVE. A lot of people just activated free trials after purchasing their consoles and are experiencing terrible outages - Microsoft needs to keep them happy to make sure they pony up the cash for the real deal.
My major concern is that ALL members are going to be compensated...meaning Gold members are still getting the shaft.
It's not like Silver is getting anything extra, so you have no right to complain.
