Kotaku

Wow, Kotaku is on a sensationalist Microsoft story kick today - first a Wal-Mart store marking down the HD-DVD add-on means HD-DVD is dead, and now this.

While I can't fathom how someone would be so stupid as to actually believe that MS is in a position where "the hackers are in control and there's nothing we can do," (no matter what a 'tard CSR might say) this could still be a wake-up call to MS as well as customers.

My guess? People got their MS Passport login phished. I guess the "Bungie's site was hacked" idea is plausible too. We'll see. Check your credit card activity if you're nervous.

its not a big deal to consumers, unless the actual credit card info was stolen (highly doubtful!).

ms will have a record of all transactions on your account and can reverse them at will. all the stuff bought with MS points is all DRM'ed up remember. its a closed system, then even if you CC info was stolen somehow, your CC probably has fraud protection on it anyhow.

Its highly highly doubtabtful that any consumers will have to pay for this, unless ofcourse they got phished and gave up their passwords but even then, its plplausibale t fraud protection will cover their stupidity.

so yeah ... weather it happened or not, I wouldnt be too concerned.

I think this was probably an isolated incident, I've only seem one post where someone is claiming that their account was hacked.

Still, this is the exact reason I don't use my CC to buy Live subscriptions or points. You get a much better deal at retail anyway.

Nice Title BTW KaneRobot, watcha gonna do when the hacker-maniacs run wild over you ???

i think the CSR at xbox are to blame

the "hackers" call up with the gamertag and get them to reset it over the phone giving them control over the account which they can use to buy stuff

Agreed there - doesn't MS not allow you to take your credit card off once it's on there? Screw that. I have a card on there right now, but I believe it's my old expired one so no big deal. Like you said, the deals that pop-up at stores/on sites once in a while make buying points through the dashboard something only for the very desperate.

I just wanted to lighten it up a little bit, these sites have people fucking flipping out over this, when it's likely something that won't wind up being even close to a major disaster. I suppose if it's all true and Skynet takes over XBox Live and sends Terminators through our TVs to kill us, I'll change the title to something more serious.

What about the children? Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children?!?!?!

Screw the children. One of them called me a "gay nigger" on XBox Live.

I think the lesson here is that Xbox customer service sucks ass and MS needs to do something about it. I don't want to take 30 minutes explaining to a stupid tier 1 rep that my headset needs to be replaced because it acts like crap.

And as for Kotaku and Joystiq, probably got their checks from nintendo today ;).
But no really, it's all senationalism, it's all about getting the most advertising clicks, and fanboys love sensation.

What do you mean "one of them". They all talk like idiots on Live. I am glad I do not use a mic when I play Resistance on PS3.

This caused me to change my "Passport" password for my log-in email of [email protected] from "verboseelitistprick" to "VeRbOsEeLiTiStPrIcK360". That'll learn 'em!!

EDIT: vScrew the children. One of them called me a "gay nigger " on XBox Live.

Yeah, defiant, hacking assholes versus the cream of the 'Live' community. I'm...I'm having a hard time finding a side to sympathize with here.

EDIT II: The Editing: Why is it that I sense that this may be something manufactured out of either sheer impishness or some Sony fanfuck wanting to make Microsoft look bad? The more I read, the less legit/more exaggerated this seems.

from Nelson:

"Despite some recent reports and speculation, I want to reassure all of our 6 million Xbox Live members that we have looked into the situation and found no evidence of any compromise of the security of the Xbox Live Network or Bungie.net. There have been a few isolated incidents where malicious users have been attempting to draw personal information from unsuspecting users and use it to gain access to their LIVE account. This is a good time to remind our members that they should never give out any of their personal information. Additionally it may be a good idea to download this free PDF file from Microsoft.com ' Help Protect Yourself Against Identity Theft’ that gives you some excellent information and tips on how to protect yourself."

Anyone want to photoshop Major Nelson over that Iraqi minister guy who kept saying that Iraq was ok and there's nothing to worry about when the US was taking it over?

AW fuck! I just gave out my SS to XxxcloudxsephirothyaoixxX

I think Microsoft required my CC info back on the original Xbox (why the fuck they needed that, I know not), but I canceled that old subscription a while back.

I don't think I've given them my credit card since then. Just used the card codes.

Well I have to use my CC to buy on the dashboard because best buy or any other store is 45 minutes away for me and thats too far to grab some points. It sounds like someone got nailed because they were stupid.
