Xbox One - General Discussion Thread

If we see gameplay of Halo 5 and Uncharted 4 then I'll be happy with E3.  But honestly, hard to care much about it these days since it turns into more of a media frenzy than anything else.

I guess we now know why they didn't wait for E3 to announce the Kinectless sku.[/quote]Why? You really think that's the reason? It may play a part but what difference does it make as far as sales go? The new SKU is available June 9th so it isn't like announcing early will pad their May numbers. If anything it will hurt them because informed gamers will wait until June rather than pick one up now for, say, Watchdogs.

Then why do you think they announced it early? Prob to build hype.

They knew their April numbers were really bad and with nothing really coming out in May they prob felt like it wasnt going to get any better so who cares if they lose some sales at that point. Might as well announce early and start to build some hype up for June and on ward.

How does that really build hype? Hey, here's a cheaper SKU, but you have to wait three weeks to get it... I think more hype would come from them announcing it at a huge trade event where you also have more attention from main stream media....

I dunno, only reason i could think of announcing it early. If not they i guess they are just really stupid?

But this is exactly what they did isn't it? So why did they do it? I suspect it was done 2 days prior to these horrific NPD numbers so that the talk isn't doom and gloom over the Xbox One, but rather these numbers are poor, but next month they have the cheaper bundle so let's see what happens with it. I mean what other logical explanation do you have for the timing of the announcement?

Hype, Damage control, same thing.

I dont think the X1 is in serious trouble, but in the long run this is just good of all of us because it seems they have learned

1) they just cant shove something at us and expect us to just buy it

and

2) They are quick to realize they fucked up and are actually listening to what people want and are trying to fix it now instead of just staying the course.

Do you really think there is a lot of hype for the 399 sku though? I mean it isn't even in the Amazon top 100 or the movers and shakers list. The hype lasted like 24 hours. Just seems so odd to announce this week rather than their E3 conference where they could have said "Xbox One without Kinect for $399.available in stores... today!!!" That has more punch than what they announced Tuesday don't you think? And the fact the sku is available the day of their conference is pretty telling that announcing it at E3 was what was supposed to happen.

Honestly, I have no idea why they didn't wait for E3. I think they should have. Just trying to say why they might have released it early.
Well if Phil Spencer is telling the truth and they want their E3 show to be "All about the games" they would probably want to get announcements like this out of the way early instead of wasting time for them during the show. Not to mention it's not like this is something huge that people will be cheering for anyway.

Maybe, but could have also just saved it for the end as a quick "oh yeah, btw, we listened, starting today, you can get Xbox 1 without kinect for $399.99"

But at that point it would sound like they'd be shoving it in their just for the sake of announcing it at E3 when there's no reason it couldn't be announced ahead of it.

Like I said I believe this was prematurely just to try and insure they get people who will wait until June and pick this up, but I don't believe it's big enough news to save until E3.

Honestly it would probably have been bad to announce at E3 as people probably would have cheered since it's a hardcore gamer crowd and that group largely hates Kinect and motion control stuff in general. Not good to get cheers for dropping something you touted as a central part of the experience.

Good point, but then why not announce it in those little pressers they do before the show, rather than do it now and kill nearly a month of sales in the process? Just seems way odd unless they plan to do a fire sale in the next couple weeks on the 1 million kinect bundles sitting in the retail pipeline.

Well I figure it was probably to get some press out other than having a bad month in sales (worse than any 360 April as noted above. They know May will suck too since the only really big game is Watchdogs (Wolfenstein isn't going to move next gen consoles) and Sony has the exclusive marketing (just saw an ad during the NBA game that only listed it on PS4)and some exclusive content for that. So nothing lost there really.

So just a way to get some decent buzz (dropping a feature core gamers have been railing against online, getting price to same as PS4) during a sales slump AND get it out of the way so E3 can focus on games--which is the one thing that can turn sales around for them, at least in North American and the UK where their exclusives are super popular.

My guess is they want to focus on games, hopefully some big announcements. Also, they want to punctuate that by saying "and now starting at $399." if they wanted it on shelves during E3 shipments would have to go out ahead of time. Which means a retailer would have leaked it ahead of time. At least this way they are controlling the message. I'm sure the April numbers have something to do with when they announced it this week, but I don't believe it was the biggest factor. Also they have to design packaging and get this to retailers so it isn't like this is something they just decided to do a few days ago.

microsoft has never said the 500 doller version is going away. it's smartto have two versions. i bet any money kinect will be 150. if someone is buying x1 and wants kinect the 500 bundle will still be worth it.

it will be interesting to see how these numbers change come say summer/winter for ps4. Say what you want but the demand thanks to the shortage of ps4 up until march time frame is still impacting sale numbers at this point.

I'm curious to see how it will play out over the Summer for both systems. Looking at Gamestop I couldn't help but notice they both lack any big releases for Summer, I wonder if they'll announce anything at E3 or if the focus for all the games will be in the Fall.

I imagine Sony will release the The Last of Us remake around the Summer (Hell maybe even in June as a lot of retail sites leaked) so Microsoft is going to need some solid first party exclusives if they want the Xbox One to take off.

sunset and quantum both come out this fall that would be  huge for ms.  With last of us i think it's a must it comes out in summer. releasing a ultra hd remake in fall with tons of new stuff out would be huge mistake.

Don't forget this 399 price might make the cod fanboys jump ship to next gen those are huge numbers for ms. Add in a next gen only batman and a next gen only version of a.c.

im excited to see what they do with assassins creed this year. i think they will be two complete diff games but some how tie in with each other and want you to play both. They kind of did the same thing with assassins creed 3 and assassins creed 3 liberation's for vita.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I 100% agree with Timbo, Last of us is a must for a summer release, also GTAV current gen release is supposed to happen this summer for both systems, plus PS4 has the Destiny beta which will be huge for them.  I wonder if Microsoft will have some surprise summer releases, they need something, maybe the indies will start coming to help with the drought, it's working for Sony.

Why are you bringing up PS4? You bitch when others do it but you just did it.

im sorry that i was giving my opinion on news that came out late today and was being talked about on here. sorry that i was working all day and could not read news until late tonight.
But no one was seriously talking about PS4 the last few posts lol. You brought it up when no one else did.

I don't really care but don't be a hypocrite.

harmonix was not happy about the news of kinect less x1. they are making some disney music high end game and the devs were angry on twitter. Not sure what they are mad about dance central was a reason people got kinect and sold pretty well. i'm interested in trying their new game.

Um ok. I don't understand why you are being so aggressive. Im just saying a mod came in, told us to keep this about the X1 which we had been doing and then you made an off topic comment about if the PS4 sales will keep up. Something simple as that can and will start an off topic debate.

Honestly, we were talking about X1 sales for the month and why they announced the new sku so early. Nothing even about PS4.

I clearly stated "Summer Releases". As of yet Microsoft doesn't have anything planned for the Summer and there isn't much exciting games from Third Party developers coming. Sony is releasing the Last of Us which was a huge game last year and will likely get a second wind on the PS4, Microsoft needs to announce something good that'll be coming out soon. I'd say they've done a great job releasing games so far with PvZ, followed by Titanfall, and then Kinect Sports Rivals following it up along with Digital games but they'll need a good pallet of Summer releases to really capture the market.

It's worth noting the Xbox One is getting the Destiny beta to the PS4 will just get it first. Although I doubt it'll be much longer then a week or two's exclusivity.

If Microsoft drops their stupid parity clause at E3 that'll likely give them the Indie Developer support they'll need back. So hopefully they don't mess around with it.

On one hand I can't blame them since Microsoft very specifically kept saying they would be keeping Kinect so developers would be able to tap into a market from every console, and then on the other hand if I'm not mistaken Dance Central sold pretty well and that attracted an audience to the Kinect so as long as this games isn't garbage it'll do fine.

It's obvious that MS knew they were going to release a Kinectless sku for at least the past few weeks, let retailers know ahead of time, and the reason they did this is so that the retailers could get ready to take preorders.

The sales are going to be even worse in May then they were in April but at least MS can show they have "X" amount preordered and share that information with developers or use that information to make MS funny math and try and convince share holders things are going in the right direction. It is as someone mentioned damage control or at least a distraction from bad April/May console sale numbers.

I mean I've received at least 4 e-mails from different retailers stating the Xbox One is now $399 (with a link to preorder the kinectless version at this price) as well as season banners and links on yahoo referencing such

Well when you're signed up to receive promotional emails from stores I'm not sure what you expected, that is big news.......

I should have mentioned I think announcing it early is a smart move.. but because of how these e-mail blasts were sent out as well as the advertising (free and paid) all over the internet I have to believe it was a gameplan they developed long ago.

Again, smart move.

Phil Spencer said that the ball started rolling in April for this sku, so I don't think it was "long ago." In fact I'm guessing it happened right after the Xbox One with Titanfall and discounts didn't beat the PS4. I also don't believe they announced on Tuesday so they could get 4 weeks of preorders, sacrificing actual sales for preorders doesn't make sense, and if you've watched Amazon, the Kinectless sku got up to about 85 on the top 100 on Tuesday when it was announced, and now it's nowhere to be seen, not even on the movers and shakers list, so it appears that this announce had very little impact especially as far as preorders go.

Microsoft at past E3s have announced new 360 models and said they are in stores today, so I truly believe that was the plan especially since the release date of the sku is June 9th the same day of Microsofts conference.

the xbox one dev that visits reddit just posted this

Regardless of how everything is selling, I still WANT to buy the PS4, really I do.. but there just isn't a killer-game yet. Not for me, anyway. (Infamous is the closest so far, but Infamous 2 is still in my backlog, so no rush.)

Will likely pull the trigger once Deep Down comes out.. which would essentially be like when I bought my PS3, the day Demon's Souls came out.

As it is, the E3 line-up seems to favor the Xbox One at this point. The Order does nothing for me on PS4 - nice visuals and atmosphere, but looks like it plays similar to Killzone, which I couldn't stand.

halo 5 in Fall 2015.

"Many fans noted that I was very deliberate with my phrasing on stage at E3 last year. I spoke about a “journey,” rather than a destination – and that journey definitely begins in 2014 with a giant leap, rather than one small step. We’ll give you much more information about our plans for this year at the Xbox E3 2014 Media Briefing on June 9, and we’re confident that “Halo” fans will be pretty excited about the special plans we have in store."

so... 16+ months?

At least by then the console and experience should be polished. We might also see the first true LE X1 console then too.
