Xbox One - General Discussion Thread

DC wasn't originally a f2p. It went f2p 7-8 months after release. So don't know why you're comparing launch f2p to a failed pay model that converted to f2p later to try and rope in more people.
What does it matter if it didn't start out that way? It's still f2p now and has been for quite awhile and it's been pretty successful with it. It will be f2p on PS4 at launch. The comparison works fine.

Yeah, the only people who pay for TV and don't have one that I know are my parents. My dad watches nothing but sports and maybe flipping over to Palladia if there's a band he likes on. My mom watches a few network shows, but mainly streams things on Netflix. Otherwise, everyone I know with pay TV has DVR, so I'm surprised it's only 46%.

I'm not surprised a lot of people on CAG don't have it, since people on here tend to be broke, and there's a much higher than average number of cord cutters on here since many are hardcore gamers and just don't watch much TV.
I've thought about getting one for years but can't justify it because I can wait a week and just watch stuff free on demand and most TV time is taken by the kids watching shows. I did recently find a $10 discount to my bill that I qualified for so I may spend the extra $5 a month for a DVR. I probably would have already done it if they weren't making me drop the old box off all the way across the county.

Killer Instinct 'Season Two' planned for 2014
by Andrew Yoon, Aug 27, 2013 8:00am PDT

The new Killer Instinct for Xbox One will launch with six characters, with two more characters to follow. The entire roster--aka "the full game"--can be purchased for $20.

Of course, that's only the beginning for Killer Instinct. If all goes according to plan, Microsoft wants to launch a second season of DLC characters for the game in 2014.

Tbe plan would be to launch another set of eight characters for the game's second season. "You can pay $20 again and now you have 16 characters, or you pay $40 again and you'll get the everything version," Microsoft's Ken Lobb told Eurogamer. But you'll still be able to buy characters piecemeal, if that's what you want to do.

Ultimately, Microsoft wants Killer Instinct to be a game that lasts for the entire duration of Xbox One's life--with constant content updates and engine refinements that make it evolve over a generation. "Obviously like everything else, it depends on whether it sells," Lobb said, "but my expectation is yes. That's the goal."
-I think this could be a good thing. All depends on the value of what you get. But theoretically the roster could also get pretty bloated and unbalanced. We'll have to wait and see. Though what does "40 again" mean? That's kind of unclear what you get and what they are referring to ($40 for the whole roster at that point?). Maybe it's just poorly worded.

Yeah, I barely use mine any more honestly. The Daily Show is the only thing that gets taped currently, and we barely watch that anymore since I stay at my girlfriend's place most of the time (she doesn't have cable/sat). Walking Dead when it comes back is the only other thing I have an active season pass for I think.

So I'm not sure if I'll get a DVR when we move in together in December/January. Will depend on what kind of promo they offer I guess, and whether the girlfriend wants one.

I've teetered with cutting the cord myself, but in past attempts I just end up spending more on beer and food at sports bars during college football and basketball season than I do on the cable/sat bill for the whole year. :D

What does it matter if it didn't start out that way? It's still f2p now and has been for quite awhile and it's been pretty successful with it. It will be f2p on PS4 at launch. The comparison works fine.
Well let me break this down, when a company makes a game that is meant to be a one time purchase, they design it to not leave much behind a pay wall.

When a company makes a game as f2p, they start out with the idea of hiding parts of the game behind a pay wall.

So DCUO originally was set up with very little behind a pay wall. Once it went f2p they kept the main game as is. So you basically got a pay game as f2p. If DCUO originally started out as f2p I guarantee you there would not be nearly as much to it that wasn't behind a pay wall or grind wall.

So I still stand that its not a fair comparison.

Edit: this sounded kinda douche-ish. Didn't mean for it to come out like that.

They keep pushing cloud gaming but its never going to work as well as they claim.

Really and you know this how? Such an elitist/fanboy comment.

Cloud stuff is just wait and see how it works.

I'm not a huge fan of the idea as I'd hate it if my games didn't run as well if I had to play off line, or my internet was sucking etc.

Especially now as I spend most of my time at my girlfriend's place, and her AT&T DSL is attrocious and drops in and out a few times an hour.  I can't really game online as I get booted, but I can at least play singleplayer with no issues (and that's 99% of my gaming).

At my place the internet is more stable, but has been issues with slowing down to the 1-2mbps range (for the 8-10 it normally gets) in evenings off and on for several months.  It's a complex with a couple 30 story high rise condo buildings and a mid rise office building all on the same ISP that's covered by condo fees from residents and lease fees from businesses so tons of people on the same servers etc. so this seems to happen periodically as bandwith usage rises and the ISP drags their feet upgrading equipment since people aren't going to cancel since we're forced to pay for it through the condo fees.

Hopefully moot as we'll be moving in together somewhere else in Dec/Jan and will get either AT&T Uverse or Comcast (hate both companies, but those are the only broadband options in the ATL area really other than building specific things like Direcpath at my condo now, or 4g stuff like Clear).

Seriously, you need to tone it down. You are far too quick to react. Put a little thought into these things.

In this particular case, the reason why is obvious. Technology based on networking is always difficult to get off the ground. This has proven true with pretty much every MMO ever released. They always have two or three weeks of poor service while the developer/publisher tries to balance the server load.

Cloud computing is just a buzz-word way of saying dedicated servers. Microsoft is investing in the necessary computing back-end to have a lot of dedicated servers that can carry an exceptional computational load. The theory is that this extra processing power will be constantly available to all XBox One's and will allow a lot of nifty extra features for on-line gaming. To a certain degree this is true, and it could prove to be a major advantage for the XBox One, especially where large-scale on-line multiplayer titles are concerned. (such as TitanFall or Destiny)

The problem comes with internet infrastructure and individual connections. Actual performance is going to be dependent on each individual connection, and will vary depending on the end-user's service. (which Microsoft has no direct control over) Until the on-line infrastructure improves in outlying areas, there will be no way to guarantee uniform performance.

I personally don't see any problem with the server load. There's going to be a natural limit initially based on the number of hardware units available. With decent metrics of the XBox One's install base, Microsoft is well positioned to scale their server load precisely, allowing them to optimize the performance and cost of their cloud hardware. This lets them avoid the pitfalls that normally plague MMO launches in terms of performance.

But generally speaking, it's always best to assume the worst when it comes to network launches. Any software or IT engineer will tell you the same.

MS says that 1.5 Mbs is the min requirement. You guys are making it sound way more intense than it actually is.

So would be fine at my place, but not my girlfriends where the internet is constantly dropping in and out and AT&T can do nothing about (as they think it's the security system interfering with it periodically).

It's not a big deal or anything. I just like for my consoles to be able to work 100% normally with no internet for times when I have outages, or take it to my parents in WV when visiting where they don't have any broad band options currently etc.

I agree. I see the opposite. I was extremely interested when Gaikai was founded and peaked when I saw Perry joining the team. Then they showed its beginning potential when streaming Spore, Mario Kart 64 and a couple other games. And then of course streaming WoW topped it off.

The potential is most definitely there for some game changing elements. The question is if they implement them.

I still contend cloud computing should be out now and will be the future of gaming. Being able to play any and on virtually any computer that can keep up with flash is amazing. Hearing how Gaikai wanted to set up servers for specific games (preloaded zones in cache or RAM etc) to cut down on computing power on server side made it very feasible to start now. Then Sony bought them out and shelved it for years.

Don't get me wrong.  I'm all for that stuff as I'd much rather just pay a fee (if reasonable) and stream games than buy them.  I don't replay or collect, so it's just a hassle buying and reselling everything.  And Gamefly and Redbox are overpriced for the little I game each week (a 10 hour game usually takes me 2-3 weeks to get through) so I'd spend more out of pocket on those rental services than I do after buying and selling a handful of games a year.

I can stream all I want on Netflix for $8.99 plus tax, Spotify for $9.99 plus tax.  Give me a game streaming service in the $10-15 a month range and I'm all for it.

What I don't like as much is cloud gaming where I'm still buying game discs in the $20-60 range per title that won't work as well if my internet is having issues.

Albert getting real... "I think people are using the way [voice] works on Xbox 360, which was an accessory we built five years after release, as how it's going to work here," he told us. "But it's so much more elegant and so much more integrated, and in many ways it's a lot faster and more convenient. Whereas on Xbox 360 it's a lesser version of doing the thing you're used to doing on your controller. "This is the part of the internet that's frustrating, because everybody wants to assume there's a [units volume] issue. And yet I'm showing real hardware here at Gamescom - a real, final, retail kit. Which I have yet to see my friends show me. With the big cut back the other week in how many countries they're launching in, it's pretty clear they aren't going to hit the number of units they had hoped to have ready to go at launch for whatever reason.

Probably not a big deal, but if Sony has a lot more stock at launch/through the holidays AND it sells well it could give the impression of them having much greater demand when the sales numbers come out--when it could just be that X1 demand is equal or greater and MS just couldn't meet it.

Will be interesting to see how things play out this fall/winter.

I'd also think that we'll see both MS and Sony (and third parties) offering some exclusive bonuses for preordering/buying the digital version.

They really need to start incentivizing people to go digital if they want more people to get on board.

But you'll still be able to buy characters piecemeal, if that's what you want to do.

40 again means you pay 40 for the complete season two, with alternate costumes and other bonuses. Just like at launch they will have the 20 for 8 characters or 40 for complete price points. Character balancing wont be an issue as long as KI is relevant in the competitive scene as there are a slew of tournaments year round (if you follow the FGC) and so far there has been plenty of feedback from the community about the characters that have already been revealed.

Regarding "the cloud" and how it will or will not be useful this generation:

Remember back at the start of the last generation?  Remember how many people were thumbing their noses at Xbox Live and questioning if it was a viable enterprise?  Consoles on the internet, who does such a thing? How can this improve gaming?

One company very clearly saw the potential of connecting to a network and connecting with your friends, and designed their system from the ground up around it.

The other company halfassed it, and wound up with a system that simply would not/could not allow for something as seemingly simple as cross-game chat.

Not saying this is a guarantee or anything....but I could see similar results with "the cloud" and this generation.  One company has made it a priority and has taken steps to ensure that developers are on board with the idea of using their cloud service, to the point of offering servers at what are apparently greatly discounted rates.  The other is using it as a way of streaming old games.  You figure out which one has the more revolutionary potential.

That's definitely true.  If the cloud stuff ends up being revolutionary, MS is definitely ahead of the curve on that.  Just like they were online stuff with Xbox Live, and still have PSN and Nintendo scrambling to catch up.

A lot of it is mostly lost on old fuddy duddies like me who just like single player games and are more just wanting more of the same with better graphics than any new experience, control types etc.

But it's the younger and more tech savvy folk that drive the gaming industry, not the older generations.  At 34, gaming is pretty much on it's way out with me.  I'm still debating whether to keep my PS4 preorder, or just stick it out with my PS3 backlog and take more time to decide whether to continue gaming beyond this gen.  I'll likely just keep it as I'm still gaming a decent amount right now, but I really have a hard time seeing myself gaming beyond next gen when I'll be 40ish and gaming will likely be changing a lot with moving to even more online/social gaming stuff, more digital content, more non-traditional controls etc.

I'm not questioning the potential of leaning on networking for new services. However, such an approach is not above questioning. And most importantly, it is not above realistic expectations.

XBox Live did not operate as originally envisioned when it first launched. It was years before anyone was able to properly take advantage of the service. The state of XBox Live on the 360 changed drastically over the course of that platforms cycle. (and continues to change)

The service you will be getting with the XBox One has plenty of potential. But it isn't going to realize that potential at launch. It will be a year or two before developers come to grips with what the cloud network is able to provide. Until then the end users aren't going to be seeing a lot of the benefits of the system Microsoft has put into place. Jumping on the XBox One at launch is going to be more of an investment in future potential, tied to a fluid service.

This is not a bad investment. Microsoft has shown they are willing to constantly commit resources to developing and changing XBox Live. For me the sticking point is the direction they've been driving XBox Live in. I can't help but feel that they've changed their on-line service into a means of advertising rather than a game development platform. Most of what I've seen of the XBox One only reinforces that impression.

Richard I still don't get the ads argument. There are ads everywhere. I have PS+ guess what PSN still has ads. I went to the dentist today...guess what ADS! Everywhere! From the big posters on the wall down to the pen and clipboard I used to sign in. What is the point behind saying on Xbox has ads? Everything has ads.

Just saw this as well. Can't wait to see what Epic has up their sleeves! PAX is going to be awesome!

I really think Ryse is going to surprise a ton if folks this holiday!

Damnit.

Now I'm torn.  Ever since they announced that you could get the Day One bonuses if you download the full game within two weeks of launch day, I've been pondering canceling my preorders and buying the digital copies.

But now they show off those boxes, and.....

This should be easier.  :headache:  #firstworldproblem

Probably. It doesn't say anything about them being steelbooks in the article and you know MS wouldn't leave that detail out.

Yea I'm not getting them for just sleeves. Steelbooks I would have been in.

Anyone see this Destiny demo from Gamescom?

http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/08/22/destiny-behind-closed-doors-at-gamescom-2013

I wasn't sold on this game at all until seeing this gameplay. It looks great from a co-op and full on MMO standpoint. But, what I love is that you can play solo too. That's why I think I'm more into Destiny than Titanfall.
Oh yeah well that was pretty much the same thing they showed at E3 but better presented with no game stutters. The game reminded me of Borderlands 2 and Guild Wars 2 which are two of my favorites so I'm very much looking forward to that game. The music is also just butter too, I'm a big Halo fan and I get goosebumps when I hear Marty's stuff.

Yeah thy are sleeves my mistake. But they do come with nice bonuses.

I was hoping for new video but at least it's a better build and they changed it up a little bit.

I can't wait for it. I might have to buy it on both consoles!

and the bonuses are nice but not enough for me to buy it on day one.

cboat's back and he's got quite the info. Here's a translation:

Back home now. Yay! >_<

Apologies for the late October no show for the PS4. I heard it was that date, but Sony is not my strong suite. It happens. Call 1-800-BUT-OCXS for a refund of your money. ;)

Seriously I am sorry though.

Xbox November 8th hahaha... no.
Saw Kotaku article and then their retraction. That's ok I could have told them November 8 was a pipe dream. I know Microsoft better than SCEA.

* Xbox One contact reps are being called in for November 15th.
* These are contact reps not actually working for MS. Hardly any of them do.
* New CS software implemented for November 15th w/ support for taxonomy for Xbox One.
* Called "Assisted Support Desktop."
* Anti-Phishing stuff in to make it hard for Nigerian Ukranian Russian princes to call about account info that not theirs but if customer doesn't have e-mail or a phone number associated with account, Xbox One reps will have tghe power to tell the call to fuck off.
* I wish I had some talked to some Sony CS reps 3 weeks ago. Oh well!

Do you want to sell your digital games? OH NO I ONLY REPORT BAD NEWS FOR XBONE!

For the following questions please assume that Microsoft Xbox One will offer a digital marketplace where you can purchase and sell digital video games.

New digital marketplace where you can purchase and sell digital video games:
-This will be available through the systems’ premium subscription service (such as Xbox Live Gold/Playstation Plus)
-You will have the ability to purchase and sell pre-owned digital video games.
-You will have the ability to sell back/trade in your versions of digital games you have purchased.
-You will have the ability to buy pre-owned digital versions of games through the online marketplace.
-You will have a variety of prices and features available to purchase for pre-owned digital versions of games.
-All transactions will take place via digital downloads/transfers within your next generation gaming system’s digital store.
-New full game digital downloads will still be available, as will physical (disc) versions sold at retail stores/websites.
-Pre-owned disc versions of games will be able to be played on the next generation gaming system for free.
-There will be a marketplace service fee charged to the seller when they sell a digital version of a game.
Last thing, final word on the matter:
Get mad if you want, call me into question if you like. No sweat off my nose. My job is safe and your tender tear buckets make flowers grow.

9 years on these forums. Been here before. Reddit mad because they're shown up and I'll turn the lights off when they leave.

Why?

Simple.

I don't get paid to post.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=663273

Ok if they have a real digital marketplace where I can sell my digital games, I might be on the Xbox One train a lot sooner. I'm doubtful though, supposedly Steam has been trying to set something up like that for years with no luck.

xbox one out nov 15th lol nooo way that happens at least i hope for the safety of the fanboys of those systems waiting in line with each other. :bouncy:

with all this talk about cloud gaming today i have to say how i feel. We seen how awful on live was and still amazing that service is still up and running seeing how awful that system works i was one of the idiots that paid for that system. With that said i do trust micorosft and their 300 k servers more then most companys when i comes to that kind of service seeing they have been doing network stuff for 30 some years.

I do remember when they started talking about the cloud stuff some people on podcasts who were big tech experts said cloud technology hadn't been proven it could do a lot of the stuff they were saying it could, it was theoretical at best because it hadn't really been tested in that fashion.

Also apparently it's definitely NOT coming out Nov. 8th:

The Xbox One Will Not Launch On November 8 After All
ku-bigpic.jpg

Yesterday, we heard from a source at a marketing company who had seen documentation pencilling the Xbox One in for a tentative, unconfirmed November 8 launch. Today, a source close to Microsoft tells us that's not the case.

The source says to expect the console at a date later than November 8, though obviously still in the month of November, as that's the release window Microsoft has promised for some time.

So hey, we're back to not having a release date, but at least armchair fortune-tellers can now rule out November 8 (or earlier!).

Best part about it not being Nov 8th is that I get paid three time in November. Instead of going 100% to savings, a portion will be paying for my X1 and games :D

Hopefully we get a date at PAX.
