Xbox One - General Discussion Thread

The big update is being rolled out:

Here’s a breakdown of more of the features in the March update, addressing some of the biggest feedback you’ve shared:

  • Get to your friends list faster. The friends list is now front and center on the homepage of the Friends app. Click the Social tile on Home, or say “Xbox, go to Friends” to see who’s online and what they’re up to. From there you can quickly send messages and get into a party.
  • Party chat on by default. When you party up, chat audio is turned on by default.
  • Chat with friends playing different games. Party chat is now separated from people playing your game, so you can chat with your friends who are online or you can chat with everyone playing the game.
  • “Invite friends to game” option available in your multiplayer titles. Similar to Xbox 360 titles, when you’re inside a game's menu you have a simpler and quicker way to set up your multiplayer battles. Selecting “Invite friends” lets you invite friends to your game and party.
  • See a list of “Recent Players.” This is a simple list that shows you Xbox Live members you’ve recently played with, making it easier to stay in touch with people, add new friends after your multiplayer sessions, or report a player for bad behavior.
  • Twitch live streaming support. The best broadcasting and spectating experience on any game console is on its way to Xbox One with the new Twitch app launching on March 11, just say “Xbox broadcast” to start sharing. Xbox One is the only next-gen console that allows you to archive your Twitch broadcasts and view live Twitch streams regardless of their original source.
  • Dolby Digital sound. Optical out now supports 5.1 Dolby Digital, enabling devices such as sound bars and headsets with only optical in to be able to receive 5.1 Dolby Digital from Xbox One over optical. We’re also adding support for Dolby Digital surround sound over HDMI. Now you’ll be able to have the best sound quality no matter what speaker setup you are using.
  • We will now support 50Hz output to Xbox One. You can set the live TV app to display at 50Hz for full or fill modes, fixing the frame rate issues some users in Europe have been experiencing while watching live TV on Xbox One.

There are some other really great updates coming in March that may be less obvious, but still important to you. Here are some of my other favorites:

  • Volume up/down adjustments. We’re making it easier to adjust the volume on your Xbox One. Now, you can tailor the number of volume increments when using “Xbox volume up” or “Xbox volume down” voice commands.
  • New ways to stay connected with SmartGlass. We’re introducing new ways for you to stay connected with your friends through Xbox One SmartGlass. Receive notifications of Xbox Live messages, check out what your friends are doing, and see their latest highlight clips. You can even unsnap apps with the tap of a finger – all from your personal device.
  • Support for new Xbox One accessories. Xbox One now supports the recently announced Xbox One Stereo Headset and Adapter, the Xbox One Media Remote with a dedicated OneGuide button, as well as third party headsets.
  • Browser improvements. When you’re searching for content, there’s now a direct link to IE to see related results on the web. New gesture and controller features let you directly zoom and pan Bing and Google maps. And search is even faster in IE – just highlight a phrase on a web page and press the menu button to search Bing and learn more.
  • IR blasting of power and volume to TVs/AVRs is now available in all regions.
  • Easy sound bar setup. Your audio sound bar set up just got a lot easier. You no longer need to type in the model number for most sound bars or AVRs when setting up TV on Xbox One.
  • General improvements. Last, but not least, a few miscellaneous updates like the ability to view Game Clips while in Snap mode and a new passkey feature to protect user settings.

Can anyone recommend a good but preferably not overly expensive headset? Was thinking I might just go with the Turtle Beach XO Four, just because I figured I may as well get a good quality headset early on instead of waiting for no good reason. But I've never used Turtle Beach before and am not sure how great their quality tends to be, also not sure if I may be able to find a cheaper headset for the 360 and just get the wireless adapter.

I believe the MS Headset is the cheapest of the XBOX ONE dedicated headsets. I'm looking to replace my old X11 from Turtle Beach. Although, the MS headset has no reviews yet, so who knows the quality.

I have the MS set on order at Best Buy since I had a RZ coupon and got 15% off with the buy a game, get accessory on sale. One thing I cannot find anywhere is if the cable from the headphones is removable and HOW LONG it is. I use headphones to watch TV, and if this cannot reach my receiver, I may return.

Anyone use a splitter for HDMI. my wife hates the XBOX ONE interface, so I currently have the HDMI cable from my cable box going directly to my receiver. However, I was thinking of getting a splitter that would run one cable to my RECEIVER and another to my XBOX for the HDMI coming out of my cable box. Thus, it would give both options. Just cuious if that would work, degrade picture?
I use a splitter. I got it because my wife, kids and I all have very different schedules, so the TV tends to be on morning, noon, and night. I didn't want my new XBOX One to be on for 12+ hours a day. My wife was also not crazy about having to use the console just to watch TV. So now I have my DirecTV signal coming into the receiver and straight into the TV, and other cables also going from receiver to XB1 to the TV. Most of the time, if someone just wants to watch TV, the XB1 isn't even on, but if I want to jump between games and TV or whatever, I have that option. I haven't noticed any degradation of the picture quality. I got a decent HDMI splitter and a few HDMI cables on Monoprice for under $30.

The Turtle Beach X12's are always highly recommended by people in reviews. $49 on Amazon + the $25 adapter

Budget is about $100, was looking into the Xbox One headsets because I read for the 360 ones you may need to plug them into your TV for audio and I don't want wires running everywhere.

The Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Four's are a simple solution, wireless and fully compatible with the One for chat, etc., right out of the box (once you've done the One update). At $99, it's only $20 over the official One headset, which is an equally simple setup, but is wired instead of wireless. They're both stereo, so no surround sound. Build quality on Turtle Beach headsets.. is a bit flimsy ever since their X41s. No word yet on the official cans. Sound quality on the TB's I would mark as "average". Again, can't speak to the official set.

If you can expand your budget just a bit, you'll be able to find the Astro A30s, wired, with surround sound, better sound and a higher-end build quality, for $109 used. It has a MixAmp. If you want new, it'll run $149. But you should be able to find a deal if you look. You could also find the A40s for $149 if you shop, and those are wireless.

(Potentially, you could get the A30s used - and just utilize the older version of the Astro MixAmp.)

If you can expand even more, to $199, Astro is selling refurbs of the A50s on eBay - usually $299. A solid deal on one of the best headsets out there.

These last two sets would require the headset adapter, so that's another $25 for chat.

Moving in another direction would be the Astro MixAmp, a wired solution that is $129 new for the 2013 version (but can be bought used), can process Dolby 5.1, you can use any type of wired headphones with it and use it as a portable amp for your phone and/or computer. This gives you 100% choice of headphones, which can also be used with any audio source. Would also require the headset adapter at $25.

So... a few options.

There are a couple Turtle Beach wired surround options, one at $99 (DXL1) and (DX12) at $129, but not sure how chat works with either of them - may be Kinect only options.

Aside from budget, you have to determine stereo vs. surround, wired vs. wireless. Wired and stereo is cheapest and will easily fit your $100 budget. But if you can double your budget or at least beef it up by 50%, you'll probably be happier, and have better sound and build quality, especially if you're also going to use them for TV and movies.

Personally I prefer the bring-whatever-headphones-you-want MixAmp. It's a bit more expensive, but adds the versatility of using whatever headphones you want, even higher-end PC cans.

Friend got update but I didn't. Can't connect to party because my system hasn't gotten the update (even with standby and multiple resets, hopefully I get lucky when I go back downstairs and it updates).

Thanks Obama.

The Microsoft Headset for $80 is Wireless also. The only wire is running from the headphones to the controller (and that is the same for ALL headphones for XBOX). The PS3/PS4 headphones are wireless (with a dongle). MS should be able to do that.....but when will they?

Also, the Stereo vs Surround will be debated as the surround option only comes from an external processor, since as the mixamp or the Turtle Beach DSS. All headphones are essentially STEREO since they have 2 speakers in the cans.

Microsoft stated that they should be able to update the adapter to support surround processing, basically saying it would only require a software upgrade. They need to hold something back for the next "huge" update that is really only minor ;)

That is by definition not wireless. More convenient than running the wire from the console though.

watch dogs out may 27th what a awful date. Most peoplewill be traveling home from the long memoral day weekend :/ guess i will not play it till at leat that thurs.

Thanks for the correction on that, DD. Dunno why I thought the MS headset was also wired to the XB1.

And yup, every headset will be wired if you want chat, so just a Q of whether one cares about wires coming out of their XB1 or not. Wired usually offers better, more consistent sound - sorta like gigabit ethernet vs. wireless - and wired will incidentally be cheaper unless you go for more advanced offerings, like a MixAmp. I believe Turtle Beach has gotten into that game as well, though I don't yet believe they sell theirs separate from headphone offerings.

That being the case, if you don't care about surround RIGHT NOW, may as well just get the MS offering at $79.99.. or wait a couple days and see what the reviews say.

Has anyone found a game cheaper than $5 that can be used with the BestBuy accessory sale this week? Looks like clearance and used games don't work with the promotion, sadly. I'm probably going to pick up the new Microsoft headset regardless.

Here's one

It's clearance but it should be working with the promotion. I have it in my cart and it's taking the price off a headset.

I'm gonna hold onto Forza 5 and play it sporadically over the next two years. I maybe play it once a week but it's not a series I'll buy that next edition.

I'm finishing up Lego Marvel 100% this weekend and trading it for Titanfall. Lego Marvel has been the most fun X1 game to this point but after you clear it all there's literally nothing to do.

yeah i got couple x1 games like marvel/bf4/madden i have to trade in for any games coming out this year. So i will get new games pretty cheap for awhile if gs values stay decent high.

Thanks man! Used it to get the Microsoft headset on one order, and then placed a second order with the Titanfall controller which came out to $63 after tax. The discount didn't want to apply on my second order, so I had to call and place it over the phone. Saved $16 total across both orders. :)

Will be reviewing both the headset and controller early next week.

I don't know what it is, but I love the Titanfall controller. The design is appealing and the slightly-rubbery finish is comfortable. One of my favorite LE controllers ever, and I have a thing for LE controllers.

Sounds like external hard drive support will be coming soon, Marc Whitten mentioned it saying soon from the article I read online, so it's reassuring they haven't forgotten about it.

Haha...that is what I did. I ordered DJ Hero. I did an in-store pickup for it, but I just won't pick it up. True CheapAss style.

Microsoft is going to start giving away digital copy of Froza 5 with purchase of Xbox One next week:

http://www.engadget.com/2014/03/06/xbox-one-forza-5-offer/?ncid=rss_truncated

I wonder if you will still get Froza 5 if you purchase the Titanfall bundle too.
damn no love for US launch customers even Europe got a free game we got nothing for the same price and now people who waited getting Titanfall or Forza 5 for free, the life of an early adopter i guess

twitch streaming looks really sweet can't wait to use it tues. Looks like you can even pick where you want the cam on screen not just in one area and locked.

That Twitch X1 connection is dope. Broadcasting to the world, TV is going down hill already and I'd never get an old gaming G4 show like Arena but I can watch some talent on Twitch any time on demand, if not live.

Picked up my Microsoft headset today.  I have mixed feeling about it.  It's comfortable, so that is a plus.  The build quality seems decent, has a 4' cable that runs into the headset and comes with a USB cable.  My one BIG main concern is the wire that goes from the headset to the chat pad is NOT removable on the headset side and is the same THIN, CHEAP ASS cable that is on the chat headset.  I'm debating to keep or return at this point.

Also, mine had a gouge in the side of them.  Nice quality control Microsoft.  I'm exchanging for sure.

Does anyone know the value of the "Day One" Controller and Achievement? I checked e-bay and cant really get a sense if I should hold one to them or try and dump them.

Dunno about the achievement - could swear they were selling for $30-$35 - but did look up the controller earlier and saw a wildly fluctuating value, between $35 and $80. Perhaps bundling them together with a Buy It Now would net some decent results in the $90 range?

Heard from Ryan McCaffery on Podcast Unlocked that yeah those are overpriced mediocre headphones.

This weekend Major Nelson said he's gonna test out a bunch of 3rd party headsets so look for that prob on Monday.

To add to my review of the Microsoft Headphones.  I believe I will be returning them now.  I tried them out after I returned the other ones since they had a gouge in them, and this pair shocked my ears....literally, zapped me.  My house is dry, but I've never had that happen with my TB or PS3 headphones.  I'm going to try and find an adapter and use my old X11's now.

Now, where can I find this adapter.  I'm pissed at myself for not just getting that to begin with.

You're sure the cord isn't even a little thicker?

I ordered the headset so I could review it... Would really suck if it broke on me within a year!

Best Buy has actually banned people for abusing bundled discount/free items in the past. If I were you, I'd pick up the game at least.
Well, I'm returning the headphones and the game now...no worries. I'm sick of Microsoft. Stupid headphones that shocked me...literally the shock hurt enough I had to throw them off my head. Customer Service was a joke too. I just need to find that stupid adapter. Ugh.

And yes, the cable is super thin on the headset. The only saving grace is the controller side unplugs unlike the chat headset included with the console

Wow now they're giving away Forza 5 with every new Xbox One purchase?  Holy shit they're desperate.  I bet they're going to try to clear out inventory giving away a game that they lose no money on so that they can restock inventory in June/July with $399.99 consoles.  anyone buying this for 499.99 is making a huge mistake.  Then again it is a digital download so maybe it's MS making a mistake.  I'm sure people will buy this, get the free download on their account, change their mind, then return the Xbox One.  Then later when the Xbox One is 399.99 rebuy it since it's a better price and now they've got Forza 5 for free.

lol some people need to not take this so seriously. OMG almost 4 million consoles sold, MS must be abandoning the console lol.
Who said they're abandoning the console? *I* said they're trying to dump inventory so they can get suckers to pay an extra $100 than the console will cost in 3 months.

Ok have fun talking about the xbox with dmaul one while I enjoy my xbox one and not worrying about price drops of a console that you probably don't own or wont own for a couple years.

hahahaha! You don't have to convince *me* that you aren't worried about price drops. Even if that's true (haha) it makes no difference because plenty of people WILL be pissed off and WILL be upset. They should understand that this type of behavior is indicative of an upcoming price drop and has been in every generation before this.
