Xbox One on the way. DRM removed, more details to come.

I see the PS4 as just a newer version of what we already have like the iPhone 6 or new iPad.

The X1 however I see as something completely different and with a completely different direction.

I respect MS for bucking the trend even if I am not totally sold on all of it yet.

But I want more out the next generation than just better graphics than we currently have which IMHO is all that the PS4 is offering.

If that's all the next gen had to offer I would just stick with my PS3 and 360. Last of Us looks awesome on the PS3 why do I need just better graphics and nothing more?

That's why I am going with the X1.

I have 4Mbit Down and it sucks ass. People who have fast Internet seem to think everyone in this country (US) has access to it which is laughable. Microsoft will learn his the hard way this gen, the word will spread when casual Wal-Mart buyers walk in and buy an X1 and then realize when they get home they can't do shit with it. Trust me this is going to happen way more than people estimate.
I actually think the majority of American's aren't underestimating it. I think the folks in Redmond are. They're out of touch with their customers.
I don't understand this logic. IMO this is the equivalent of saying that Crytek should have never made the original Crysis because most people could not play it on their PCs, or that Ferrari should stop making luxury cars. Why should we stifle innovation to appease the masses? If M$ wants to make a console that truly pushes the boundaries of gaming and cloud computing they are entitled to it. If the market cannot support such a console they'll face music but I applaud them for trying to innovate and create something new.
Um that's not the same thing at all actually. Almost anyone in the US can buy the pc parts necessary to play a game like Crysis if they really want to. I can't just pick up my house and move it to a place where I can get faster Internet. To improve your Internet speeds most people would have to actually move which is an entire lifestyle/life change. Those really aren't the same things at all lol.

Oh and Microsoft can't afford to push the boundaries like that because if they do and the public pushes against it and goes over to Sony then Microsoft has lost this generation and by a lot....Microsoft isn't exactly Apple at this point. Between Windows 8 and the X1 Microsoft has very little room for future fuck-ups.
Whoa, do you even know the market value for Microsoft? Very little room for future fuck-ups? I'd say the Sony electronic division needs the success more than Microsoft does.

I see Microsoft's vision already materialized in smart tv's:

http://www.techny.com/2012/02/new-samsung-smart-tvs-you-control-with-your-voice-face-motion/

Mixed with a failed DRM tech like divx:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Or4nWQpidk

So mixing features that will be readily available on most smart tvs in the next couple years with a tech that took down circuit city sounds like a recipe for disaster, but let's see what happens.

Agreed.

Someone obviously dosent pay attention to the market at all.

Sony's net worth: 20.95B as of market close. (http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=SNE )

Microsoft's: 292.29B as of market close. (http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=MSFT&ql=0 )

I'm pretty sure Microsoft's advertising budget is more then Sony's entire company is worth.

If your reacting to everything your competitor is doing, you are bound to fail. This isnt a "me too me too".

I would answer your question by saying: Microsoft learned very well from Apple, which is the reason they are doing exactly what Apple would do.

Apple does not look at the competitors and copy them. People copy Apple. Why? Because they had the guts and fortitude to go through with devices that (at first) the hardcore crowd didnt like.

Have you used the final controller yet of the PS4 one? Didn't think so...
Do you read reviews before you buy a game? Thought so..

The fanboyism is strong in this one, will dismiss 5 reviews because he doesn't want to believe.

No I think the fanboy is strong with you. There is a PS4 thread ya know.

What I was saying is wait til you can hold it yourself. I can post 10 articles from Kotaku, Joystiq and others praising the control and the new rumble functionality but you want kudos for finding one fucking podcast that didn't like it. Congrats /over you win!

Neither you nor I are entitled to an X1 or high speed internet. If you choose to live in a rural area, you don't get the same benefits of living in a major city but at the same time you get to avoid all the headaches and expenses associated with living in a major city. Life is full of tradeoffs, if I want to drive a Ferrari, I'll have to sell my house and put that money towards buying a car.

Glad to see good impressions of the DS4.  Not a big fan of the prior DS controllers--though the DS3 is much better with the pelican real triggers and analog stick silicon caps.

DS4 looks to have better triggers and the concave sticks look nice, so I'm hoping I'll like it better.  I still prefer off set analog sticks to side by side though.

At least you didn't link to a grocery store.

This gen Microsoft has basically gotten to a dead even race with Sony worldwide and has beaten them in the US, if the X1 gets beat by Sony in the US and worldwide this gen then it will be seen by most as a failure.  A failure doesn't mean it sells 5 copies and dies in 2 years, that's an impossibility, but getting beat by Sony after having the "it" console the previous gen?  That is a failure in my book.  We will see how this all plays out but my guess is that the X1 will lose market share to Sony this time around.  If that happens ask Microsoft share holders if the X1 was a failure, that will be your answer.

And just because one individual likes Windows 8 doesn't mean it isn't a piece of shit failure.  Seriously....find me one positive article about Windows 8 customer satisfaction  and/or sales/adoption rate.  Everyone who knows anything about pc's knows its a huge blunder, even worse than Vista.

Apparently I have unleashed the wrath of irrational fanboys here.

Sure, but it's just your opinion that MS is doing something "completely different and with a completely different direction". I see it as exactly the same as the PS4 (though with probably weaker hardware) but with a bunch of restrictions heaped on top. There's lots of hand waving about the "cloud" which may or may not end up being a big deal. But Sony can implement that later as well. This thing is not nearly as innovative as the iPod, iPhone, or iPad. I get what you were trying to say (that all of those were ridiculed initially as well and look how dominant they became). But I just don't see it being nearly as innovative as you do. It has some slight potential but that remains to be seen and can probably be copied/incorporated by their competitor anyway. I.e., the two systems are not that different in core capability that Sony can't be just as "innovative".

Agreed. I don't see anything innovative on other consoles. I have no doubts I'll be playing mostly the same types of games (and often the same games--just sequel-ized) with a shinier coat of paint regardless of which console(s) I own next gen.

I guess maybe we'll see more Kinect intergration on X1 than PS Eye on PS4 since the Kinect is packed in. But that's "innovation" I don't want personally as I hate camera/motion/voice stuff.

I'm really not super stoked for next gen as I'm fine with current gen graphics. But I'll pick up a PS4 day 1 (already preordered) just to support them for not imposing similar restrictions. But I figure my PS3 will get more play until at least mid 2014 if not beyond (360 I'm almost done with the backlog and will sell that off to help fund the PS4 purchase).

I do agree that Microsoft has many more times the resources as Sony such that there is no way they will let this system "fail" outright.  They will push the marketing hard, and use their piles o' cash if needed (buying exclusives, fixing problems, etc).

So given that, it is certainly not a bad idea to purchase an Xbox One.  Microsoft will back it up pretty solidly no matter what happens.  So either it is an unexpected success out of the gate or they will come back swinging to make sure it recovers vs. the PS4.  If the situation were reversed Sony would have been in big trouble.

I agree with you, I use windows 8 because it's fast and plays nice with my SSD. But it is frustrating to use. The missing start menu and the clunky start screen are my 2 biggest gripes. Can't wait for the Windows Blue patch to make it the product it should have been day 1.

As for people thinking I'm a fanboy, you can see clearly in my sig that I have my xbox gamertag posted proudly.. well not so proudly anymore. My disdain for Microsoft is not because of fanboyism, but because I am absolutely sickened by the way Microsoft is abusing gamers and it's brand in the way that they are and I'd love nothing more than to see them fail so they have to revisit some of these horrible decisions.

What does this have to do with what I wrote about don't underestimate their competitors? Also when has Microsoft stepped into unknown territory and created a revolutionary new product lol. Zune? Surface? WIndows Phone 8? Windows 8?

They even shut down what I think was a nice device called "Courier" designed by J Allard's team. The only thing they got left is Xbox which I still care about. All of Microsoft's previous products are reactions to their respective competitors. Each one of them failed to gain mainstream success cause they reacted too slowly to change. Why do you think the Xbox One is so heavily focused on TV? It is cause Microsoft is reacting again to Apple, which is rumored to be working on a new Apple TV.

When I said "fail" I really meant "lose significant market share", which IMO is the same thing in this case.  Of course if this thing blunders Microsoft won't go under or anything but it would continue a pattern of significant missteps on their part (Windows Phone/Tablet/8).  Sony is of course also in significant financial strain, but last time I checked they seem to have all the positive momentum coming out of E3.  The Vita is still a big concern for them but even that seems to be slowly gaining a little steam (baby steps on this one).

And there is also a difference between Microsoft "pushing the limits" and "having a bold new direction" and making mistakes financially.  The X1 having the Online restrictions it does limits its potential customer base considerably, that is a fact.  Being so restrictive against used games limits its appeal to many.  They are limiting their possible sales before this thing even launches.  Think about how many more possible customers the PS4 has at this moment in the US alone, millions of people already.

I also wish someone would explain to me how any single bit of what Microsoft is doing with all these restrictions is actually good for the consumer.  What the hell are we actually gaining from this?  If cloud computing is the only thing then good luck with that.  I hope all the restrictions and extra $100 is worth it.

Don Mattrick says the Xbox One is cheap-I think one thing we can all agree is that somebody needs to fire MS PR department because my first priority would've been telling Don to just shut the fuck up.
I was wondering if they hushed him since there hasn't been a stupid quote from him in a few days.. guess not.
"We're over-delivering value against other choices I think consumers can get. Any modern product these days you look at it [and] $499 isn't a ridiculous price point. We're delivering thousands of dollars of value to people, so I think they're going to love it when they use it."
lol, wut?

Right up there with the Sony exec saying people would work a second job to afford a PS3 because it would be so great.

Amazing how out of touch some of these corporate reps can be.

Can't this just be named the X1 bitching thread now? That's all that is going on in here. If you guys are so dead set on going over to Sony and are all in for the PS4 then start
now and head on over there. This is just getting ridiculous.

  • If you don't like it, you can ignore this thread.
  • You asked for a thread for those that are excited for the X1, you have one.
On another note, neogaf have posted a list of retailers with pre-order standings for X1 vs PS4 currently.

To be fair there is always that fine line between too expensive and what people are willing to pay. I think Apple has perfect the art of pricing. They charge a premium price for their products and people seem to buy them no matter what. Literally, i know of folks who got a part time job to pay for the iPhone when it first came out. Heck my law school roommate went to work for Apple just so he could get the iPad1 at a discount. Apple seems to have a good sense of what the market will bear.

That said, I think M$ is totally off base with their pricing, as was Sony with the PS3. The hardcore gaming crowd will not support overpriced consoles the same way the mass market does with other electronics. Gaming is very much a content driven industry. The perfect combination of compelling content and solid price lead to success. Now, M$ might be trying to reach out to the mass market and they have already started marketing the X1 as a media hub or streaming device. I don't know how well they'll do but I'm willing to see what they have to offer.

Was way earlier in the thread :)

I linked a very early report of presales numbers from ASDA in the UK. A few posters seemed upset because they thought it was simply a grocery store. Absolutely no one did any research on the subject, so I linked a little hint about Walmart. Again, no one did any research... to find that ASDA is owned by Walmart. Kinda let the post die there, but evidently pitfallharry would like to bring it up, so I figured I'd explain my post since lazy people are lazy ;)

Ah well I saw you quoting me so I assume you're trying to discredit the sources I posted except mine are from Polygon, Giant Bomb, and Penny Arcade, all popular gaming resources. And the Polygon article really carries weight since they are funded by Microsoft.

There is a thread for positive discussion only. So I would suggest anyone not wanting to hear any complaints go there:

Anyone see this, is that a fan on the back of the Kinect?

Ah, sorry for the confusion :)

Wasnt in regards to the controller at all.

I'm not sure we want to get in to debating the controller though, do we? Since a quick search shows over 70 articles for the Xbox One controller alone, both positive and negative. Similar for the PS4 controller.

Personally, I liked this review the best out of the 20 or 30 that I read for both. http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/xbox-one-vs-ps4-controller-showdown/feature Just discusses both in pretty good detail, listing numerous positives for both controllers.

Regarding the Kinect, here's a tear down shot:

Thanks for that.article on the controllers, showed some pretty in depth shots

As for the picture of the innards of the Kinect, doesn't look like a fan is present, so maybe the hole is for the mic? Strange.

There is a thread for positive discussion only. So I would suggest anyone not wanting to hear any complaints go there:

That forum is too boring and only has like 10 comments on it. All the action is here seeing people bitch and moan about a system they hate but they still have to make hundreds of comments about it.

Welcome to the internet, glad you crawled out from under that rock you've been living under.

Believe it or not, the entire Internet is not like that, just the shitty parts.

I think that gives you an idea of the numbers of people that are not happy with what MS is doing, don't you think? We aren't gong to suppress that discussion in this thread so that's why the other one was made. If no one chooses to use it, then, well, I guess no one really wants a thread that only talks about the positive points.

I sure don't hate the console or games, just the drm, and used game restrictions. Whether Microsoft cares or not that is up to them but I'm free to discuss it with other people that share the same opinion as me. So I don't get how it is "bitching".
