Yakuza 4 - General Discussion - Out Now!

Gametrailers gave it an 8+ (can't remember if it was 8.3 or what).
Gametrailers is a way better source for reviews than most of the other websites or X-Play.

Not debating which is the best source, just mentioning a review I saw. Tho an 8+ is a bit much if you ask me. In terms of a 10 point scale (which is a stupid system, might I add, half of the numbers are useless, 5 point scale is much better) I'd give it a 7. Sorry, all the great Yakuza stuff is there, but the story was just overall weaker for me.

Yeah, I agree. Actually, I will go as far as to say that point scales are dumb.
I like the letter score better.

For me, this game is a B+ and maybe even a A-. I really like the variety of the guys you get to play. I'm finding myself totally getting sidetracked on the side-quests this time, and going to the casino and playing blackjack. Anyway, I'll reserve final judgment until I finish it, but I feel like I definitely got my $60 worth.

I personally don't rate games on the side activities, just the main campaign. Because you get great games like Red Dead Redemption that have a great story but also tons of side stuff to do, but also even greater games like Uncharted 2 which has basically nothing outside the main story (other than treasures).

I'm having fun doing the side stuff in Yakuza 4, but it has no bearing on the score I gave it for its campaign.
X-Play gave it a 3/5 (same score I gave it), but they felt the need to focus on the pervy and weird stuff.
The weird shit is the best part. Will you ever forget the first Revelation scene?

Nope, loved that. That was actually one of the highlights of the X-Play review.

Also, picked up the game today and see what that free DLC was. I didn't see anything about being able to level anymore, but we did indeed get a new trust level for Haruka, Additionally two new special karaoke segments were added, one is Hana (the skinny version) singing, and another is a duet between her and Akiyama.

On top of that you get a whopping 14 item packs (each containing 3-4 items). Among these are very useful items, including great armor and weapons with an insane amount of attack strength (ATTK110-115), which will probably be useful on bosses in Hard and Ex-Hard. Also among these item packs is another Get-Rich-Quick-Card that, along with one I already had, got me the pachinko trophy.

Holy crap, I just stumbled upon the old man
who offers you 3 million yen for playing Russian roulette. Now I got 4 million yen :)

Just when I think the game is getting repetitive, they throw this in there
Man I love this game!
Hell, playing through the game two more times is gonna be every bit of 30-40 hours right there.
This.

I wouldn't mind doing the side-quest related trophies since they don't seem terribly hard and the grind may actually be enjoyable to achieve my first platinum in nearly two years.

But I just can't see myself spending the additional time beating the game on Normal then EX-Hard. If it were just one more run then I'd probably do it.

Thusly, my desire to get the side-quest trophies is now significantly diminished.

Game is still a lot of fun, though.

Is this shit free?

Where were you 6 hours before you posted this? I did that substory yesterday and chickened out, thinking they'd stop me. I was so pissed, hello Mr. White Checkmark.
Is this shit free?
Sure is.

Platnium progress:
Ex-Hard, Ultimate Skill, Max-Lvl Tanimura, and the rest of Tanimura's substories to go. Tanimura's the hold up here, I'm almost done with Ultimate Skill but I'm stuck on one of his trials and one of his speed trials. God, I hate you, Tanimura. I hate you with all my hate.

It was in chapter 4 of Tanimura's section (first playthrough).
I thought the whole "Bridge" thing was all over, but happened to walk by some building (completely by accident) and got a phone call from Detective tranny (can't remember his name). I had just left Shellac after talking to him, and decided to go back in and talk to the information guy. He told me to go to the casino, that something shady is going on there.

I was kind of worried to carry the story through; I hadn't saved in a while, but I figured the worst that could happen is that I have a Game Over screen and lose about 1/2 hour or so.

I kind of thought Tanimura's side-quests were over, because I kept going to Shellac to talk to the guy for hints, but he kept saying that he's got nothing for me. It was kind of by accident that I spoke to him, and got the sub-story with the kids spray painting graffiti in Little Asia, and also got the story with Mei Hwa almost getting kidnapped.

To max out Tanimura, I used that IRF-7 machine to fight "The Wall," it game me a lot of HEAT for that.
I also banged 2 hostesses, and they gave me 10,000 experience each.

Who can resist a game made by this guy?

But you know, I think we're sitting pretty now. While we had to wait years for 2 and 3 to release, it seems we're going on the yearly route after the games original Japanese release. And for a game with sooo much text (seriously, I say the Yakuza games could be the most text heavy games... ever) I think it coming out a year later in English is incredibly impressive. And SEGA wasn't even on-ball with Yakuza 4 right after 3's release either. I say all is forgiven at this point.

Sure, I've spotted a few typos in Yakuza 4, but in the 80 hours I've played the game so far, that isn't even notable. I wonder how many poor souls ate, slept, and breathed translating to make this possible in... I'm gonna say 8 months.
I honestly don't care about Black Panther... I so regret buying a PSP.
Sad. There's some really good stuff on the PSP.

yeah great game! 60+ hours on my first walkthrough. Got all the trophies now except to beat hard/exhard. Im gonna save that for another day. and yeah, Tanimura needs to bang some chix to get to level 20 in 1st plathrough. lol, great game!

Hey guys, anyone know what the Golden Gun does? Is it unlimited ammo or something?

Also, I'm missing one locker key A4, Taihei Blvd., and I can't find it anywhere. According to this map, it's supposed to be somewhere around Beam, but I can't find it. I even have the locker key locator and I get nothing.

Yeah, no kidding. That's harder than beating Ex-Hard normally would ever be. Besides, unless you get 4 of them I don't see how you'd breeze through Ex-Hard outside of a single character.

you could technically take it off before the final saves and put it in your group locker, then grab it out from someone else's hideout, cuz i think group inventory is shared in new game premium, but yeah, that's super tough. you gotta earn over 5000 in all gambling/casino/massage/batting/all hostess? wow, lots of minigames stuff.

oh and i downloaded the upgrade pack free from psn, i presume you go to bob, he just gives all 4 characters a energy/heat bump?

Finally beat the Ultimate Skill Challenges. Holy crap, some of them were super super cheap and annoying.

Planescape's got Yakuza beat in the text department. Kind of an apples to oranges comparison, though.

As much as I wanted to hate 3, I played it and loved it. Looking forward to 4 once it drops in price a little.

Good to see this back at the top! I just picked this game again for the first time in months to finish trophies. Have to get the very hard clear trophy and the boiled turkey trophy. Was hoping since it was 10 bucks on black friday that a lot of people would pick this up.
