Hello,

Since you work at gamestop can you please tell me the rules for obtaining the pokemon stylus that comes with the game when you preorder it. I have an employee at a local ebgames here telling me that you need to reserve BOTH pokemon games in order to get the stylus. I would like to know if he is BS'ing me or if this really is the case.

As we all know it is completely unecessary to buy both versions of this game as every pokemon can be obtained in one cart by using the global trade center which is where you trade pokemon over wifi internet. If you do not have wifi at home and have no money to buy a wifi usb connector then you can always go to a free public wifi hotspot, so there are options for everyone. If you don't know right away thats ok, just post back when you do know, thanks!
If you reserve Pearl, you get the Pearl style. Reserve Diamond, get the Diamond stylus. Reserve both, get a stylii holder.

He is definitely BSing you.
You can always get a refund on a preorder deposit. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a LIAR.
Thanks man, appreciate the response :)

Do you know if GS will be doing another "Trade 3 games get an $10 in credit" for last gen (Xbox/PS2/GC) games? I have a bunch I want to get rid of.

I need to know how long the store warranty covers used games. Bought a couple of used games two weeks ago that seemed to be screwed up and got one answer(10 days) when buying it. But called a few days ago and got a different answer(30 days).

So which one is right and which one is BS'ing me? Just need to know, so I don't go up there and be told the warranty is up.

Typically it's every 3-6 months or so when they do that.

CAG will catch it when it happens.

If you still have the receipt the answer should be right there. All i know for sure is that if its less than 7 days you can get a complete refund...

New unopened items only get 14 days, which is lower than anywhere else and is a lame policy.

Anyone else find the "Buy GoW2 for $15" promo a bit misleading???

I haven't seen it mentioned in the thread, or the board for that matter, but it's a complete sham.

Step 1: Buy the game for $50
Step 2: Trade the game in within 30 days of it's street date and receive $35 credit
Stept3: You only paid $15 for it!!!

What a crock.

Sadly I can speak of this first hand because I work there, weekends only though. For the past week or so, and it still may be going on for that matter, we've had to answer the phone with that promotion. Everyone in the store thought it was very misleading, but the regional manager apparently thought it was a great deal and was bragging about it to our store manager when he stopped by the other week.

What? That's the same advertisement/deal GameCrazy ran a few months back that everyone laughed at, but the example was with Kingdom Hearts 2.

Those Kingdom Hearts 2 and GoW2 "deals" show just how much these useless stores are reaching and just how smart they think their customers are.

I say they all should close down, Online and BB/Wal-Mart/Target are good enough for game distribution. There's zero need for a B&M retail game presence.

I know a lot of the time people don't know what they are selling, but I think they might have a better chance in a small environment. I know nearly everything about my store, usually right down to what's in stock and the prices (although currently my store is a video store not games but same diff).
retrovertigo I hear that. I just refuse their "last copy" stickered to death new games anymore. It wasn't so bad when it would happen once in a great while, but lately it seems anything thats not a new release is the last copy.

By the way nice thread Kuros. Most of the guys working around in the stores by me are pretty cool.
I've passed on items because of that more than once. Once a brand new game didn't have the manual and they wouldn't even discount it (it was a rare GC game, so I took it anyway).

Also, before Phoenix Wright was reprinted to death, I picked up the last "shelf" copy of it. I asked, but was given no discount--- not that it would have mattered since I wanted Phoenix Wright. ;-)

Same thing happened to me. They proceed to tell me the game is new, yet the shrinkwrap has been opened, and the game taken out of the case.

It is too bad that I went to 10+ gamestores before I found that one, and was desperate to have it, or I would have caused more of a fuss.
New unopened games get 30 days. It says so on receipt.
YMMV? Because I bought something there in January brand new and mine said 14 days to return.

Hey I have the application what do I write to answer "Game software knowledge" and "Pc Knowledge"

It's like this on the application:

Video Game Systems: Genesis, N64, Playstation, PS2, XBOX, XBOX 360, PSP, PC
Game Software Knowledge _________________________________________
PC Knowledge ___________________________________________________

^I put names of games and types like Role-Playing or Action-Adventure.

Any advice on buying a used Xbox, the old one at Gamestop?

Edit: Since when is it against Gamestop policy to not give out quantities of stock?
I just called one of local Gamestops asking how many Xbox systems they had and was told they aren't supposed to say. I guess I got a really lazy employee or a new one.

How much and how long is the extended warranty on used videogame consoles?

I'm going to finally buy an Xbox and just wanted to know if it is worth spending a little more on an extended warranty on it, thanks ahead!

Depends on the price.

if i preorder a game from register monkey a, and i cancel on register monkey b, do both of them get bad numbers or just the sucka i cancelled on?

imagine if we have to assume everyones a theif. Which a good retail employee does.
:applause: Good job. That's about the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

A good retail employee assumes that a customer is coming in to BUY.

Assuming every customer is a thief totally ignores statistics. Most theft comes from within the company. Should every customer assume that all employees are thieves?

I also love the post from another poster saying that CAGs don't matter to Gamestop. Casual buyers only drop loads of money in the summer and at Christmas time. Otherwise it's just us roaming your stores.

Why for used games, the used sticker, goes on the spine of the insert instead of the case nowadays? This is a recent thing...I wonder if it was a mandate from corporate.
Why for used games, the used sticker, goes on the spine of the insert instead of the case nowadays? This is a recent thing...I wonder if it was a mandate from corporate.
I'm not sure if it's mandatory from corporate, but my manager tells us to put the used stickers on the spine because usually managers have to scan each game or a section of games to keep inventory i think.

Well...I've seen used stickers on the spine for many games. That's fine since the sticker is on the outside of the case. But, I noticed that newer traded in titles are getting the stickers on the spine of the cover of the game.

To me...that policy just seems rather odd. It's stupid extra work for the employee to put the sticker on since you have slip the cover out of the case and put the sticker on, and same for the customer for the reverse reason (take cover out of case and remove sticker). Not only that, but you do run into the chance of leaving sticker residue on the cover of the game.

They put them on the cover because the stickers on the spine wear off very fast and start peeling off so some stores put it on the inside which is very annoying.

Do you ship out defective games to the "ebgames.com" or "gamestop.com online used sales dept."? ;)
whoever you cancelled it with will get a bad number
And by canceled on do you mean Monkey A or B? It could be interpreted either way.

No

A bit old now, but my best guess is that it stems from the sort of pointless paranoia that comes with businesses that full well know that any sort of investigation on their business practices would deflate sales. I'm experiencing this a bit while trying to do a story on the used game trade, and it basically seems like businesses run by rapacious assholes tend to ferment a corporate culture of baselessly assuming that everyone else is a rapacious asshole too. This tends to manifest in self-destructive practices that abuse their own personnel into the same pointless paranoia i.e. secret shoppers. Corporate is so fucking headless and abusive that giving out seemingly harmless information might result in firing, so they might just refuse to give it out even if they can't fathom the planet on which the information could be used against them.

Explanation two, also from my experience, is that he's a register monkey who doesn't know shit and/or doesn't feel like finding out, but wants to make himself feel more important by pretending it's a trade secret. Every now and again you simply get some retard employee who's read The Da Vinci Code once too often and figures everyone who doesn't follow along blindly is a part of some conspiracy.

Now, let's have some real questions:

In reality, how frequently does GS try to pinch their own employees with this secret shopper shit? And what do the secret shoppers usually ask?

I've heard there is a company policy against discussing company issues in public or online. If this exists, how strictly is it enforced, and by whom?

Profit margins for new games, in as exact numbers as possible?

Publishers apparently pay GS for shelf space. What are the details of this practice? Is it just Nintendo, MS, and Sony, or is it down to individual publishers? Or both? And how much do they pay for this shelf space?

Who calculates the used prices, and by what criteria?

What is the percentage of profit for used games? Is it the same for all games, or is it variable? Can the trade-in price go down, while the sell price remains the same?

What do people generally use their trade-in credit for, new games, or used games?

What exactly are the opportunities for career advancement in the company? Is there a glass ceiling at the level of manager or store manager?

Of management, what's the cutoff point for those who would be on our side, so to speak? Are the managers usually cool, with those higher being in corporate's pocket?

Can the trade-in price go down, while the sell price remains the same?

I can answer this one, I think the trade in price CAN go down while the sell price remains the same. They can certainly lower their trade in price if they are getting too many units of one game so that the store does not become overstocked with 1 game no one wants to buy and everyone is trading in, yet the selling price of that game will remain the same. I THINK the trade in prices are mostly corporate though.
so if i preorder with pretty girl, and then cancel the order on preorder king/dick manager, will i be hurting pretty girl?
No the girl will be fine

Now, let's have some real questions:

In reality, how frequently does GS try to pinch their own employees with this secret shopper shit? And what do the secret shoppers usually ask?

I'd say about 2-3 times a month depending on the store's ability to get "numbers" (subs/Res). The secret shopper usually asks about an upcoming game that is due to come out soon, and we're supposed to ask them if they want a reserve and blah blah. So primarily we're graded on wheter we give our sales pitch and introduce the discount card.

I've heard there is a company policy against discussing company issues in public or online. If this exists, how strictly is it enforced, and by whom?

Yes there is a policy against this, we've gotten a few memos about this and supposedly corporate has several employees who's sole purpose is to scour the internet and make sure there are no "leaks" about upcoming deals etc. Personally I haven't heard of anyone getting in trouble, but gamestop states that if they catch anyone that they are to be immediately terminated

No idea sorry.

Who calculates the used prices, and by what criteria?

Corporate sets all used prices, and the criteria depends all on the rarity and demand of the game and also if there is an abundance in the title (like GTA 3 or metal gear solid)

What is the percentage of profit for used games? Is it the same for all games, or is it variable? Can the trade-in price go down, while the sell price remains the same?

Generally the profit is around 200-300 % depending on the game. Trade in prices can go down and the selling price can stay the same, personally i've seen the trade in prices change on a weekly basis unless their is a trade in deal going on.

What do people generally use their trade-in credit for, new games, or used games?

People generally buy the used games with their credit due to some of the perks of the card or if their is a sale going on. I always recommend the used games because its easier to return if a customer doesn't like it. So they wouldn't have wasted all their credit on a game they dont like.

What exactly are the opportunities for career advancement in the company? Is there a glass ceiling at the level of manager or store manager?

It all depends on wheter you can get your numbers and also to have a good manager who can vouch for you. You can go up as far as District manager if you were a good manager and are on good terms with the higher people. But generally the highest people go is store manager.

Of management, what's the cutoff point for those who would be on our side, so to speak? Are the managers usually cool, with those higher being in corporate's pocket?
Well it all depends on the manager, if you interact with them and occassionally give them reservations and such they'll be more inclined to bend over backwards for you. But usually if the manager is understanding he'll be on your side and try to work something out. And usually if you call the District manager and give a reasonable argument they will also generally give in to whatever your complaint is about.

Hope this helped, I might be inaccurate about some stuff since i'm only a peon in this corporation.

It's actually much appreciated. The more people i can get to either fill me in or confirm what others have told me the better.

on a side note, this week many stores are recieving wii's and holding them until saturday because some stores are doing a pokemon tournament. Hope this helps anyone looking for a wii. Approximately 15-20 per store. Hope I don't get caught by gamestop O.O
