Your collection - post a photo - show us what'cha got!
They finally posted that my area will be affected until AT LEAST Sunday @ 11:59 pm. Staying at my mother's house, while great for allowing me to get work done and not freeze to death, is making me absolutely nuts. She's borderline hoarder (but not like the TV show. She's got OCD-like cleanliness going on, but just lots of stuff everywhere, albeit nice stuff). It's hard to move around without breaking stuff. I had to take over a chunk of the 3rd floor so I could sequester myself and get some work done. I hope, hope, HOPE that the electric company ends up ahead of schedule.

Working from home is hard enough. Working from my mom's home is crazy making o_O
are you sure you are not a hoarder what with your game collection and all???

Hey Wiggy - Could you try a Kickstarter to help get you up and going with your business? I know you are moving along with it, but could a Kickstarter help get you really up in full swing and give you more time to get some cool mods going?

You have cool enough products in hand now that you may find people who give you money for the idea in exchange for a Wiggy T-shirt or something.

This was completely off topic, but thought I'd pot it here lol.

Oh snap... that's a great idea.

Don't misunderstand me, I was in no way implying that I am not something of a hoarder myself. I hoard the shit out of materials. I save like every scrap of plastic, wood, metal, etc. that I happen in to. The only big difference is that my house is easily navigated by even the largest person. You have to be like 2' tall and 30lbs to navigate my mother's house without leaving a mess of broken bits in your wake. She just has TONS of little fragile items EVERYWHERE and she's super tiny, so she has no problem navigating through them all.

In reality, almost all of us here have some hoarding behaviors. Hoarding isn't always about a house full of rats and garbage. That's just one end of the spectrum.

I do plan on doing so when I need it, like for those console shells. Right now I don't and I don't want to go through all the effort before I need to. I put the SNES shell on hold because I don't think I would ever sell enough to even pay for the tooling costs. That said, I do have plans for the same sort of product for other consoles like the SNES phat and the Neo Geo MVS consolization. Those two are potentially a LOT more economically viable pursuits. I also plan on purchasing a small rapid prototype machine in the next 12 months, so one-off/small run projects like the SNES mini shell will be possible, albeit at a much higher cost per unit, but with MUCH less tooling/R&D cost.
I'm with ya ;)

I may just make you "an actual step stool". Just saying...

Aaaaand into the sig it goes!

Do eet!

Well, I have a good excuse this week. We lost power Monday afternoon, and it's 52° in our house. I'm currently at my mother's house a few miles away making a sad attempt to get work done. That said, I did get these little guys all set to go ;)

DSC03009.jpg

Dude, been SOOOOO busy! I've got about 3 dozen personal projects to finish up, whether it's fixing a car, some crap around the house that the wife's been bugging me about, or that damned AGS-101 in a DMG-001 that's abotu 75% done and collecting dust (just...need...to...put...it...together...)

I will find you and give you the biggest wedgie evar!

Seriously, I will murder you in your sleep :p
Forgive me if you've explained already, but where do you get the hardware for these screens? Do you strip SP models and modify them to fit the original model? Are these produced specifically for you?

yea i certainly agree hoarding is not always about rats and garbage. my comment was mostly intended as a friendly joke/insult because i do agree there are different levels of hoarding but i do know most people tend to think of hoarding as the TLC tv show.

i do wonder if it is partly genetic? i know my parents would probably never admit it unless i explained it clearly but they are certainly a type of hoarder, my grand parents are as well one(one did the trash version of it), and i know me and some of my siblings have that hoard tendency. so i am curious if it is at all partly genetic. and well of course your mom and you both have a hoarding personality.

i suppose though in your moms case she is tiny and can get around it so it is not a problem for her as long as she doesnt have rats and garbage everywhere. although i do have to wonder just because i like wondering how these things is what end of the spectrum do massive collections of things fall under the hoarding behavior? because some collections(mine included are insane) and i am curious about digital hoarding as well i know im not the only person with 3 TB of crap around(ive deleted 2 TB already lol)

You asked, and you shall receive.

This is the first set of pictures I've shown of my collection. Sorry for the shitty quality. I'm currently using some crappy shelving... but I'm gonna be upgrading at the end of the year.

Anyway, here we go:

I did at one point strip SPs, but now I have a supplier in China for the screens. The adapter cables are acquired through the same supplier as the screens. He does sell them to folks across the pond, but his English isn't great, and shipping costs are pricey. I've been working with him for a while to get things all set up and making sense, and now I'm the exclusive US distributor for the kits :D

Oh, don't worry, I totally wasn't butt-hurt or anything. I didn't take it as an accusation or anything. We all know we have collecting issues here ;)

Hoarding falls under the psychological category of "behavioral", which means that it's not hard-wired into us, but rather acquired along the way or as a symptom of what may be a physiological problem. It's often a coping mechanism for trauma, as the shows often suggests. Unlike what the TV shows would like you to think, it's not considered a disorder of its own. It's also NOT considered (at this point) to be the direct result of any physiological disorder like ADHD, OCD, or Bipolar. However, it most definitely can be a symptom/manifestation of a physiological impairment like OCD.

We ALL have some sort of acquired behavioral issues. What really matters is how much it negatively impacts your life and those around you. In my case, the only other person that would really be impacted directly is my wife, and she has no problem with my ever growing collection. I do occasionally exceed my monthly gaming budget, but am by no means thousands of dollars in debt because of it. So, I personally don't feel that there's a concern for myself and my behavior. I'm willing to bet that the vast majority of folks here are in a similar boat.

I feel that if it's not crippling, then don't try and "fix" it ;)

Yeaup, I'm just waiting for Skarlet to complete the female assassin gang.

Pop Culture shock also has an incredibly sexy Kitana statue coming out that I'm dying to get... but it might just be too expensive :(.

Impressive collection, APC! Those clear drawers are a great storage solution.

I've been meaning to photograph/catalog my collection for awhile now, so I've finally done it.
Here is just about everything video gaming related I own, minus magazines and guides.

Can anyone tell me if there's any significance to the color of this NES sleeve (on the right?)

I normally don't like those drawers but those are really nice. I like how they're clear and that you have the games angled so you can see everything. The statues are nice touch... I wanted to get Raiden and Kitana but they're too expensive for me to justify.

Are those CEs safe, stacked like that? It seems like they'd all come tumbling down if someone knocked into that shelf/table/whatever you have them on top of.

Make sure you post the rest of your stuff. I don't know why, but it seems like a lot of CAGs post parts of their collection and never come back to post the rest.

I got a mini shelf and decided to put the overhang in my room to some use and was able to clear up all the overflow in my collection. Here is the pic of the shelves:

Closeups:

I really dislike how the DS games are stacked on top of eachother but they'll do until I am able to get some new shelves & make some new bracket holes (the holes already in the shelf are way too spaced out). I've added quite a few strategy guides to my collection as well but i'll hold off on taking pics of those as my camera has a hard time getting the spines to come out clear enough to read the titles.

I wish I had more space, but I don't :\. The clear drawers actually work very nicely.

The CE's are actually on a heavy dresser that's against a wall, so you can't really budge it at all. The CE's are also stabilized by some shelving boards that are mostly hidden. You can see one of the boards on the right.

I'll try and get more close up shots of my games so you guys can see what all my PS1, Dreamcast, NES, SNES and N64 titles are. My DVD and Blu-ray collections aren't anything great... but I'll take pictures of them.

Honestly, I just don't have the space and resources that a bunch of you guys do. My gaming set-up is really ugly, lol. You can see all the wires and whatnot. It's cool though. I'm always working to make things look nicer.

I'm saddened that you didn't mark you sealed stuff this time Bez...:p I'm super jealous of your sealed Ninja Five-O, Seasons, and MGS.

Those boxed DS games (Radiant Historia, Knights of the Nightmare, etc.) look like they're getting crushed... why not just put them on the top row? It'll be a bit odd, but no different than keeping you CEs separate.

Not marking em was mainly a time-saver. You can still see plenty of seals though. NFO is a definite gem in my collection. I paid $80 for it on a CAG lowball at the beginning of this year and have only seen 2 new copies online since then.

I did bend the top corner of Radiant a bit when I was moving stuff around, but the games still have plenty of wiggle room and there is no tension when you pull the game out so the weight of the two rows above isnt causing any damage.

Incidentally, I was trying to find room for my ZoE HD LE and realized I ran out of room again... after I spent like an entire day two weeks ago making more room. WTF...

Damn, sucks that I missed that lowball. I would paid way more than that... or at least, have made you pay more.

Awesome! Actual pictures!!!

Berzerker, great collection! I'm cringing a little looking at some of the cardbord boxes (Skyward Sword CE, Super Robot T DS) and seeing that American Idol box stinking up your Wii shelf but loving all the other tripple A goodness. Thanks for keeping the thread alive (Wiggy, finish your shelves already damn it ;)).

August, another fantastic collection. Holy CE's batman, it's nice to see some fighting game love. Left wondering if you use a pad or a fight stick and how you decide whether to buy stuff for 360 or PS3.

Pictures rock.

Damn you Vinny! ;)

It was my lowball. I will admit I was too lazy to put that one up on ebay. Plus I only paid $35 for that shipped in the trade forum. :D

Glad it found a good home with Bezerker! :)

I believe that the metallic sleeves were only on Nintendo brand games and only before 1988. I think Zelda 1 was among the last to have one. It HAD to be a cost-saving measure. No other reason that I can think of.

The Skyward Sword was the last one Kmart had, and considering it was when people were selling it for $160 on ebay, I took what I could find. As for the American Idol, its one of those ones games thats on my shelf for rarity's sake (at the time I bought it, the lowest one on ebay/amazon was $275, sadly it seems the demand has gone down a lot since no one on the cover is there anymore). Pony Friends, Winx Club, and some of the other kiddy/sports titles fall under that umbrella as well.

I'm looking at getting some of those clear PET protector boxes for my box games, but i also have a buncha comic book bags so im thinking they might work if i fold em & tape em. Seems like a much cheaper option

Get PET boxes for your soft-boxed games (like Game Boy games). They're great simply because of well they protect corners.

For hard cased games, those boxes aren't as good since they're not made to fit. I bought a bunch of those protective DVD storage bags but don't like them since they're made too tall and have really stiff seams. I want to try out a few other brands but they all seem to be the same.

Here's the inside of SNES Drawer #2. Not many games, but they're good ones!

I'll lay out my NES and N64 games later for pictures.

I've really slowed down on my retro collecting... and well, game collecting as a whole. I'm still definitely doing it... but a lot of my money has been going towards comics lately.

Whoa! I had no idea it was even rare. Its crazy, some of the shovelware that can become valuable. When confronted with a chance to pick up a rare but shitty game on the cheap for my collection, my gamer side usually wins out over my collector side. Case in point: A couple years ago I found 5 sealed copies of Madden 08 DS in a bargain bin for 8 bucks each when they were going for 60-100 on ebay. I planned to auction them but never got around to it. I tried them out in the shelves for about a minute but that stack of ugly EA spines, and the sheer stupidity of owning 5 copies of the same shitty madden game ate away at my soul. It took less than 5 minutes for them to find their way into a drawer where they sit, alone and unloved to this day.

Still, your setup is great. "To each their own" is why I love this thread.
Any tips on opening Game Boy boxes? You know, ones that are like new, so I don't damage that those tabs.
Take a box cutter to it, so the tabs don't get damaged.

You also want to make sure to pull both sides of the tab out rather than pulling on the sides of the flap. Make sure to distribute the pressure evenly on both sides of the tab and to give a bit of support in the middle as well since that is usually where it gets bent.
I was mostly being fictitious =P
I thought you actually meant use the box cutter to make sure the tabs on the inside aren't in the way of the flap when you pull them out since I sometimes have to use a straight edge of some sort and make sure the tabs aren't in the way and I stick it in there to push the tabs in so they don't get caught on the way out. But yes, I most definitely misinterpreted what you initially said. XD

I meant to cut the box, and the tabs won't get touched, but I probably should have been less subtle =P

I thought you meant it the way you meant it. Though Square's advice is actually useful.
Anyway, I got it open undamaged. Thanks for the advice. Now if only there were an easier way to remove the Gamestop sticker from this cart.

Here's a trick that I've been reluctant to share since it seems to be completely unknown in the game world and one of the services that I plan to offer is restoration.

bestine.gif

This stuff is hands down the BEST for removing stickers from carts, especially when those stickers are on a label. It flashes off faster than almost anything besides lacquer thinner, will NOT damage labels underneath, and takes very little effort to make it work unlike things such as goo gone.

I go through the shit like it's Coca Cola. An invaluable tool for restoring old, sticky carts to their former glory! You can get it at art supply stores. It's intended purpose is rubber cement removal.

It doesn't damage the label at all? Interesting. I don't have a need for it currently, but I'm rather curious because Goo Gone often rubs the color off of labels, so it seems like something more effective would have a more pronounced side effect. Not that I don't believe you; it just sounds too good to be true. Heh. I'll have to test it out if a need ever arises.

Goo Gone is orange OIL. That's the problem right there. That stuff might soak into the label, and then it's there pretty much forever. I'll do a little vid demonstration for you guys in a bit. It's amazingly gentle to the artwork (which is why it's great in its intended application).

Trust me, when you use it, you'll feel like it's way too good to be true ;)
What about n64 labels? I've had the color rub off using just alcohol before.
N64 labels are still pretty touchy. I've got a few that are gonna lose their labels to some custom labels for a customer, so I can show you how well (or not well) it plays with them since they're gonna get scrapped anyway.

I actually like Goo Gone because it's an oil. It's easier to work with in some aspects since it spreads, therefore making it useful as a rubbing solution when letting it settle isn't enough.

But yeah, it does suck if you get it under labels. That's why I usually put some on a cotton swab when working with sensitive areas.
