Your opinion on La Pucelle Tactics

I'm pumped. But that doesn't really mean shit, I guess, since I was really pumped up for Disgaea and have yet to buy it (waiting in vain for a good deal)

I'm hoping that since it isn't being published by ATLUS there won't be too much trouble finding it for a discounted price, but i am really looking forward to it.

My only current gripes are they changed the name and Americanized the boxart. Hopefully Mastiff didn't get too carried away within the game.

What was the Japanese name? What did the box art look like? The box art I see on EBGames.com doesn't look Americanized to me.

*edit* Ok, I saw the Japanese box art here...

I still think the American one looks fine though.

yeah this will be one of those games that you either pay $50 for now or $70 for a couple years from now

The title was changed to La Pucelle:tactics. A small change but a noticable one, almost as if they thought the girl on the cover and the fancy sounding name would scare people away if they didn't already know it was a tactical game from the makers of Disgaea.

I dont like the americanized cover, it's still a japanese style artist but its a very poor one in comparison to the original japanese art, atlease Disgaea's american art was done by the same artist as the japanese box.

You can see the two of them together here:

Also something that disturbs me is that one character, "Croix", originally has a crusifix shaped gun but the art on the official page shows an altered gun with one part of it removed.... that's not a good sign.

Yeah, there's been editing. No one is sure how much, yet, except Mastiff, though they claim it's just minor graphical changes.

This game isn't being publised by ATLUS, so i don't know why you guys are saying that it is, and that it will be rare when it isn't even released yet, and that being said as well, how do you even know the official box art? Box art has been known to change.

The Japanese box art reminds me of Vision of Escaflowne. Also, is Mastiff that guy who's smoking ? That's a definite no-no in American releases unfortunately. Just reading this thread has made me anxious to play the game, and I don't even have a PS2! :(

It's made by Nippon Ichi the same developer as Disgaea, and the main character even made an apperance in Disgaea according to Gameforms.com (both game operate inthe same universe).

Atlus left Disgaea virtually unchaged but Mastif (the nort american publisher) apparently dosent have the balls to leave the game's art alone.

The art on the website right now mirrors the pic in the art on the American art in the site I just posted. The smoking character, Croix, could have been easily altered to remove the cig. Hell I could do it right now but I'm not being paid for it. paying a generic manga artist to make a boring cover wasnt the way to go.

...I dont like it... They're fighting demons and monsters yet they cant have crosses?

it just sounds dumb.

I might have bought it but now it just soudns like they changed it because they were too scared, I understand sensitivity but how much of that stuff was really going to offend? Frankly anyone that would have been offended by it in it's altered state wouldnt have bought it anyhow, so now I have to look at a game with things chopped off?

I was a bit annoyed when I heard Xenosaga had been edited, but I saw later it was edited by the actual develoeprs and not a 3rd party licencee and retained more of it's intent than what I'm seeing with la pucelle... I didnt touch Onimusha because of this "perceived possibility" of offence from 5 seconds of video which I later saw and litterallt said "that's it? what was the problem with that??" after being told, I thought it was ridiculous and swore never to buy it ever.

I think I'm gonna endup waiting for this one to hit the bargin bin. I'm not paying premium price for this... heck it may end up just like onimusha and never be in my collection at all.

I really like how he went through all that explaining how the crosses had nothing to do with the game and weren't even in it all that much but had to edit them anyways. And what the hell does smoking have to do with anything? This game is rated T, meaning above 14 right? If a 14 year old doesn't understand smoking then i don't know what the hell this world is turning into.

We live in a pretty uptight society. It's entirely possible for a game to become the center of a controversy for nothing more than a "cool" main character smoking, or the way it uses crosses as decoration. I can understand a developer wanting to steer clear of any potential controversy, especially since the game isn't likely to be a huge moneymaker as it is. The game doesn't suffer in the least from these changes, so what's the point in getting all upset about it?

After playing it for an hour and a half last night:
Disgaea is without a doubt BETTER.

However, La Pucelle in itself isn't anywhere close to the bad range. If anything it's like Disgaea Jr. The story doesn't lend itself to as much wackiness and is more map oriented. The Dark Portals aren't as much fun as Geo Panels. It'll be easier to learn for first time players than Disgaea, so that may be a good thing.

If you liked Disgaea, you'll probably like this one. If you thought Disgaea was too complicated, you'll like this one. If you only like FPS games, you'll probably not like this one.

I'd give it a 7.5/10

Yay! I got my copy today! Unfortunately, I've still got probably 40 hours of Xenogears until I can get to it. Lousy Square!
it sucks that its getting censored, but they did have a valid point.
A valid point? I read that article and I see no "valid point".

Removing and altering crosses in addition to removing a character's smoking habit just shows how piss poor and sensitive our media views our country.

The company that localized this game is a kid's company and it shows. Ridiculous. I really am tired of getting a cut product, even if it's in the smallest of ways just because I'm an American. Our freedom of speech and expression don't do much for us because of people not willing to respect that.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with free speech. This was a business decision on the part of Mastiff, nothing more. I know you'll probably say "but it's the principle of the thing!" but the changes they made REALLY have no effect on the game experience (I have the Japanese version, so I know) and getting upset about them is just silly. Just remember, if they hadn't decided to localize the game, you wouldn't be able to play it in English at all, unless you wanted to use some crappy fan translation.

A "business decision". Okay. We all know those sales are going to plummet if a character smokes and there are a few crosses. I guess you're right - I 100% see your side of the argument now.

Mastiff is a children's company and it shows.

If anything *you* are the one who is acting childish. If you want to not play the game because of a few trivial changes, that's up to you, but stop acting like this is such a big deal. The rest of us are busy enjoying the game...

I think you're the one who's looking too far in to my text. I'm just disagreeing, not starting an anti-Mastiff movement.

I have no plans to form some sort of idiodic boycott of Mastiff. It would be a waste of my time completely. I still plan to purchase La Pucelle despite these changes because there's absolutely nothing I can do about it.

Case in point: these edits will not affect sales numbers. It's a [poor] personal choice based on the ethics of that particular company to force those same ethics on the populace.
