Zune or Ipod?
ipod
What Greystone, erm CitizenB said.

Why would anybody even consider a music player that adds DRM to all of your content, even content you created yourself?

Google: zune + DRM

Kinda off topic...

For those with a Value City near them, they will have Ipods on sale later this week for $39.99 ! I am not sure on the size or model. They were shipped from the warehouse this week for the Thanksgiving ad.

I thought the DRM is only added when you wirelessly let someone "borrow" your songs.

It looks like you're right, but even so, that's enough for me. Imagine: you're a musician, you want to give your music to everybody you meet. you buy a zune because of the wireless sharing... you know what happens next.

And for creative commons works, this is against the license. That's right, microsoft violates the terms of the license. They're the "pirates" here.

Plus they give a portion of every sale to one of the music companies. Why? What for? There's absolutely no reason to do that. It's wrong on quite a few levels.

Look at the coverage on boingboing: http://www.google.com/search?q=zune&sitesearch=boingboing.net

Quit your bitching. OMG the sky is falling! Shit, it's a product that's been released for a week.

The music lasts for a few days or plays, yes. But the song/artist info will remain so you can look it up later on if you want to grab it yourself (or pay for it if that be the case). Or hell, just ask where the dude who sent it to you got it. *problem solved*

MS isn't the only one violating the creative common works so chillax. Welcome to the real world, where the trade of information follows the flow of money.

I am not "bitching".

What does it matter when it's been released?

The point is it's DRM-centric, so I'd never buy it, and neither should you. I'm not arguing the company shouldn't be allowed to release it; I'm just pointing out that only uninformed or stupid consumers would choose this particular product.

Welcome to the real world, where companies release products, and I stay away from those which are bad for me.

And "email somebody and get a link to a music file" is also a feature that works on the iPod, you know.

Oh yeah, it seems it doesn't even play (import?) all MP3 files - it has trouble with VBR ones.
And if you were familiar with microsoft's business practices, neither would you.
Dude, you're getting too deep with it bro. The product's good, and I got it at a very good price.... that's all I care about.

Also, I forgot to mention it's really cool if you have an Xbox 360 that you can watch all your little vidoes on it with the Zune because they both use the WMV format. Although the quality is on par with VHS, but not bad for blowing the picture up from a 3" screen.

Isn't the Zune just a Toshiba Gigabeat with the MS name on it? I'll just wait a few weeks for more impression of the zune before I purchase one, I'm more inclined to purchase a creative right now, but after problems with their soundcards, I don't know.

That's not all you should care about.

If a religious cult has a bake sale to fund further recruiting, it doesn't matter if the cupcakes are yummy. Your obligation to your fellow man takes (or should take) precedence over short-term personal considerations.

I'm not interested in any microsoft entertainment products; it's bad enough that I have to endure them professionally. If they became the only player in the console world, I'd just stop being interested in console games.

If someone is selling delicious cookies, it doesn't matter who sells them. If the product is good, you buy it. If wal-mart sells me a videogame for $10 less, then hell yes i'm going there. We in the United States look out for our fellow man... after ourselves are considered.

I'm glad you don't like Microsoft entertainment products. You'll just stick with their other divisions ie: windows? Smooth move buddy. Of all the things to bitch about you bitch about microsofts entertainment division, probably the only branch of microsoft their trying to be viable with and do well with.

If you MUST bitch at any companies entertainment branch you'ld best start with EA.

You're completely selfish. You don't care if your actions hurt others. You're not the only one - but don't assume everybody is like you.

I'm a software professional. My circumstances dictate that I use microsoft operating systems; I do my best to steer clear of microsoft-specific technologies, and for the most part succeed. I recommend macs for people who care about stability and security. Microsoft security holes are responsible for most of your spam, by the way.

At least this thread gave you the opportunity to use your favorite word, 'bitch', four times already.

Just get a gba player or OSX and use the compact you have lying around already.

Then I also suggest getting a PSP since you can use those big memory sticks and it is really compact already.

Back then we had big pockets. We had pockets big enough to fit two newly born babies inside. The original Gameboy could fit inside your pocket along with other toys if I remember correctly.

According to my facts we should still have cassete players all over town.
The point is it's DRM-centric
I think anyone who didn't realize that MS's dap would be DRM was fooling themselves.

Anyway. I would like a DAP.

At least 30gig.

I wish to put all my mp3s on there, as well was convert most of my cds to wav or mp3 and then over to the DAP.
-I'm hoping for a player where loading the mp3s/wavs is very simple; my songs are all in folders, I have never made a playlist in my life. I wish to simply put the song files on the DAP and then create play lists from there.

I don't care about the video features, I don't care about screen size or colors, so long as the menu is fairly simple to navigate.

I want a system which will not be a gamble where I could concievably lose all my music, as I'd like to xfer my CDs to the system and then get rid of them, as they take up too much darn space and weigh a ton.

I've been eyeing the ipod video 30/60gig (or whatever they are now) because they're the brand name and the Zen Vision M because I've heard good things about the simplicity of videos, but I don't care about videos so that arguement means nothing to me. The Cowan A2 sounds nifty, but will it meet my needs?

I appreciated the dapreview site, but it didn't tell me everything I needed to hear.

Most people don't even understand DRM. One of the Sony bigwigs said about the rootkit fiasco: "Most people, I think, don't even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care about it?" - same here, I think.

I second the cowon A2, it's quite the box of tricks. but if you're not interested in video... actually they have players that do very little in the way of video, you may want to check those (Cowon X5, I think).

Might as well as this here...any one know where I can get additional screen protectors for the Zen Vision: M like the one it came with? Or can I clean the one there and reapply it with no troubles?

The one on mine get peeled up once some how and dust, junk, and air bubbles are spreading beneath it with a vengeance =(.
I plan on buying the Zen Vision: W.
I was thinking about getting one of these... I'm not sure though. I'm thinking it might be worth it because I don't really plan on carrying it in my pocket; I plan on using it as sort of a mobile music / video hub (for my car and home stereo mainly).

You sound like you could use the cowon A2.

(Or maybe an Archos?)

whatever happened to big pocket jeans?

I mean seriously, I can barely fit my wallet in my jeans, much less ONE baby.

I miss the 90s...

Question: Any video I have ON my Zune, I can stream to my 360 right? With the 360 now offering movie/tv show downloads..can I stream that to the Zune and take it with me..or...no? :( Better yet, can I buy things on my 360 (again Shows/movies) and upload them into the Zune via USB?

I want this for Christmas..and if it's very Xbox 360 friendly, I'm going to be a very happy person

Yes, Microsoft's new Zune digital music player is just plain dreadful. I've spent a week setting this thing up and using it, and the overall experience is about as pleasant as having an airbag deploy in your face.

"Avoid," is my general message. The Zune is a square wheel, a product that's so absurd and so obviously immune to success that it evokes something akin to a sense of pity...

The Zune is a complete, humiliating failure. Toshiba's Gigabeat player, for example, is far more versatile, it has none of the Zune's limitations, and Amazon sells the 30-gig model for 40 bucks less.

Throw in the Zune's tail-wagging relationship with music publishers, and it almost becomes important that you encourage people not to buy one.

Getting away from an irrational fear about Microsoft...

I don't care about videos. I really just want a device I can put a bunch of music on (4 or 8GB is fine) for the car. I'd prefer something with radio, but I can get an ultra-small radio for cheap. This device should have a compact solution to play OTA to my radio. The device should also have a backlit screen to see at night. If there's a possibility, interactivity with a head unit that also does Sirius would be an extreme plus.

I was thinking Nano, or there's a Phillips at Sams right now for $170 (8GB).

I'm pretty sure you can find something that does that for a lot cheaper than a Nano would. Keep looking around before you commit.

I've decided to just get a Fusic phone during the summer when my contract expires and then I can have a few gigs of music on that without having to spend $200 something on another player.

My thing about the Ipod is that so far I have bought every ipod so far with the exception of the photo Ipod. And when my Ipod video died after 93 days Apple told me to pretty much go fuck myself and buy a new one. I'll never buy a Ipod again and if that means buying a Zune,Zen,hillary duff mp3 player then so be it.

So Zen Vision W, Zen Vision M, Zune, or Ipod. Gah. So many choices.

Vision W is so expensive and so sexy. I really like the idea of the IR remote control for it since about 70% of it's use would be in the car. Do any of the other MP3 players have remote control abilities? (Yes I could just hit the buttons but since i'd use it in personal and work vehicles i'd rather keep it in a nice case cradled nicely than fumble through buttons).

I have a Zen Vision: M, iPod Video, and soon a Zen Vision: W. Of the two I own, I have to go with the iPod. The Zen is excellent, but I still favor the click wheel.

In the year I've owned the iPod, I have never had any problems with it. I don't know why people think you have to use iTunes, there're plenty of other apps. Personally, I use GTKPod. It's lightweight, and much faster than iTunes for transferring music on and off. In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with iPods, it's just cool to hate/bash them.
