I figured there should be an official thread since there was one for the box.. then one for the source games.. anyways..

Okay. That was one of the coolest moments ever.

I was just messing around and I saw one of the guys far away. I pulled out my crossbow.. the fucking thing pinned him on the wall! I had to noclip up to him, but I got a few shots. I went into the wall to get a shot of the arrow.

...owned.

When I first looked at the shot, I thought you were suspending him in air with the grav gun. I think I'm gonna have to get this today. I can't take it anymore.

If you beat the game, you apparently get a "super gravity gun" (I'm a few levels off from the end).. the normal gravity gun doesn't pick people up.. but I've heard the "super gravity gun" does, as well as the buggy.. and even the combine ship. I know the gun exists because I've seen people post pictures of it.. I just haven't heard much about it or gotten to it yet.

Here's two more sadistic pictures for your enjoyment.

You are a horribly sadistic person. I like it...keep 'em coming.

Oh, and just FYI, Painkiller has a similar effect that is also pretty astounding. It's not just a bolt that's fired, but a big-ass wooden stake.

A post for your pinning pleasure of course.

That is cool, but (as mentioned above) not nearly as cool as the stake gun in painkiller...

HL2 is an awesome game so far, I wish I had more time to play it...

I'm trying to download HL2 through STEAM via my key, but the Product Registration Wizard says "Subscription Pending" because their servers can't process the transaction. I know they had problems the first two days, but I thought they were fixed. Anyone else having problems?

By the way, you won't find it used. It locks the CD Key to your Steam account. If you find it used, you might want to tell people that it's about as useful as a coaster.

Yea, i for some reason haven't been using the crossbow, but I have to say, this is an incredible game. It is a purely cinematic experience, but with no cinemas. As anyone can can you, the riverbed chapter, and the buggy chapter are incredible. Ravenholm was outright frightening, and saw blades are awesome.

Christmas came early tonite.

About a year ago, my best friend bought an ATI video card and recieved one of the "Free HL2" vouchers. When the game was released onto the Steam servers at midnight, he called me and asked if the key on his voucher could be used to get the game through Steam. I told him yes it could, and he ran off to download the game. As everyone knows, the Steam servers were getting, well, served at that time and he had quite a bit of trouble installing the game.

The next morning, he was fed up with trying to download and bought a copy at BB. When he got home, he made a new Steam account so he could do a fresh HL2 install with the discs. All was well and he began playing the game. I went over to his house to check it out (on his monster of a computer), and boy what a game. I saw the retail box sitting by his computer and asked, Why did you buy a copy? I thought you had the voucher? He told me of his troubles with Steam, and I forgave him for not being a cheap-ass and basically purchasing two copies of the game. At this point it occured to us: he actually has two copies of the game. He only needs one. Perhaps I could have the other.

We came back to my house and tried to register the ATI voucher onto my Steam account. Alas, we were told it was already registered, which made sense. Then, he remembered that he made a new account for his retail copy, and the ATI voucher key lay dormant in his other account. At that point, my friend grabbed my keyboard, logged out of my account, logged into his old one, and started the HL2 install on my comp. He then looked at me and said, Merry Christmas.

In a mere 149 minutes, I will be playing this awesome game. Thanks again Alex.

This game is amazing, and the atmosphere is the best.

I love watching the zombies burn. Just to hear them scream. What's the most unique part it's like the zombies are trying to scream things, but can't form the whole words. For example, at the end they go "Oh, God!" but it comes out "Uggg... GGGGaaaaaaaaggggg"

Ravenwood has more atmosphere than the entirety of Doom 3 and it's better than most horror games

I accidentally paused wile one was burning, and had that screaming noise playing for about 30 minutes straight. Ravenholm was damn freaky.

As somebody was asking about the Gravity Gun in super mode... I just got to that part, this crazy force field thing disintegrates all your weapons until it gets to the gravity gun. It zap it, but it doesn't desintigrate like the rest, it starts glowing and gets all Bad-A. Not only is the range increased but as others have mentioned, you can pick up ridiculously sized objects. Damn, I LOVE THIS GAME!!

What's even more awesome is that if you cheat and use it in earlier levels, you can pick up people and kill them with one shot. You can also pick up vehicles. I have a few shots of this if anyone's interested.

Ill have to pause it sometime when an enemy is burning.
Currently Im in Ravenholm and its really cool. Im really enjoying this game. Halo 2 has nothing on it so far.

oh man, i just got home from playing at my friend's house, and it is AWESOME!

damn those black-head-huggers-throwing-guy-of-death, those things are damned evil. i can't wait til he beats it so i can use the super gravity gun.

You have a cool friend

i JUST got the gravity gun (and DOG!)...about how far am i % wise? Im enjoying this way too much, and i hope im around %50
You have a cool friend
Damn right I do. I also just found out that for $10 plus tax, I can upgrade to the Steam Silver package and get myself some HL: Source and DoD: Source action.

Another quick note: does anyone know if you can change your username? I want to change the username on the account my friend gave me, but I can't figure out how. I've checked every FAQ I could find on the Steam website, and there is nothing that even details whether or not it's even possible to do so.

Not even 50%.

Not that I know of.

I love this game! Your screens are cool, but what are you running it on? It looks kinda bad.

What do you expect? I'm a cheap ass gamer :)

I'm running it on a 1.1ghz with 512mb ram and a GeForce FX 5200. I have most of the world textures turned down.

I don't think you can change the account name, just the password and email (I could be wrong though). Since you can change what your name is in-game for CS and stuff, hopefully not being able to change the name on the account isn't too bad for you. A friend of mine just took over another friend's Xbox Live account, and it sucks for him that he can't change the gamertag since that is what shows up

Have you guys tried running that little test in the CS:Source menu? It shows the average FPS. Just curious to see what you got.

I don't profess to be able to tell FPS, but I was able to get near 69 FPS with the test, though I have had some noticeable slowdown at certain points with my system. Not enough to be of consequence in gameplay though.
What's the best strategy against those black spider hoarder things? Those spiders are pretty deadly.
The shotgun is pretty good, or you can keep some distance and kill the spiders as they are thrown (the guy is very easy to kill once he is out of them, so just use the crowbar)

I'm running with 1.38ghz, 512MB and a friggin' Radeon 9000. Obviously not running at full spead but the game sets most of the settings around medium quality by default, so I'm satisfied. BTW any suggestions for a nice videocard that won't be overkill for my underpowered system? I mean I'm running a Radeon 9000 for god's sake.

In a related (and hilarious) note, Something Awful has a great front-page article detailing the "Asshole Physics" in HL2. I would bet that the first thing every person does when playing this game is pick something up and chuck it at passers-by. It's the funniest (and most masochistic) to do it to the Combine.

And Raekwon, my Radeon 9600 Pro 128 MB is handling the game like a champ. It can be had for $80 easily.

haha! so damned true, i tried so hard to block those access panels from people, but eventually they just sorta..walk through my barrels.

I spent a good 20 minutes just throwing shit at the Combine and then running my ass off so as not to get zapped. I especially enjoyed screwing with the asshole who tells you to pick up the can. I threw it right in his face and pictured Gordon saying, "Oops, I missed."

I'm running a Athlon xp 2100 and a Radeon 9700.

I'm running it at 800x600 with ansio and 2x AA. Mostly everything is on medium.

Occasioanally it stutters during high speed (for example on the hovercraft) but other than that it runs very well.

I still theink the Far Cry engine is a better engine. But this ranks up there as one of the best and is much better suited for the urban areas.
Are all the members of the Combine human?
I'm pretty sure, but the later ones don't all soud human when killed.

I just finished HL two and IT ROCKS!

The combine are definately not human. Not anymore. When Barney shows up in the beginning it makes you thiink they're all human collaborators. Then you get to see some of them in the Citedel without their armor on and once you dou you'll go, "Damn!"

Also, as you go, you'll see hints about their non-human nature. In one subway area there's grafitti on the wall that shows a monkey head, a human head, and a combine head in dissection. There's also a closeup of one on a monitor midway through the game during one of the sequences when Breen is talking.

HL2 has more atmosphere on one level than Doom 3 had for the entire game.

And the Super gravity Gun is cool. Hey Sneaky, you get to use it in the regular game if you've beaten it once, right?

I ffound it made the end easier. But I liked the easy ending somewhat because it gave you the opportunity to explore your creepy surroundings.

On another note, I thought the stuttering was abnormal but I thought it was my machine. It turns out the stuttering in the game is a glitch. Valve should have it fixed in a patch and it'll run much smoother, I read.

i also beat it a few hours ago. wow. great game. awesome last few levels. from the massive firefights in the streets to the really spooky but fun final two, it was a pretty awesome experience.

yeah, and i noticed the non-human thing too. creepy.

Question:

The Pics in the beginning kinda turned me off...

With this set up:
3.0 Ghz P4
1024 Ram
6600GT PCI Express Card

How well will I be able to run it? How much better will it look than those pics?

I beat it Thursday, and it was the best damn experience ever. I'm not sure about the gravity gun for the whole game, as I haven't gotten around to starting again. Perhaps tonight.

FYI, those pictures I took are from a place I had to noclip up to to get. I'm also running it on almost the lowest settings possible. Here's a few more shots I took. Don't let the looks turn you off to the game, I'm running it with nearly everything turned down.

One thing I must say that disappointed me about the game was its ending, on reflection. I won't give anything away but it seemed somewhat anticlimatic, and didn't explain anything. Especially the inconsitancies.

Mostly you have to put things together by yourself. Which was probably intentionally done. But there are so many questions, it would have been preferable if they answered a couple questions but made a couple more.

While I admit it was sudden, it left you hanging jsut as much as half Life 1 did. I must say though, the whole SPOILER

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER!

Slowed time effect with the explosion was awesome. I had no idea what it was until I realized that was a blossom of flame in slow motion. Rock

END SPOILER!

I so hope they don't take 6 years for HL3

But even at the end of HL: you knew some of the basics. Invasion from multidimensional world, teleportation, yada yada yada.

In HL2 there was a ton of more stuff. And No explanation at all. The only inference I can draw was...
*Spoiler*

That basically the earth was invaded by the Zen. Earth lost. But Breen convinced the Zen, now known as the "Combine" to give the survivors a chance of joining them. To do that, man has to be sugically altered so humans can survive in their universe and beyond.

That's why you see those creatures at the end. They're transformed humans out of their combine suits. No hands, no legs, just a torso with organs and a brainwashed mind. Breen, who has gone insane by dealing with the Zen, sees this as man's last chance. They can either choose annihillation or become "elevated" to one of the spacefarings races with the opportunity to visit countless worlds. But he seems ignore the part that what joins the Combine is no longer remotely human.

One thing I wish they explained it why some of the Zen help the humans now? Are the Zen even part of the combine? Or if City 17 is like some italian film I once saw. A city infested with zombies and when the protagonist tries to leaves and get's to the end of the tunnel, there's just a cliff face with nothing left.

I also wish they had a more definate ending. There was definately room for one more level where you have to escape from the citadel as it's coming apart around you. Soomething a-la the crashing star destroyer in Jedi Knight. It would have been much less anti-climatic. Half way through you would get split off from the escapees. Then, you get to the end where there seems too be no way out, and the mysterious Man in Black shows up (In a combine transport no less) and offers you to stay behind and die or get on the shuttle.

Then, as the city falls apart in the distance, he explains a few things. Noot the whole enchilada. Just a couple tidbits. Then you get put back into statis.
