Blockbuster 3 for $24.99 or 5 for $39.99 new retail dvd/blu <= $19.99

hawaiiboy

CAGiversary!
blockbuster just changed the sale so that any title $19.99 or below qualifies for the 3 for $24.99 or 5 for $39.99 deal BUT the really slimy part of it is we have pulled all the new movies that are $19.99 i.e. conan, captain america, bad teacher etc. and have been told to take them off the sales floor so they cannot be used in the deal.

yup, I was just at my local BB and they did that. my buddy that works there confirmed it. REALLY slimy. I don't mind if you advertise a sale with certain titles only included but when you promote a sale saying "All our $19.99 or below titles qualify" and then pull all the new releases. then that's just sleazy

Thanks Hawaiiboy. I'll have to check this out even though new releases were taken out. One of the movies I really want is "A Nightmare Before Christmas" but the BBV employee said that it was indeed $39.99. :whistle2:O

Can we request these movies and have them handed over?

Also is there a list of movies you guys had to put out of sight?

i'll take a trip there tomorrow see whats up... im sure i'll leave empty handed... unless i find some stuff i REALLY need. amazon took most of my money this black friday.

lol, no of course not, that the WHOLE POINT. They DON'T want to sell the newer stuff at those prices. just make the ILLUSION that they are doing a great sale. those titles are held back because they don't want them to sell for less than $19.99

In terms of consumer's rights/whatnot, is this even legal? It would be one thing to temporarily raise the price of something so that it is not included in the sale, bit to actually withhold said product when you have it in stock is something entirely different. And then for example to ask if you could buy said product and essentially be lied to that they don't have it, hmmm? Shady

Stopped by my BBV - the new BD section in the front of the store was completely stripped clean - NOTHING on display. Crazy.

Got back from Blockbuster a little while ago. Pretty decent selection. I picked up:

The Expendables (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)
Casino Royale (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Inglourious Basterds (Two-Disc Special Edition; w/ slipcover)
Taken (Two-Disc Extended Cut)
Salt (Deluxe Unrated Edition)

Also, I grabbed a NOS energy drink but the cashier forgot to ring it up and just gave it to me.

Not bad for $42 and some change.

Yep. The only situation that would warrant any kind of (still legal) complaints would be a situation where they didn't pull a hiding Capt. America from the shelf and you found it, brought it to register, and they say "oh, sorry, that wasn't supposed to be there, you can't buy that."

Other than that, they can choose what's available to put on the shelves whenever and for however much they want. Nothing illegal about it in the slightest sense. I don't even consider the practice of pulling the new releases shady at all. They probably realized that they timed the sale wrong and it should have happened before those new releases got put out for sale.

When exactly are they supposed to time it, last I checked there is ALWAYS going to be new releases. In my book it is shady, legal or not. They should have simply put an asterisk on the deal stating new releases are not included in the sale. That woud have put all this to rest, instead they pull a stunt like this.

exactly there would ALWAYS be a new release. basically they wanted to promote their sale and didn't want to include certain titles yet STILL claim all their $19.99 or below titles were included. it's sleazy marketing. not illegal. but still very sleazy

It's one thing to not put something out when you first get it like say Smurfs for example just released happened to be $19.99, but to take something off the shelf when it has already been available is totally different in my opinion.

The sleaze meter just went up quite a bit in my book now that I realize these are brand new copies. I thought it was the usual BBV used sale fare. Great deal for those who still have a BBV in their state.

An exclusion list would have been the best way for them to go about this if it was only for 2-3 titles, but it would have been almost impossible to say "excludes really new releases" since there's no concrete date on movies. Best scenario? Nothing, really. They can't even move the secretly-excluded movies to a special "full-price" display since the sale seems to say "all movies

I love how entitled a lot of you think you are. Just enjoy a decent sale and wait for those new releases to drop in price later. It's always ok for the consumer to abuse the system with your B2G1 return scams but the minute a store pulls something like this everyone's up in arms...

Hey HB,
What other $19.99 titles were pulled please?
You note three titles...curious what the other titles are.
I have 2 $12.99 blus to buy but need one more to round it out...

I'm more interested in a list of titles that ARE > $12.99 and < or = $19.99 AND also available for purchase. (I've scoured the $12.99 and under titles already).

There are 3 or 4 posts total in this thread that are actually informative (counting Hawaiiboy's). I'm not pointing fingers. My posts aren't helpful either.

I'm more interested in what people are buying rather than BBV's shady business practices.

This really IS bullshit....my uncle works at Blockbuster so I'm asking him what the deal is at our local store- there are a couple newer movies that I want to buy. After they've pulled all the newer blu-rays what's left of the $19.99 ones? The first Iron Man that is highly overpriced at $19.99? You call that a deal?

When it becomes $8.33 (3 for $24.99), yeah I would consider that a decent deal.

Well...I went to my Blockbuster today and I bought these 3 new blu-rays for $24.99 (all were listed as being $19.99):
Due Date
Black Swan
Saw: The Final Chapter

I was originally going there to see if they had some newer movies like Thor, Captain America and Green Lantern at $19.99 on blu-ray.....they DID have Captain America, but it was $27.99. Other newer movies I saw at $27.99 were: Fast Five, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Bridesmaids, Water For Elephants, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, The Change-Up and Zookeeper. The only newer movie on blu-ray I DID see that was $19.99 was Trespass.

I didn't even see most of those movies you listed....and there weren't that many movies marked $19.99. Most were under that price, but this is just my local Blockbuster. Curious to see what other people find :)

While I totally agree with you on the B2G1 return scams I find Blockbusters stores pulling titles absolutely shitty of them to do.

are these dvd and blu, or just one or the other?

I may be in the minority, but I can't complain. Most of us have benefited from the 5 for $20 blu sales, BOGO video game sales, and the current promotion. I think a lot of CAG may be spoiled by the Blockbuster deals. I guess by pulling some of the $19.99 titles may seem shady, but I don't blame them for not taking huge losses on new release blu's. I don't rent from them and I don't buy any of their used stuff, unless its a killer deal. If their intention is to bring more customers in by offering these deals in order to get more people to rent from them, it's probably not working with the majority of people on CAG, when Netflix and Red Box are far cheaper alternatives. I'm just thankful that they're still open, when so many other B&M rental chains are now closed.

Jesus Christ at the list of pulled movies. That is shady.

Here's what I got (not a great deal but whatever I'm ok with it):

All new Blus:

Step Brothers
Toy Story 2
The Matrix (10th Ann. Book Edition)
Knight and Day
Zombieland

Now as for new titles available, they did have some better deals than those but I already own them all. Ones I saw that would have been decent buys:
Gladiator
The Notebook (LE Gift set)
Star Trek (3 Disc Special Edition)

Other new Blus they had:
Mamma Mia
The Expendables
Twilight Series
Saw The Final Chapter
Fight Club
Valentine's Day
Premonition
Transformers Revenge Of The Fallen
More obviously but cant think of them at the moment

Thanks HB!
Whew that's a bunch, and although I had yet to read your list. I saw some of these while trying to scrounge 5 games today.

I see at least three, so hopefully I will be able to get one to round out my three.

thanks again for typing that long list :applause:

Stuff like Captain America and Bad Teacher are out on the floor but they ring up for over $19.99. Are you saying if I bought them with the 5 I would get them for $40?

Not likely, that store seems to have altered the price in their system over $19.99.

I stopped by my BB just now and couldn't even find one single movie to buy. I've picked up everything I want for now.

so today we got a memo to put all movies that we pulled off the sales floor back on the sales floor and they sent us these little labels we put over the upc stating not part of any bundle deal and signs to put up stating certain titles cannot be used in the bundle.

Anyone know if Blockbuster accepts manufacturers coupons? Coupons.com has $3 off coupon for Knight and Day. I picked this up for $7.99 at Target on Black Friday and was thinking of returning there to see if they can apply the coupon towards that purchase. If they won't do it, I can always return that one to Target and buy it at Blockbuster if they accept coupons.

I was so stoked when I saw the band of brothers tin on there, but the lady informed me that the deal was only for Blu rays 19.99 or less.

With the blockbuster one-at-a-time pass you get a free $10 gift card with the bundle.

Here's my haul, all Blu's

Ghostbusters
Fight Club 10th Anniversary Ed.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The Matrix Blu Ray Book
Natural Born Killers Uncut/Director's Cut

39.99 with a $10 gift card = $30 and some change. Don't have the prices in front of me but I believe I saved about $40 total.

I'll add some more of them that I saw but passed on -

Inception
Dark Knight
Inglourious Basterds 2-Disc special edition
Kill Bill Vol 1 and Vol 2
Knocked Up
The Bourne Triliogy (DVD)
Rocknrolla
Napoleon Dynamite
Salt
