We all have that special console/handheld that we like to shop for more than any other, and then there are ones we get simply from a need to have them all lol I was just wondering what some of your favorites/least favorites are. For me, I like the Gamecube best. There are just so many great games, and the small discs don't scratch easy, making it less likely to buy a dud. I don't personally care for buying N64 games (hence my small collection), mainly because outside of thrift shops prices are SO high, and getting CIB copies is getting increasingly rare:(

So what about you?

Hmmm, Gc is probably tied with ps2 for me (hear me out before your like PS2???).
Like you said before with the gc, all that's true, also wavebird's ftw.
But PS2 I love the fact that theres just SO MANY games for it, even alot of GS's still carry them, for now, and they mass produced so many, that even the amazing/valuble games aren't an arm and a leg (besides .hack part 4...) so I can get tons of Quality, CIB, cheap games for it. Where I would need like $50+ for Skies of Arcadia on the GCN, I can get like 5+ PS2 games of arguably similar quality.
Plus B/C is nice too.
Did you know theres in inuyasha rpg on the ps2! It looked fun, so I bought two for $4 ea, I can't do that with GC sadly.
So to recap I LOVE GCN, but it's high prices on it's must have games make the PS2 very appealing.

PS2 would probably be second for me actually. You really can find just about any game you want for less than $20 (most less than $5). It's just a risk if they actually work, as it seems more people used their discs as coasters instead of actually playing them:hot:Gamecube games are definitely going up in price, I've just been lucky and have found many for cheap. PS2 is probably the easiest to collect for though, which is also fun if only because you don't have to feel down for never finding that game you wanted. There are hundreds to buy;)

Though I sold off my collection years ago, I'd say from a collectors stand-point, I would think the Genesis / Mega Drive. Not only are they the more durable cartridge format, but many of the older titles have the solid plastic cases (if purchased CIB of course) which will stand the test of time (as long as you have the space for them, and don't mind the various box art color changes).

It also doesn't hurt that the games can be bought for much cheaper than the more popular SNES titles. The Genny doesn't get near as much love as it should, so its a way to differentiate your stash from the majority.

For OCD completionist collectors, the PS2 would be annoying due to the insanely large library, though I guess not near as bad as the rarest 2600 titles.

I'm tied between the 360 and the PS2.

The PS2 has the majority of my favorite RPGs, and it just has a fantastic library overall. There are tons of interested games on it.

The 360 also has a ton of interesting games, but it also has a crap load of steelbooks, which I am quite into.

I have 183 ps2 games and 192 360, but I think the ps2 wins overall. They're both quite a lot of fun collect for, though.

I enjoy collecting for the general sake of finding items I want... not sure I have a favorite. I guess the PS1 is was the first system I collected for so if i had to pick one, I'd say that.

this is a good question.

Although I used to do the PS1/PS2 collecting thing (sooooo many great games that you can play on one system!), my heart belongs to genesis. it is the first system i actually owned and the memories attached to that are priceless. back when renting games at a store was a reality! there are alot of fantastic titles to be had. i guess some of my all time favorite games (aside from SOTN) are tied to that system as well. across all genres, there are really classic games. kid chameleon, decap attack, shining force, gaires and hellfire... really good stuff.

the problem i have nowadays is finding these games CIB. i am such a nerd about that with older games, with the manuals having neat drawings and stories in them that expanded the premise of the game. that just kind of adds to the fun of looking for them though i guess.

and as much as i hate to say it, 360 really has a hold on my collec...er backcatalog at the moment. need. more. time.

I remember those days. Renting Mega Man II from the local family video and getting my unprepared ass kicked lol. We all need more time. We just need clones of ourselves that all share one combined consciousness. That would be perfect. :3

Ive said this before in another thread, but N64. It must be nostalgia. Shoot, half the fun is in the hunt though, always looking for something and if I find it, I'll shoot for something else. Currently out for that black Turok catridge complete in the box.

I've always been a fan of the Sega Genesis. Just enjoyable to find new games I never knew about before for that system.

I want to get back into collecting Gamecube, because I foolishly sold off/traded in most of my GCN collection several years back, and it seems GCN games are now becoming harder to find (at least for me).

This summer I'm gonna try some serious garage saling (thrifting has yielded nothing for me), and GCN is what I'm gonna be looking out for mostly, among other things.

I no longer focus on one particular console or handheld. Anything from NES to current generation that I deem quality is something I would collect or play.

Anything before NES generation I don't touch. Not a fan of before my times. Even people as old as me or older seem to hate that gen as well. Not too many atari and those other niche collectors out there.

SO MUCH THIS. I grew up with Genesis, I love the plastic cases, and the games are cheap and plentiful. Of course out in the yard sale / thrift shop setting I will buy most any games if the price is right, but finding a new CIB Genesis game I didn't have yet is always a thrill.

I'd say SNES and PSone. Those were probably the most influential times for me as far as gaming goes. I like getting that quick sweep of memories every time I glance at those shelves.

This is me as well. I sold off most of my favorites to buy a Wii way back when, with my rationalization being that I'd simply play the Wii versions of Mario Kart, Paper Mario etc. While I love those games, I really want to go back to the ones that got me started on the series, and finish up my collection.

I wouldn't say I focus on any ONE console or handheld, but I just have a softspot for the gamecube. I've never really been into cartridges, probably because I grew up with a PS2, but I would one day like to buy a NES. Hopefully by that time the good games will be more affordable:)

I miss games that came with real manuals. The pieces of paper nowadays don't hold a candle to the epic multilingual novels of yor. I'm always thrilled when I find a CIB copy, even if it's a common game. I don't know how people lost them so easily, it's like they used them as bathroom reading material:hot:
DREAMCAST!!!! And N64.. And SNES
I've never own a Dreamcast, though I kinda want one simply because they're rather rare it seems. The worst part though, is apparently at a store I frequent, they have a free box outside and someone had dumped a Dreamcast in there! My mom didn't get it though, and in the few minutes it took me to run over, someone else had taken it:cry:

Probably NES for me, but I do love the box styles for so many of those old Sega Master System and Genesis cases!

DS/3DS for me :D

I love buying game for those systems I love the cartridges and love the boxes.

I don't one yet but I think I'd be really into getting sega saturn games though.

I mostly like nintendo games. Marios, zeldas, metroid, etc.
But my favorite to collect is gamecube, followed by snes, and nintendo 64.
Gamecube just has so many good games imo.

Ive been lucky to accumulate the entire zelda series (minus the gameboy games) pretty much free through yardsailing and CL.

I don't think the systems are rare, but I definitely see less and less dreamcast games int he wild

Dreamcast is fairly common, I see them fairly frequently. Don't see that many games but they are out there. A lot more common than Saturn games or 3do/turbografx/jaguar/etc. I probably see a few games for it a few times a month. Unfortunately they are usually sports games but not always.

Anyway, Dreamcast is my favorite as well but DS/PSP/SNES/Turbografx/PS1/Xbox 1 are all pretty close.

What type of ship do you use in your yardsailing?

Darn, wish I'd picked up some of the $1 games I saw recently. I didn't know they were actually semi hard to find

for me it would be all nintendo and 360 games. ill buy just about anything if the price is right. city wide sales start up next month and go all summer so im hopeing to find some good deals.

I started (serious collecting) only about two years ago so unfortunately all of my games and systems pre-360 were sold or given away.

The collector in me loves finding TG16 stuff in the wild (this and the SNES were the two most influential systems for me as a gamer and still shape my tastes today).

While those two systems have the most nostalgic value, I think the PS2 has been the most rewarding since I never played any ps2 games until this gen. I only had a OGbox last gen. My love for JRPGs has been more than satiated with finding SMT games. Now if I can only find Rule of Rose....

Here's a question for the serious collectors out there: how many of you make your own cases/artwork for cartridge games? I like to display my stuff and cart only just looks ugly, but then I think about the $ spent on making it look good could go towards more games.... but then again, I know I buy games that may not see the inside of a system for 12 months or more.

Oh and one final comment. My wife likes my steam collection the most. :)

I actually enjoy collecting systems more than games. One day I hope to have one model of every Nintendo handheld.

Why? Because Nintendo Handhelds are what kept my life together as a child. Whether it was A Game Boy, Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Advanced, SP, Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite, DSi, or 3DS, I have owned about 75% of all of the handhelds they have put out (not all at once though.) I never had a GB Micro, GB Light, Nintendo DSi XL, 3DS XL or GBC.

All that remains now is a 3DS, Gameboy Pocket, and Gameboy Advanced. *sigh* childhood.

Well, I've had several systems and played several others, but the system(s) I enjoy collecting for most is probably my Playstations. My PS3 collection grows and grows every time I look at it. My PS2 games (all 40 or 50 of them) will never be for sale, and my PS1 games are timeless classics that will always bring a smile to my face. I enjoy collecting for my Xbox 360 and Wii, but my PS's are #1.

I still have my Game Boy Pocket and Advance. The pocket is still fully functional, too. Had it since I was 8 years old and I turned 22 three days ago.

PS1 and PS2. Those are the two I'm always on the lookout for when hitting swap meets, and thrift stores. Like many said, there are so many different games for it. I'll also look out for other game systems too, but these are my two favorites.

I would have to say Gamecube. I'm not sure if it's just because this was the first system that I was able to wait and buy myself on launch day, or what. I love the games on the system, I love my lonely Wavebird, and I like the fact that the prices keep going up lol. Makes me think my collection is going to be worth a ton someday.

TG16 first because it's the first real console I ever owned (after the commodore vic 20) and depite only owning 45 or so CIB HuCards, I've been collecting for it for almost 24 years. It's also the collection I'm the most proud of and the retro console I still play the most (I have a dedicated TG16 station in my game room).

Second favorite would be the N64 for the nostalgia and the amazing AAA classics. It's also one of my slower growing libraries mostly due to the price of the CIBs I'm still after.

That's basically the same issue with Game Boy/GBC games (Advance isn't as bad) but I'm almost done with getting the games I want for those two. My NES and SNES collecting has basically stopped because of CIB prices, and I won't even bother adding N64.

Ya, my GB/GBC stuff is in the same boat. With a couple exceptions, all the CIB games I have left to get are pricey and climbing. A few games are reletively cheap but almost impossible to find CIB in good shape.

I'm thinking of starting a cart only SNES collection. I realize I'm super late to the party and couldn't pick a worse time to start one but I only want 8 or so titles that I don't already have on the GBA. I'm worried if I wait too much longer I'll be completely priced out of ever getting them - even cart only.

Seems like a really good time to pick up Genesis games (and Wii games too but I digress...). I think a lot of the better Genesis titles are under valued right now and we'll see a noticable rise in value over the next couple years as people start finnishing up their SNES collections. There are a few titles I've been checking for on ebay, rare enough that a CIB copy will only show up once every couple of weeks that sell for a tenth of what some SNES games go for that have multiple daily listings.

One good thing about an N64 library is you don't need that many titles to have a decent collection. I have about 20 and consider myself to be roughly half way to having the definitive N64 library.

I might end up doing that myself: just get CIB copies of my most wanted games on the NES/SNES/N64 and then get cart only for some of the others. At least you have a sizable collection from those systems (fucking Mega Man V on the GB! Arg, too expensive!). I started fairly recently and being young/not having disposable income really sucks since prices have climb so much over the last decade.

Isn't it time you posted your collection again?;)

I still can't believe I have that and how cheap it was - I only just got around to finding a protective plastic cover for it. It's definately my most valuable item (although a sealed non-vga Megaman IV sold for $800 a couple weeks ago!?!)...Having it is good incentive to finnish the collection - last week I added a nice first print copy of Super Mario Land but that was my first GB game I've bought in over a year.

Maybe I'll post pics tonight...I ran out of room again and was going to wait to post pics until I added new shelving and picked up the new Bioshock and Injustice Super CEs but now it looks like I might be moving cities soon (I've been interviewing with the same company for my dream job for about two years - I just went to interview number 6 and it looks like it finally might happen) so it may be a while before I have everything out and visible again...

Yeah, the sealed Mega Man IV is definitely worth more.

My fingers are crossed for you on your dream job. I'm going to start (hopefully) my first entry level job in Oct and will also be moving... that's gonna be a huge change/risk for me (new city, living by myself, no friends or family, no guarantee if the job will even be there), but hopefully gives me more money to buy stuff.

Thanks man - it's pretty stressful thinking about moving and especially leaving a good job I've been climbing for almost a decade to move my trusting wife and kid to a new city and all kinds of unknown. I've been rooted in this city for 20 years. Ultimately, I think it's good to embrace change every once in a while even just for the sake of change itself. Mostly it's the chance at earning more money and a fun work culture thats driving me but I'm lucky in that I'll have friends in the new city. Scary and exciting!

Good luck to you as well:D and here's to adventure!

I'm not liking the idea of boxing the game room up not to mention there's no way in hell I'm going to let a moving company even get near my stuff...this is probably going to require renting a cube van and making an extra 10hr round road trip:cry:

I collect just about everything, but I like collecting for NES and (for some strange reason) Gamecube the most. Most NES games are cheap and easy to find (minus Flintstones, Little Samson, etc) but it's also the first console I've ever played and I still have most of the games I grew up with. Gamecube was huge in my neighborhood when I was a teen and severely underrated in my opinion. Had a lot of good times with that system.

NES! It was my first system and I'll buy anything for the NES no matter how crappy. Those games are just fun for me, even the ones that are terrible usually have some comedic value.

(Moses can blow himself up in Exodus! When I found that out I couldn't stop laughing!)

Exactly this. SNES and N64 I will also buy any games I see if I don't have them, but I don't seek them out as much. Other systems I tend to be a lot pickier about the games I buy and only buy games I want though still end up with my share of crap games from buying lots.
