2023 Thrift Store AND Yard Sale Pickups Thread

Alas, my thrift-fu has become terribly weak. While I was out for my birthday today, I bought a handful of games for older systems... the 3DS, PSP, and Game Boy Advance. One of the 3DS games doesn't work at all because it's from another region, and the other is a match three puzzle game based on the Wizard of Oz, because sure, that totally makes sense. The GBA game was a Hot Wheels collection which somehow doesn't include the impressive Stunt Challenge, and the best PSP game I managed to nab was Field Commander. Thanks to the pandemic, even the formerly overlooked PSP is no longer a sanctuary for cheap ass collectors!

The movies I took home were better. The first season of Due South, the third and fifth seasons of Babylon 5, the short-lived He-Man cartoon from 2002, and some Fraggle Rock collection, since I don't remember the show all that well but did enjoy what little of it that I can recall.

Apparently Goodwill opened back up on the 31st so Ive been 3 times since I found out from a random Facebook post! Still a little meh about the new layout of the store. They only have one glass case on the wall by the registers now (there was just purses and some Nikes in there), no cases in the center in front of the registers anymore. They moved all the shoes up front by the clothes and all the clothes racks are now front to back instead of horizontal. They took out all the old wares shelves and put in these 3 tiered metal bar shelves that kind of allow you to see everything. It ruins the fun of walking down an aisle and finding nothing then going down the next aisle and seeing something cool! And they took away the media wall and just kind of tossed DVDs, CDs, VHSs, games at the end of the book section. Hopefully thats just a work in progress and not a media is an after thought thing now.

The prices havent been too bad from what Ive seen. The only things I kind of laughed at were 2 OG Xbox controllers for $7.37 apiece, a Disney Infinity set for $15, and a "Making Of Star Wars" VHS for $6.

Wii guitar $3.67, shirt was $9 (kinda over paid for that), Hokas were $11.05, 400-in-1 Handheld was $3, the Skylanders stuff was $3.67, the Kodak Retina IIc was $3, the UHD player was $9 (needs a fuse), and the Star Wars figures were $3.67 apiece

Goodwill, $56- 4 pairs of Nikes, Monster Jam mini helmet, and a Sony Cybershot 14.1 MP camera. Small Thrift, $1 apiece. All are complete.

Both pics totaled about $177. Pic 1- Open box but never used Guitar Hero Warriors Of Rock Bundle, a 2nd guitar, 2 sealed guides, Dave And Busters baseball, sealed 1980 Rubiks Cube, Supreme Commanders Xbox 360, complete in box Side Winder Precision 2 joystick, and the 1991 Mattel Winky Says game.Pic 2- 103 sealed bottles of Guy Tang hair color. 1970s Fisher Price record player. Magnavox DV220MW9 dvd/vcr combo. And before anyone asks, the hair color was 89 cents a box. They retail for $10 apiece. Ill probably sell them in a lot and see what kind of offers I get, theres potentially 1k in value there fyi. Dont sleep on stuff like that if youre thrifting or yard sale'n! Look up Recently Sold on Ebay if youre curious about something you arent too familiar with!

And a little Saturday follow up- Not as much as last post but not bad. Goodwill- $6 for the Samsung UBD-K8500 UHD player, $1.32 for Pikachu, and $7.37 for the sealed Xbox360 Rock Candy controller. Small thrift- $10 for the Guitar hero bundle, I think it's missing the wireless adapter. Oh well, the record player they gave me last week works so it's all good. Dont glaze over the electronics sections at GW! UHD players have decent resell.

Goodwill- sealed Aladdin doll was $3.67, the Pokémon box had some dice and about 30 newer cards inside for $5, "Jimmy's Pogs" wete $4. There is some sealed pog packs on the bottom which is cool. Goodwill- Blues jersey was about $9, the sealed RC battery was $3.67, the Onimusha guide was $2.24. The HP wireless NFC adapter was $1 at a small thrift, its unused. The Xbox 360 and 16GB USB stick was free, another thrift was getting ready to toss it!

Anyone else can jump in its okay! Goodwill- Wii Fit Plus complete in box was $3.67, Magnavox dvd/vcr combo was $12, Nikes were $20.91, and the Sony dvd Handycam stuff was $20. Paid more than I'd like to give GW for some things but there's still room for profit. GW- Bose pc speakers were $6.76. Small thrift, $37- Harley shirts, mini VHS Sony Handycam set, Strait Line measuring tools, some Smarter Imagine speakers, a sealed pair of Harken Sailing Gloves, and 3 sealed Therma Cell Mosquito Repellent Refills. Nothing yet! Just get everything cleaned, tested, and sorted yesterday, now comes the fun part of finding out what to do with the stuff that's not going into the collection!
keep me posted I might be interested in a black controller and a few of the games

Had to drop my car off at NTB to get new tires so I walked over to Goodwill. Most of this came from Goodwill. THEY KEPT BRINGING OUT GOODNESS! Harley Davidson glasses came from small thrift store. Spent about $104 for everything. Sealed figures and puzzles. Mall Madness is missing the mall walls and some pegs. The Micro Machines Aliens figures as a bundle last sold for $110 on Ebay! That is a 1993 Chuckie doll. Bunch of little 90s Kenner NFL figures and 5 big talking Quarterback figures.

Everyone here picks up some amazing stuff.  I do wonder sometimes where you guys put all these things.

I've become so picky about what I buy now -- mostly just because I don't want it taking up so much space.

This was a pretty good recent find; a Thermaltake "smart" power supply that generates 750 watts of power, still in shrink wrap, for $25. I talked to the folks who were selling it and they let me haggle the price down to twenty bucks. It immediately went into my project PC, replacing a Power King which seemed to work but had too many legacy connectors and felt like it came out of the bottom of a cereal box.

So, now I need an Intel CPU from the 8th or 9th generation, some DDR4 RAM, and an SSD card and I guess I'll be off to the races.

4 differnet stores, about $30. Sealed puzzles, sealed Tsuro game, Wii guitar, Call Of Duty MW Trilogy, sealed Ellcia dvd, brand new ? Block luggage tag, Minecraft torch light, 2 nunchuks, Gamecube port cover for a Wii, PS2 controller, Xbox 360 Rockcandy controller, Wii ac adapter, and 2 PS composite cables.

Made a trip to Animal Humane Thrift last week and got a wireless PS3 Rock Band guitar (no dongle) for $10. Now I just need to get the dongle for it.  Seems to be in really good shape and hopefully it works.

Goodwill, $40 apiece- brand new NuWave Pro Plus Infrared Ovens. Goodwill, about $10- hockey sticks. Goodwill, $134- sealed Up Words game and a bunch of brand new 007 Bond Girl perfume and Unscripted II cologne. Probably $1k worth. Goodwill, maybe $40. Dropmix is brand new I think, seals look untouched. The Jazz guy is missing a saxophone apparently. There was 5 sealed tapes in the JVC box. Atari Flashback 7 is complete. And the Tp-Link ac1200 mesh setup works just fine. Goodwill, $4- pair of Le Creuset salt and pepper shakers in the box. Mom wanted those! Small Thrift, $45- Wii bundle, vintage Coco Puffs cereal bowl, Nikes, Atari handheld, and some composite cables. Just Dance 4 and Hip Hop Dance are sealed. Goodwill, about $20- 2001 Buzz, 2002 TMNT vehicle, and a Toshiba dvd/vcr combo.

Not much this year so far thrifting so far. I got to some really good estate sales late and didn't want to wait in line for an hour to get into the houses (curse wanting to enjoy my days off! lol). But here are the highlights:

A lot of Wii stuff:

Wii console with two wiimotes with Wiimotion plus built in, and the adapter for $33

2x copies of Super Mario Galaxy in one case for $4

Wii Sports Resort, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and a shaun White game in the shaun white case for $4

Mario Kart Wii for $10

XBox one controller (missing back) for $6

Red Dead Redemption GotY edition $4

This thing that I don't know what it is but looked cool for $2:

ocFb8Lg.jpg

Bag of newer Ghostbusters figures for $7

Harry Potter years 1-8 on Blu-ray sealed for $2 (already took to the local used media store since I was going there anyhow that day)

Mash the complete series on DVD: for $35 (been wanting this for a long long time ever since I passed up buying the individual sets at a yard sale for $11 years ago)

Star Trek the original series sealed on DVD for $30- not a deal but they are going to look amazing on the shelf

CEjZFAH.jpg

and I got a free recliner from a neighbor that has barely been used

Today I found an Xbox One Razer Atrox Arcade Fighting Stick for $26. Just tested it on my Series X and it works perfectly. This is actually my first arcade fighting stick for any Xbox consoles. All my arcade fighting sticks (4 total) I have purchased are for the Sony PlayStation consoles (PS3, PS4).

I got out to a couple of flea markets yesterday without expecting much (most markets in my area have games set at eBay prices or higher), but I was pleasantly surprised to actually find some deals. I got Lethal Weapon and Alfred the Chicken for $15 all together and have confirmed that they work, despite the damage. The funny thing about that sale is that the seller touted the nearby copies of Tetris as the real treasures, and I didn't feel the need to disabuse him of the notion. The Berenstain Bears game was $3 and is a gift for my son, since that book is a favorite of his right now. The vinyl Casper toys were $5 for all three, and they're going to be raffle prizes at my cult movie night.

Finds 10-22-22

The last yard sale weekend from last year.  Only a week or so away from the season kicking off in the Midwest, can't wait!

This is from the weekend of a large, covered bridge festival.  Tons of sales but had to travel to the other side of the state and didn't get there until around noon.

[attachment=37856:IMG_0520.JPG]

Vintage car magazines from 1978 and 1980, $2 each.

[attachment=37857:IMG_0519.JPG]

This was from a barn sale, lady was trying to move what was left as it was near the end of the sale.  Ended up getting everything in the pic for $6.

[attachment=37858:IMG_0521.JPG]

Got these for $4.  Not good artists but I was going to polish them up and build a backlit frame with a diffuser in the back for a display behind my old record player.

[attachment=37861:IMG_0524.JPG]

What is arguably my best finds of the year.  Hero Quest goes for over $120, and Fireball Island goes for over $400 (if in mint condition).  Got them for $0.50 each.  This is my second copy of Hero Quest found at a garage sale.  As you can see the Fireball Island box is in bad shape, but the popped plastic board and all parts are excellent.  It's only missing one hexagonal piece that holds one of the marbles that I can get online.  I knew The Hero Quest was a good pickup, but I didn't know Fireball Island was that coveted, I almost passed on it.  There were a few other board games sitting along with these that I didn't get, now I wonder what they were.  My dad picked up a G.I. Joe Night Raven without any parts for free.

Damn good week at the thrifts! Pic 1- Small Thrift- sealed puzzles, $2 apiece. Pic 2- Goodwill- sealed Seinfeld Trivia was $6.97, sealed Shopkins game was $4.97, video games and dvd were like $1.16 apiece because they made it to 75% off day. Mickey bank was $3.67. The 3D crystal puzzle figures were in an Easter bucket for $4.67. Pic 3- Goodwill- sealed filters were $4.67 apiece, dance pad was $1.16 because it survived until 75% off day, keyboard was $12, Nikes were $15, Easter buckets the 3D puzzles were in. Pic 4- Small Thrift- vintage Avon aftershave bottles were $5 apiece, they are either completely full or almost full. Goodwill- video games were $4.67 apiece, balloon electronic inflator pump was $8, the Bose Cinemate Series II was $50 (resell is $200+), Sony CMT-EX1 cd radio was $30 (resell is all over the place but hovers around $240-$300!) Pic 5- Small Thrift- Gamester headset and dongle and 2 Sony Walkmans were free! I went on vacation in the Shenandoah Valley last week and managed to find a few games at a local flea market for $8 total. Unfortunately a woman who usually sets up with games wasn't there due to the cold, but these were still good finds for me and are going into the collection. I don't know that I'll ever play Rise of Legends, but it was only $2 so I picked it up for the Big Huge Games nostalgia. They were a local studio here in Baltimore that a bunch of my friends used to work for...until Curt Schilling acquired the studio and promptly wrecked it. I actually went to the liquidation sale for the studio with a friend who used to work there - it was a a very surreal experience.

I always thought those Sony open face CD players were really cool, first time I've seen the clear face; usually see the solid face design.

I have a huge PS2 collection, and I don't believe I've ever come across that Digimon game. Raw Danger is also pretty cool. Great pickups!

Everything from the last post did end up working. Sold the keyboard already for $100 shipped. And turns out the Sony headphones are worth more than the Walkmans so I sold them separately. The Sony CD player does work but the LED display on the front turned off so there might be a loose cable or something, gotta check it out. Had to order a knockoff remote on Ebay to test the Bose.

Goodwill- Sony soundbar was $10.77. Goodwill- games were $4.67 apiece, movies were $2.54 apiece, sealed unexpired ink was $3.67. The 2 bottom movies are sealed. Goodwill- dvds were $2.54 apiece, VHS were 24 cents apiece, 1998 Tomy Pikachu was $3.67, and the 16.1MP camera was $10.77. Top row of movies are sealed. Small Thrift- $20 for everything. Cables are a Canon powersupply, Belkin Bluetooth adapter, and Logitech headset with base.

Saturday yard sales here in Baltimore got rained out, but Sunday was beautiful so I hit some that moved their date later by one day. First up was a community sale where I scored some goodies for the kids and this nice little Game Boy/DS lot for $25. One person mentioned maybe having some Intellivision buried in the basement, but they didn't seem keen on digging it out so I didn't press them on it.

WcT8qlp.jpg

After that I hit a community flea market on the other side of town and picked up the following items for $13. We recently rewatched the Keanu Reeves' Constantine (a better movie than most people give it credit for, IMHO), so I figured I'd pick up these books since they were only $1 apiece.

Finds 4-14-23

The season has started!  Only one local sale with anything decent.  There was one an hour or so away that advertised lots of games but I'm sure the prices would have been high and there would have been tons of people to scramble against.  Not to mention the night before snipers.  I'll just save my sanity and stick close to home for now.

[attachment=37884:IMG_0542.JPG]

[attachment=37885:IMG_0546.JPG]

Friday morning sale, first one to arrive.  Advertised PS3, movies and vinyl.  The PS3 games were $2 each, the PC games were $1 each and movies were $1 each.  The Gran Turismo 6 and Dark Mirror Demo (which he threw in for free) are both sealed.  Of course someone came over the night before and bought up all the vinyl.  The Daria Series has a cracked case, I'm sure I can find a replacement.  Also forgot I had just picked up Total Recall in 4K last Christmas, guess it goes to family.  I have never gotten to see the European version of Leon The Professional, kinda excited for that.

Finds 4-17-23

Went on a flea market crawl today, one of the stores got in a massive stock of what are apparently clearance games and movies from Walmart.  Everything in the next three pics cost a total of $99.

[attachment=37886:IMG_0539.JPG]

[attachment=37887:IMG_0550.JPG]

[attachment=37888:IMG_0541.JPG]

The games are priced as marked on the white tags, the movies are 2/$1.  All the games are priced lower than disc only per current Price Charting, I couldn't help but grab a large bundle.  Pac-Man, Dark Alliance and The Devil in Me all have loose discs so I'll have to open them immediately.  I had gotten a large bundle from them about a month and a half ago priced similarly as well.  If you're not finding clearance games at Walmart, it's probably because they're gathering them up and sending them to wholesalers like these guys.

[attachment=37889:IMG_0549.JPG]

This is the case and manual only, which set me back $30.  I don't normally do this but I'm 70% sure I have the game loose somewhere in a box.  The 30% is me believing that I'm thinking of the copy of Super Turrican for the SNES I have.  Regardless, this is much less than I would have normally had to pay for these.

Goodwill- Teeshirts were $5 apiece. Goodwill- PS2 guitars were $4.67 apiece, the MK Wii tin lunchbox was $2.97, sealed PC game was $4.67, UMD was $2.54, Nikes were $9.27. Goodwill- books were $9 apiece, Pokémon VHS was 24 cents, VCR DVD combo was $10.77, Sennheiser headphones were $4.67, games were $4.67 apiece. Small thift- sealed puzzle was $2. Not pictured is a Samsung DVD/VCR combo I got after work at GW last night for $15.

Saturday morning yard sales were kind of disappointing - I hit 20-30 houses and didn't see any competition, but there were no video games to be found. There were lots of houses that said they were holding on to old games for their adult children, and while I can respect that it gets kind of frustrating to hear after the fourth or fifth time. The best I came home with was a $1 small Samsung flatscreen for use when I set up games at events.
Sunday was kind of great, though. I didn't go out in the morning, but in the afternoon some local kids were going down the street to let people know they were having a yard sale nearby. It was about to time to take the kids out to the park, so I figured what the heck and stopped by. Anyway, I mentioned video games and the mom (who we know a little from around the neighborhood) brought out a box with the items below. I offered $60, she said she was thinking $20, so we settled on $40 since she wasn't sure any of it still worked. A few hours later and with a little elbow grease I got everything working, plus she said they might have more stuff in the basement, so that's rad. So yeah, random kids came by my house to tell me about a yard sale 2 minutes away and I found good games for cheap. Peak yard sale experience right there.

SvDksi0.jpg

Ugh! I need to get to some yardsales! My thrifts and local guys havent been bad lately but I know Im missing good deals like that N64 stuff!

Fire Police had a yard sale. Saw a Wii with some Guitar Hero stuff in a box. Already had a Wii and was walking so I let it. Was looking around and my sister found a box with a Game Boy Advance and a bunch of  random games from the original Game Boy up to 3DS, plus a random Leapster cartridge. Turned out to be $5 for all of it. I got the OG Gamboy Final Fantasy from it as it's all I wanted. There were some other decently valuable stuff in like a few Pokemon titles. Red, Black and one for 3DS. Plus some random games like Lion King, Yu-Gi-Oh, Dragonball Z, two GBA Videos that were the same one (Yugi vs. Joey) and a GBA game with the label ripped off.

While there I also picked up It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Seasons 3 & 4 for $1 each.

Then we stopped at the thrift store and I found CKY - Infiltrate Destroy Rebuild: The Deluxe Video Album. Only interested in it since it had a bonus DVD with 3 hours of extra footage. This was $2.49.

edit: Turns out the label ripped game was Hot Wheels: Stunt Track Challenge and World Race. Played World Race for a few minutes and it reminded me of F-Zero on Super Nintendo.

Goodwill- shirts were $5.17 apiece, shoes were $15 apiece. Hate paying that much for shoes at GW but a pair of 11.5 Derrick Rose's and 4 pairs of 12 Brooks will have plenty of resale. Goodwill- sealed 25 pack of CD cases $4.67, Nikon L810 $14.49, PS3 Sixaxix controller $4.67, Magnavox combo player $12, 2 Microboard CD duplicators $7.37 apiece, Fisher vertical cd player $12.49

Finds  5-1-23

First big weekend of the year was last weekend... and I got some sort of stomach virus.  It was the same community sale the next block over that I picked up an NES, Wii, Advance SP and NES Mini last year.  No way I was going to make it out of the house, fortunately I had some really good luck at the pawn shops and Goodwill on Monday.

[attachment=37916:IMG_0556.JPG]

Start off with the Salvation Army, these cassettes were $0.25 each.

[attachment=37917:IMG_0551.JPG]

Next up is finds from two separate pawn shops.  The XB One games were 3/$10 at one shop while the movies were $1 each for DVD and $2 each Blu Ray.  Cruel Intentions on Blu Ray is a definite BOLO.

[attachment=37918:IMG_0552.JPG]

Had some pretty good movie pick-ups between a few Goodwill stores, though I'm not exactly happy with their recent pricing policy.  B-29 Frozen in Time, Despicable Me and A Bronx Tale are all factory sealed.  Been wanting to check out Peaky Blinders for a bit and it's not one you see around often.

This is already a frontrunner for my find of the year.  Found the Pokemon Colosseum Bonus Disc on a Monday evening, it was the only Gamecube game on the shelf.  I figure the only reason it made it to the shelf instead of the online store was because it said "bonus disc" and the only reason it was there in the evening is because the price sticker was covering the Gamecube logo on the spine.  I was surprised as hell when I saw it because the local stores are notorious for sending anything of any value to be put online.  Disc and manuals are absolutely mint.

Thought my find of the week was going to be the autographed Buddy Guy CD (I was supposed to go to one of his shows a month ago but missed it).  This is something I've been starting to look out for, autographed CDs.  I've found about one per year recently without even trying.

About a pound or so of Lego for $5

Then the best part of the last few weeks a Super Famicom game at the local thrift store, complete and in very good shape:

Star Ocean $27

They also had Dragon Quest 5 and 6 and Romancing Saga 2 and 3 all for pretty high prices. Dragon Quest 5 and 6 were $70 apiece, and Romancing Saga 2 and 3 were $27 each.

Had to return the Nikon camera, wouldnt turn on with any batteries I tried. One of the CD duplicators doesnt seem to copy, the other one works fine. Gonna sell them as a bundle.

Goodwill- VCR was $10.67, shoes were $15 apiece, Little Mermaid light was $4.67, and the sealed Polaroid camera was $6.76. Goodwill- 2003 Hulk ornaments were $2.97 and the PS hoodie was $10. Goodwill- all of this was around $22. Sadly Mario is missing his hat and squirrel cape and Luigi is missing his squirrel cape. The puzzles are sealed. Small thrift- $19.40.

We finally had a dry weekend here in Baltimore, so I went out yard saling and had the best luck I've had since probably 2018. First up was a community sale in one of the nicest areas of the city that I like to hit up every year. There were less sellers this year than in the past, but this was made up for by the fact that some new folks were out. I spotted the BlazBlue games , Metropolis, and books at one of the first sales I hit. I grabbed those then asked about more games and the guy brought out some of his old GBA games. He wasn't sure if they still worked and, TBH, the contacts weren't in great shape, but I was definitely willing to risk it for such an awesome little cache. I ended up paying $60 for everything and, after a little elbow grease, I've gotten everything working again.

In the same community I picked up that cicada shirt for $1, and I mention it mainly because it turned out the seller worked on the SubNautica games, and it was cool getting to chat with him for a bit.

After that community sale I hit another one closer to my own neighborhood. The PS2 games were $5 for the stack so I grabbed those since they seem like my jam. After that I followed a map they had posted to a really out of the way sale, and I'm super glad I did. There was a young couple there clearing some stuff out, and when I asked about video games they brought out a stack of PS3 games and a DSi with some games. I grabbed the entire lot for $70, and they seemed to be grateful to be rid of the DSi since it reminded the woman of a bad breakup.

After that I hit up a flea market at a bar I frequent. No games, but I did get that Austin Powers lunchbox for $3 and the sasquatch doll for $1, and the'll make great prizes for the crappy movie night I host at the same bar.

Also, I made a great discovery. For years I've been trying to balance yard saling with childcare, since taking one of the kids out with me slows me down but leaving them both at home tires out my wife. This time, however, and I took both of them out and it worked pretty well! I just left them in the car with the windows rolled down while I hopped out at sales (I was never outside of eye contact/ear shot and the weather was cool) and they just entertained each other while I was out. I had a good time, they had a good time, and my wife got some much needed time off. So yeah, I'm excited to see if we can make this a regular thing.

Goodwill- TH Underground was $4.67, VHS tapes were 24 cents apiece, controllers were $6.76 apiece, 1997 Tweety fountain toy was $2.79, and Pokémon Yellow was $4.67! Can't believe that was just chilling on a rack they pushed out. Got nervous when it didn't have a price on it and the girl took it to the back. Thought they'd slap like $24.99 on it or something! Goodwill- Berenstain Bears story cards were in a bag marked $10, all sealed but all Pack 4. Was hoping for a whole set. Echo Spot was $6.76, works great going in the bedroom. St Louis Blues Thermos was $1.32. Small Thrift- paid about $40 for everything. Didn't realize it was half off everything day so I did another lap! Mahli Sunrise alarm clock, Thomas radio, Olympic pin sets, some metal Nascar cards, Xbox 360 battery adapters, Kindle Fire, VCR, DVD and Blu-rays
