memorable ps2 games:

Legaia 2 was actually pretty good. Not as good as the original (one of the most underrated RPGs IMO) but definitely worth getting if you can find it.

FFX and FFXII I think are easy must-haves although the former now has the PS3 HD version and the later is also getting this I believe...

Spy Hunter was really really fun back in the day

Dark Cloud was awesome, could never quite get into the second one as they really changed the building town aspect of it, but the original is a must-have

Kingdom Hearts 1 + 2 although Id hold off for the HD version of the second one to come out since the PS3 HD versions are the 'complete' ones

Gran Turismo 3 is free if you can find it...it was one of the first games and was quite excellent.

Shadow Hearts - a lot of people say this one. Its traditional and I started playing this a couple of months ago. Was pretty good, but then other games took my time, but I plan to get back to it.

Dragon Quest VIII - again very very traditional.

I *was* going to be a jerk and yell at whoever resurrected this thread. I believed it had run it's course, and surely there would be nothing of interest left at any stores by now. However, I appear to have been somewhat incorrect. Carry on.

Be warned, however, that there will come a day when it will no longer be acceptable to post in this thread, and I will be there to yell at anyone who does. Good day.

Just looked up all these games...wow I am ashamed of my ps2 library ignorance. Thanks for the lists guys. I think I have enough to get some use out of my ps2 now.

Some of these were already on my list, but I really like the shooters you mentioned. I guess it's also time to check out sly cooper, was always curious about that series.

This list is EXCELLENT. Every game you listed I became interested in right away. And I have to thank you for two other things now: I have spirit camera & the first thing I thought was "why isn't this a console game on the wii u?" Now I know why. Also, thank you for reminding me of clock tower. The name sounded familiar, & when I read about it I immediately recognized it. Had the first one for the PC. Loved it. Will definitely be on the lookout for the sequels now.

Really like the look of the RPGs you posted but especially Dark Cloud. That does sound & look like a must have.
And thanks for the info on KH, was planning on rebuying those since my ex stole them both but now I think I'll start saving up for a ps3.

Thanks again for the help guys.

If you like shooters, you might also want to check out Killer7, it's also available on the GameCube. A little out of the ordinary.

Speaking of out of the ordinary. A few odd titles you may want to review would be I <3 Katamari, Mister Mosquito and A Dog's Life.

I was in a GS store today and was surprised to see a shelf still full of PS2 games. Infact, it looked like it had been recently restocked. Nothing rare or exciting, but I still found six more titles worth picking up.

tales of legendia, radiata stories, arc the lad, star ocean 3 ect are among many ps2 rpgs and they mostly range from decent to great too.  I've barely cracked the list of them myself.

Just take a look in the genre section of gfaqs and I'm sure you'll find alot to choose from though prices are varied from game to game outside commonality and reprints.  xenosaga 1 is dirt cheap and 2 was even cheaper but 3 will run you up closer to retail price as an example.

oh and http://videogames.pricecharting.com/console/playstation-2?sort-by=name

price tracker is your if somewhat unreliable friend.  amazon wish list checking, checking ebay and price tracker are a must to get good prices.  I used it to pick up my 44$ fire emblem radiant dawn just around 2 weeks ago.

First, I am VERY sorry for resurrecting this thread, but it surprised me enough that I wanted to get some thoughts on it.  So, I went to a local GameStop that I knew still had some PS2 games (all disc only, of course).  They had printed a list for me the last time I was there about 3 weeks ago with what they still had in stock.  I knew a few I was going to grab at 75% off.  I find the games and they start ringing them up.  After the 3rd or 4th one, I see on the screen that they are FULL PRICE (minus 10% for PUR)!  WHAT!?!?

So, I ask and she says that, yeah they cancelled that clearance.  (Must have been recent since I bought some at 75% off the last time I was there)  I asked how do they expect to sell these at full price after they haven't sold at 75% off in the last year.  She said, she agreed, but supposedly they are going to be starting a "Retro Corner" or something like that.  She mentioned that they are accepting PS2 systems for trade-in again too...not games though.

Has anyone else heard of this?  What does this mean for the typical clearance cycles of the future?  PSP?  DS?  Etc.  I also checked gamestop.com and put an in stock PS2 game in my cart and it did NOT include the 75% off.  Weird!

I know they have adjusted pricing like this is the past. I have also heard they have a ton of retro games in a warehouse somewhere.  I doubt they are going to restock ps2 stuff. They may just mark up more desirable titles.

Well that sucks, but the last store where i had bought some at has been cleaned out since last fall so not a big deal.

Kind of surprised that they haven't started a retro gaming section, retro gaming seems to have gotten more and more popular. Plus they could make a shit ton of money, some of the old cartridge games sell for a lot these days.

thats nuts, I literally just bought one at 75% off like a couple of days ago. Oh well, Im more than done with this clearance. and if they are starting to sell retro games again, then YES! this is what Ive been hoping for for AGES. hopefully they are reasonably priced and they start bursting that retro video game bubble that has been growing for the last 4-5 years.

They will probably be covered in goo and smell funny.

Retro section is definitely a good idea.  I have been scavenging gamestops for various cheap wii games before they discontinue that.  Would have loved to still see ps1, n64, gc...  They know the markup is there for them.  I'm not sure how they would have sat on a warehouse of games though, unless it was dirt cheap to maintain.

Gamestop isn't a mom & pop game shop, though. They are paid to advertise the latest games and hardware. Not to mention the size of most stores is really not up the task of housing more than a single generation of games.

I think it is fabled more than a reality, but I guess we will find out. I thought a year or two ago they offered some retro games for rewards points, but I may have drempt it.

Yeah, the 75% clearance on PS2 games seems to be dead. The website has them at full price as well. Not surprising at all that the worst retail company in America is up to its old tricks again.

I think Gamestop would have done this years ago if they thought they would make a profit. The store space is probably the biggest reason they haven't. I would like it if they did, but I'd be surprised. I remember around 2001-2002 when they bought EB Games they had a big sale on NES games. I spent around a $150 and got Mega Man 1-6 , Castlevania 1-3, Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2, Punch out, Kid Icarus, Mario 1-3, Contra, and around 4 or 5 more I can't remember. I always rented games growing up so it was cool to own some of my favorites. The people working at the time thought I was crazy for spending $150 plus on old Nintendo games, but seeing what those games go for now I'm glad I got them when I did.

I'd really like to play games like rumble racing, downhill domination and splashdown rides gone wild again but I'm not sure if its worth the trip.
Just ran across this thread, so sorry for replying to such an old post, but, lol, I keep looking around for Downhill Domination. I only played it in-store demo way back, but it always cracked me up when I'd crash the bike. I'm also on the lookout for Samurai Shodown Anthology.

Because I am a very depraved individual, I usually check Gamestop's website every morning and evening at least once to see if anything new appears on their website for the PS2. The strange thing about all of this is that I just ordered some PS2 games from Gamestop no less than three weeks ago and they were 75% off. Even more strange is that they actually had a few Gamecube, Gameboy Advance and Xbox games in-stock as well. Only the second time I've caught a Gamecube game in-stock on their website in the last 2 years, with one of. After about an hour, they were all gone, save for X-Men Legends II on the Xbox, which is actually still in-stock. The interesting thing is that all GCN, GBA and PS2 games were listed as 75% off and the Xbox was not.

I ordered 7 games, and tried to order a couple copies of each game, just because they were so cheap and I could pass them around to friends looking for older games, but the website automatically knocked the order down to 1 per item. And of the 7, only 6 of them shipped. The copy of Asterix and Obelix for PS2 remained in an "open order" before I received a cancellation email on Wednesday.

You know, people have had 14+ years to buy these games and, instead, let them rot in some dark, forgotten corner of the universe. I'm not sure what "old tricks" they're pulling, but if people haven't picked up the PS2 games they wanted from Gamestop at this point, it's their own damned fault.

Also, there were some stories of Gamestop theorizing a "retro" store on their website a few years back, but nothing ever came of it...

http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/08/30/gamestop-planning-vintage-game-sales

Prior to that, they had a laughably maniacal "rewards" program where you could spend something like $5000 on used games and use the reward points to trade-in for a copy of Pac-Man. Wonder why it didn't last...???

The GameStop in Costa Mesa,CA still carries PS2 Games (Disc Only) and GameCube Games. All 75% off.

The employees at this location said that OC/nearby GS stores shipped their PS2/GameCube Games to them.

They only have 1/10 of the picture below last time I checked (last month). The picture was taken last year.

So someone posted this in the trade thread...maybe GS is back in the ps2 game:

In very strange news, my friendly store manager told me today that Gamestops are now accepting PS2 console trade ins again, and said the value is around $25. He said they're not selling them in stores, but shipping them out. I figured there must be some demand online for them, but he said he really doesn't know what they're doing with them.

*shrugs*

Damn they still have that many I remember when this started and I hit this one up but didn't really have that many good games

From what I've heard, next up in line for the 75% off is the PSP. The games are already b2g1. I remember the same thing happened for the PS2 and GC. At first they were b2g1 and then swithced to 75% off. Fingers crossed!

Why the fuck did you necro this old ass thread instead of asking your question in the appropriate area?

iirc, it went b2g1, b2g2, then 75%

Everyone was discussing it calmly before. Did you wake up on the wrong side of the rock?

I'm gonna revive this thread too cuz the store near my work has the ps2 games at 10 for $1. I dont know if its ymmv but i am definitely down for 10 cents for ANY game. The managr did a deposit at the bank where i work and told me about it since she knows i collect games. So i an heading there at 1:30 EST to check it out. Probably garbage but im just there to pad my game collection some more. At 3200+ games now and almost 700 of those are all ps2.

If they're in store they are almost certainly disc only. I don't know about you but I can't stand having disc only games in my collection. Also, they're probably all sports games or copies of "Th3 Plan".

See, that used to bother me too but i realized that i have cartridge only games so disc only is the same thing especially since i take care of my discs. Also as a game collector i am not the type who wants everything sealed or whatever, as i play my games. I don't collect to make money from it someday, its just a hobby of mine that i enjoy.

So i choose to have more games overall than far less games because if i only pay for them complete, its more expensive if you get nothing but complete games. But if its $10 for 100 games at this location then you can bet that if i don't own it, i soon will, sports titles or not. I have a list of every game i own and i keep a copy on my phone and update it whenever i get more games so i don't get games i already own.

I also don't get games just to flip them so if i own it i leave it be for someone who wants it at a good price. I'd rather have a rare disc only RPG than not have it at all.

I just called my only local gamestop that still has ps2 games, and they said they have been doing 10 for $1 since sunday. Headed out now!

So i get here and she now says theyre 10 for $10, not $1. Sorry everyone. She 100% told me earlier in the day it was 10 for $1. So lame since most of the games were less than $1 before. Not worth it at al unless u are looking for rare stuff. Glad i didnt make a new thread about it. Haha

PS2 broadband Ethernet Adapter was fetching crazy amount back in the days due to HDLOADER. Now not so much.

$10 for 10 games still seems like a good deal to me. I missed out on a lot of great JRPGs and fighting games that were released on the PS2, and I have the last model of PS3 that plays PS2 games before they discontinued that.

I would be amazed if you found anything like that at this point.

My store has a huge PS2 collection. One of the joys of living in a college town. And, we used to have three gamestops that were replaced by a single gamestop, so it got three stores worth of games when it opened a few months ago. It's also one of the only gamestops I have been in where all of the employees are female. (Not that there is anything wrong with that)

You know, you guys could always just check the website to see if they have anything in-stock.   It's not going to be 100%, but it should still register most of the inventory for whatever stores are carrying them unless they received random loose disc shipments left over from the 2012 purge that was never inputted.
