did anyone watch the live-action phoenix wright film?
Yes! Time for the Ace Attorney fangirl to take this thread to Slightly-Off-Topic Land!

I have the Region 4 DVD from Madman/Eastern Eye (linky with AUS/NZ release trailer: https://www.madman.com.au/catalogue/view/19457/ace-attorney) and it's just as weird as you'd expect a Phoenix Wright movie to be.

The good:

*It's a Phoenix Wright movie!

*It's a Phoenix Wright movie, legally available in English! (As long as you're willing to import and have something that can play region 4 DVDs)

*The R4 DVD has a nifty behind-the-scenes bonus feature.

*The cool hair, costumes, courtroom set design, and holographic Court Record.

*It won the Audience Award at the 2012 New York Asian Film Festival. Yay! :D/

The bad:

*No one has picked this up for English release outside of Australia/New Zealand. Safe to assume the "worldwide release" director Takashi Miike hoped for back in 2012-13 ain't happening.

*The subtitles. MM pretty much just took the film plus NYAFF subtitles (Capcom USA-approved, mind you), warts and all, slapped it on a disc, and called it a day. This includes the official English names (so you'll hear "Naruhodou-kun" and read "Phoenix" or "Nick", etc.), and a moment late in the film that seems really out-of-character (trying hard not to spoil anything) for the well, character, based on the subtitles.

*(Assuming you've at least played the first Phoenix Wright here) It should have really been called Turnabout Goodbyes: the Movie. It briefly touches upon AA1-1-3's stories, but AA1-4 makes up the lion's share of the film.

*It's a little long at 135 minutes, but it's shorter than playing through AA1-4 again. Yay? :???:

If you have the chance to check it out, go for it. It's not a bad way to spend a couple of hours if you're a Nickhead.

Capcom has four new Phoenix Wright themes in the Theme Shop. Two for the Trilogy and two for Dual Destinies for $1.99 each.

If you have an iPad or a larger iPhone, I recommend getting the Phoenix Wright games there. For one thing, you and your wife/brother/sister can install it on every device you have without annoyance. Second, it's nicer not having a resistive touchscreen, and it looks sharper, too.

Oh, and it's the same price as this sale, too (and often cheaper on sale).

The trilogy and Dual Destinies are both available on iOS.

Might have to bite on one of the PW games. I just wish they got a physical release.
Yeah, Crapcom is going more digital all the time, and like most publishers, digital is where it's at for them. Some companies can get away with that mentality, but when you see the very cool LE sets Japan gets for almost everyone of these Phoenix Wright games, you realize how crap their US division is.

I bought dual destinies because there was no other option, but I've owned the original games in physical form, and refuse to pay them for a digital only effort for the trilogy. They know they have fans over a barrel, and even if they don't do physical, they know they will sale these games no matter what.

Nintendo is slowly working this mind set in to their business model, and these guys can all go fuck themselves. When digital only games is all that's left, that's when I get out of gaming.

When Dual Destinies was released, one of the translators explained how a series that takes place in LA (in the English version) has so much Japanese stuff in it by saying it's an alternate universe where US citizens weren't racist against Japanese and allowed the culture to integrate with American culture. And apparently immigrate a Japanese demon.

Trilogy has a bit more bang for the buck since it is 3 games in 1, though said games are over 10 years old at this point.

[...]
In fact, it may interest/delight anyone/nobody to know, while they were first released in English about 10 years ago (ah the memories of the first one in August, 2005!), they were originally Game Boy Advance games that were ported to the Nintendo DS in its early months.

I loved the original Phoenix Wright games. Loved, loved, loved. So tempted to play them again...when I have a billion new games to play...including Dual Destinies...

What system was AA4 for again? DS?

did anyone watch the live-action phoenix wright film?
I did, a couple years before I ever played an AA game. I enjoyed it a lot even then, and playing AA1 for the first time afterwards, I could see the enormous amount of respect everybody involved in the movie had for the source material. Definitely worth seeing, regardless of whether you've played the games.

Yeah, I don't know who they were fooling with that. I wish they'd just kept it set in Japan. Did they really attract more people to the license by faking an alternate universe Los Angeles? Still turned out really charmingly, and man, I will love especially the first game forever, but sheesh.

So far I've completed the first two episodes of Ace Attorney. I'm loving it and jumped the gun and ended up buying dual destinies. Can't believe I missed these gems.

Better late then never. :)

I love the Ace Attorney games (with the exception of Apollo Justice, but for reasons I can't discuss without spoiling THE WHOLE GAME), and am glad that you gave it a try.

Lots of people missed these fun little products of the adventure game renaissance of the '00s, which is why non-Japanese-speaking AA fans are in the stinking mess chrislaustin so eloquently described upthread.

Capcom has decided digital-only is the way to go for any future Ace Attorney localizations... but they've also been frighteningly mum about the prequel.

Hey Capcom - let me help you with that: (if Naruhodou Ryunosuke is his maternal great-grandfather) Phoenix Wright is now 1/8 Japanese. GO.

I think they didn't realize how Japanese the 2nd and 3rd game would be, since the first game only really had the spirit channeling stuff.

As for the person asking about AA4, it is indeed on DS, known as Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. It is arguably the weakest of the series, though I think all the cases are stronger than case 2-3.

There is also a physical-only spinoff called Ace Attorney Investigations while stars rival Miles Edgeworth as he battles foes using the amazing power of Logic. There was a sequel but it was not localized.

There is also one more Ace Attorney game, kinda. Level 5 made a crossover game with Professor Layton, though the AA stuff is downplayed compared to Layton, particularly since Phoenix and Maya don't do much in the story.

Mercenaries Saga 2 is the closest we'll get to more Final Fantasy Tactics on 3DS, likely. I want it.
I've played about 15 minutes of it so far but I would call it a low budget version of Final Fantasy Tactics. It's very similar, but just doesn't seem as polished as FFT. My main gripe so far is I can't seem to rotate the battlefield, which has pissed me off on a couple occasions. I would say it's priced right, though I have no idea how long the story is. It's worth the price of a cheap lunch though, at least from what I've seen.

Not sure if this was posted earlier, but I noticed that this weekend's best buy ad has a Zelda protective cover for the New 3DS XL for $10. I picked one up and to be honest, it is MUCH better than the Hori silicone cover. The Hori top cover always slid off, where as this Zelda case by PDP actually clips onto the top and bottom. The only con for the PDP is that if you use a wrist strap, the cover doesn't let you use one.

With it on, can you still use the charging stand?

I have the Hori clear case and I've never had it slip off. Though I also have a skin for my N3DS that looks very similar to the one pictured there.

Interesting, mine must have been a dud. It never fit well to begin with, it had excess material I had to cut off with an xacto knife.

Mercenaries Saga 2 just might be the best value for your money on the eshop.  Now that I have had a chance to play it for a few hours, it's been hard to put down.  Yes, it still has its annoyances (the non-rotating battlefield, lack of 3D support, only 10 main characters I think) but it seems to be very well done (lots of items, variety of job classes at higher levels), has at least 20 hours of playtime, and is just a fun (basic, but fun) strategy RPG.  It's also a clone of Final Fantasy Tactics, but is that really that bad a thing?  Now that I see what it's like I would have actually been willing to pay $10 for it, possible even $20.  Any strategy RPG fan would do well to pick this up for $4.99, just don't expect anything too complicated or detailed.

Here is the new deal for today:

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth - $29.99 - 40% Off - Ends 7/20

Ending Soon:

Glory of Generals - $6.99 - 30% Off - Ends 7/9

Quell Reflect - $2.79 - 30% Off - Ends 7/9

Swords & Soldiers 3D - $5.59 - 30% Off - Ends 7/9
Talking Phrasebook: 7 Languages - $2.99 - 40% Off - Ends 7/9

Almost forgot, but anyone enjoying the Ace Attorney games might want to know that there is technically one more on the eShop, though not on sale. It's the crossover with Professor Layton. Phoenix and Maya get the short end of the stick and the plot is full of Fridge Logic and Fridge Horror if you look past the surface, but it's still a fun game.

And in addition to the upcoming prequel game, Phoenix and Maya are confirmed playable characters in the upcoming Project X Zone 2.

grabbed it. If it's half as much fun as that Ghost Recon SRPG was it'll be more than worth the price.

Sounds good! I'll have to pick it up too. Is $4.99 the regular price or is it a sale? I'm going to try to grab it tonight.

Persona Q is tempting at that price.  It's the kind of game I know I'll want digital so I can pull it up any time.  Though I also know Atlus puts their stuff on deep discounts regularly.  Will I get to it before it hits $20 on a sale?  Maybe not.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is out in two weeks (7/23):

I've Got to Run: Complete Edition! is on sale for 10 cents, in memory of Satoru Iwata.

Hello. As some of you may have seen, I've Got to Run! (Wii U eShop) and I've Got to Run: Complete Edition! (Nintendo 3DS eShop) are $0.01 and $0.10 respectively in North America. I just wanted to take a brief second to explain why.

Nintendo was not only the reason I got into making games, but they were the reason that I grew to love games as a passion as a kid. From Mario to Zelda to Metroid, Nintendo's games have always had an immediate appeal. I've tried to apply many of Nintendo's own game philosophies as well.

The late President of Nintendo Co., Ltd, Mr. Satoru Iwata, once said that "Games are to be one thing. Fun. Fun for everyone." While games can be more than fun - they can make you think, make you cry, and bring people together, the core of every game should be an enjoyable experience.

It is with this statement in mind that until 9 AM PT on July 18th, both of my games on Nintendo's platforms are available at their lowest ever prices - and the lowest prices on the eShop period. I want to completely remove the barrier to entry for enjoying a quick game. I hope you pick it up, and if they bring you even one minute of happiness, I'll feel I've done my job.

I appreciate all of your support, and hope that my humble games can bring a smile to your face in these tough times.

Thanks,
Syrenne McNulty
