 Anime Steals and Deals

**It is highly recommended you check the latest posts in this thread as they will often have the most up to date deals. I will attempt to reflect these sales in the OP, but always check the latest posts.**

Rightstuf

Rightstuf runs studio sales every week, sometimes even twice a week. These range from anime, manga, and even artbooks. Prices are decent, and Rightstuf has amazing customer service. I highly recommend them for that alone.

http://www.rightstuf.com/rssite/main/

You can save an additional 10% off a majority of their items (Including preorders) by buying their Got Anime membership

http://www.rightstuf.com/rssite/action/store/item/Item?ItemName=gotanime1

Amazon

Amazon tends to offer lower everyday prices on their anime, and often run sales on Funimation items routinely. Keep track on your favorites or check your daily deal's for a possible 5% off of some based off your history on Amazon.

(Also, I'd also recommend to check out Amazon's top 100 deals in Anime Bluray/DVD as they tend to show what's popular, or what is on sale.)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/movies-tv/2959127011/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_mov_1_3_last   (Blu Ray)

DVDPlanet / Deep Discount

Known by many for their bad customer service, they often make up for it with their lower prices on a lot of their items. This and they routinely run sales specifically for anime.

http://www.dvdplanet.com/Pages/Search/Category.aspx?ec=42000

http://www.deepdiscount.com/index.cfm

I highly suggest when you order from them to only order in stock items, and not ones that are backordered. Save yourself the displeasure of having to deal with the headaches. And patience is a must with these sites.

Cheapassgamer

Maybe you will find something here on our own forums! We have a thread dedicated specifically to Anime and Manga for sale from fellow Cags.

Has anyone been keeping track of the rightstuf mega deals?
I've just been adding things I might want to a wishlist on the site since they typically put them all back up (at least those still available) on the final day(s) of the sale. Then I can just pick from the list at that point.

With Sentai, promo codes are not something you get unless you've either won a contest they held or you have a gift certificate code.

Actually, Sentai always has had a promo code on cyber monday (they did thus year but I forgot to order), and one around this time or closer to the new year.

Actually, Sentai always has had a promo code on cyber monday (they did thus year but I forgot to order), and one around this time or closer to the new year.
Last time I remember seeing a promo code offer from them was back when they had announced they were going to discontinue new title DVD releases in either late 2017 or late 2018, and they had a code offer if you spent either $200+ or $250+ you could get a free Blu-Ray player. SO I guess just haven't noticed any promo code offers they've run since that time.

~ DVDs-only on sale from Sentai Filmworks ~

Blu-Rays are also on sale, many for better prices than during the Black Friday sale, but you will have to check those prices on your own since I'm not monitoring those tightly.

Urgh, one of the things I already ordered but hasn't shipped yet is cheaper from a mega deal by $6. But I can't cancel the order because something else in my order isn't on sale anymore. Guess I'll just have to eat the loss.

Btw, here's a coupon for 5% off on Rightstuf: HOLIDAY2020

It won't work on the things that say not eligible for promotional discounts of course.

So far nineteen titles have sold out during this holiday sale, which title will sell out next? Well, I'm not at all shocked that "Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya 2wei!" and "Chaika" both finally sold out, only that it took this long. Even Illya is taken aback in disbelief by how long that took to happen.

Did SquareHard get crushed under a mountain of his own collection or something? Not seen him posting in ages.

No one bothered to cover the RightStuf Holiday sale. Guessing Amazon must not put anything on sale these days since I never see that site even discussed on any anime forums anymore. RACs Holiday Sale was, lacking, so I didn't bother to bring it up. Couple of other anime-centric sites I keep a eye on didn't even have sales this past year, which was just sad.

F.y.e? I don't even know if they had a sale this past holiday season, for certain they didn't make a effort to e-mail out about it if they did. Checked with Fry's, and a handful of anime titles were on clearance, but there wasn't a sale outside of that on any anime. Best Buy and Wal-Mart were likewise a whole lot of nothing this holiday season.

RightStuf did have some good deals during their holiday sales, but there was no way I was going to attempt to keep track of a thousand plus home video products from them in addition to monitoring Sentai's still ongoing, and comparatively much smaller, sale.

Oh yes, NISA did have anime on sale during their annual BF/CM sale, but the prices were... well it's NISA. Prices even on sale would still make you flinch and question what decade you were living in. And the same titles were additionally on sale from RightStuf, at only a couple dollars more, but with free shipping available, so the savings was actually in buying them from RightStuf if you had wanted any of their very much aged releases.

And on that note, I am quite shocked NISA is still clinging on to being a anime publisher. They recently, before the holidays, announced BD reprints of select titles, which was rather shocking. Sadly it is titles they still have in inventory, and not titles that have been OOP for some time, further raising the question of "is there a point to doing that?". For certain I've not personally seen a lack of inventory of the existing prints of the titles in question, and NISA hasn't made any indication of a price drop forthcoming for said titles. Just to be clear, I legitimately don't have any desire to see them exit the market. I'm being critical of their business practices because I can't make sense of what they're doing and it's frustrating to see this play out like they have no clue what they're doing after all these years. But then, it does seem as if they really don't know what it is they're doing where anime publishing is concerned. I think as far as localization and product production is concerned they're top end of the market in quality department, but it feels like they're oblivious to every other publisher in existence beyond Pony Canyon USA and AniPlex USA. And sure, with their premium edition releases I can see them charging like those other two companies, but if they're hoping to earn some market share they should be paying attention to the successful publishers, like Viz, Sentai, Funimation... dare I even say Media Blasters? Sure, why not.

I don't think many people here pay money for blu-rays often.

I spent $400-$500 at Rightstuf last month during the holiday sale. Really pleased with some picups like Konusuba, SAO S2 LEs, Reincarnated as a Slime LE, Fairy Tail collections, etc. Was also able to finish off the JoJo's LEs with the Amazon sale.

There is so much stuff to buy and I can't afford it all so I just wait until sale season and bang out as many shows on my wishlist as possible, starting with the LE's that I've got prioritized.

Kinda bummed about missing out on the Violet Evergarden LE and now I'm trying to hunt down The Rising of the Shield Hero. Sales are great, but it's not like I'm going to pay $70+ for the nice chipboard box sets while they're new; enough stuff goes on closeout.

Head's up! Sentai's Holiday Sale is ending tonight, not on January 5th as they had originally advertised! No word given as to why this changed.

Didn't order that much from Sentai this year.  Hope Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya 2wei! comes back in stock for a later sale.  There are others I'd like to get decided to hold off this time.  Hope to pick them up during the next big sale. I can wait til the next holiday sale.  By then, some other dubs I'm waiting for should be out and may be on sale, too.

Speaking of rereleases, Sentai's releasing another version of Flying Witch. Dunno why but they spruced up the box art.

I got my sentai order and some pokemon dvds. Still waiting on 2 separate rightstuf orders to ship. You can ignore the ladies, they just arrived after 3 months out at sea.

Upon starting up the disc for Patlabor I was surprised to see this huge warning sign.

mC7CZ8I.jpg

(Excuse the screenshot I took with my phone because the video player I use to playback blurays on pc blocks screenshots, even 3rd party screenshots)

At first I thought that meant only the Japanese dub got the HD rendition. But nope. The original english dub of Patlabor had a lot of censored scenes. Like in the first 5 minutes, there's a scene with a drunk guy drinking alcohol that was cut in the english release. So they included 2 full remastered 1080p hd  video files for each episode. A Japanese version completely uncut, and an English dub with the censored video file. I find it really impressive they cut the HD video up from the HD source to match the original censored english release. It's the best of both worlds. I wish stuff like Sailor Moon, Digimon and Cardcaptors got this kind of treatment. Let us get the original dub and uncut footage all in one.

That is impressive! Yeah, the Viz re-release of Sailor Moon was actually rather dull with that lackluster new, un-entertaining, dub they shilled so hard about. I already own the Maiden Japan re-release of Patlabor on DVD, but now knowing there's uncut episodes on the BD set makes it tempting.

As for why Sentai is re-releasing so many of their titles as of late is a simple explanation, they officially changed their company name from "Sentai Filmworks" to just "Sentai" back in June of last year. All the releases since then just say "Sentai" on the packaging.

So far they have re-released or announced re-releases for all the following titles they already previously released with packaging reflecting their new shortened company name.:

-

Beautiful Bones: Sakurako's Investigation
Bodacious Space Pirates

Black Bullet

Diabolik Lovers

Flying Witch

Girls und Panzer: This is the Real Anzio Battle! (BD-only, original release was a BD/DVD combo)

Gourmet Girl Graffiti

Hayate the Combat Butler

Motto To Love Ru (re-release, now with dub)

Negima! + Negima!?

Punch Line

Shiro Bako (re-release, now with dub)

The Garden of Words

The Pet Girl of Sakurasou (re-release, now with dub)

Tonari no Seki-kun: The Master of Killing Time

Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle

When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace

And I have to say I am confused on two of these re-release choices. The one Girls und Panzer OVA by itself when a GuP Ultimate Collection has been rumored now since last summer is standing out as a oddity. And the Hayate the Combat Butler: Ultimate Collection which is, as were the original releases, sub-only when they just recently began releasing dubbed episodes through streaming platforms comes across as a questionable choice.

All the same, we're very likely to continue seeing re-release announcements mixed in with their monthly new release announcements, as they slowly cycle titles they already hold licenses to in under the new "Sentai" branding.

I know that the USPS sucks more than usual, but damn! Ordered a few anime titles during Sentai's sale on December 22nd and the package is still in transit. Anyone else still waiting for anything from Sentai?

Same here. My Sentai order (Utawarerumono DVDs and Cutey Honey Universe Blu Ray) has been in transit from Pittsburgh since 1/5.

That's nothing. My Rightstuf order from August 1 took until mid November to arrive.

I had two packages take over two weeks from USPS to get delivered, one from sentai, one from RS (basically the same thing). A 3rd is going on a week (supposed to be delivered today, but it's delayed, not surprisingly). Usually it's a couple of days.

At least the tracking is being updated ("it's not lost, it's delayed" lol).

I can at least be sure that it will survive the extended trip with the way RS packages their shipments :)

My Sentai order got divided up due to one of the items being on backorder. I got the first shipment awhile back, but now the second one I got the shipping notification for today.

I also have a Rightstuf order still in limbo, but I had some pre-order items as a part of that and I'm guessing they felt it was cheaper to just wait.

Yea, my season 1 of Food Wars finally arrived a few days ago since it was on backorder, even though when I placed the order it was in stock. Still, everything arrived so it's all good :D

Final part of my Sentai Holiday Sale order arrived today.

Still waiting on 3 items to ship from my sentai order that were on backorder.

Food Wars, Big O, and Highschool of the Dead.

All say ETA on restock January 29th. Hop that sticks.

Picked up a couple of items from that Amazon sale. Season 3 of Overlord is still a bit pricey, but I went ahead and bit the bullet. The classics copy of Season 2 is much more affordable, thank goodness. Also went ahead and got the full first season box of ReZero.

I am not a fan of Anime but I will give it a try. Any advice from what to start?
Cowboy Bebop is a great entry point as its format is very western in nature, so it makes it a bit easier to dip your toes in. Also, any Studio Ghibli movie (though Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are the best ones imo).

I recommend Death Note. It's the only anime I've been able to get my dad and brother to watch. All other attempts have failed :(

Also, for starting out anime, I think you'll have an easier time with English dub rather than subtitles.

Anime to start from can be a difficult question. A lot of it comes down to personal preference.

If you like to talk to other people about your media, you will likely want to stick to anime that is coming out right now. Modern anime trends focus heavily on seasonal shows and a lot of turn over. Most shows only air for a single season, or there is becoming bigger gaps between multi-season shows. This is typically the realm of people who are already fans, so I wouldn't recommend it to those unfamiliar with the medium.

Cowboy Bebop is one of my all-time favorites. But if you like long-form storytelling, you might not like it. It is very episodic, with only the occasional nod to serialized storytelling. This can make it much easier to drop into, and much less of a binge-risk. But for those who love to binge, it is not nearly as good of a fit. On the plus side, it oozes style, has some very fun characters, and is more laid-back than some other options. Not a big commitment, but plenty of quality. This is often why it is a common first-time recommendation.

FLCL. This is a much harder recommendation to stomach. But if you want some "weird" anime, with some of the more bizarre or strange cultural influences, this one will do you proper. It clocks in at a scant six episodes, making for a very short series. I can't stress enough just how weird and off-the-wall this series is. If you hit it off with this one, you can probably dive into just about any anime.

Serial Experiments Lain. Easily the most art-house of my recommendations. It is a relatively short series, only 13 episodes. Quiet, restrained, and deeply psychological. Despite it being reliant on technology for its narrative, it is somehow more relevant today than it was when it came out. For anyone looking for something more narratively complex, somber, and intellectual.

Food Wars. (Shokugeki no Soma) This is one of my more modern recommendations. It features all of what you would consider modern anime "tropes." It has scantily-clad fan-service ladies. It has melodrama. It has teenagers attending a ridiculous school. These are all litmus tests for how high your tolerance for some of the medium's more egregious elements will be. Wrapped up in all of this are a broad cast of very fun characters, tons of appealing humor, and lots of delicious food. This is essentially Iron-Chef in anime form. An entire series centered around cooking competitions. Good stuff while easing you into a lot of anime tropes.

I'd also add Stein's Gate (and the movie) to Richard Kain's solid list. The concept of parallel timelines and time travel may be more prevalent today in shows and movies, but Stein's Gate (which I think is now 10 years old!) still is an enjoyable ride, and does it as well or better than most today. There is also a movie that came out after the anime that you should watch if you go through the series. It nicely wraps up a few loose ends from the story.

I prefer dubs, and Stein’s Gate has an excellent cast courtesy of Funimation.

Lastly, at least for me, while I don't mind watching an anime now and then, I'm always pressed for time so another way to experience anime is by trying movies rather than shows. There are some excellent stand-alone anime classics like Ghost in the Shell or more recent flicks like Promare.

If you want to try anime through a movie (shorter commitment), I'd recommend you start with an all-time favorite, Hayao Miyazaki's the Castle of Cagliostro, which is available on bluray and UHD. It's also got an awesome dub from a supremely talented cast. Same goes for the other two films I mentioned.

There's also stuff like Paprika and Perfect Blue, which were Westernized with two highly acclaimed movies. Paprika is also a very beautiful-looking film that helps you see the benefits of the medium.

I need to see those. I do think I watched Perfect Blue a long time ago, but it may have been just on in the background.

Both of those are by the late Sotoshi Kon, who also did Millennium Actress, another acclaimed film I need to see!

Never enough time ...

Absolutely go with Cowboy Bebop and Death Note. I have friends who are not into anime, but who are crazy about those two shows. Both of those titles are classics in every sense of the word.

My recs for getting into anime:
Read or Die(The 3 ep OVA, not 26 ep season Read or Dream, both are R.O.D.) It is short and has interesting characters doing cool things.
Azumanga Diaoh, for a comedy different style than you see in the current mainstream America.
Karas (2 movies), for Japan's take on the western super hero story.
Fooley Cooley, FLCL for a pace you do not get to see outside of anime.

All shows feature very little to no objectionable content. My list does not include anime's ability to create great overarching storylines spanning 50+ episodes.

Just start with whatever you find interesting on Netflix. All of them of pretty decent and have english dubs. I would recommend Cowboy Bebop, FMA Brotherhood, Your Lie in April, Evangelion (a bit more hardcore than the rest), Death Note.

Recommendations are purely subjective to individual tastes and opinion.

I personally consider NGE to be a masterpiece, and do tend to recommend it, though finding it harder to do so now that NetFlix has tainted the series with their evil by pairing the series with a crappy dub that should never have been made! And I have encountered people who are super into the horror & gore genres that do actually recommend Elfen Lied to people new to anime. While I do also like Elfen Lied, I would never blindly recommend that as a title to watch to just anyone unless they had indicated they were into horror/gore/splatterhouse type titles.

And this is the big problem with people who recommend things in general, You should always ask the person who wants recommendations a bit about what they have already seen they like, or if they haven't seen any anime at all what sorts of TV shows and movies they're into. Make educated recommendations catered to the individual instead of throwing titles at them like you're firing off a round of bird shot from a 12 gauge shotgun at a target the size of a teacup saucer a mile away and hoping something hits. That having been stated.

I am not a fan of Anime but I will give it a try. Any advice from what to start?
Have you seen any anime you've liked already? And what sorts of TV shows and movies are you into Nifuro ?

The question is just a pandora's box for suggestions when we don't know anything about what you're interested in. One of the first anime I watched after a long dry spell was Code Geass amongst others that came out that year. It's remained as one of my top anime of all time. Then again, I don't know if that type of show is your thing. I like the suggestion of just checking out Netflix anime and seeing if anything pops out at you.

EL has one of the best openings of all time, but then there's this constant switching from interesting story to some loli cat girl harem nonsense that turned me way off. Too many characters with amnesia and a weak ending. The amount of anime tropes it covers is even worse than Evangelion, but at least it doesn't have Evangelion's existential crisis of an ending. The point is that neither are good to START with.

I'd say that the reason why the person is "not a fan of Anime" is because they feel the same way about immature tropes and horrible dubs as I do. Those are prevalent throughout anime, so they haven't found anything they liked. Out of the 600+ series on my hard drive, probably 80% of them are geared towards lonely virgins needing a waifu and are rife with superficial fluff. And I don't touch them again after a few episode trial. I don't think just browsing is an encouraging recommendation, too much crap out there.

My suggestions then are based on more adult anime that is easy to digest without all the fanfare and incessant screeching that most anime is known for. Rising of the Shield Hero, Demon Slayer, and Ghost in the Shell tell good stories while minimizing the childish stuff. Parasyte is pretty good. Fullmetall Alchemist: Brotherhood is a slog and has the lighthearted non-sequitur, but there are some emotional moments mixed in. There's no loli-groping or other deviancy, which is another bonus. All of them are mainstream, the very definition being that a majority of people like them, so they are safe bets.
