Bandai Will Stop Shipping Anime to Retailers In November
Ken Iyodomi, who is the president of Bandai Entertainment, sent us over a letter this morning to give us a heads up on what we've known has been coming and just never had a date for.

He writes:
"I am writing to inform you that Bandai Entertainment Inc in discontinuing its home video publishing and distribution business effective March 1, 2013.

As we methodically wind down the business, the last day that Bandai will be accepting any purchase orders is November 15, 2012, with our last shipments occurring on November 30th, 2012.

On Behalf of Bandai Entertainment Inc, I want to express our gratitude for the opportunity we've had to do business with your company, and I think you in advance for your understanding and assistance during this period."
Well, we all knew this was coming up. While Bandai's remaining catalog of Anime release will 'officially' go out of print in November, I just want to remind everyone that quite a few of their SKU's have already stocked out and others will probably sell out prior to the Nov cutoff, so if you need to pull the trigger on any of their stuff, don't wait too much longer.

This also means that current backorders for existing products are less likely to be filled, but we will do whatever we can to bring in as much Bandai stock as we can afford to between now and November.

Several people have written in a little confused about Bandai's announcement last week that they will stop shipping to retailers in November. Most people want to know "what's going to happen to all their titles"? We'll here's the deal - effective Nov of this year everything in Bandai's DVD and BD catalog will officially go out of print (as will their entire selection of manga in October). Bandai has said they intend to shop some of these licenses out, but that process is likely to be slow and their back-catalog is just way to big to be absorbed into the market by the rest of the industry as it stands, so while it's likely that a few of the premium licenses will eventually end up getting re-released by someone else (hey Sentai, please pick up K-On season 1, OK?), I imagine most of their catalog will simply go dark. Now that doesn't mean that all their releases will just vaporize in November - retailers like us are currently scrapping together as much money as we can find to do big final buy-ins on Bandai's remaining stock, and at least for us, we're hoping to stock some of their titles pretty deep assuming we can get them. Over the next 6-12 months I would expect prices to rise for OOP Bandai titles that end up getting bought up quickly and become a little harder to find. This will, of course, result in the same bitching and moaning characterizing any price increases as greed and averice from the usual suspects who couldn't be bothered to pull the trigger on these titles for the many years they were available at the regular prices. Oh joy, I can't wait to read those people comments! :) But I also expect prices to decrease for a time on the titles that retailers choose poorly on and end up bringing in too much stock.

And before you ask, I have no idea what will become of Gundam - that series is an awfully big bite for another studio to try to take on. I fear the chances now that we'll ever see ZZ, Victory, or Turn a Gundam released in R1 are now pretty slim. ~sigh~

Anyway, we're going to go through the site during for the next couple of weeks and mark all Bandai releases as 'discontinued - limited to stock on hand' and also we'll be publishing a list shortly of all in stock Bandai titles so that you can see if there is anything you need before the lights go out in November.

Well aware of that.
I'm thinking of grabbing a copy and keeping it sealed for the time being. I'm very sure another company will pick up the series and start producing them again... but it'd be nice to hold onto an original Bandai print.

I just wish bandai would at least tell us what shows are currently being discussed with other distributors, that way I know what I absolutely have to buy.

I agree with this cause we dont want to have to scurry out to get the anime titles before they go OOP and find out that they are going to go to another distributor.

I think that would be up to the other distributors to discuss, once Bandai's licenses expire.

Are the Gundam Seed Destiny movies worth getting? (I did order the two box sets of the series already.) I noticed the fourth movie is no where to be found.

I'd say they are the preferred version to watch if you just want to know the general plot of the series. And not have to sit through the 50 episode mess. Along with that it has an expanded ending with few extra minutes.

Sadly the fourth movie, along with the rest of them went completely out of print a few months ago. Happy I got them back in February for $4 from the Rightstuf seller on Amazon.

Just got my package of Gundam titles in from Right Stuf. The only downside is that they are all "Anime Legends" box sets. The upside is that they are all brand-new and in fantastic condition. Complete collections of Gundam 0079, Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Gundam Zeta, and Gundam 00. That's a healthy helping of Gundam.

I'm still lacking most of Alternate Century series. Might have to wait a few weeks before ordering those.

I've picked up both season of Code Geass today from best buy. I also got gurren lagaan on the way from amazon. I really liked these series, but there is so much else to pick up.

I hope some other publisher picks up the gundam series, since I'm not going to have the funds to get all of those.

If you liked the series, they are a summary of a series in movie form, I didn't find this out till I rented it and started having dejavu. I did think it moved the plot along alot faster.

Most anime movies do this, and have a little bit of extra/modified footage as well.

And I guess Seed Destiny is worth it if it's cheap enough, so long as you don't invest as much as I did into the series (buying each individual volume and the collectors boxes... boy was I stupid)

Oops, I think I asked my question in the viz sale thread lol. I was curious if the Gundam 00 movie: A Wakening of the Trailblazer is worth getting because I just got the tv series. I think I saw somewhere that said it was a sequel to the end of season 2?

Essential viewing, a lot of things alluded to throughout the series come to pass

Eh I am going to go against the current and say don't bother. The plot is a coherent mess and the antagonists are probably the stupidest ever thought of for Gundam. I liked Gundam 00 and this movie left a sour sour taste in my mouth. Only thing worthwhile are the Gundam battles, that is it.

I didn't think it was all that bad but not the best movie ever made for sure. I'd say its worth watching at least once for closure purposes

I've been back and forth on whether to check out the original Gundam series for a while, guess now I have to make my decision fast. Problem is I just watched Gundam SEED, and if the 2 are really that similar then I'm probably going to want to wait a long time to watch.

Similar situations yes, boy pilots gundam to save friends and teens and other civilians get pulled into war but the overall story is very different. I wouldnt write them off as being very similar at all.

Yeah no huge pacifist stance in 0079 Amuro is a mass murderer by the end and it never seems to bother him

when does rightstuf charge? when its shipped or when the order is placed?

just asking as i got an email a day or two ago saying inuyasha is on backorder?

ive never ordered from them before but people seem to say they are reliable and well i have wanted the inuyasha seasons to go along with the movies i own for quite a while now so...and the price was right.

They charge you when they ship. They once in awhile send you a message like that. Either meaning your package is almost ready to ship, being shipped, or just to let you know they haven't forgotten you.

ah sweet. good to know....maybe they will take a while i lack the funds for it at the moment but i dont really want to cancel such an amazing deal so hopefully this waits a few more weeks before being fulfilled lol

Picked up Gundam Wing and 00 S2 from Rightstuf. Best Buy doesn't look like it'll ship my 00 S2, since it's now gone from their site.

Plan on getting Kannagi, Haruhi S2+chan+movies, and I'll probably be satisfied. Maybe Big-O, but I doubt it. I only moderately liked S1, but I never watched the second.

Picked up Escaflowne and Eureka Seven Collection 2. Still debating about Outlaw Star, but other than that, I consider myself done finally.

I personally preferred SEED to the original (don't get me wrong though the original is still very good), however the original expands amazingly (leads into all the other UC gundams, many of them being really good) whereas SEED becomes ....destiny T_T.

So does anyone have an opinion on Gundam 00? Is it good or bad? Just noticed that Amazon didnt have the second season available from them and was curious if the series was good or not.

I have not seen them yet, but after ordering the 1st season, I encoutnered the same problem. I ended up ordering the 4 parts individually and i thought it was cool bc i got the special editions and they come with the DVDs + manga. so that may be a possibility.

I watched all but the last two episodes of season one and so far I've enjoyed this show a lot! I also need to find season two.

I watched a couple seconds the other day and saw a bunch of Haros hopping around. I figured it went even deeper.

It's good. But not as good as some other recent releases (such as Seed or Unicorn). Also the movie is a bit weird.

Hard to say whether something is good or bad with nothing to base taste on. Personally I thought Seed was alright and Destiny was the biggest POS I had ever seen . I liked Gundam 00 season 1 , season 2 though goes into some weird territory and has some very jarring episode editing with fight scenes in particular being broken up by end credits or some other random crap all the time . The story drags a bit here and there but still worth a watch

I sorta liked Destiny. Needed more Kira and Lacus though. I didn't really give a damn about Shinn and his incessant whining.

Anyone know a good place to buy Gundam 00 seaosn two, for a reasonable price? It seems everyone has removed it or is out of stock.

I got my copy of Narutaru (not Bandai in case you're new to the thread) in the mail the other day. I was very excited until I opened up volume 2 and found that the case was empty. Thankfully the seller was fantastic, and is shipping me out a replacement copy of volume 2. I thought it was kind of funny that the picture on the back of the box set was one I had seen several times before, but I had no idea that this show existed prior to this thread. :)

I also received my copies of The Girl Who Leapt Through Space. Unfortunately I had ordered a new copy of volume 1 from GoHastings on Amazon, and what they sent me was a joke. It wasn't sealed, was in a 2 disc Blockbuster Video case (that was ripped), and had a big scratch on the DVD. I've contacted them, but I haven't heard anything back.

Also, I can't believe how many DVDs Bandai released in ultra-cheap plastic cases (the kind that smell like you bought a bootleg disc when you open them). Hayate, TGWLTS, and to a lesser extent the Haruhi movie. Are the smaller Anime Legends sets using those same horrible cases?

I ordered Gundam 0079 for 29.99 per set from Rightstuf and I'm pondering Gundam 00. I already own a large majority of their titles as it is, I do hope someone else licenses their titles though.

Try Best Buy's website or your local store, that's where I got my copies of S1 and S2 back in May or June.

Before I pay more than I would like to for Gundam 00 Second season, I'm curious if anyone knows if theres a chance it will be printed again before Bandai's completely gone. I noticed at Rightstuf its still listed as More Arriving soon, so should I wait and see and risk paying even more if not?

I've seen Gundam 00 Season 2 available at my two Best Buys since they were released, no sense spending more if you have easy access to a local store... in fact I'm probably going to pick up a copy this week just so I can have the damn thing.

I'm fairly certain bestbuy removed it from their website a little bit ago, but they had been out of it for awhile before that.

And so it begins with some bandai anime getting hard to find (Gundam 00). Maybe there will be a miracle and the second season comes back before the november deadline.

You can always ask them and see when they will have more in stock. And as for another shipment of gundam 00 season 2, you mever know. I mean i thought i would never know cowboy bebop on dvd back in the summer when amazon didnt have it in and it went for so much money but it did get back to real price. Maybe gundam 00 s2 will too.
Local stores are definitely good for anime obscurity.
Have to agree with you on that. Always fun to find them.

unfortunately those are becoming harder and harder to find

wal mart barely carries anime anymore beyond bleach, naruto and dbz. best buy is getting less and less anime. i think FYE is the only wide spread store that still stocks anime and by that i mean a lot of anime and any anime.

where i was born not where i am living right now we used to have a local anime store there for a year i think...but it closed down. such a shame too. cant blame them though they were in an odd part of town and just couldnt keep getting people to come in...i think its cause the prices on stuff was kind of high. but they would order anything so i tried to support them. odd part of town and questionable advertising did them in.

they are also where i got my blue plush tachikomas that dont exist anywhere anymore lol.

FYE is a place you may be able to find gems. But keep in mind..its no cheap ass gamer price. They have to be the most expensive place in the world. They do happen to still have a Wolf's Rain(Anime Legends) at my local FYE but I believe its 49.96. My local Packards has a SMALL anime section...very small(Was able to complete my hack/legend of twilight)...as for pawn shops...the only find I have found lately was a Lupin the 3rd movie...and its not Bandai..cool though.

I tried buying up my back catalog of Bandai stuff there, and ended up returning half of it. Because of the packaging or whatever, a lot of those Anime Legends releases were scratched to all hell, and many of them had been opened previously and resealed.

RightStuf is pretty cool overall, so I'm guessing they just got some bum stock from Bandai, and I imagine it will happen with stuff you buy from Amazon as well. Just be forewarned!

well yes but if you can find it and its an OOP anime FYE prices are quite reasonable. and they do sometimes clearance stuff and are prone to B2G1 sales. so they arent too bad sometimes.

Damn the local Best Buy barely has any anime so of course Gundam 00 S2 is no where to be found. I wonder if I should visit the local anime shop.
