My brother-in-law really wants a 3DS. He's used my 3DS XL a few times but didn't like how "flimsy" the XL's clamshell design felt. But he's really enjoyed playing Luigi's Mansion and has dropped some not-so-subtle hints about what he really wants for Christmas.

Suffice it to say, I've been eyeing that Luigi's Mansion/3DS bundle for him. Is the clamshell on the 3DS as wobbly as it is on the XL? And in terms of battery life, how does it compare?

I've never even held a standard 3DS before so I do appreciate any help.

Apparently the speakers are better on the 3DS and the XL with the bigger screen makes jaggies and what not more noticeable, or so I heard

Being that I've only played on the XL, I can't really compare these differences so perhaps someone else can share their insight on this
 
hmm didn't there used to be a PSN 1 year card on sale? I dont see it listed anywhere now, could have sworn i saw it before. I read gamestop changed some things around. Did they pull it? Really wanted one for my cousin

also can you buy the GS sale stuff online? I dont really want to mess with going in store

They both have their pros and cons.

The regular 3DS:

Better speaker quality
Easier to fit in a pocket
Images aren't stretched
Can find the circle pad pro in any store

XL

Better hinges
DS games look better
Longer battery life
Actual buttons for the necessary functions
Slider for 3D locks in place to turn it off

Surprised that the 3DS has the weaker hinges, though.

That 3DS that comes with the Luigi's Mansion bundle... is it that ugly teal color? Or a more normal shade of blue? I'm having a hard time telling with the grainy scanned images on the Web.

I believe it is the same color as the fire emblem 3ds, minus the decal. (Darker blue)

Also, it could have been that the 3ds I had was the original (big box) could have something to do with the hinge quality. You really felt how loose it was when you opened the clamshell up, and you move slightly and the screen pops back an inch.

Don't take his post at face value. I refrained from outlining pros and cons because people experience different things.

My hinges are fine. I've had my 3DS for a long time now and I've put a lot of hours into it.

DS games do not look better on the XL. I have no idea why anyone would even post that.

The 3DS XL has an option to play DS games without stretching them.

The 3DS has an option to opt out of 3D before starting the game and the slider won't affect it.

I've heard both sides of that statement. I know he has a lot of DS games from back in the day; they'll be getting some use once he gets a 3DS and it would be nice if they didn't look like crap.

They honestly look the same if not worse. By worse I mean not disabling the stretch. By same I mean, you know... the same. It's lit well, so that's a plus for either system.

I don't think the system looks bad as much as you start playing 3DS games and realize that most DS games (especially those that were heavy on the 3D) just don't hold up as well graphically as you remember. Games that are artistically sound to begin with look fine still. I played Elite Beat Agents again recently and it still looked as charming as I remembered.

Depends how long you need, but just don't pay those crazy $30+ prices some brands try to charge for them. If you have prime, amazonbasics has a few in the $5 range. Otherwise, almost any of those $2 ones from other sellers should be fine too.

 
Has anyone seen a sale price on Wind Waker HD or Pikmin 3? I saw that post listing Kmart as having Wind Waker HD for $39.99 but it never showed up when I checked tonight as it was always $49.99.

 
I'm looking to buy an xbox, do you guys think the $99 xbox at walmart will be super limited, the ad didn't seem to indicate that it would be instore only and the sale is from the 27-Dec 1st. I doubt any of you guys have the inside track on walmart but I just wanted to get someone else's opinion.

not really commenting on any of the other discussion but the XL definitely has weaker speakers. And no, it has nothing to with the surround sound setting, theyre just weaker. I guess the only plus is that they draw way less juice. Theres almost no difference in battery life using headphones vs not on the XL

Forget about $30, I've seen some HDMI cables for like $300. Anyone who is stupid enough to be suckered into that needs to be imprisoned for the safety of society.

Can anybody explain how TRU returns work? I'm looking at the site and found the "Buy Just Dance 14', get ANY one game 50% off" deal. In my cart, I have Just Dance 2014 for the 360 which is $39.99 and I added Forza 5 LE which is regularly $79.99, but now $39.99 because of the promotion. My total is now $79.98 so it's as if I'm getting Just Dance for free. My question now is, what would I get if I returned Just Dance and kept Forza? Would I get nothing back or would they split the price I paid and give me $40 back? I'm hoping for the latter because that'd be like a discount off the regular price of Forza 5 LE which would be great!

Also, I'm hoping this isn't return fraud. If it is then please let me know and I'm sorry for even bringing it up.

They definitely will not return half the money. They may require both items to return, or give you a reduced amount for your return of the non-discounted item. It almost certainly isn't worth doing, as a company like TRU would have their returns protocols engineered to prevent such shenanigans. Don't feel sorry for bringing it up; you're just a CAG tryin' to save some cash. I'll probably get flamed for this but I've never seen the moral/philosophical issue with SOME forms of "return fraud".

Thanks for the info! I too assumed TRU has some kind of system in place to avoid this type of thing. I figured they would deduct the savings when I return the game but that'd mean I return the game and they would give me nothing back. I found that scenario pretty strange so that's why I asked here. Looks like I'll now just end up buying both games for $80 and then trade Just Dance in to Best Buy whenever they have another 100% trade-in promo.

It's not return fraud. It's just never going to happen. You'll need to return both items. Return fraud would be going to walmart and doing a no receipt return (or exchange).

I just bought a RCA brand HDMI cable last week. It was...$5.70 or so at Lowe's. That's the normal price. Probably not "high-quality" but it works fine, so... :) Only 3ft for it, but realistically cables typically don't need to be longer.

There are a bunch of things Id like on BF but that bundle is the one thing I really want.

Anyone have an opinion on that Xbox 360 for 99 at walmart? I purchased a 360 at launch and had numerous rrod and a disk drive die on my before I finally sold the umpteenth refurbished console I received back and went for a PS3. So its been around 5 years of never playing any microsoft exclusives. Is this model worth it just for the exclusives (i won't be buying xbox live as I don't have the greatest internet where i live)? Same as the others models or any major differences? anyone have any problems with it?

I get that it's a 4gb but as i won't be downloading any games onto it, seems like that would suffice. Only would be getting it as a compliment console. Besides, planning on getting a ps4 in a year or so

:/ if you cannot afford the games on sale, just don't buy them. They always plunge in value these days. 4 months down the road whatever we see for $25 on black Friday will be $15 or less, yo. stores are expecting big losses to begin with so don't try to pull fraud before they decide to get your face off the video footage then throw you in a cell with very horny cue ball named big bubba

The newer 360s do not have RROD anymore. Haven't heard of any wideswept issues with the newer models so you should be fine. I got a Slim when they first came out (2010) and have had no problems with it; still running fine (with the older "fat" 360s I got RROD three times).

The only caveat is that 4gb may not be enough depending on what games you plan to get so you might need a usb drive (even if you don't download games via Live, even if you don't manually install games and play off the HD, because some of the newer games require/prefer you to do some sort of install).

I honestly don't think there's any game deals I need now, I'd like Last of Us for $25 but with my backlog by the time I get to it it'd be $20 anyway....
 
I thought I saw a 34.99 Xbox Live 12 month gold card advertised for BF somewhere.  Where was it?  Was it Target?  Is that the lowest anyone has seen?
