Fallout: New Vegas - Gen. Discussion & Info

I can't fucking wait to see the complaint list this time...
Just for the record, not complainin', just reporting heh

I was kind of lukewarm about any more of this game. I still haven't even beaten the main game. But Dead Money looks like it could be interesting.

As far as a discussion before about shops and getting good equipment, I second the notion that your best bet is just to find unique weapons. They are great and obviously don't cost you anything. I know I've sang the virtues of this weapon a million times, but Oh, Baby! is your best friend, especially if your character is geared towards melee. Hell, mine was more balanced, and it still kicked ass using it.
Gun Runners is about the only shop worth a damn, but your 7k won't get you much. I have 30k caps and I don't shop there.

Your best bet is to find unique weapons in the wasteland. There are so many out there of each type. The unique plasma weapons are great. I currently shoot with the All American, and an upgraded hunting rifle for long range. I don't really need much else unless I'm fighting Deathclaws.
Theres also the Silver something energy weapons place, right near the Atomic Wrangler.

I went in there with a Stealth Boy, aka my 100% off coupon, and cleaned them out. It was funny to watch them all just stand there clueless as items dissapeared right in front of them.

Honestly, everything in there sucks. There are 3 unique plasma or laser rifles that destroy all.

If you go to the very bottom of the map, there is a crashed vertibird. You'll have to fight like 20 robots, but there is a nice unique there. Pew Pew or the Pulse Gun are badass against these robots though. Pulse Gun takes one single shot to take down most Mr. Cutsy's and the sentry bots. The AER14 prototype is in Vault 22 and is great as well.
I use the Q-35.. is that not very good?
Lower damage than a regular plasma rifle, but reloads faster. Better critical though... Still using YCS if I go plasma.

Holy shit that trailer was better than the entire damn game. God, if only the real game wasnt so boring and broken the first time around I would have kept it long enough to experience that DLC.

Ah well, I will watch a speed run or something on it later.

I don't really use energy/plasma weapons so I wasn't sure. There is a helluva lot of ammo for those weapons in there at the very least.

I do have the AER14 and the Q35. I still need to make my way down to that vertibird.

I mainly use this unique sniper rifle that I found near that Legion camp on the water where they take you to Ceasars camp on that boat/raft. I found the lockbox it's in early in the game, but had to up my lockpick skills and come back to get it much later. I'm very glad I remembered to go back for it!

I rarely go energy and just by collecting random ammo (and never purchasing it), I have over 3000 available shots for the plasma rifles. I found that amusing really.

The patch is a mixed bag for me still. Several quests won't finish. I noticed that ED-E FINALLY shows that he's upgraded and is shooting a blue laser. I've seen a few crouching graphical glitches when having the anti-material rifle equipped. Other than that, things are pretty good. On the advice of a few others in here, I went in to the quarry and completely destroyed all deathclaws in a matter of seconds with the AM rifle. It was a joke really.

It seems to me that ED-E is now firing alien energy cells... anyone agree?

I've already done so much in the game I don't know what else to do.. lately I've been just discovering and exploring new locations... hmmm... I guess I can look up quests I haven't done yet.

I'm not too excited about the DLC after watching that trailer. It looks like it will be an "Operation Anchorage"-esque DLC. By that I mean that it looks like it will be a linear, 3-5 hour expansion with no replay value. I'll wait for some reviews before biting.

Yes. His laser now zaps people in to piles of dust. It's odd.

I lost Ed-E somewhere, was with me one day and the next gone.....oh well I like Rex better, but I do have an Ed-E quest I have to do eventually.

Cannot put this game off any longer. I was trying to finish Prince of Persia first, but I will get the update(s) tonight, and put some time in.

Rex fucking blows. Trust me on that one. He's slow, gets knocked out way too easily, and is generally useless except in close quarters.

Yea I had Rex most of the game... only got ED-E recently.. I think before the patch they both sucked donkey dicks but now ED-E is a monster.

With upgraded EDE and Boone in your party, you never have to draw a weapon again.

I actually leave Boone in Novac sometimes because he's too good. He pops the heads off of enemies before I even see them.

Boone is sick too.. I was experimenting with whether or not I could equip followers with the Alien Blaster but could never get it.. Also I keep all my friends at Lucky 38 so we can have sexy parties. :D

Boone is definitely in the Fawkes tier of companions in NV which is why I rarely use him. Plus he sort of has the personality of a dry mop and his persistent urge to attack Legion on sight got old real quick.

I can't wait until DM w/ the patch next week. I think I'm going to create a new profile for it when I get a chance on Monday. How have you melee specialists fared in NV? I've always wanted to try one myself but my enthusiasm for it usually fizzled midway through the game. I'm a V.A.T.S. whore so a lot of the gun related perks in FO spoiled me in worst way. I might follow through with a shotgun and explosive run-through if I can't find anything interesting to use.

Haven't used VATS in this game at all.
Did i miss something by not using it?

I can recommend the use of the ballistic fist. Problem is, you don't get it early on, more half way through. Can't even remember where i got it.
One of the best weapons in the game.
Others you might want to use is the Gobi rifle.
I have not used any energy weapon so far, though i need to for the achievement.

Joke post? How can you play this game and not use VATS? Especially since you say you never used energy weapons and use melee. I don't even know how much ammo you've wasted by not using VATS.

No, thats how i played it.
As for ammo concern, i had enough ammo to sell my ammo.
I did use it in FO3, but not with this game. Wasn't planed, just never did.

I like to use Bloody Mess (is it still called that?) + Meltdown + VATS. Makes things look cool... I tend to get perks that don't make much a difference in terms of game play and are usually aesthetic or beneficial for exploration.. one of my favorites perks is actually Light Step or something like that.. all it does is make you run 10% faster haha

I wonder if there's anyway to supplement the 500 or so MS points I already have for Dead Money or if I have to buy a whole 1600 point increment.

As you can read in my post above I did find some Ballistic fists and I used them to
punch Caesar and his entire guard to death. Punched out the entire Brotherhood of Steel. And used fisticuffs throughout the endgame to kill the Legion's shogunate. It's a ridiculously powerful weapon. I think my unarmed was 20 or so. Played on Normal[Hardcore]

Wasn't able to do that. I think my skill were to low.
how were you able to do that? There are 7 dudes coming out. I had to use mines and fatman to kill them. Even Boone died. But congrats. :)

The Ballistic fist is crazy powerful. I don't use it on my character, because he's set up a sniper, but I have Boone using one. One hit kills everything short of a Deathclaw.

On another note, has anyone noticed more hard freezes with the new patch? 30+ hours of play before the patch and I had only 1 hard freeze. 4 hours after the patch and I've already had 3.

No freezes here at all. I did have the poisoning sound effect loop for 10 minutes though...

Does anyone else decorate their safehouses? I'm based out of Novac, and I like to display some of the stuff I collect in game. I put the rarer Nuka Colas on top of the desk, I keep the bathtub full of empty whiskey bottles, and cover the bed with Teddy Bears, etc. I also leave some of the cooler looking weapons lying around so I can see them.

I loved the different stuff you could do in your Megaton house in FO3 and wish they had carried that over to this game.

Yeah I agree, though I haven't done much with my Novac abode. That motel room is too dark for me to really care what's lying around. Are there any better safehouses for customizing how it looks?

There are no customization options in FONV. You'll get better safehouses on the Vegas Strip at the Lucky 38, but you still can't do anything with them but drop items.

No I don't decorate... although I do think that the Gannon family armor is SWEET looking. I actually just use Neil's Shack as my home base... since there's a bed right there you don't have to deal with loading times opening doors and stuff.

Ran into the Deathclaws.....they suck! I took someone's advice and I got the Multi-something rifle and that does work, but the reload sucks on it and I can't reload without them rushing me and hitting me one time and bam dead. I went and picked Boone back up and I still have Rex with me and still getting massacared.

Rex is your problem. With ED-E upgraded, Boone, and your Anti-Material rifle, the deathclaws shouldn't even get close. If you sneak up on the deathclaws, you usually can kill them with one shot to the head with that rifle.

I lost Ed-E is he back with Nash? I will go check on that, see I think Rex is a badass, but I will try it your way especially with the Deathclaws.

ED-E should be in Primm, but will be a marker on your map regardless.

The problem I have with Rex is multi-fold. His hit points are too low. He ALWAYS gets knocked out in a short amount of time when fighting anything worthwhile. He has no real attack from a distance. Even in close quarters, two hits and he's back on the ground. He might be able to knock things over, but I'd rather take them out from a distance than to even let them get within 30 feet of where I'm standing. But hey, whatever works for you.

When it comes to Deathclaws, I will take your advice, will let ya know....thanks

So I think Dead Money comes out tomorrow.. any of you folks know the best place to get XBL points and time? 4000/1600 points whatever.. and preferably a year of time? Is ebay my best bet?

Your only deal on points this week is Target for something like $18.79 in store.

Time wise? Once you find a deal on that, let me know as well.

Dude my unarmed was 80 when I did the same shit. 1 hit kills ftw. I was so happy that they made unarmed useful in FONV.

Enlist Lily Bowen from Jacobstown. She seems to be the toughest companion of the bunch. She's a nightkin super mutant after all.

Has anyone found out a good "character planner" online? so you can goof around with stats and perks and kind of plan your character in advance before you sit down to play? I improvised my previous character but I'd like to plan my next "thorough" playthrough a little more.

Got dead money. It activates via a radio station, similar to past DLC in game. Sierra Madre appears along with a notice that the level cap is increased.

I can finally start enjoying this again!
