The good-old games of GOG are often hard to find and/or difficult to get working on modern machines. Many of them would warrant news of their release included in the 'Deals' forum; some would not. Therefore this thread proposes to be the compact depository of information regarding of classic games from GOG.com, as well as discussion concerning their deal-worthiness.

Special sales and promotions will continue to have their own threads.
Oh cool. I played the heck out of Wing Commander 3 on my 3DO so I never grabbed it for the PC. I wonder how they compare?

Thanks for the heads-up. I may have to grab it.
I played through it both ways-first on the 3DO, then on PC.

The PC one is way better (although it was awesome the 3DO got it!) It's higher resolution, and there's a TON of stuff in the 3DO one that's done with flat sprites, that's polygonal on PC, like as I recall when you're landing on/dealing with a carrier on the 3DO, it's just a sprite, while on PC you actually fly into it.

I'm wondering...do you think this can be played with just a keyboard and mouse? Back in the day of course I had a joystick, but I haven't bothered with one for over a decade...hmm...maybe an Xbox controller + keyboard, somehow?

Wing Commander 3 and even more 4 were IMO the pinnacle of the space combat sim. Amazing technology for the time, fantastic gameplay and stories. Mark Hamil did an awesome job (although with the quality of cast they have, I was always dumbfounded that Wing Commander movie didn't just basically do WC 3 or 4 as a movie with the same cast...instead of a bunch of 12 year olds who can't act).

I remember some really awesome moments in these games, probably especially in 4, where I'm rearranging my limited power to various shields while trying to just barely stay ahead of a whole fleet coming after me :D

I would say that Freespace 2 was probably the best space flight sim engine / game.

I liked the Wing Commander storyline better than everything else though.

I suppose you could use a controller with a remapping program.

KB+M is already built in to WC3. See this quick reference card (also included in the GOG release) from the excellent WC Combat Information Center.

Star Control 3 $5.99

The Star Control melange of diplomatic adventuring and strategy is back for this third and final entry in the series (though the adventure aspects have been brought further to the fore) as development was handed off to Legend Entertainment (Spellcasting, The Wheel of Time, Unreal II). With the Ur-Quan menace resolved, you lead a coalition to investigate a disturbance in a far-off quadrant which may threaten the entire universe.

Has anyone picked up NoX yet since they put it up? Wondering how well it holds up...I remember dabbling in it at the time, but I liked Diablo too much to play NoX much.
Ah cool! I never played this because it was a different developer, but what the heck, I'm buying it!
You wont be disappointed. I thought the game was great.

SC3 (at the time) felt weird being that in SC2 you were fighting the Urquan and now they are an Ally. The enemies you fight make up for it though so you wont be sitting without someone comming after you for long. The Quandrant your in feels for some reason smaller than the one in SC2, then again I havent played the game since it first came out so maybe it was the monitor vs the TV screen (on 3DO). At the time, I gave the nod to SC2 as the better overall game, although I was by no means disappointed with SC3. The biggest difference I can remember is that when your talking to species at the view screen the aliens look more real since in 2 they were just cartoons. So, like I said its a great game and you'll like it if your a SC fan.

I gotta get both of these games (again) even though I have WC3 on 3DO I want to check out the PC version.

I wish they'd come out with SPACE HULK: Vengeance of the Blood Angels of course I have no idea if the PC is as good as the 3DO version. I know the PS1 had it too but I think when I played that version I still preferred the 3DO version for some reason I cant remember now.

If ANYONE from GOG visits here please get SPACE HULK from EA. The recent release of Space Marine was cool but Space Hulk should be brought back...

"Bethor! Get out of my way!"

The melee combat in Space Hulk was sooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad and annoying. Everything else was fantastic but that important element was quite broken. I eventually resorted to cheats just so I could see the end of the game.

But ya know, Space Hulk was actually a Warhammer game, and they do still make those, even if they lost the horror element.

Also, whoo hoo @ StarCon 3 coming out on GOG. Loved part 2 on 3DO as well. Guess we're the 3DO club here at CAG!

Wow. Star control 2 brings back memories. I remember playing this a lot along with Dune. Never play SC3.

Was that as good or better then SC2?

I just finished buying/downloading Star Control 3 and Wing Commander 3 :D

SC3 I'm pretty excited about trying for the first time, though....it of course goes into my endless backlog OF DOOM.

Man, I've bought 63 games from GOG so far

I thought it wasnt too bad. At least on the 3DO. Although I noticed it was more of a percentage thing it felt like, the more you blew through them that way the more the odds were youd fail the next time.

You wanted to time the first strike at you with a block and then swing at them since swinging first usually meant you'd miss and be open to a quick death. Of course if youve got 2 or more right in your face youd have to quickly punch them, block - then punch, then punch (quick way of dispatching three). It was never a perfect synch since no matter how well youd time it, sometimes, they were going to crush you, period. Which is why I loved it because DEATH was around every corner like it should be in an ALIENS type game.

I actually believe that THIS game, the claustraphobic atmosphere (especially since your armor is so huge and the corridors of the ship offer no mercy) and the ticking of your motion tracker are as close to an actual Aliens game as they've gotten (despite the great AliensvsPredator games that have come out for PC).

You had to position your squad tactfully to cover your ass or else you'd be toast real quick. So it was tactics and not just FPS play.

Nothing was worse than hearing your squad scream and die horribly and then seeing yourself alone with a ton of genestealers comming for you to send you to your doom.

Here's a video of a level for those that have never seen the game at all. (remember this game is close to 20 years old so keep that in mind before you hate on it too much ;))

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOFdKSdZq4w&feature=related

Was it sort of an FPS by EA? I *think* remember of it, possibly even played a demo for it, but I didn't have a decent PC back then (not until '97) and didn't own it for my 3DO.

Is it wrong that I think that sreenshot for the video looks really cool? it looks as awesome as I remember it looking.

I agree with everything except for the melee combat issue. Yes, it was terrifying because of how deadly the enemies were. But it sucked to be far into a mission and lose one or more of your guys because meleeing is just completely random. Yeah, it's just random IMO, which is not good game design, though it sort of recreates a real-life RPG's dice-rolls (under the hood). Did you really beat the whole game on your own without cheats? Due to the melee issue, the game eventually got too hard for me.

If you already had Operation Flashpoint on your GOG account (which GOG previously warned could have been removed at any time.) ...

Good News: You now have a copy of ArmA: CWA

Bad News: The Codemasters-developed Red Hammer expansion has not survived the transition.

Eh Red Hammer isn't that great anyways and there are much, much better user made Russian campaigns (It still sucks that they still had to remove it though)

The Retaliation Russian campaign is great. The very first mission can be a PITA but rest of the campaign is very well made and fits in nicely into the Cold War Crisis and Resistance story line.

Of course it being so old I'm having a heck of a time trying to find a proper download link of it, especially the version with English subtitles. None of the download links seem to work (firefront one is dead).

OFP definitely ranks up there as my top two favorite games of all time next to Deus Ex. I spent so much time playing with addons and missions; it was infinite fun. The original CWC and Resistance single player campaigns IMO are still way better then anything Bohemia has ever produced for the Arma sereis.

Hmm, interested in ArmA: CWA, but never even heard of it. Would it be fair to compare it to an early CoD or Battlefield, or no? Trying to get an idea of what to expect in the way of how good it is to see if it'd be better to wait for a sale.

ArmA games are very realistic military simulators at heart, the campaign is more of a feature added to call it a game. The real fun to be had is creating missions of your own that you can play out with your friends. My friend got me into it, and I'd have to say it's one of the best war/military games that I've played simply for the realism it brings to the table and the very large-scale battles that you can experience (YouTube it), if you computer can handle it.

It also has a VERY large modding community, which even for the originals, is still active to this day. A lot of content, and a great game overall, but I personally don't buy games unless they're on sale, even if it's only a 10% discount. Something inside of me doesn't feel comfortable buying something at full price, even if the $5.99 isn't really full price with respect to everywhere else, it's still full price at GOG. Hope this helps. :)

Forgive my extreme laziness and unwillingness to start a new thread, but GOG's having a sale on Dungeons & Dragons games to celebrate their third anniversary. The interesting (and in my opinion, lame) part is that the discounts work on a previously unexplored scale for GOG; the more games you buy, the greater the discounts. One being 20% off, all nine being 60% off.

Any idea what the nine games would be? I only see the three listed in the post. Would Arcanum be in there? Are there any D&D games that have turn-based combat akin to playing the game in real life?

Hmm...the only games of those 9 I don't own are Dragonshard and Demon Stone. Both look sort of interesting...do I bite? I'm thinking of getting Nox also, though I don't know why

Wow, it's been three years already?!? Well, that might explain why I have such a huge library on there

I don't think the discount thing is lame. It's similar to what they've often done before, except more granular, which sort of makes it better. Plus what's neat is if you already have some of the games, it gives you all the discounts for all the games you already have, as though you were buying them.

It turns out I've already bought all but 4 of those-and so like I still get a 55% discount if I buy three more, which is cool.

Click the "new promo system" link and it takes you to a page with all of them. Awesomely, it includes Bioware's stuff.

Dang...I forgot that I bought Icewind Dale II also...

Seriously my backlog was bad BEFORE GOG. Now...it is...really, really bad.

Can you gift parts of the pack? In true CAG form, we may want to form up some groups to maximize the discount. If we can find people who collectively want the full set, we could all get 60% off instead of the smaller individiual discounts.
how did I not know that Broken Sword 4 even existed before now?
It had a really low-key release, and is the only game in the series that had no console version. I didn't have a computer that could play it when it came out... now I do, and I'm really looking forward to spending some more time with George and Nico. And this blonde woman.
