The time has come to bid our preferred format farewell. An unfortunate but obvious conclusion to the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray battle is that one of them would have to get buried in the end. I was happy to see many dual-format owners say that they preferred HD DVD, and even now the format offers some features that Blu-Ray is still catching up with.

Although the manufacturing of new players has come to a close, Toshiba will continue to support and service current players for the next several years.

The original HD DVD thread can still be found here and does have some helpful information here and there and was quite useful during the format's life. However, as it approached the 4500 post mark, it's clear that this is as good a time as any to start fresh.

I'll wait for it to come in before celebrating but still :bouncy:
From where?
just ordered the last hd dvd i wanted to buy, guess i'm done unless caddyshack drops to $10

:(

got 143 movies and 13 more in the mail
I'm sure you could pick up Caddyshack for $10 used.

I'm currently at 103 with 4 in the mail, 2 preordered, 3 I need to trade off for more and like 10+ I need to buy.

After that, I guess I'm back to renting DVD until I can save enough money up. :whistle2:#

Used from a different forum.
You're a bit lat to be looking for players, really, many of the good deals are almost gone. Best Buy had the Toshiba A35 for $149 but they're basically gone (Amazon stocks them at $299! after weeks at $230ish-- they were the highest end 3rd gen player). At best you might find a few A30's for around $120, not bad players at all. If you happen to find any of the 2nd generation units (A2/A20/XA2) they seem to be the most dependable in terms of playing discs without problems, etc. The 3rd generation seems a bit glitchier about reading discs well (Not saying they're bad-- they probably would've been fine with a few more firmware updates, but I doubt we'll see those now!)
i see players still at stores, but even if I don't get once it's not a big deal. i do at least have a 360 add on.

the thing is i'd much prefer a quality stand alone. i will take your advice though, i would like to see if i can find an A35. otherwise, an A30 or something.

I'm still waiting for a good deal on a standalone myself. I love my 360 addon tho, but I'd like to a. upgrade my living room DVD player, and b. Be able to watch my HD DVDs without moving my system.

i check my amazon wish list twice a day and the lowest i've seen it was $11, but then $3 for shipping

got spoiled with amazon prime, i expect everything to be delivered next day and for free now ha. maybe they'll be a copy at CC 50% off sale, as long as its not 50% off of MSRP

this bee movie thing at fye sucks, i put in an order for 4 which was about ~$120. They charged my debit card about 2 weeks ago, I send them an email yesterday saying it doesn't look like it's going to ship could I get a refund. They say it's not canceled and they expect it to come soon or I could get the money back as FYE credit instead of charged back to my debit card.

Guess good thing I shop there a lot or would be pissed.
german t2 review up at HDD

http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/681/terminator2_ge.html

claims its close to the blu ray, which i disagree with if its really the same as the france in terms of quality

quiz mode/spy mode in german only which stinks
I think that review is also mistaken when it says it has both the theatrical and director's cut on it.

The trailer specifically said it was the director's cut.

Edit: No no, it says "...which utilizes material from both the theatrical cut and extended version masters...". He is still wrong about the Blu ray tho. The PQ on that is quite horrible, let alone it being a barebones theatrical release, in MPEG2.

The UK/French/Australian/Netherlands version is slightly superior in PQ but lacking any and all features. I have the UK one being shipped to me currently, but I'd like to still get the German release.
A guy at AVS forum posted the official memo from BestBuy that says they are to pull HD DVDs from shelves Wed 3/26.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1011397

One guy said HD has already been pulled from his local store.

Another said he spoke to the manager who did a manual override and gave him a bunch of discs at 30% off and then another 50%. So if you are a haggler, you might want to give it a shot.

Sadness....looks like I'm checking after class, thanks for the headsup.

I need to run over to BB anyway to pick up Gone Baby Gone, so I'll see what I can scare up when I'm over there. Sucks that they're pulling it so quickly. I guess they're planning on getting something back from the studios and Toshiba if they send them back and not sell them at a loss.

looks like I may spend my $10 in rewards today, instead of when my $100 GC comes for the two drives I bought....

Oh well I will post back with what I find.

Stardust, Pans?

I'm surprised they didn't pull them the second the death was announced, as is their policy with GH/PH games.

Maybe I'll go over there today, but most likely not. Munch is sending me Blade Runner, but I think that's it for me in the HD spectrum.
Edit: No no, it says "...which utilizes material from both the theatrical cut and extended version masters..."
Nope.

On top of that, Kinowelt/Imagion present 'T2' on this HD DVD in both the theatrical and director's cut versions (both are provided via seamless branching), so this is truly a "hodgepodge" of a release.

but they updated it

(Note: The disc's menus are confusing -- there is an option on the disc to select the "Director's Cut", implying that not selecting the option would result in playback of the theatrical cut of 'T2." However, as most of descriptive text on the disc is in German, we've since receive confirmation from Kinowelt that the disc in fact only contains the Director's Cut.)

Managed to get Pitch Black for around 7 dollars, its priced on BB.com for 10.40 or so, and got them to match that price and take off the 30%. Pretty good deal to me.

143!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Jeez... and I thought I was overdoing it with my 3 that came with my players, 5 through the mail and 10 ordered from DD for just over $100, only ones over $15 I am getting are Blade Runner, Hot Fuzz and 2001. If I see a hot deal on Transformers or Zodiac I will pick them up too.

So no more HD DVDs available at Best Buy stores frorom now on? I thought I'd have more than a month to clean up on these movies(picked up my player at the end of Feb). Looks like we might be at the 2 minute warning at retail stores for HD DVD titles.

Just got back from my Best Buy. They denounced the HD-DVD being taken away tomorrow, but matched the printed out 50% off Circuit City ad from next week (that I had printed out) on top of the already announced 30% off. In the end I got the following

Title / Reg Price / Rung-Up Price

Clockwork Orange / 24.99 / 8.74
The Aviator / 24.99 / 8.74
The Kingdom / 29.99 / 10.49
The Shining / 24.99 / 8.74
2001:Space Oddy. / 24.99 / 8.74
Atonement / 29.99 / 10.49
King of California / 29.99 / 8.74
Goodfellas / 24.99 / 8.74
Casino / 24.99 / 8.74
License to Wed / 34.99 / 12.24
Ocean's Trilogy / 69.99 / 24.49
Star Trek:Original / 179.95 / 62.99

The reg price is as listed on the sticker on the front of the box. I was really lucky to get all of those movies at such a discount and the only one I am thinking of returning is Star Trek, seeing as I'm not really a trekky but just wanted to check it out for the first time.

Definitely YMMV, but I recommend getting the 50% off ad from next week and seeing if your BB will price match it if they aren't losing theirs tomorrow (like mine supposedly isn't).

*Edit* The CC Ad that I speak of can be found at http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i160/shimey00/ccity.jpg

What the fuck? You guys have cool Best Buy stores. Mine would only do 40% off INSTEAD of 30% off. If that was 40% off from the 30% off price, it'd be a good deal.

Fine, you fucking asshole Best Buy jerks. Was gonna give you a good $130 for some movies, help you move some product, but you go ahead and lose your fucking money shipping it back. No skin off my back. I'll buy more when they drop further on DD.com or Amazon.

If you are on the west coast and can still make it, might be worth heading to your Best Buy to see if they are losing theirs... At mine, I asked for a manager and when he came over, I asked if they'd do 50% off of the BSG Season 1 ($99.99) he said that tonight he could do 50% on any of the box sets. I asked about single-discs and he said they'd have to stick to 30% on those... Still 3 BSGs for $150 was nice... Better than Amazon (which seems to still have most of the best prices)...

Thanks for the heads-up whoever mentioned the death of HD at BB and the usefulness of managers... Go if you still can!

Wish I would have known about best buy sending them all back. I was up there today and would have tried to get a deal on some of them. I'm sure you can get better deals on DD.com and Amazon.com so I would try to talk them into prices around them sites.

I knew Best Buy was not going to do some sort of fire sale and I have said it from around day one of the HD-DVD death. I just thought they would sell till they ran out and send what little they had left back but the one here still has most of their stock. I thought they would atleast go down to 60% off at some point.

My BB got rid of about 90% of their stock. They left some random library titles, Sopranos, and then had a full endcap with the recent releases of HD-DVD all on sale at the previously discussed 30% off. I saw them boxing things up all with an address of a BB warehouse.

Just got The Last Starfighter from DD.com. When I ordered it nothing said combo disc and when I opened it today on the front on the top it says Combo Format. When I opened the case the disc is a normal one sided disc. Anyone else have this happen where they ordered a dics that did not say combo format and was put in a case that says combo format but the disc is normal?

The Best Buy I called had at least one clown. I called and the operator said she went and checked and saw all of their HD-DVDs. She didn't seem to know any details about the possible 30 percent so I asked to be transferred to the movies department. The dude there said they were already sent back.

That's normal, they apparently decided at the last possible second to not have it be a combo disc. AFAIK they're all like that.
Anybody in the Las Vegas area check the Best Buys?
Shit i'm off to work now. I'll check on the way home in a few hours. I still need my Pan's Labrynth and 2001!

I noticed that when I opened mine... kind of a let down... surprised it was not recalled like the Jack Ryan collection

Westwood CA is totally out of HD-DVDs except for one 3-pack I stashed away that they didn't find. ;) (I wasn't sure if I wanted to buy it) I expected it but was still surprised as they told me yesterday they'd have them til the end of the month.

I'm glad it was not a combo. Just thought it was odd that it was in a combo case and started to get pissed till I looked and saw it was not a combo disc.

I would think they would. You might even get it for less then the normal price - the 30% off. You could end up with geting around 70% off the normal price. Or they could tell you it is no longer in the system and then they will keep it to send it back.

Ok, is it just me or...
The Best Buy site list HD Dvd's still but none are available for instore pick up anymore. I understand this is the old news, but i went to circuit city.com, who is having the sale starting Sunday on HD Dvd's, and their site shows all movies are only available through the website. Are they packing theirs up from the stores before the weekend too? Lame ad then if there will be none in store.
Will scout the closest one to me later today

Circuit City has never allowed games/movies/music to be picked up in the store from the website.

There should have been a third party group that came into the stores and grabbed all the hd-dvds off the floor and staged in the back. We were told to hold them till this weekend and throw the remaining in a dumpbin for the 50% off. SO if you go in there today and dont see any hd-dvds then they are holding them back.

So wait, why would their be remainders in a dump bin? Cause I saw the bin at mine(Rego Park), but just assumed that was what they had left.

You're talking about CC, right? They cleaned them out at mine. They must be out back. Sunday they're putting them back on the floor and in the bin?

If you look close, you can see Robert Patricks ding dong.

Terminator 2 on HD DVD is so awesome. #16.

Went by my local Best Buy on Tuesday, still had their HD-DVD's up. Nothing that impressive, even with the 30% off.

Today, went back, all gone, and the BR's were all strewn through the sections that the HD-DVDs were in.

I checked the local store here last night and they were all gone, the clerk at the front said they were in the back for a 'big sale' Sunday. Don't know if it will even be worth a trip across town Sunday morning to check it out.
