This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it was getting very close to the 5,000 thread mark, I figured it was time for a reset.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions.


Games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

Apple Game Center
Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games are starting to support this. Currently this only runs on iPod & iPhone, but an update will be coming soon that enables this for iPad users.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center Exchange Thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs. You can also exchange OpenFeint & Plus+ names there.

ITUNES GIFT CARD SALES
Gamestop: 6/8 to 6/14, $25 iTunes gift card for $20

Important Notes:

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.

6. Apps can be re-downloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.

7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

9. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

11. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Wow, Rage HD is 747MB! I know that's small compared to some of the PSN stuff but I think 15MB is the biggest iOS thing I've downloaded before now ;-)

Infinity Blade is close to 1 GB -- it clocks it somewhere around 960 MB, if memory serves.

EDIT: Or...hrmm...I would've sworn that's what my iPod touch reported. iTunes shows it as 585 MB.

EDIT 2: In for Real Racing HD. Thanks for the heads up.

All the games listed in this specific post are games made by EA. Firemint is owned by EA, too. Also, I'm waiting on the EA-fication of Firemint to bring down their games to $1, too. Soon. Prices are already steadily dropping during sales during the last few sales, especially after EA bought them and began putting their games on sale more often than before.

How long before EA has Real Racing 2 HD for sale at $1? Not long at this rate...

They really must make a lot of money when they drop their prices to $1. They probably sell a ton of copies to people who don't really want to play the game... like the huge steam summer sales.

Well it's like anything digital; you can sell 1 person something for $20, or 20 people something for $1. You make the same either way, but the latter generally creates more sales.

I think your correct, cause I will buy $1 games even if Im hardly slightly interested.....but $5+ games, I really have to be extremely interested to purchased it

I know a lot of games now take up a ton of space. With all of my apps, games, and about 5 movies my 64gb iPad (1st gen) is almost full. Sooo glad I went for the largest one. I've gotten a ton of use out of it.
 
Scream 'N' Run and Blood Fever are both FREE for today only in celebration of the illustrator's birthday. I don't know about the gameplay, but the artwork looks good.

Eh, never played a Sims game, but free is free. I'll give it a whirl at some point, at least I'll have it if I want to try it.

I'm reading the reviews. It is the cheapest it's ever been on discount as far as I can tell. But I've already got Splashtop and everyAir. Still, every once in a while I'll see LogMeIn ignition held up as a gold standard, so I'm considering...

Yeah, I was also noticing that it's the cheapest ever, but still, it seems a bit high... but I kinda doubt they will drop it even further.

I've been slowly switching all my pc's to Team Viewer, as their app is free.

If you pay for logmein, than this is fine. But for a free solution, Team Viewer works fine.

You do not have to pay $70 to use the app or any of the features within it.
 
While you guys are on the subject of pricing and remote apps... Might I suggest iTap RDP. I have had great success using it. It doesn't require installing any program on any computer as it uses the built in windows remote protocol. It's also only like $12.

Also, thanks for the heads up on the sims 3. Always wanted to try out a sims game on the ios but my curiosity never justifies the price.
 
AccordIng to the email I just got from EA, the other 2 sims games will be $1 as well. Ambitions drops pretty regularly, but the sims 3 doesnt drop to a buck often.

+1 for Splashtop. Very inexpensive, while not as robust as LogMeIn, it handles all my needs. That being said, $15 is a very good price if you've been on the fence.
 
Haven't used splashtop extensively. But can you login to a computer when you're, say, mobile off network on your iPad? Couldn't find details on this

I think it can if you register your gmail account for it. Apparently it discovers devices outside your network like this.
 
Not a deal on an app, but if you have Dead Space today you're entitled to a free DLC download of 2 power nodes from the in app purchase menu.

The recently-released Hippie Hippo is also currently available for FREE. It's garnered 125 5-star reviews in the 5 days since its introduction, so it might be worth a download.

Also, it feels vaguely unfair. All other app developers are limited to 100 promo codes per release, but shazam is allowed targeted freebies?

Yep... First time for an app. It does seem like they're making some changes to the program. They're also working on some e-book/iBook promos as well.

Beginning next Tuesday the "App Pick of the week" will be Firemint's Spy Mouse.

I did a quick google search and find that this news was dated on the 17th... making it last week. If this is a weekly thing, is this free Shazan Encore still going on? Or has it been replaced with another app for this week?
