CAGiversary!

Since the old thread was getting too large, I made this new thread to continue.

Apple iPhone & iPod Touch games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

Important Notes:

 1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iPod\iPhone. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
 2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
 3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
 4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
 5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
 6. Apps can be redownloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
 7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
 8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support site. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
 9. If you somehow break your iPhone or iPod Touch, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try these sites for do it yourself replacement parts & fixes.

They will check to see if there is any water damage by some sensor. Worst case scenario is a $199 charge for a replacement iPhone.
To counter all of Canabalt's rampaging fanboys (Tip: Try the flash game. It's still free. See if you'll actually like it first.), I'd say if you want a timesink, I Dig It is a good way to go. It is a much more polished version of the flash game Motherlode.

ALSO SCREW YOU PEGGLE IS BETTER THAN SEX
Haha, if you say so. I tried the free flash Canabalt for about five minutes and got bored, so no dice. Do FPS translate well on iTouch? How is the old school Doom or Wolfenstein 3D? I could see those as being good games to just pew pew for a few minutes.
Does anyone have experience with apple care? I actually purchased this a month or so ago as a deal with my wife's new phone upgrade. It might save my ass but want to know if "washing machine" is covered under the warranty?
If any one of the 2 water indicators is red then your warranty is worthless.....they are white and turn red when wet. They are located in the bottom port and in the headphone jack

Wolfenstein is great. I don't have Doom yet, but it's on the list. However, take my suggestions with a grain of salt, because I rather like Canabalt and think it was worth the price. :)
Still waiting on a much needed (temporary, at least) price drop on: Ravensword, Canabalt, and Sandstorm Modern Warfare
MW is whwat I'm waiting for! Now!

How do the controls work? Christmas will be my first experience with touch gaming, so I've no idea what to expect.

Cosign on Zen Bound. It's the iPhone's answer to PS3's Flower. I've been waiting for this price drop for a long time. I'm pretty sure several games and apps on the rewind 2009 list will go on sale at least for a bit.

There's a bunch of different options, but the one I like is to have forward/back/turn-left/turn-right as a stick-like control on the left side of the screen, and you tilt right/left to sidestep right/left. Fire is a button on the right. You cycle through your weapons by tapping your weapon on-screen (your hands). Works great!

Ha, sweet. I'll pick it up for sure, thanks!

Thanks for those! Going to give Dragon Dictation a try today .
Do we know if the $1.99 is a temporary sale or a permanent price cut?
Would assume that it's temp.
Do we know if the $1.99 is a temporary sale or a permanent price cut?
Would it matter? If you want it, 1.99 is a price you can't beat. Buy it ASAP. If it stays at 1.99 then it stays there. If it goes back up, then you got a deal. I doubt this will ever be 99 cents but it is possible. You can try to hold out for a buck...but I'd just buy it now if you haven't already. If you're into it anyway. Try the demo first of course.

Robocalypse is a fun, frantic RTS for the Iphone that was a port of the DS game of the same name. Got great reviews on both platforms, and it's only 99 cents AND has a Lite version. You have very little excuse not to pick this one up.

Mirror's Edge looks nice. Apparently someone still believes in the IP, and any step away from the console game's awful first person platforming is a good one. I'll give it a watch.

I'll be in for Pac Man:CE as a day one buy. That crap was so much fun on XBLA.

Zen Bound is decent but I was unimpressed by the demo.

Fair enough. I asked because I don't get my Touch til Saturday and can't try the demo. But I read enough reviews and plunked down the 2 bucks.

Anyone check out House MD yet? Gameplay looks very odd, but I love the show. Busy with Spelltris and Mystery Mania right now, or I'd probably jump on it.

Might bite on Zenbound, but having only owned my iPhone since Friday I'm a bit overwhelmed on all the free stuff

OMG Pirates! just came out for $1.99 and I'm having a lot of fun. From the creators of Zombieville, which I haven't tried yet. They remind me of Castle Crashers and Aliem Hominid.

1: Mirror's Edge on the iPod? Cool! Where? I don't see it. Are you talking about Canabalt?
2: HOW DARE YOU?
...
Seriously, though, Mirror's Edge was great. Is great.

Yeah, I am basically screwed!!! The wife is still on my shit list. Plus, the timing couldn't be any worse. New minigore update, dragon's lair, pacman CE.. ugh
Well I already thought it would be a failure but Pac-Man: C.E. on the phone sounds even worse than it was going to be.

Oh snap. That sucks.

I tried the demo of Zombieville and it was unimpressive. The entire game seemed to be "hold right, tap shoot."

Seed 1: Rise of Darkness just came out from Chillingo, they usually make quality stuff - it's currently 40% off at $2.99 ... I'll give it a whirl tonight and post some impressions if no one else has.

The bogus microtransactions do suck, but the preview at TouchArcade was much more positive (but it made no mention of the microtransactions). I guess we'll find out soon enough. I'm probably going to buy it regardless. For one thing I've never had a problem with the swipe control scheme in Ms. Pac-Man. It works well for me.

Seed 1 does look interesting and fun! Looks like a MMO RPG feel game for the iphone. The buttons during game play might be a little cluttered and might accidentally hit buttons while you're in to the game. I might pick it up and let you guys know as well!

Did anyone see the text near the bottom of this page?

http://www.rockstargames.com/chinatownwars/

I'm actually a tad disappointed, because I've got Chinatown Wars for the DS and while I love it, I don't think I'll need to play it on the iPhone as well. I was hoping for a new game. Still, it's good news as it hopefully means we'll see other GTA games on the iPhone as well.

Hmm...I will not be getting it for the PSP now....

More correctly, "Wheeler's Treasure" is free today.

http://appventcalendar.com/

TouchArcade gave it a very positive review. I downloaded it and did the tutorial, but haven't had time to try any more then that yet.

EDIT: also Santa's Run is free today (top left of that page)

Does anyone know the total cost after the micro transactions? If the total cost is under $10 bucks it is still a great value for a great game. And I completely agree, the swipe controls are very good on Ms. Pac Man. You'll never be as accurate as a joystick but it is close enough.

The EA sale app today is American Idol: The Game (.99). Meh. I never watch the show; doubt I will play the game.

Honestly, it's not the total cost, but the principle of it, that's the issue. If I pay money for a game, I don't expect to immediately find that I have to then pay more money for it if I actually want to play it past the first few levels (that's called a demo and should be free). If they want to charge $8 for a game, they should charge $8 for the game, not put the player in a situation where the game that they paid $5 for is useless if they don't pay another $3 (I'm making up numbers here, of course, because I don't know the actual cost of the app, and keep in mind that IGN's info also doesn't give a cost on the mission levels, which could well be in multiple packs). That's just deceptive and bordering on extortion.

This is exactly what I was afraid would happen when I heard about the whole micro-transaction idea. And if this one gets supported, and Namco gets away with it and makes money on it, how brazen will the next one be?

Now, if they were to make the base application free and then charge for the add-on packs, I'd have less of a problem with that. It doesn't sound like that's what they're doing here, though.

The micro-transactions are annoying, but at least this way if you buy it for $5 and don't like it, you don't have to buy the rest of the game for $3 more. Of course this should be achieved with a free demo instead, but often there is no free demo at release, so maybe it's a little better. Yeah, I'm stretching. :)

Zen Bound use to have a lite version. Does it still? I tried it back then and thought it was ... pretty much what you'd expect. It looks and sounds fantastic, but it's, essentially, just wrapping a string around rock. I'll wait for it to be free.

I just hope that they're going to give full disclosure about it in their app description, since not everyone reads IGN or CAG. I doubt it, though.
