This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it reached 5,000+ posts making a new thread is easier to read through.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Apple iPhone & iPod Touch games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

App & Game Review Sites

Important Notes:

  1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iPod\iPhone. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
  2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
  3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
  4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
  5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
  6. Apps can be redownloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
  7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
  8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support site. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
  9. If you somehow break your iPhone or iPod Touch, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try these sites for do it yourself replacement parts & fixes.
iFixit Touch Repair Guide ; iFixit iPhone Repair Guide ; TechRestore
  10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks.

Thank god! It keeps erroring out saying it couldnt find my username.....was getting worried my account got hacked or some shit
Anyone else finding that the Netflix app is really only functional over Wifi? I'm not surprised but I was kind of hoping the 3g would allow for decent streaming. So far it hasn't really been, for me at least.
I haven't found that at all.

I watched an entire movie over 3G yesterday. Surprisingly good picture quality and no hiccups. It played straight through without any issues.

Netflix works great for me over 3G.

Super Mega Worm is out and is nothing but win.

I haven't tried it yet but Final Freeway looks like a decent Outrun clone.

I had no issues for 3G streaming yesterday. Unfortunately I am one of the sorry souls who is a newcomer to the iPhone world and could only get a 2gb data plan (lame.) WiFi works fine as well.

The upside I guess is that the times where I WOULD be watching a movie on my phone via Netflix I will also have access to WiFi. The shop where I get all the work done on our vehicles has WiFi, as does our doctor's office, etc.
Whats the best app for Internet Browsing? Free or otherwise.
Safari

I also recommend iCabMobile. It supports real tabs, can download any type of file, and can search for text within a page. I use Safari most of the time, but switch to iCabMobile as needed.
Whats the best app for Internet Browsing? Free or otherwise.
I use Safari the most probably, but I have Opera Mini, Atomic, and Perfect Browser, both Atomic and Perfect Browser are great. I use Opera if I am in a low signal area because it dumbs down web pages and loads even when I've only got 1 bar.

i pray to god that att doesn't put a stop to the netflix app. thats gotta be the best app ever. makes android look like crap now.

Doesn't Apple have to approve every app before it's allowed on the market? I don't see how ATT can deny it if Apple approves it. My guess is this is why ATT went to the 2GB limit a month instead of unlimited streaming. Just my guess though.

there have been other apps that have been taken off or their 3g has been removed. while an app has been approved, it seems like att always cripple or gets a data hungry app removed or changed down the line.
yea att does have the 2gig cap. but i imagine about 90% still have our unlimited that can be grandfathered in.

I actually remember reading earlier this summer that the 2GB limit was a compromise between ATT & Apple for allowing the Netflix app to be released for the iPhone because ATT knew it would otherwise completely blow out their bandwidth capabilities.
Any thoughts on NBA Live 10?
For a buck, I think it's pretty fun. If you're a hardcore baller, you may be disappointed but if you're more interested in a high-energy arcade experience, I think you'll like it. It controls fairly well and it's easy to pick up and play a quick game when you feel like it.

I also like EA's Tiger Woods quite a bit. It's probably my favorite iGolf game at the moment. Another easy buy for under a dollar.

Any one who doesn't have Ninja Town Trees of Doom needs to go ahead and buy it, at 1.99 it was worth it but for .99 cents its a total steal. One of my favorite highscore vertical climbing games on the idevice. It has some depth to it, a great art style, and has some of the best controls for the kind of game it is.

The game was awarded Slide to Play's game of the month when it came out. Here is their review for the game
Damn it, I missed the $9 Chaos Rings deal. Well, I'll wait it out for another sale.
I did pick it up, I'm about four and a half hours into it, and meh . . . honestly, you're not missing a lot. Seeing 3D RPG graphics on a phone is kind of cool, but once the novelty wears off, it's actually a fairly lame excuse for an RPG.

  • There are a very limited number of enemy types in any given stage (three per stage, if I'm remembering correctly), and even a limited number of combinations of them, so the battles get very repetitive. Once you have a strategy down for any given combination of enemies, beating them becomes almost a robotic exercise. But there are a lot of random battles, so you'll fight that combination again and again . . . and again.

  • You play one of two pairs of pre-defined characters, and armor/weapon upgrades are handed to you completely incrementally -- you finish one stage of the game, and one new piece of armor and one new weapon for each character are unlocked in the store, and it's the obvious upgrade. So there's no real character customization.

  • Other than the basic healing items, other items are almost completely superfluous -- I have yet to actually need to use any of them. Some of them, I have no idea what they actually do, as they didn't seem to really change anything when I used them.

  • The biggest problem of all, though, is that there's hardly any plot at all to speak of, and even at over four hours in (in a game that's only about 8-10 hours long by some reports I've seen), I have no idea why anything in the game is happening -- at one point early on, one NPC even makes some comment along the lines of "we don't need to know why things happen", almost as if rubbing the utter lack of a storyline into the player's face.
Since I spent so much on it, I'll probably play it through, but I wouldn't really recommend it. Maybe it will develop more a bit further in, but I'm not counting on it. It's not awful as a time-killer, but even at the sale price it was way too expensive for a game that's nothing more than that. There is a lot of unfulfilled promise in it, though, so I hope that Square-Enix uses what they built with it and creates an actual worthwhile game next time around.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again -- I still feel that Vay is the biggest bang-for-your-buck in JRPGs on the iPhone. It may look and play like an older game (it is an older game), but I got the most enjoyment out of it that I've gotten out of any iPhone game so far. I really wish that developer would do some more titles.
R-Type got a 6.5 or so on IGN, citing control issues. I believe it; that game was all about pinpoint navigation.
R-Type's control scheme is pretty good, actually, going with the offset finger movement of Cave's games.

R-Type is one of the generic nostalgia cash-ins I've only indulged in once or twice so I picked it up, but, I think IGN's MAIN point is that in buying this, you will be buying a game most unaltered human beings will never beat. You might be better off buying the XBLA version of R-Types 1 and 2, with entirely optional but enjoyable shmup style respawning and retro/modern graphics transitions.

Port quality is very solid though.

Even so, Arcane, I would like to give this game a try.

Disappointment aside, I bought Shining Force for a dollar. Hope that game is fun and engaging.

This game reminds me of an indie game made out of Game Maker from 2006.
The game is called Death Worm developed by Jack Swift (JTR).

There is a PC version for it. If you want to try out, here's the link:

The original author should be pissed if the developer for this iPhone game is not the identical person.

Usually I wait for free but couldn't pass on Zombie Infection, Shining Force and Oregon Trail for a buck apiece. Really looking forward to Shining Force. I hope it's as good as I remember.

I just want some more variety for iphone games, compared to the overhead shooters/puzzle i own already.

Thank you for the input. Purchased. :)

I have a question, maybe someone can answer it :

1. What is the best texting app?

2. I don't have a phone, well I have a phone, but its really old and I don't want to pay for texts. I wouldn't call anyone anyways so its really pointless for me to get a cell phone since between my mom and myself, we use less than 20 min a month, yes I am pathetic.

Can I use a texting app to enter contests that require texting, like ones that say text "word" to 4555 to win? I will be pretty disappointed if I can't.

Looking forward to finally getting one of these things after Sept. 1st. Have downloaded over 1000 apps and games so far and completely revamped my music library, spending HOURS on it.

Supposedly Text Free is really good. I downloaded it but ended up not using it because you have to sing up and have them assign you a number. I already have a regular phone number, and a google voice number, and didn't really want to confuse people further with a third number. You should be able eligible for any service that requires you to send and receive messages, so long as you can verify you are the account holder.

I use textPlus. It's free (okay, the free version has tiny little ads on the bottom) and it gives you unlimited texting. You do need a cell phone number to associate with it, however. The app works with just about every carrier in the U.S. So, even if your phone is really old (well, maybe not rotary dial old) you could use it with textPlus and save yourself from racking up a bunch of text charges. And, yes, you can use it to enter contests. Or just send annoying messages to your friends. Have fun.
