The following thread are for niche-based Japanese video games by smaller companies such as Atlus, NIS America, AKSYS, XSEED, D3 Publisher, KOEI/TECMO, SNK Playmore, Ignition, Natsume or any sweet deals for those who are passionate and hardcore about Japanese video games even from the bigger companies like SquareEnix, Sega, Bandai Namco, etc.

But to avoid any messiness of links everywhere, we'll focus on games within the last 2-3 years as opposed to the last five-ten. [although, if you do see older titles on sale, please post them regardless].

The theme of these deals are Japanese video games distributed in the US by the smaller niche companies. The thread is literally for those who love Japanese games.
There will be a few Korean games that you may see on this list, such as the "DJ Max" games.

If you see a deal, please post!

NOTE: Please check the most recent page for the latest deals.

And I want to thank many of you in advance who submit their deals and their support!!!

I saw on nichegamer.net : "Atlus as confirmed to us that both regions will get a retail copy, while NIS America is handling the distribution duties in Europe. The game is a turn based strategy RPG, featuring over 80+ hours of gameplay, the original Japanese voices, and it will set you back $39.99"
Thanks. That's pretty cool, and the price point isn't bad.

Back to rambling about Akiba PS3/PSV vs PS4

I should probably wait for the PS4. I imported the game for Vita already, but never got around to playing it. If I get it on Vita I KNOW I'll get again on PS4.

I don't think I need three copies of this game (that's reserved for Project DIVA)

Atlus will be bringing Tears to Tiara II: Heir of the Overlord to the U.S. and leaving the Japanese audio in: http://www.siliconera.com/2014/07/25/atlus-nis-america-bringing-tears-tiara-ii-north-america-europe/

This is for Vita, right? The platform--as well as whether this will be a physical release or digital-only--isn't mentioned anywhere in the article.
Huh. Never heard of it. That is one goofy-looking sRPG. I don't know that I like the camera angle or chibi style. It's certainly unique, though.

I went ahead and ordered it from Crunchyroll. It's not that I'm worried they'll run out of copies, but I like getting extra stuff for the same price as I'd buy it elsewhere. I tend to play the stranger games on my PS Vita rather than my PS3 so I don't have to explain myself whenever my wife, or kid walk in and catch me playing it. Some JRPGs are odd enough to where I'd switch to porn to make it less awkward, lol.

This is the first time they announce a date. Aug 5th was a placeholder.
Ah, I see. Still weird to have a placeholder date so near the actual date. Kinda nice, though, since now I can buy Trails in the Sky on Steam and not have to worry about getting another XSEED game a week later.

Tears to Tiara 2...woot...not too expensive either though in October...ugg....least it's cheaper, though there might some cool CE or something.

I'm good with October seeing that I have 6 or 7 games pre-ordered for August/September and non in October so far. Of course that's subject to change.

It's pretty common for XSeed to announce release dates really late in the game. Usually within weeks of the game's release.

The Tears to Tiara news is pretty nice.  I only have Hearts R and Shinovi Versus (I think) so far and I know I'm getting a more visual novel game too...but that's it.  I'll have to see if I can play it around Smash 3DS (when I decide to start it).

Smash Bros is such a fun pick up and play game....i'm sure I'll be able to squeeze it in with other games. For October I also have Evolve...which I know will get played a bunch by my friends and I. That will likely take a good amount more time than Smash for sure.

if you enjoy visual novel games, tears to tiara is a must buy, the presentation, and gameplay involves alot of visual novel style as well.

here is a gameplay video,

Battles start at around the 56:00 mark...

Those chibi characters are a real turn off for me.

The look reminds me a lot of PS1/PS2 era RPGs.  By that, I mean the presentation of the characters in two styles, a more artistic style for story sequences/cutscenes, and a more chibi presentation during battle sequences.  I realize this never stopped happening but I fell like it was much more prevalent in older games where the hardware couldn't keep up with overly detailed characters during gameplay.

For Smash, I know once I get the Wii U version then no other game will really matter for a long time. I think if <----- makes the roster I will really poke around with the 3DS version the minute I get it instead of either not at all or weeks before the Wii U version.

Anyway, thanks for the link YBX87! I didn't expected the graphics to look that way and it's still perfectly fine, but if I may ask anyone, how much of the game is gameplay overall (roughly of course)? Thanks!

The Smash Wii U bundle is avail. at BestBuy for pre-order. And GCU works with it. Which is a little surprising since all those Wiimote+ bundles don't let you use GCU.

Also, I tried the 3DS version of Smash back during the BB/E3 promo. Honestly, I wouldn't buy it right away. It ran well below 60 fps and controlling fighting games on a Nintendo handheld is not a good time. I remember trying to play Bleach DS, almost impossible to be consistent.

I really like this observation, or rather, like that you pointed out how I never consiously paid attention to my high regards for character portraits.

I'd hate to use a popular game as an easy cop-out, but FFVII is a great example of this, with the character portraits looking like a canvas painting, much more serious looking than the 3D models, just kinda added an extra layer.

Ahh, the simple things.

I've tried Smash Brothers for the 3DS at Nintendo World. Personally, I was underwhelmed by it. The cel shading made the graphic look terrible especially when the stages zoom out and using thin characters like Sheik. The controls felt off and not as responsive as the Wii U version. It's good as a smash brothers fix on the go but falls short compare to the console experience.

Thanks for all the Smash Bros feedback....sad to hear the 3DS version underwhelmed and didn't perform as well....I know I want a WiiU someday and Smash will be needed to be purchased as well. I was hoping for a good fix of it until I eventually got a WiiU or played a bunch on a friend's system and i'm sure for a casual in Smash Bros (honestly haven't played much since the N64 version...though I have played the other versions...just never owned them....been a Sony guy for a while) it will be OK. Hopefully Nintendo fine tunes it so it is a bit better of course!

Tears to Tiara eh? The anime was pretty crappy, hopefully the game is better. Im not that impressed. Gameplay looks ok, but the graphics are terrible. Someone said it reminds them of ps1 era games. It doesn't even remind me of that. It reminds me of the terrible graphics in something like specral force 3

Yeah, but Spectral Force 3 had much lower texture resolution and much lower poly-counts for the characters. This game doesn't look nearly as bad, graphics-wise. :p

Watching some gameplay videos, it doesn't scream "buy it day one" to me. Also, I must have missed in somewhere but this is getting a full retail release, right?

Cool.  At full price, I really was waffling back and forth whether to buy this.  But with the $10 discount, plus GCU, plus some credit I have, I'll grab the Unlimited World Red.  I'm guessing Best Buy overstocked the game (by their standards) and now want to get rid of it.

I heard day one addition dlc doesn't work on the ps3 version, unless you have the vita version as well and download it first or something weird.

Not really, it's just that people get confused because when you redeem the code you get the DLC for both versions and if you download both of them the game gets confused and errors out. As I recall, if you let the title scroll in the little window before downloading, you can figure out which is which. Kind of a dumb oversight on Bandai Namco's part, though.

@Best Buy
Thanks for the heads up!

Also at Best Buy, I was able to pick up Conception II for the Vita today for $19 after GCU discount. It was clearanced to $22 but YMMV as it was a special clearance.

It was also the launch version with soundtrack CD.

I wish my BBY clearanced stuff out. Its Vita section has like 5 games in it, and they don't stock any obscure Japanese titles (unless someone pre-orders it so they have extra copies, and that someone has to be me apparently -.-)

Wait.  Sealed Game Boy COLOR games?  I don't care how bad they are, I would have bought them and kept the receipt near them to prove I bought a 15 year old game at retail. :)

Unfortunately I've found that the Vita sections in my local Best Buy stores (well, heck really in every retail store in the area) is more or less nonexistent.  They barely give enough shelf space for AAA titles, let alone anything even remotely considered for a niche audience.

Drools at the thought of stumbling onto a 3ds copy in this condition/price range.
