NHL 2012-2013 Season- Let's do this. Games start January 19

So, Ottawa, my East cost team (and my wife's favorite) is 3-0-0 for the season so far and my main team, Colorado, is 2-1-0 for the season. Solid starts in my eyes, especially Ottawa. Would love to see Anderson and Alfredsson get to the Cup finals this year.
I was at the game last night and I'm glad St. Louis won, but I'm surprised. I would have thought Nashville would have come out fighting after a loss in a shootout Monday night. The game almost reminded me of the game against Detroit. The only difference was Nashville did try. Halak didn't seem like he had to do much at all, but the few times he did he was making myself and everyone around me a little nervous.

It was a hell of a game and I did expect more from Nashville. Maybe I will get what I expect from them the next time the two teams meet.
Nashville fans are losing their minds with the team's lack of shooting...especially on the power play. Sometimes I don't know what they're waiting for. I think there are too many passers on the team. It really sucks that Andrei Kostitsyn and Alexander Radulov had to be selfish assholes. They're exactly the type of scorers the Preds need. But they were also shitty teammates.

Somebody has to step up and be ready to shoot the puck. I feel like Colin Wilson could be that guy, but he's gotta assert himself and start looking for his shot. I don't know if Legwand or Fisher could ever be 30 goal scorers (Legwand's career high is 27 back in 2006). And Erat is just way too streaky. At worst, they need to just start shooting and look for garbage goals. You won't know how the puck might bounce if you don't ever shoot it. Again, people have been bagging on Rinne, but they would have lost if he had given up 1 goal. Playing most of the game in your defensive zone and getting outshot every night is not a recipe for winning.

Horrible start to the Kings' season. The game last night was just brutal. Here in LA, last year's power play woes were largely blamed on assistant Jaime Kompon (now with the Blackhawks). It looks like the players should've shared more of the blame. The PP looks awful.

From all accounts, the officials in that game were out of their fucking minds.

I've seen too many very questionable goals taken back and the season isn't even a week old. Add in the ref who was roughing up Gerbe in last night's game, the *weird*...beyond weird...penalties in the Kings/Oilers game, and this season already has far too much official involvement.

The celebration was probably a bit much, but for the second goal of his career, and considering the situation (first goal being waved off), I can appreciate the youthful exuberance. It may be way over the top, but the league probably needs things like this to make sure the fans come back. It also sets Yakupov up for a brutal hit the next time these two teams meet...which is also good drama for the league.

I don't get discussing if the celebration was "over the top" or not. That whole conversation seems silly, pretentious, and rooted in some false sense of tradition to me.

Also: I'd celebrate that way if I tied it up given the fucking disgusting officiating in that game, too. I'd be humping the refs, daring them to wave off another one. Okay, I wouldn't go that far - that crew would have found a way.
Add in the ref who was roughing up Gerbe in last night's game
That was bullshit how 1. the call wasn't a major/game-misconduct, and 2. that ref should have been suspended for the way he handled Gerbe. If I were Buffalo i would file an official complain. That was completely uncalled for.

Well, regardless of how you feel about the "act like you've been there before" mentality (though like I said...it was Yakupov's 2nd career goal...so really, he hadn't, lol), that celebration is going to get him fucked up something fierce the next time they play LA. it's like prison. If you want to avoid a beating, don't draw attention to yourself. That said, if he can take the heat, then more power to him.

Also, here's a pretty good article on it.

I think Rinne did the best he could. The announcers for Fox Sports Midwest said Monday night that in order to score on him you have to keep shooting the puck at him and get the rebounds. So you have to overwhelm him with shots and one will go through. That's what St. Louis did last night. Hell St. Louis had 11 shots in the 2nd period. That's just 2 less than Nashville had all night. You can't keep letting a team take shots like that if you are not going to do the same. Rinne is the least of Nashville's problems.

As for Yakupov's celebration it was like someone said his first carrier goal that was counted. Was it a bit much sure, but when you have 4.7 seconds left and you manage to tie the game wouldn't you celebrate too? Like I said it does seem a bit much, but you have to figure he made the goal that tide the game with 4.7 seconds left allowing them to go on and beat the Stanley Cup winning team from last season and it was also his first counted goal in the NHL. He saved the Oilers asses.

Honestly, after the bullshit call from the refs in that LA/Edm game, I would have celebrated as well like that or even worse, gave Quick a nice little point and blow a kiss (yes, I have done this when facing a douchebag goalie in D and C league). I think the biggest bullshit is that Quick went to talk to the ref. Thats bullshit and reason why they don't let goalies have Captaincy. He is no captain or assistant captain. So he had no business talking to the ref about that call. Let the Captain or Assistant deal with it. I'm just glad the Oilers took the game.

Hell, when I play it's either a simple wipe the ice from the blade (D league) or a simple Yaaahhh! (C league). It's the adrenaline that gets you to do it really.

The main question is, will the Canadiens try to keep PK Subban or let him go? If only Tampa could get him.

Looks like more of the same from the Lightning. Great offense, iffy defense, terrible goalie play. Big comeback win tonight against Ottawa.
Devils and Rangers this week, ugh. We're terrible against the trap, so this week is gonna be hell on my nerves.
Nice win over NY thursday, hopefully we can go streaking starting tonight against the Panthers.

Who would they trade for him though? No point in trading someone like Hedman and our offense is so good right now that I wouldn't want to mess with it. Unless we can get him for prospects/draft picks/other and he's going to sign long term I wouldn't want to mess with what they've got going. The Lightning need Lindback to be more consistent because they are a very good team right now. Good win tonight against Philly. Lindback finally looked like a real goalie.

So, looks like it's not all doom and gloom for the Red Wings after the first month. Nice feeds by Datsyuk in last nights game by the way.
Would be nice to have a winning streak starting with revenging the loss against the Blues and then having games against the lowly Blue Jackets and Flames.

I actually feel for Detroit. The Central Division is looking pretty brutal between Chicago and St Louis. Look on the bright side, could be worse. Could be the Flyers. lol...

In other news, I dunno how Niemi made that save during OT. They didn't deserve to win that's for sure. They weren't the team I've seen for the past 5 games.

PS3 app has been updated for the new season. Interface looks completely different, but it was smooth so far. Going to test out a game tonight and see how it is.

That call on Conacher was complete bull shit last night. On a breakaway, trying to get around the defender and they call him for hooking. I hope a video pops up or maybe slickkill77 can find one. Worst part is they let the play resume as he scored and than waved the goal off. Freaking blow the whistle before he even gets on a breakaway at least. I'm thinking these refs need a refresher course on penalties.

Yea that was bs. The defender got good positioning on him but Conacher beat him cleanly. I thought they called a holding penalty on him. Couldn't find anything on youtube, espn or nhl.com

Holy crap! What a shootout between LA and Nashville. 8 rounds, both teams on the brink numerous times, and the Preds FINALLY win a damn shootout. I thought for sure after Kopitar put the Kings ahead, it was over. But Gabrielle Bourque of all people tied it back up. Rinne finally gets his first win of the season. Damn...we needed that one.

I think the NHL gave the refs a list of new things to call and a video showing them what to look for. I know the announcers for St. Louis keep talking about new penalties and a video that all the teams got just before the start of the season.

One of my very good friends said the Rangers were getting fucked last night vs Pittsburgh.

If you know how much it would torture any of us to stand up for the Rangers, you have a good idea how bad the officiating is this year.

I only saw highlights from that game. I know they have been hitting the Blues with stupid penalties. I think some of the ones they are calling are for things that in the past players were able to do. I noticed the Blues tend to get one or two called on them that last season they could do.

EDIT: Damn the refs. I was having issue staying awake during the St. Louis and Detroit game last night, but when I woke up it was near the end and 3-3. They said Backes hit someone in the head when he went to check them. All the replays you can tell it was a clean hit. So he got 5 minutes in the box. That game would have went into OT and maybe even a shootout if it wasn't for such a BS call.

Yeah that was a poor poor call. It was made by the ref who saw the play from behind. The way the defensmen reacted made it seem like he was dazed. The way his head moved and how he looked like a young deer on his feet. It makes the win seem a little tainted considering the powerplay time.

From what little I was able to see last night and the way both teams were playing St. Louis might have still loss, but that call is what did it in for them. I try not to see things like that, but the game was tied and would have went into OT. I think Detroit would have still won, but it would have been in OT or a shootout. I know the replay was shown on TV, but did the refs even go back and watch it to make sure before going on with the call?

Compare that to the no call on Erskine's elbow to Wayne Simmond's face, which was observed by both the referee and a linesman...these officials are fucking appalling. Shameful, horrible, inconsistent, inattentive, unaccountable.

I'm furious with the Erskine no-call, but I'd be beyond livid if I were a Blues fan. That's the worst call I've seen in years.

The refs seem worse than what I heard the scabs were in the NFL. That game last night in the first period I think both St. Louis and Detroit had 3 power plays each. The one was a 5 on 3 for Detroit. I'm wondering if the refs felt bad for them because of how bad they lost the last time Detroit played St. Louis.

Just announced on Center Ice during the Pittsburgh and New Jersey game the NHL has resended the penalty against Backes last night. A lot of good that does now.

From what I understand is that they (NHL) correct the call but as you said it's already too late for that to do any good. Perhaps it was done because it was major? I forget but do you get an automatic one game suspension if you receive a 5 minute major and a game misconduct?

yeah it's so it doesn't count against any automatic suspension requirements

Same thing happened to Kris Letang a couple years ago. He put his shoulder into a dude's chest and sent him into next week but because his helmet came off refs gave 5 + game. Got overturned.

Hartford AHL announced attendance was 13,239 last night, larger than the announced NHL crowd of 12,151 in Phoenix. http://t.co/PvRf3cdu

What the fuck is the NHL still doing in Phoenix?

Hubris. Can't admit they made mistakes...not mistakes, blunders...in trying to expand into non-hockey markets.

Continue to lose money on the league end of things, take a pound of flesh out of the players next time the CBA is up for renewal. It's easy to win that way, and precisely what happened over the past few months.

Here's the thing...what markets would be able to support an NHL team (have an arena that is usable) in the near future and are willing to make the financial commitment? I completely agree that Phoenix is a terrible market for hockey. They need to get out of there ASAP. But at the same time, it needs to be a smart move. I would personally love to see another Canadian team...

They just don't want to move Phoenix to a lucrative market with enormously wealthy entities interested in ownership when they can extract more money out of them in expansion fees. Unfortunately they'll do what they can to keep them there and if they move, it'll be to a mid market city at best. Kansas City, Las Vegas, perhaps Seattle if there's not a potential owner there who will pay expansion fees, but the A list markets like Quebec City and Markham/Hamilton/Greater Toronto are out of that picture.

They're 100% going to expand again. Current owners get a payday that players don't get a cut of. The union adds 40 jobs. NBC's national footprint doesn't shrink by moving another US team to Canada. CBC/TSN are helped enormously.

I think it was during the Pittsburgh and New Jersey game the other day, but they were talking about Phoenix. I forgot some of what was said, but what I do remember is that they wont be moving to Canada. I think another thing was move them to another state and make them an AHL team. I also remember something said about a potential buyer, but they don't want to pay the 170 million being asked for them. Hell I don't blame them. The one announcer said the price the person was willing to pay, but I forgot it. All I know is it seems like their is a high chance that next season Phoenix will not have an NHL team.

Anybody know what the deal is in Vancouver concerning the goaltending? Luongo has played 4 straight games. Are they giving him a chance to take over the starting position? Showing him off to trade suitors? Are they going to end up trading Schneider instead (lol)? It's odd hearing how they are basically holding on to Luongo until they see a worthy deal but the longer it takes the more complicated it is for the GM to make a move when the goalie he is trying to trade is the teams top goalie this season so far.

As far as I know the Canucks want to get rid of Luongo and keep Schneider but most teams would want Schneider because of his contract situation. I think right now Luongo is playing more is because he is just playing better than Schneider was. The Canucks GM was at the Caps/Pens game over the weekend and Washington is one of the hot spots where Luongo might end up.
After watching some of the weekend games , these refs are just getting worse with the no goal calls. Oh yeah, lets go Bolts!
Harrumph. I hope Matt Carle chokes.

;)

Last two punches on Crombeen were really uncalled for honestly. There is a code for fighting, no matter what this idiot on NBC says. Hell, Max Talbot stopped as soon as he realized Ryan Callahan popped his shoulder out.

Edit: No Simmonds or Hartnell? Ouch. Bolts looking shitty right now but I'm hoping Conacher gets either an assist or goal tonight.

Crombeen started it with the Flyers' goon. Got knocked into next week by Rinaldo. Laughed my ass off, and don't feel a bit bad about it.

Don't pick a fight with a goon. Know better.

EDIT: Rinaldo's mic'd up tonight, they showed him talking w/ the referee and apologizing for the excess punches (saying "I didn't know he was out"). Looks like you're correct about the 'code.'

EDIT2: Internet, you're so quick.
