Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (DS) $19.99 New / $17.99 Pre-Owned @ GameStop

My gamestop was sold out. They showed stock online earlier in the day. Next closes location was around a 20 minute drive but I didn't have the time to go that far. If amazon price matches ill pick it up for sure and I still will probably pick it up sometime soon even if they don't.
$14.99 or bust
I wouldn't risk it to save a few dollars. I don't think Aksys made a lot of these. They're a very small publisher.
Picked up a new sealed one. Can't wait to see it.
how were you able to do this? do you just go to a gamestop and ask if they happen to have a sealed copy that they haven't gutted yet? or is there some other way?

i've never bought a ds game from gamestop so i'm not sure what to do.

thanks in advance.

Found a sealed copy on the way home from work last night. Thanks OP and other CAGs for their op/eds on this one. It was on my radar. Now if Ghost Trick would drop similarly...
Great game at that price. Worth it. If you have a DSI XL, you will be in heaven.

There is lots of reading.
^^This......kind of killed the game for me. Ok, flame away, but let me go on record to say that I can read. 999 just has so much text to wade thru, I put 5-6 hours into it and just kind of quit. Traded it in to Amz for $15 a couple months ago.

I may have had a completely different experience if this were a 360/pS3 game, and the text was voiced. I like all types of games, I love Catherine for instance, but 999 was just too text heavy for me.

I know I'm in the minority on this thread, just stating an opinion the may be of value to others that understand what they like and don't like about games.
any ports of this game planned?
Highly unlikely. There's a part at the very end that was specifically designed for the DS's two screens. I can't explain more without spoilers. But on any other system it just wouldn't be as effective.

If you like 999 (and most people here seem to) you might try tracking down a copy of Ever 17 by AnimePlay / Hirameki International. That was a company in the early 2000s that translated and released a number of interactive Japanese novels for PC/Mac and DVD players. Mostly renai (dating sims) but a few were full-fledged adventure games. Ever 17 is by the author of 999, and is considered the best of these releases. Unfortunately it's also really expensive to come by these days.

I can see that. It's definitely not for everybody. It's basically a story (a very good story imo) with some puzzles. If you're getting this for anything but the story I don't see why you'd like it.

I did the in-store pick up option on their website. When I showed up to the store I expected a gutted copy, but got lucky I guess.

It appears this is now a B&M only deal as the game is no longer available online. Does the limited availability kill a possible Amazon PM?

Know what you're buying. In Japan, this wasn't called a game, it's a "visual novel".

nope becuase when u notify amz of a lower price, you can choose store (offline) and just say its gamestop and what city you're in. ona side note, amz just put up preorder for valkyria chronicles 2: world artworks lol. gonna start a thread right...now!

I did this as well and got lucky. A few stores near me had it in stock though, so I was prepared to visit several of them before giving up on finding a sealed copy.

I got this day one. Been playing it slowly (at the laundromat... of all places!) but it's really good. So far the puzzles haven't been too hard.

This. I tell EVERYONE that I recommend this game to that it's a visual novel, so they know that the game is entirely reading + puzzles. I can understand how some people don't like visual novels, but you really shouldn't be buying one if they're not your thing or if it's too much reading for you.

I guess I had to experience a "visual-novel" once to realize it's not my thing. In my case, 999 was the initial experience with this type of "game".

Again, I can completely see some people really digging this, but it's certainly not a game that can receive a blanket recommendation for every gamer out there.

Writing heavy is good if the writing is engaging, gripping, well paced. I've not seen a VN yet, aside for a couple of charming porn VNs, that has writing worth a damn. Usually they're at the level of dull-witted winding prose you can expect from awful Metal Gear monologues.

Catherine doesn't waste your time. Phoenix Wright wastes your time but keeps you engaged with the suspense. Ghost Trick does not waste your time.

Picked up a copy at the St Augustine FL GS. One open on the sales floor, brought it up to the counter and they handed me a sealed copy from the cabinet behind the counter, and they seemed to have plenty more. They even switched out the cover out for me when I opened it because it had slid out and been crushed inside the plastic :p
Thanks OP.

999 definitely doesn't waste any of your time. It was engaging, gripping, and well paced the entire time for me.

You can buy a acekard for 15 and a 2gb sd card for 5 and put at least 5 Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors on there. save 80 bucks =]

Yaaaaay, putting struggling, niche translation/publishing houses out of business, yaaaay. Go fuck over a behemoth corporation if you're so dead-set on being a Cheap Ass Hole.

Friend and i both picked up a copy at a local gamestop, He got the gutted one and i got a sealed one... Only fair.. i told him of the deal :p

I have a gamestop outside of the mall, one inside of the mall and and EB games inside of the mall within 2 minutes of my house. I went to the gamestop outside of the mall yesterday and they were out of stock. I had her check the next closest store and she told me it was one around 20 minutes away. Well I happen to be in the mall on other buisness today and decided to run by gamestop just to see if they had it. They had 2 copies left, so I was able to snag one. Kind of silly that they were trying to send me 20 minutes away yesterday when a store 2 minutes away had it in stock.

I did get screwed and got one of their new but used copies but I'm glad I was finally able to pick this game.

Oh, this probably goes without saying, but if you pick it up used you really should wipe the data. There are... reasons.

It might seem like a complete stretch to ask you this, but I can't imagine those circumstances being very common: are you talking about the Smithhaven Mall?

I might sound crazy, but there being more than one mall with two Gamestops and an EB Games seems equally crazy to me.

Springfield (VA) Mall was like this until recently. There was an EB downstairs (later moved upstairs and re-branded GS), a Gamestop upstairs (which only recently closed) and another Gamestop in the strip mall right across the street from the mall.

St. Louis (south county mall).

I never understood the reason for having so many stores that all sell the same thing and are owned by the same company making sense. It's been like that for a long time though.

At my old house there used to be a gamestop and an EB games within a couple of minutes of each other. They finally closed the EB though.

My mall used to have a Gamestop, an Ebgames, and then another gamestop across the highway.

The Ebgames closed.

I guess this is common practice for them. I can't see how it's profitable but it must be if they've used this strategy for so long and in so many locations.

On topic, I think i'm really going to like this game. I'm not that far into yet but it seems very promising.

Not in every case, but most of them, a lease is involved which forces GS to operate in multiple locations in the same mall.

For example, inside the mall near me, there are 2 GS stores very close to each other. Many of these GS stores were once EB stores when they were separate companies. So, if the EB store signed a 7 year lease in 2005, GS still has to pay that lease thru 2012, even though GS already has another store in the mall. I'm sure GS would prefer to only have one store and one lease, but legally they inherited the EB lease, and have to honor it (BK is the only way out). GS will just keep 2 stores until 2012, then dump the 2nd space once the lease expires.

Again, not the reason everytime, but that's a common reason you see 2 GS stores in the same mall all over the place.

One of the best gaming experiences I have ever had on a handheld. I haven't picked it up since
I was murdered
but it's still a remarkable game and certainly worth it at this price.

Ahh yes the old "I was murdered" trick... Yes yes

I picked up the last copy and it was gutted. The girl called 2 of the other 4 Gamestop in the area and the other one that I knew had it told her it was gutted as well. She told me they had a lot of copies late last year for $26.99 and couldn't sell them. This was one of the copies that they put cases in the bin with the games for sale. Just happy to have a copy and this is one of the rare occasions where I can accept it being gutted.

I loved the game...and this happened.

I haven't had the patience to go through it again yet -- I'd be really ticked if if happened on my second play through.

I'd hate to tell you but you might get ticked off on your second even third play through since most of the games multiple endings are bad.

Just completed the game last night and it really is a game that lingers with you after you finish it.

Yeah, I
was murdered my second time too. Although my first murder was DEFINITELY much cooler. The second one was just eerie as fuck.

Don't let it discourage you though.
