PS3 101: New user's guide to the PS3 (ask questions here -- TMK is on duty)

so with a game like naruto ultimte ninja storm if someone had a game save with all the characters (including the hokage support characters ) could you download that save add it to your ps3 and have all those characters unlocked?
So wait, Home is out now, right? Is it free?
Yeah, it's been out for a week now. Should be under the PSN part of the XMB.
I've yet to find a game save that I couldn't transfer. Do you remember which games this might be?
No, but it's in the "dead ps3 support thread".

Supposedly,
rockband
high velocity bowling
locoroco

I thought I saw it, thanks. I read it was a 3GB download; it'll have to wait

No, it's not.
It "allocates" 3 gigs of space, but the initial download is no where near that.
It downloads each area the first time you try to enter, but you can also do background downloading of the area so you can walk around while you wait.

When transferring save files, my guess is that you wouldn't get the trophy information. My assumption is that trophies are actually tied to your profile, so you'd have to accomplish them again while logged in with that profile to actually claim them.

Then again, I remember that Naughty Dog made the Uncharted trophies non-retroactive because they were worried that people would somehow fake out the trophy system by using existing game saves...is downloading existing saves off of the 'Net what they were talking about?
Even though I'm not new to the PS3, I have a question for y'all!... Does the PS3 catch viruses through it's web browser? Anyone know? :/
It can get spywaer...

okay it actually worked out. I guess I was grabbing the wrong files. one of the saves still didn't make it over but it's no loss. Thanks guys. The PS3 is all set up! Thanks!
For realz? :O
It's cool though, all you have to do is clik nekst to maek it go away.

I think you might be thinking about Sony for that last part, not Naughty Dog, because that was one of the reasons they didn't make the trophies retroactive by default .

Single-player games aren't going to have anything retroactive when they're patched after launch, but it seems that Sony's updated the trophy system a bit so that it can convert your saves so you don't have to delete your save beforehand and lose all of your progress. You won't be able to get trophies from before that point unless you saved constantly early on, though some of the online games that got trophies post-launch have some retroactive trophies based on rank and stuff that are kept server-side.

Freaky: If you're that worried about viewing all of those sketchy porn sites on your PS3, you might want to stop even though you're not going to get a virus.
Mega Man 9 and SPF2THD saves are also locked, last time I checked. Thanks, Capcom.
HVB, Locoroco, MM9, and SF2THD are all downloadable games. Those are going to be tied to your account in some fashion, hence why they are locked.

As far as Rockband, my guess is that the saved system is tied into which DLC you have, and they have locked the entire system. Probably the same thing with SCIV.

Locked to an account, that's fine, but I'm pretty sure they were saying they're locked to a system id, meaning if your PS3 dies, you send it to sony and they send a replacement instead of repairing it, the save file won't transfer.

Because the games themselves are locked to an ID, as are the save systems for those games... If your PS3 dies odds are you are SOL on most everything anyway if you haven't backed anything up.

Can you play video file with subtitles? I was going to show Love Actually as the holiday movie but then i remembered there's a whole storyline that require subtitles and while I can play them on my computer I didn't notice them on the PS3.

Unless they are hard-subs (I think that's what they're called), I don't think so.

I'm having network problems that I thought some of you might be able to help me sort out.

Two games in particular, Crash Commando and COD 5:WaW, at various times put up a "Ethernet cable not connected" message. When this happens I am also disconnected from the PSN.

For CC, most times when I try to connect to a multiplayer game this happens. This doesn't happen with single player games. For COD 5, it happens when I boot the game up for the first time.

I have a hard wired connection to my PS3 from a D-link DI-624 router. My PS3 has an assigned, static, internal IP address and is set to DMZ.

I play many other online games (GTA IV, Rock Band 2, Burnout Paradise, etc.) and have never had a problem with those games. Since CC and COD have been recent purchases this is a new occurance for me.

Once I thought I had it figured out on CC by turning off the media server settings, but that turned out not to solve the problem permanently.

Anyone else have a similar problem or ideas on what I can try to fix it?

Thanks

Edit: I think, although I am not certain, that when I get that "Ethernet cable not connected" message, my router is resetting. Haven't been able to confirm it 100% though.

Edit 2: Thinks seem to work fine if I go straight through my cable modem and not through the router. So I imagine this is a router problem. Need to figure it out though as I need to use the router for other purposes (wife's internet access for instance)
Yeah, that was my first thought that it was the switch it's plugged in to not giving power.
Were you responding to my network problem Wolf or someone else?

I'm pretty sure this is not power related as this is my day to day router that my wife an I both use. Our computers have never experienced any problems and remember that this problem seems to be only limited to those particular games.

Anyone able to watch Hulu on the browser? It's so unbearably slow; most times it just freezes the browser. It can handle Crunchyroll though.

Well, I've narrowed down my networking problem. Earlier I reported that for CoD5 and Crash Commando I was getting an "Ethernet cable not connected" message when running them at various times. A cable *was* clearly connected and working for all other games.

Then I started testing things and found:

1) A wireless connection and resetting my D-link DI-624 router didn't improve anything
2) I could get online perfectly by plugging directly into my cable modem
3) I could get online perfectly by using an old Linksys BEFSR41 router that I have lying around.

So, in my eyes the D-Link router is clearly the problem.

Is there something in the make up between D-Link and Linksys routers that would make them behave differently like I've described? Seems weird to me but I'm no networking genius.

I may need to buy a new Linksys router b/c I definitely need wireless which my old Linksys router does not have. Any recomendations on models?

Thanks

can someone tell me what the options are for charging ps3 controllers other than using the ps3 and/or a "ps3 controller charging station"?

I searched this thread and found someone who said a direct wall charger did not work for them, but using their PC did work. I also read elsewhere that a dish network or directv DVR will work.

Can anyone elaborate on what happens when you use a wall charger that doesnt work? Is it damaging the controller in any way or does it simply not charge?

I was looking at options like these:
http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-BZ1030...d_bbs_sr_4?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1230732779&sr=8-4
http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Dual-W...?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1230732779&sr=8-11

If I got the sony version could I use a USB hub to charge more than 2 controllers?
Hey all,

Did a quick search and only two threads came up for "replacement cover art". Was wondering if there was a thread dedicated to replacement cover art. I picked up GTAIV today from BB and would like to get rid of the BB case. Any pointers would be great. TIA!
Edit: Oops, somehow skipped over the previous page of this thread where this was answered already. Sorry.

Got a Blu-ray movie question for you guys since I'm thinking about buying a PS3. My HD monitor only supports 1080i and 480p/480i, so would I be able to watch Blu-ray movies in 1080i or only 480p? I could hook it up with either component or HDMI cables... it has a DVI HDCP-compliant input, so I can use an HDMI to DVI converter.

Not sure at all, I don't know if the converters would affect anything but if your monitor supports 1080i and you have the HDMI cables, it should play 1080i

I have the same thing. I have my ps3 and xbox 360 running through a switch. And the switch is hdmi with a hdmi to dvi cable going to the tv.

Mine runs 1080i too.

It's a pain to watch through mine. Kind of works, but hitches or stuff like that. I just kind of gave up on it and just rent the stuff now.

Sounds typical. Linksys stuff's just better. No idea what specific model to get though.

I have a linksys router WRT54GS v2 currently with Tomato firmware (I've tried dd-wrt), and I constantly get disconnects from PSN and I'm unable to play games online (I also have NAT type 2). I've tried forwarding ports, putting the PS3 on the DMZ (All this on Wi-Fi), as well as putting a cat5 cable from router to ps3 and still no-go.

If I do a direct connection from cable modem to the PS3 everything works golden, but then I have no internet for the rest of the house :(.

Anyone know if there is a way to fix this problem? I really want to be able to play my PS3 games online, any help is much appreciated!

I have that same router with whatever firmware linksys shipped out of the box. I have no drops, no connection issues, etc. It's obviously something to do with your router, and more than likely the firmware you have on it.

Well I won't be any help, but I had the same router with the same problems. Where I would randomly disconnect, or it would randomly disconnect on of the computers that was hooked up to it. I was on the original firmware, upgraded the firmware to whatever they recommended and still had problems, mess with the settings and it never was resolved for me.

Now I run a Belkin N1 and it works like a charm. Had a D-link before also and that thing died after six months, though when it did work it was great till it stopped.

OK, if I use the component cables instead will it play Blu-Ray movies at 1080i? I'm thinking of just using component cables on my 1080i monitor then switching to HDMI when I eventually get a 1080p HDTV.

I'd been in Canada for so long I didn't realize they changed Hulu so you can actually queue up the video feed. that's awesome. If I ever find a way to get Hotspot Shield to work for me on the PS3 I'll be back on Hulu here back in Canada

I have a silly question. Can you only watch Blu-ray movies like Hulk over HDMI because that what it indicates in the PS3 manual; copyrighted material has to use HDMI to view? I have a tv that supports component only.

I'm fairly certain you _can_ view protected content over component, but it'll be restricted to 480i/p.

I'm pretty sure you can watch all CURRENT Blu Ray stuff over any connection. In the FUTURE they may turn on this HDCP stuff where it'll lower the resolution of the content if you don't have HDCP compatible hardware, but that's a few years off, from what the studios have promised. Even still it would look better than DVD though. (Note that this isn't just a Blu Ray thing, HD DVD had it too-the studios demanded it, although promised not to start requiring it on new releases for a while, given that so many people had older monitors and TVs that don't support it).

I view it the same way and I have zero issues. Enjoy.
