PSN has returned. What freebie games are you getting?

grrr. Trophies better sync fine. I went through Medal of Honor and MoH Frontline all through my weekend(thursday/friday) back at work now and it kinda sucks i lost all my blops time, lol. The worst part is that I couldnt get the Medal of Honor plat cuz it wouldnt let me do Tier1 mode without being signed in to psn. I even put blops in to scratch my itch and do some combat training, but you need to be signed in to do that, argh!

Sucks because I'm playing Mortal Kombat and Portal 2 and I haven't even gotten a chance to play MK online yet or redeem my kombat code. Portal 2 I can play on the PC, but I'll miss out on both PSN and Steam achievements if I can't get online. Not to mention all of those Socom players wanting to get online.

Guess I'll just have to finish Portal 2 on PC and replay it on PS3.

Yeah, even if it comes back today, it has been a pretty gnarly outage. Hope they secure it with this time so that it doesn't happen again (though probably only a matter of time).
Been itching for that Portal 2 co op since I beat the amazing SP.

That's true even the leap year thing was just 1 day. This is the longest I've ever seen psn down and I've been using it almost 4 years.
Now wait a second. Lets not get hasty here. There is nothing wrong with Linux. Their distros are the most stable and reliable OS' out there compared to Windows 7 and whatever Mac throws up this year. A lot of companies use Linux as their severs, because of it's stability. Even if your a home owner and console gaming is your preferred choice and don't worry about PC gaming (Or decent at running Wine ;)), Linux is the best choice. Hardly ever crashes, no viruses or spyware, boots up faster and is more capable of handling several projects without having 4+ gigs of memory because Windows 7 eats up more resources than a fat man at a Chinese buffet.

Maybe this'll teach Sony for removing something they had on the console, if that's what you're referring to, then that's your opinion. But don't bring the penguin into this one. He's a cool bird, in my opinion.
Oh, I agree w/everything you said about Linux. I think Linux is great, it's the Linux community that is the problem. Major companies are hesitant to make their hardware Linux-friendly, and this whole debacle just pushes them further away.

Shouldn't be a big deal. Portal 2 is only like an hour long anyways.

Sony really needs to contract out google or valve to rebuild the psn from the ground up entirely. Because I love my ps3, I love the fact psn is free and all but their online service is flakey at best. They always have problems with it, or mess up stuff with updates pushes or something.

They need to just get some smart people who know what they are doing to rebuild the whole thing with the future in mind for being simpler to impliment things, security, dev tools and the whole thing.

Just sonys online support has never been that good. Even back in everquest days the forums sucked, the support sucked and it all got worse once they stopped testing patches and just released them on live servers with no warning.

If sony could just get their act together with psn and their online setup they would a lot more fans. If they gave psn a overhaul and made it a lot more secure and stable, future proof it some and let all users have cross game chat they would have it made.

But even with all its problems I still love psn because I can play my games for free just like I do on my pc. Its why Ill never pay for xbl, not when I play pc and ps3 games for free.
Maybe I haven't followed close enough, but how did they change their story 3 times?

As far as I recall:

1.) They acknowledged that people are experiencing downtime with PSN
2.) They took down PSN for everyone and put up a maintenance message while they looked for the reason for the intermittent service
3.) They acknowledged that the initial downtime was due to an external intrusion and put the service into maintenance to find and resolve the issue.

There are no conflicts with any of those. It's a logical conclusion from one to the other in fact. I don't get how you can be so confused either. It's all written in plain English

Basically Anonymous or some other culprit hacked into PSN, either hammering the system, or some other exploit. This caused initial service outages for some but not all PSN users (I didn't get affected initially but others did). Sony discovered this, and shut it all down to get the issue fixed.
HAHA, you need to calm down man. And yes, you do need to follow a little bit closer.

id be all for waiting longer for psn to come back if they did like you suuggested. it sucks but itd be worth it to know itd be more secure and the service would run better. all i can say is ty for demon souls.

though i am curious what they will do if this outage goes into next week. will they put the tuesday update on another day or just lump it all into next week? will plus members get extra days added to their subs for the days psn has been down?

I agree. I refuse to pay $5, or probably less, a month for a far superior service.

I'm just hoping they take the time to update their god damned netcode. It's absolutely atrocious compared to Live's ability to work with any ISP.

Eh... I've never had any problems with psn like that. Are you sure you know what your talking about? ;)

there are a number of sites that no longer work with ps3s browser. you get that you need to update message or something i used to watch anime on megavideo and cant because of that. thats something i hope they can fix during the downtime.
Wait... people use PS3s browser? Mind blown.
I was thinking the same thing. I don't think that is what the other guy was talking about. I've got my pc hooked up to my hdtv so the ps3 browser is pointless.

I'm pretty sure he does know what he's talking about. You can have the best internet in the world, open up every single port imaginable for you games, making sure everything is legit. Even making sure it's in NAT 2. Or set up a DMZ.

And guess what, games still drop out for no reason, or lag and disconnects. I mean come on.

If you've never had problems on PSN, I'll go ahead and call you a bullshit liar. Or, you can come out and tell us what kind of setup you have and help some people out instead of giving smarts ass remarks.....Just saying.

I don't use a router. Nat 1 ftw! I remember having issues with my router is why I quit it,but it was the same result for live too and not just psn. Everything has a few issues its online, but it happens so rarely I just ignore it.

Day 3 without LittleBigPlanet 2.
WITHDRAWAL!!

Live and PSN have always worked about the same for me. I've probably been dropped out of games before on PSN, but it's happened so rarely I can't think of a specific instance it happened.

A couple of friends of mine from CAG and real life use the PS3's browser and I tried it while my PC was out of commission the one time while waiting for the restore discs to arrive.

I thought the browser was kinda sucky actually, but then again I still use IE on my PC, so maybe I'm just used to that sort of browser.

Plus this was before I had decided to plug in a USB keyboard to use with my PS3 and I was having to type anything and everything via the PS3 controller.:puke:
Wait... people use PS3s browser? Mind blown.
lol yeah i do sometimes thats how i was able to get that heavy rain dynamic theme for free. do i use it regularly hell no its clunky and slow but if they improved it i would use it more often. and it was convient to use so i could see the lastest episode of bleach witthout having to dl it. megavideo is a damn good site.

Compared to my PC, my download speeds are a third of what they are when I'm not proxied through my PC. A 25/25 up/down connection only maxes out at 16/8 on my PS3 proxied through my PC and 8/4 when PS3 to router. It's not my set up, it's the PS3.

People lag if I proxy when they connect to me in GT5 and MW2, I also can't host 17 other people on a public Ground Wars without lagging myself. The netcode is terrible, it really dislikes DSL in addition to fiber. The netcode on Live works because it uses windows based protocols which have been hammered on for years and are tried and true. There are no complaints from Live users like there are from PSN users about receiving their full speed from their internet connection.

never had a problem with my connection to PSN. I connect through WiFi and I kick ass in the FPS games I play (namely BF'43). I've heard mixed stuff of course, but that goes for all the systems.

I thought I had problems connecting to PSN but finally figured out that my ISP throttles my connection from 10MB down to about 2-3MB at night.

The other guy mentioned different things. You do know what your talking about. I noticed its speed is a shade slower than the pc,but it never really mattered much to me. I thought you was talking about connection issues and things of that nature. Not the speed. I've never hosted that big of a game either. I usually just play fighters or uncharted 2. It seems good enough/fine for those.

Think the built in wifi connection must just be finicky on the PS3. I have a fat PS3 one floor up above the room with the wireless router and a slim on the same floor as the router. The slim only really has one wall between it and the router. The fat has the floor and 2 walls between it. The slim downloads updates much faster than the fat PS3 even though they are each about the same distance from the router.
Wait... people use PS3s browser? Mind blown.
Yea, lets do some math here. Kid with Ps3 + Browser + internet + Parents at the Olive Garden = Porn.

I wonder if the severs just went overload with the release of 3 big games all on the same day?

Mortal Kombat's online is the weirdest I've ever seen. I played it in the afternoon and it was really good. Then I played it at night and it played like ass. I thought maybe my internet was acting up,but that wasn't it. I guess where its new to many people are on it at once is the only thing I can think of. It is true so many newer games just came out this week and down went psn.
I know you be trolling as usual. ;)
Yeah, pretty predictable.

But seriously, I'm nonplussed that Sony still hasn't fixed this shit. I wanted to buy Lumines Supernova, but I can't :(

Such a boring weekend. All I get to do is study law stuff and play a bit of Shinobi now.

I bought Mortal Kombat. Already beat Story mode and not interested in the other modes. I want to play it online and can't.

I've discovered two shows via Netflix and DVD that I otherwise wouldn't have gotten around to watching so soon. So...thanks, Sony/Anon/whoever :) That said, I'm really looking forward to some MW2 online as well as NTG.

It's been covered that there's nothing to fix. Sony is simply trying to think of what they can do to keep the hackers out. Most likely they have their programmers trapped in a jail cell with their computers, and until they build a firmware update that these hackers can't get through they won't have freedom.

I wonder what prison food in Japan is like?

Well I managed to make this outage worthwhile timewise I guess. I beat played and beat Enslaved, Jurassic: The Hunted, got part through Assassin's Creed II, finished a season of simming in NHL 11, half way through Singularity, played some Comet Crash, and played some Sims 3 realizing I don't like it at all.

Beat BFBC2 on normal and hard during this outage. ::pats self on back::

Now I just need the rest of the multiplayer trophies and I'll plat it.
