I don't really care all that much, if it reviews well I'll probably buy it on epic before the exclusivity is done. That said, as CEO wouldn't you think Pitchford would have a bit more pull than he's claiming there? It's probably somewhat outside of his hands but saying he's part of "just" the "talent" is not really accurate, unless he counts his porn inspired magic show as talent that contributes to the development of borderlands

Did developers really ever have much pull?

How many times have we seen dev's complain pub's put a certain DRM on their game? Larian did this numerous times w/ different publishers w/ their earlier Divinity titles and even CDP complained about Atari saddling Witcher games w/ DRM.

Not that I'm completely against the idea of purchasing a game off the Epic Store in the future, but I'm trying to think of what upcoming game it would take going temporarily exclusive for me to finally bite. Probably Yakuza Kiwami 2, Spelunky 2, or Hollow Knight: Silksong. Anything else I can wait out, but those three I'd get Day 1 on fucking Capsule if I had to.

Most games I wait out regardless just because there are very little games I'm willing to buy within the 1st month of launch, if there's a game I plan to buy in the 1st month I'll buy it on Epic. Might be bl3 depending how it reviews, not sure.

bet you all Heroes of Hammerwatch is humble monthly'd this friday

worst case scenario, i have a spare copy to make a friend play with me

I'm sure he 100% supported the decision anyway even if technically it's not his call. To claim he has no pull though is insanely disingenuous. It's not like Epic and Gearbox haven't had a working relationship before either. He's just preemptively passing the buck because he expected a shitstorm (hence why the agreement was all hush-hush until now). Dude's a fucking snake, as usual.

Wouldn't surprise me if 2K/Take Two did more shit like this. Expect RDR 2 for PC to be EGS exclusive unless Rockstar can make enough of a stink.

It really seems like AAA publishers are leveraging EGS to get Steam by the balls. Which I'm sure Epic is counting on and the reason why the benefits/features of the platform are 100% publisher-focused.

Borderlands was one of the first big games-as-a-service business models and yet it didn't come with any service. You were just paying -a lot- for expansions in what was mostly a single-player offline game.

You can say this of almost virtually any dlc though. I actually thought the playtime you got out of most of the dlc was fine, there was some very great and robust dlc (tiny tina, general knoxx) and some pretty poor and/or relatively short dlc (mad moxxi, hammerlock). All in all I didn't think the dlc was any better or worse than most games that get dlc. Most games it seems you pay more for the amount of content you get in dlc than the base game, it's not really a borderlands specific thing, the base game compared to the dlc is a steal typically in regards to value. Fwiw my biggest concern with BL3 is how they handle microtransactions/dlc/etc, but if they handle dlc like they did in BL2 (a couple of larger packs for ten-15 bucks each, microtransactions for skins, bite sized head hunter packs for 3-5 bucks) I'll be pretty happy with that.

Also fwiw I think a huge selling point for a lot of people is the lack of a shared world. There are enough of those out there (Anthem, Destiny 1/2, FO76, The Division 1/2) that have come out since BL2 released, and a lot of people just aren't interested in that. If it were shared world personally I wouldn't plan on buying it, I'll be very pleased if it works the same as the first two games.
The current gen is just about over. BL2 was the culmination of the previous gen, which was the PS3 and 360 era. They're going to need a better premise than "zomg millions of guns". Its fetch quests, kill quests, and over-reliance on monster closets are antiquated by today's standards. BL was usurped by the dynamism of Destiny or even Watch Dogs back in 2014.

As fun as point and shoot can be...there are dozens of games that do that effectively already.

About expansion packs as DLC's: I think Oblivion Knights of the Nine was out first - https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Knights_of_the_Nine

Also, BL games doing the looter-shooter thing took a lot from Hellgate: London's class(es) that allowed for 1st/3rd person looting-shooting.
You guys can say what you want. Borderlands was the mainstream originator of overpriced DLC that masqueraded as expansion packs. They set the AAA industry standard that has lasted until today. (Bioshock 2 and Mass Effect 2 are the other ones that come to mind whom quickly followed suit after BL1.)

Most people didn't buy the expansions when they were anything close to full price, either.

They must have lost their fucking minds if they think that'll I'll split the games between 2 shops.  1, 2, prequel and all the DLCs are on Steam.  I sure as hell ain't moving to the Epic Store for #3.

bl2 was in like the top 70 top sellers on steam in 2018 despite being 6 years old and being in multiple humble bundles and it still has a sizable player base, i think bl3 will probably do fine. citing a couple games that got mediocre reviews and were pretty maligned by the public despite commercial success is a bit odd tbh, i'm pretty sure people stopped caring about watch dogs like 2 weeks after it released

Don't get me wrong if BL3 is great then I'm going to buy it.   I'm not trying to talk shit about the series, but there is a lot to think about before investing into it.  It's an interesting conversation.  These $100+ games take serious consideration, especially when you know that it's going to be heavily discounted within a couple months after it launches.  If it's not damn good like a 9+ outta 10 then I should wait.

My worry is that these guys are originators of the high-priced DLC model. Randy Pitchford is certainly going to push the envelope even further this time.

I bought this at retail and it was a disappointment. It wasn't even the end of the DLC packages.

Yes, that's right, BL1 was the original modern $120 single-player game.

Wait, really?! So, actual gun skins!! I was being sardonic as usual--apparently I was also prophetic.

Well, BL1 was actually 100 dollars for everything, it was the 60 dollar base game and 4 ten dollar dlc packages. My biggest fear w/bl3 is they'll do a bunch of price gouging and all but considering you cited destiny as a game that's out paced it and you've stated it should be a shared world...be careful what you wish for i guess.

Also so because people weren't buying bl2 at full price in 2018 showing up as a best seller and having a decent player base 6 years after release doesn't matter? I think it's a pretty clear indication there's an audience for it

The BL1 DLC were of dubious value (especially Moxie) but they evolved past that delivering solid content DLC for BL2. Granted, I bought them in a discounted bundle... and besides not liking some of them thematically, I never felt they were cash-grabs/didn't deliver sufficient content for the price. The headhunter DLC are another thing. I first bought one a couple of Steam sales ago. Only paid 99 cents but still felt ripped off because it was maybe 30 minutes of missions and a boss. I have the feeling that DLC was intended to be free holiday content but 2K said, fuck it, let's charge people for them.

The problem with DLC is when you feel like the developers obviously cut stuff out of the main game or did not deliver enough content for the original price. Base Borderlands 2 (and BL1) was more than worth its $50ish price point.

freesync = AMD graphics cards

G-sync = Nvidia cards

If you cross an Nvidia card with a freesync monitor you won't see any benefits from that Variable Refresh Rate technology. But Nvidia recently released some updated drivers that allowed a handful of freesync monitors to work with their (G-sync-only) GPUs. Here is the list of freesync monitors that are now G-sync compatible:

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/g-sync-ces-2019-announcements/

There are only 17 models whose brand all start with "A" or "B", and your Dell is not one of them unfortunately.
I wanted to jump in here with my understanding, even though it's late. My understanding is that even though Nvidia only certified 17 monitors as ticking all their boxes, that most Freesync monitors seem to work just fine with Nvidia cards. I've been watching this carefully since I'm less than thrilled with my AMD options of late, and have been thinking of making the switch to team green. However with a relatively new Freesync monitor, I'd prefer not to have to replace that as well.

Ultimately, there are no guarantees it will work, so if you have the card and monitor, there's no harm in trying it. But if you're making a buying decision based on potential compatibility, it's a less clear decision.

Let me know if you're interested in the articles I've seen on the topic where other Freesync monitors were tested with Nvidia cards; not at my fingertips at the moment, but I can try to dig them up if you're interested.

GMG has a 5 games for a $1 build your own bundle going on. You have to keep clicking "Load more" at the bottom of the page to see all the available games. I managed to find 5 decentish games I didn't own so most people will probably find 5 too.

I picked up

FIVE: Guardians of David
Cross of the Dutchman
Elven Legacy
Rock 'N' Roll Defense
Herding Dog

Tremendous and cheap, like me.

You guys don't remember having to buy PC Gamers for the demo discs in order to unlock some new secret mystery level?  FFS, I bought the one for Black and White just for that one new animal God expansion.

I remember buying a magazine to get a disc with add-on mods (like bots and the grappling hook) for Quake.

There's a game series I'd like to see GOG pick-up: Black and White 1 & 2.

I'd want them to get Complete Editions, of course.

Dunno, but I remember buying multiple Neverwinter Night expansion packs. Pretty sure that was over $100 total.
I had NWN base, SOU, and HOTU from .

I eventually got NWN: Diamond free from GOG, which came with Kingmaker DLC/expansion set.

I didn't get the Premium Mods, unlike some gifted me the entire NWN: EE Collection.

Bah.. I still have the discs... I wonder if they'll work. Getting VtMB to work.. was.... disheartening. Even with the patches it only kinda works. Makes me wonder why I've kept my old discs. Baldurs Gate? Tie Fighter? Dune? Rebellion? All these discs.. and I can't play them because my computers are too good.

I'm still waiting for Gravy Trader. :(

lists check out, Id agree with most of those, except maybe beavis and butthead. I dont think I ever played it but I just cant imagine its worthy of 24/50 for 2 different lists

Black and White series.

Yeah, I still got my Black & White 1+2 discs also.

Could be worth checking their own PC Gaming Wiki, doing some messing around, patching it properly, using some fixes, and whatnot:

Black & White 1 on PCGW - https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Black_%26_White

Black & White 2 on PCGW - https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Black_%26_White_2

Also, this site has some info on how to deal w/ Black and White 1 for modern OS's - https://www.play-old-pc-games.com/2013/03/08/black-and-white/

I might have to mess around and get Black & White games going; I really liked those ones.

Bloodlines.

Personally, I never had much issues w/ VTMB. Just make sure you install Wesp's Patch or True Patch...then you should be good.

Vampire: Bloodlines on PCGW - https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Vampire:_The_Masquerade_-_Bloodlines

I think GOG version of Bloodlines is the easiest to use and install, as it comes w/ Wesp's Patch Basic version. You shouldn't have to do anything to get it going, since it comes equipped w/ that patch (which you will need just to boot the game). Just make sure if you get it on GOG and you actually do decide to use GOG Galaxy, make sure you disable automatic updates for that game on Galaxy - as saves become broken w/ each new release of Wesp's unofficial patch. You might want to manually update the game yourself via GOG Galaxy, when need be - i.e. after you actually finish a play-through of the game.

For modding purposes when you're not using Wesp's Basic Patch, though - it could be easier to install the retail version (and then jump it to Official Patch 1.2) or the Steam-version (which comes w/ Official Patch 1.2, eliminating the updating step). Then from there, you can install whatever mod or unofficial patch you really need.

Baldur's Gate 1.

I actually have BG1 on multi-CD's from retail and from D&D Master Collection on Gamersgate (DRM-FREE there).

Baldur's Gate on PCGW - https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Baldur%27s_Gate

Man, I really hate dealing w/ installs off multi-CD's. Real pain in the neck to install and whatnot...and then have to actually update (go find patches) and then install mods.

Never really messed around w/ BG for modern OS's, actually.

It might and could be easier to just get the BG: EE version.

Other Stuff.

I can't really speak on Tie Fighter, Dune, and Rebellion - ain't got those.

Oh, man. Nostalgia City.

I have a ton of PC Gamer Demo Discs and their Magazines, somewhere. They're all in a box somewhere. I'd have to go dig it out and actually find it.

On a good note, 2K/Gearbox just saved me almost a years worth of updates/preorders.  Having these timed exclusives means I'll just be that much more of a CAG.

I was honestly just browsing around to put in an order for BL3 on PC at BB for 20% off.  The "Super Deluxe" version for $99.99 comes with the season pass at least, and you can always cancel whenever.  Then I remembered that I only get console games for 20% off because PC games are Epic Store exclusives now.

not surprised at how they are continuing to string us along for the ride

Gearbox said we will found out more about “Borderland 3’s” story, characters, gear and more during an extended gameplay livestream on May 1.

announcement March 28, official pricing and release date April 3 and now wait for more May 1

also not surprised at the tier system nor pricing (except for the $249 level) as this follows what others are doing in the industry.  I will say that it is a decent move to initially give the people preordering a discount on the super deluxe version.

considering that Epic will have PC exclusivity, being a CAG, it may be better to wait until April 2020 to purchase as hopefully not having Epic exclusivity and it being out for 7 months will result in a lower price tag at that point.

Borderlands 3 legit has me concerned about microtransactions AND the quality of the game at this point.  I blindly preordered the last two but this time around I am glad I do not feel the urge to do so.  My friends that I played the other games with will definitely buy it and play day one but I'm sure plenty of people will wait for Steam and sales so there will be someone to play with if it turns out to be a good game.  Some people resell console games pretty fast too so I could always pick up a used copy for PS4 or something to see the story and then pick it up on Steam later if it seems like I'll put a bunch of hours into it.
