What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Amazon or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Blockbuster's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Blockbuster store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (BBVto Amazon to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from BBV.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Most regular Blockbuster stores do not sell new hardware at all. They did a year ago or so and some may still have some of that stock, but they have stopped bringing in more to sell. They also no longer sell new games except for a few selected preorders. Regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.
I found out that some employees are holding games for themselves. They are keeping the games in a drawer.

I saw a Wii DK country in the drawer when he opened it and he told me that it was his co-worker's game. There were 30+ games in the drawer that there were not for sale to the public. Games were only 20% off at this time.

Is this legal? Can I do something to buy the games?
If it's that important to you, you could call the district manager or something. Doubt anyone will care too much. At this point they obviously don't have to make you happy to keep you as a customer.

It's not illegal to not sell you something, just because you want it. It's also not illegal for the other example to change the price of an item. It's not like they advertised 24.99. then when you got there it was 40.

In both cases you could argue that it's possibly unethical, but there's nothing not legal about it at all.

Unless of course you're BB Inc. who could effectively press charges by claiming that by intentionally keeping for-sale items from customers who would pay the current price these employees are actually stealing. Moreover, considering that the company is currently in bankruptcy and the Court is free to determine what creditors get what money, these employees are actually stealing from BB's creditors. That's just my legal brain working though.

They could very well be breaking the company's policy. That seems somewhat of a given, though. Few, if any, businesses have a policy of don't sell to a customer willing to buy.

That's why I said to contact the district manager or someone in a similar position with the company, because that is who would be interested in doing something about it. That their company is bankrupt, and they're likely out of a job as well, though, is why I say they might not be too interested in doing anything about it.

That an employee denies a customer a sale is not theft, though, no matter how you argue it. Breaking the policy and guidelines could get him fired, but he's not being brought up on charges for it.

Only if they deny a sale for business reasons within the scope of their employment. Making a decision for their own gain, with the intent of getting the game cheaper for themselves down the line is illegal. They won't be prosecuted, but it's illegal.

Only once they actually buy it for themselves at a lower price could it be argued that they've actually broken a law. Unless someone else is in on it too, which I guess you could argue the guy who said they belonged to his friend was a participant. Then you could argue conspiracy which began as soon as an action was made towards the end goal, like putting games in a drawer.

You're really splitting hairs though, and you'd have to prove that they intended to deny blockbuster of their rightful property through the deception. Good luck with that, if you're so inclined.

It would not only never be prosecuted, but it would likely never be arrested for.

The idea that they can only deny a sale for business reasons within the scope of their employment is within the guidelines of a company's policy. You can punish within the company for breaking the policy, but just by denying a sale no law has been broken.

Of course, I don't know your particular state's laws, but I can guarantee here that there is no revised code what so ever that states that a blockbuster employee must sell anything that is in stock. It's not a felony, or a gross misdemeanor, or a misdemeanor, or even an infraction.

Come on man just let it go. As someone who lost a job due to a company filing for bankruptcy last year I can tell you it's a horrible thing to go through. It's not like you won't find a better deal on donkey kong down the line anyway.

Yeah NO DOUBT MAN!! In fact a friend of mine was working at one of the local Hollywood Videos that closed down a year ago and he openly admitted he stashed a pile of games, movies, and blu-rays too get cheap towards the end. Normally i'd be against this but come on these people are LOSING THEIR JOBS!!

It's bullshit, I know, but that's one of the perks these employees have on their final days of employment.

Unless they get transferred to another store what would corporate do to them? Fire them?

What I find more annoying is that at virtually every closing store it wasn't just employees holding shit. They were holding stuff for their families/friends as well.:bomb:

But what can you do short of calling corporate and complaining? Oh wait....;) After all, supposedly these sales are being conducted by the company themselves and not one of the usual liquidation companies, so I would think corporate would love to hear about them losing potential sales because of people holding products.:D

Again, I DO think it's bs for employees to hold shit for themselves but since many of them will likely be losing their jobs for good soon I'll give them that much. But the ones holding shit for friends and family who don't work for the company is BULLSHIT.
That an employee denies a customer a sale is not theft, though, no matter how you argue it. Breaking the policy and guidelines could get him fired, but he's not being brought up on charges for it.
Try this experiment. Go to Target, stash a game(even one from the clearance shelf), then go tell an employee what you did. Stashing(or hiding in the drawer to buy later at a cheaper price)stuff in a retail store is on the same level as shoplifting. You're denying another customer the chance to buy that item for the higher price and denying the company a potential sale at that price.
Man there getting fired and you upset because their holding games you want......I would just let this one slide
I'm not upset...you're assuming too much...I'm more curious about what games are in the drawer. Curious cat = me. DK Country is just game I saw...I'm not interested in buying that game.
If it's that important to you, you could call the district manager or something. Doubt anyone will care too much. At this point they obviously don't have to make you happy to keep you as a customer.
Gotcha. It's certainly aggravating, I agree. It's not cool of them to do that, but whatcha gonna do? Y'know?

You could choose not to give them your business, but they're used to that. People deciding not to give them business is why they're where they're at.

Actually what got them into the situation they're in now is the same reason Circuit City and the rest of the failed chains failed: gross mismanagement.

Of course, in BBV's case it also didn't help that Netflix/Redbox/Gamefly came on the scene and took away a good portion of their business.

I mean, who is going to pay $5+ to rent a year old game when you could buy it and keep it for just a few bucks more from Gamefly? Same deal with DVD's/Blu-Rays, why pay so much for a rental when there's a Redbox on every corner just about now that rents out DVD's for $1 a night and BR's for $1.50 a night.

They failed to adapt to the changing rental market and just now are attempting to play catch up by putting in kiosks to rent DVD's out of. But is it too little too late? That's what I guess we'll see soon enough.

It's ironic that now BB is being driven out of business by places that rent for a buck or so a night.

I found a Halo Reach with some Recon Helmet code intact for 24 at a closing BB. Does anyone think there'll be a better deal anytime soon or will it hold it's MSRP value for awhile? I still have some catching up to do in the series so it's not a rush to get the game, but I don't want to pass up a deal and wait forever for a good bargain on it.

It's funny to think that Netflix actually approached BB several years ago wanting to partner up with them. BB laughed them out of the building.

Those BB Kiosks are popping up at most of the Quiktrip gas stations in our area. I've heard that BB doesn't even own them. It's some 3rd party company that is essentially paying them for the rights to use the BB name.

Speaking of BB, I need to stop by the one in Liberty MO. I haven't been in there much since I spent the last of the credit I built up when the trade values were awesome.

IIRC, Netflix actually proposed to BBV a $20 million deal where BBV buys them out. Terrible move on their part.

Seems like the only thing that could save them, but I bet Netflix would just start the same business with a different name and aggressively plant them all over the place.

Everyone always mentions this. But do they know Blockbuster already had/does this program? AND it includes games which Netflix doesn't. Sure the program probably sucks, but in BB eyes why would they buy/partner when they already had/have a similar program?

The problem with BBV's mail service is that there is no instant view. That ended up being what pushed me towards Netflix. I had been considering BBV due to it having games but the instant viewing on my XBox beats that out.

Because they had no fulfillment expertise. This actually happens all the time. If you can't beat em, buy them.

BBV's issue was arrogance and bad management.

Well, my store dropped games to 40%, and strangely, got more games in. But still, nothing of great interest.

Although I did buy a big ass box of garbage can liners (like 400 of the giant size bags) fir $10, and a brand new tape gun for $4.

I'm not 100%, but I'm fairly certain Netflix started the mail order service before BB did, and BB only started one up to compete. (And at first it really, truly did, it was cheaper and every dvd you returned in store earned you a free rental and your next item was shipped). I actually canceled Netflix for a bit and went with BB, but then they took away that perk, and the prices went up, and the DVDs started shipping slower and slower. Actually, now that I'm thinking about it I recall that the DVDs nearly tripled in shipping time the very day after my trial ended. Only stayed with them like a month. Netflix launched instant shortly after and now I would never pick BB over it, even with games.

I guess I'm one of the few people who likes BBV's online rental service. I don't mind the 3 month wait for new game titles and I guess I benefit from having a shipping center about 90 minutes away from my house, so the turnaround time is 2-4 days after a game has been received.

Well, that's the funny thing. We have had Netflix for a few years, but two weeks ago the closing BBV convinced my GF to sign up for the free trial for their online service.

On Friday, we sent back both a movie from Netflix and a movie from Blockbuster. Both were going the 30 miles or so to Pittsburgh, both PO Boxes that are only a few trailing digits apart (BBV = 535401, Netflix = 535304). Netflix showed up Monday, BBV showed up yesterday.

To some people, one day may not seem like that big of a deal but working from home, we watch alot of movies. Netflix has consistently had a one-day turnaround, and our second movie from Blockbuster (the first one from a mailed in return), and they take an extra day.

As far as their games, by the time the 3-4 month wait is up, I'd much rather go out and buy the game at a (more than likely) decent price cut and keep it.

Hit up the Blockbuster around the corner that actually isn't going out of business (at the moment) and FINALLY found a Guitar Hero Van Halen PS3 for $9.99. Been looking for that price point forever. Played a couple songs last night and thought it was a lot of fun.

I thought I'd weight in on the BBV/Netflix conversation:

1) Watching corporations over the years, especially "Great" ones like Southwest Airlines and Tivo - I find a typical progression that every corporation goes through. They start out generous, with phenomenal customer service and deals that shame their competitors because they're hungry and eager. As they grow, they inevitably start "trimming the fat" to please investors, and "profit" takes over as a motivation rather than "growth". All of that is to say: I predict when Blockbuster inevitably dies and Netflix is competing only against themselves that these outstanding turnaround times and excellent cusotmer service take a slide as well.

2) BBV not buying Netflix - Again, from what I've seen and read in this post - it is almost inevitable that if BBV tried to buy Netflix the FCC (FTC?) would have shut the deal down due to monopolistic concerns anyway. I would bet BBV's lawyers advised them the deal would never go through, but even if they didn't, I seriously doubt anybody should be kicking themselves over this because it probably would have just ended up being a massive waste of time and resources anyway. Look at AT&T trying to buy TMobile right now. Even with 4 competitors currently in the marketplace there is a massive wait while the Government decides whether or not it would be too harmful to the competitive environment.

I don't think this would have been denied. At the time Netflix was a minor player in the dvd rental business. BBV's competitors were other b&m chains. Heck, BBV tried to buy HWV. And HWV was a lot larger than Netflix at that time. A Netflix deal would have easily gone through.

They are being driven out by online rentals like netflix, itunes, video on demand, and even gamefly.

These were probably posted but I went to two stores today, games were 40% off, I don't remember all the titles (they had very little) but with the discount, Fable III and Fallout New Vegas were around $30. Not that good of a deal. But I am pretty happy that I got 20 DS cases and 15 PSP cases for $7.

Fail, the only BB in my area thats closing had the most ripoff prices i have ever seen. They STILL wanted 35$ for used copies of Fallout:NV that looked like they had been chewed on by a 5 year old. (And they didnt even have the cases, they were all in the Pre-pack clear cases).

Aside from that, it was a bunch of old PS2 shovelware.
blockbuster near me still has its ps3 they close in 2 weeks. Anyone been able to score the ps3 they keep instore?
They usually want $200+ for the store model PS3 IF they sell it, so chances are you're better off with Amazon's Warehouse Deals site.

At least there you may get a bundle(console, games, extra controller perhaps) for the same price or a little more and it may be in like new condition.

With the ones from Blockbuster you have to ask yourself if you want to take a chance on something that's likely been on for 12-16 hours a day or more and may be weeks/months from dying or something that may well be pretty much brand new but cheaper than MSRP.

the PS3 is about the only thing that has never been available for sale as it gets sent back to our distribution center.

the 40" sony tv can be had for $200 as a store that starts the closing process tomorrow is gonna be selling it for that price.

down to 3 stores in my area from the 10 we had just a couple years ago.

Last year I scored a ps3 new in the box for $160 from a closing bbv, no joke. It was priced at $180 but range up cheaper, the manager was pissed because he just bought a blu ray player for $200.

It was an older model with a small hard drive and a non-rumble ps3 controller, but was a perfect gift for my sister for Christmas.

Just visited my BB today to return Homefront, while looking around to find a new game to rent; I found a huge bin of "New/Sealed" games for just $5 each.

I scored Soul Calibur IV, Lego Batman and EDF 2017 all in amazing condition.:)

Although, it could just be only my BB that does this. Why? I live on Guam.
Wow, $200 for a 40" sony is a good deal.
Considering the thing is on for ~12 hours a day, 7 days a week, no, it's not. Those TVs have very little life left in them.
But that TV has been on 12-14 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Caviat emptor.
LCD tv manufacturers claim a lifetime of 30,000 to 60,000 hours for their sets. And that's to reach half it's initial brightness. A tv left on 14 hours a day x 365 days a year would equal 5,110 hours per year. So lets say the sets at BBV only have 30,000 hours because the tv is using it's brightest settings. If this set is only 2 or 3 years old, there is still a lot of life left in it because you'll most likely turn the brightness down and run it a whole lot less per day.

So yah, $200 for a 40" LCD hdtv is a pretty good deal.

Not only that, but wouldn't that mean it was a fully BC unit? If so they sell for extra since they're not made anymore...you should have done a flip and sold it and used that money to buy another PS3.

They've typically wanted $400 for the tv from the PS3 displays at the closing BBV stores by me. Considering you can get the same size tv for about that price NEW it's just ridiculous.

I found out thanks to family today that the other BBV down the line from me(Edwardsville, PA) is closing as well. I wonder if their employees realized they didn't jack up the prices on the games yet and do so already or if I could swoop in and grab a $12 or under copy of Fallout New Vegas.

Either that or I just steal back the copy I'm letting a buddy borrow.:D

I don't mean to thread crap, but please do not believe the Manufacturer's claims/hype. They are only claims...they carry no weigh. It is not a guarantee. Some of these claims are under ideal situations or guess estimates....they don't test the lifetime by just turning on the TV and seeing when it dies. There isn't enough time to test that way.....example 100,000 hrs lifetime divided by 8760 (24 x 365) hrs per year....means the TV was on for 11.42 years!!!!! BS!!!!!! They didn't have a LED TV 11 yrs ago.

Just like MPGs for cars...it's all BS.

PLUS-the heat from the TV being on 11.42 hrs a year will damage the circuits much faster than the guess estimates.

I just tried out the BB online deal on a two week free trial.

Nowhere in the fine print does it say exchanging mailed games for in-store games costs anything. I went to exchange in store and when they rung up the games they came up as %50 off. I guess that's not bad, but I was expecting free so I had them reverse the charge. It also didn't help that shipping took 3 days to get from Mansfield to Columbus (1 hour drive).

I've also tried Gamefly and their shipping takes the same amount of time (from Pittsburgh, 3 hours away). Their advantage is that you can get just-released games, while Blockbuster makes you wait around 2 months. I won't be sticking with either service since the turnaround time is just too long.

I know when I used Netflix I'd drop the envelope in the mail and another movie would be shipped the next day. Now that's good business turnaround.

Three days is NOT that long of a time. That's about average speed for first class mail. I would have to think that Gamefly/BBV do that to make sure someone sends back their prior rental FIRST and that they receive it BEFORE sending out the next one.

I can't say I blame them since they want to keep the shrinkage down to as low of a rate as they can.
