What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Amazon or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Blockbuster's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Blockbuster store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (BBVto Amazon to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from BBV.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Most regular Blockbuster stores do not sell new hardware at all. They did a year ago or so and some may still have some of that stock, but they have stopped bringing in more to sell. They also no longer sell new games except for a few selected preorders. Regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.

BB would have been a great deal if you could exchange games in store, but like I said, 3 days delivery time is unacceptable when their shipment facility is literally one hour away.
Just visited my BB today to return Homefront, while looking around to find a new game to rent; I found a huge bin of "New/Sealed" games for just $5 each.

I scored Soul Calibur IV, Lego Batman and EDF 2017 all in amazing condition.:)

Although, it could just be only my BB that does this. Why? I live on Guam.
wow, that is an awesome deal...might have to take a trip out to one of my Blockbusters...

Can you buy points cards or any of those restaurant or movie $25/$50 cards with trade in credit? I know you can't purchase them with gift cards but does that apply to our trade in credit as well?

Went to a closing store today and they had games for 40% off but nothing left that I wanted. Ended up getting 10 more PS3 cases for a dollar.

Just got back from the Gainesville, VA BB and they had a big STORE CLOSING sign posted. What a shame, the location made it real convenient to being able to return mailed movies and pick up newer releases. Now I guess I'm stuck with the 28 day holding period of netflix.

Games wise, there were a few titles (ie FFXIII, Transformers and some wii games) but that was about it. I suspect even those won't last too much longer.

you can do whatever you want, whether or not the employee wants to / knows how to is ymmv

How does this answer my question at all lol, this is the most generic answer one could give. I can't "do whatever I want", I can't buy a new PS3 at BBV for $100 and depend on the employee to WANT to override and sell it to me for that price, this stuff isn't ymmv.

I'm asking what the store policy is, not 'if by chance it works with an employee' or not.

Short answer truly is whether or not the employees at that particular store will allow you to buy gift cards with store credit. If they will, then buy them and be happy they allow it, since they don't usually let me do that around here.

There is no set corporate policy that's enforced 100% across the chain, in other words. So your best bet is to try it for yourself.

i did know the answer. if both of you guys arent savy enough to understand then you guys must both work at the same blockbuster

Thanks Dino, IATCG, and Donkey for your answers, I'll try ringing it up one of these days. I just vaguely recalled a few years ago it was okay, during the vanilla visas, but didn't know if anything changed since then.

And I like how the comeback to my question is that I work at blockbuster. If I worked there wouldn't I know??? :applause::lol:

Edit: Best part of you insulting Dino and myself for working at blockbuster (since it's apparently laughable to work there), is that some of the biggest contributors to this thread have or still do work at blockbuster and gave us heads up on deals and TIV changes. Contributions that you probably have benefited greatly from. Something's wrong with kids these days. At least I hope you're a kid.
Fairlawn, OH store started closing today. Final day for them is April 10th.
That must be when the leases run out for many stores, since both of the local ones that're closing have the same final day.
That must be when the leases run out for many stores, since both of the local ones that're closing have the same final day.
Add another one onto that April 10 list.

April 10th is the last day for all the stores in the process of closing. All remaining stores are supposedly "safe" at least for a little while.

You aren't supposed to be able to buy any Giftcards, points cards, restaurant cards with store credit but not everyone knows that and there is nothing the computer does to prompt us not to. So it's worth a shot but don't be surprised if u get shot down.

Heads up to anyone that has any giftcards or value cards left. Due to the pending sale beginning April 6 Bbv may no longer accept ANY giftcards. We received a memo stating this but we won't know a definite answer til the sale goes thru on apr 4. So basically go find something to use ur giftcards on.

I haven't had BBV credit in a long ass time. But I was always paranoid BBV would do this back when I had loads of giftcards.

For you guys looking to spend your BBV giftcards, I bet lots of stores still have Twilight and Justin Bieber framed artwork posters.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there usually a B1G1 around the end of April or May? Or is it June? .... Or am I just making this up, lol. ;)

yes, can we bring it back to why I still follow this thread?
it's been months of me checking this thread's bumps, only to be disappointed that CAGs are picking up game cases and NHL 1997 for 40% off.

Haha, me too. I keep seeing it bumped and get excited only to see MORE store closing posts. I really think there should be two different threads, one for BBV deals and another one to discuss store closings.
LCD tv manufacturers claim a lifetime of 30,000 to 60,000 hours for their sets. And that's to reach half it's initial brightness. A tv left on 14 hours a day x 365 days a year would equal 5,110 hours per year. So lets say the sets at BBV only have 30,000 hours because the tv is using it's brightest settings. If this set is only 2 or 3 years old, there is still a lot of life left in it because you'll most likely turn the brightness down and run it a whole lot less per day.

So yah, $200 for a 40" LCD hdtv is a pretty good deal.
Those lifespan estimates are load of bunk, as they don't take into consideration the electronic innards. My original HDTV was a rear projection model that lasted a paltry 6yrs, and that's after having a part on the motherboard replaced about 3yrs in. I have a 4yr old 32" Panasonic LCD, that occasionally shuts off a few seconds after turning it on. Aside from that it works fine, but the truth is, things made today are disposable junk.
Whether it's a TV or a refridgerator, the life expectancy is nowhere near what they used to be because everything's made in China.
So yeah, $200 sounds like a nice price, but the buyer should be prepared to toss it in the trash at any moment. Especially considering how much use that store model TV has seen.

Six years for a rear projection actually isn't that bad. I do agree somewhat that things today just aren't built to last. I was actually told by a cell phone salesman that they are only "built to last about a year". I was also told by somebody else that my receiver was "only built to last a few years". WTF.

Anyway I don't think $200 is all that bad, but with places like Target having TV's constantly on clearance you can get one for around $300-$400 brand new.

I think 6yrs was horrible considering I paid $1500 for it at the time. I also bought the extended warranty for 4yrs, which thankfully covered the little piece that went on the motherboard about 3yrs in.
In the meantime my mom still has her 27" Sony that's around 25yrs old and works fine. It really sucks how companies aren't looking to build a quality product that lasts anymore.
But it's up to the buyer on whether they want to roll the dice. A $200 TV is nice, but there's no guarantee it's going to work 3 months from now, and there's no returning it if there's a problem. Plus like you said, clearance TVs can be found for pretty cheap, not to mention the prices on theses things have been falling drastically.

I had a 20" SDtv that lasted me from the early 90's up till about 6 years ago. THAT is what I consider getting my money's worth out of an electronic item.

I still DO NOT see how people can justify repeatedly rebuying these junk items(see: PS2 last gen, 360 this gen) that're produced nowadays. That just rewards the companies passing off these shoddily produced pieces of shit with more of your money and doesn't do anything to get quality standard to increase at all.

If I pay a good sum of money for an electronic device, that thing better practically get up n dance to amuse my ass and do so for at least a decade without fail.

But as I said above, with people rebuying junk items that last 2-3 years at most without even looking into a possible class action suit against the manufacturer to at least compensate them for a portion of the cost to replace the item, then people are getting what they deserve for rebuying the same shit over and over.

Well, Corndog_McGee and JKSonic should be happy. At least the thread is no longer talking about closing stores!

/ I have a 1970 Zenith 27" wooden cabinet model that still works.
Well, according to my friend that works at a store, Blockbuster as a whole will stop accepting its gift cards after April 6th. Can anyone confirm?
Friday a communication came through that said that April 6th is the last day that Blockbuster will be accepting gift cards. The memo should be displayed on the front counter of the stores. The memo also said that the reason that they are doing this is because they are not sure that whoever purchases the company will have a gift card program in place and it's not a big deal. I'm sure everyone believes that. So if you have gift cards I would use them up.

Saw signs posted to that same effect at a store yesterday. I think I've exhausted all my Value Card credit anyway, but this is a shame. Oh, well.

Bah, that's nothing. We're still using our Sony 27" TV from the early 90's. I think my dad bought it for us when we moved into our first house. It's been carried around and back and forth to various states too. These new-fangled expensive HDTV thingies sure are not as durable as those old tube TVs - but that's really no surprise given the different tech... What I find really frustrating is that these new TV's have software issues - which of course was never a problem in the good 'ol days. We have a brand new Vizio LED TV (that we bought when our 6 year old rear projection HDTV crapped out last year) and the freaking thing acually crashes. WTF!? It will freeze and up reset itself every so often and frequent use of Netflix hoses it up and only a memory reset fixes it (which is why I'm pretty sure it is a software problem).

Anyway... back on topic... I just wanted to report that my local BBV is still in business with no sign of store closing. Not that I've been in there in a few months, but there you go...

I have a bad feeling that we may have seen the end of the B1G1 with these changes though.
Fairlawn, OH store started closing today. Final day for them is April 10th.
Sort of surprised by this. I was told once this was the most profitable store in Ohio.

My local store is staying open and they are getting the vast majority of our district's stock from closing stores. Four total that are definitely safe for now... not sure about the ones I didnt frequent.

One of the BBV that I haven't been to in a while is closing. I stopped by to look around and was sad to see that the game section was basically cleaned out at a whopping 10% off. I think they probably shipped out alot of stuff to other stores since the store seemed really empty. The only thing that caught my eye was the guide section. They still have a couple of Fallout 3 CE (among other recent guides).

Well if you can't beat'em, join'em...

Anyway what I meant was that 6 years wasn't ever bad for rear projection TVs...past or present. I don't know of one person who has had there's for much longer without either needing an expensive recalibration or having to buy parts.

As I said I agree that many new electronics just aren't built to last...it's insane. My longest working (with regular use) piece of hardware was my 19" Sony TV I bought around 1997 that just died earlier this year. Like I said though that got TONS of use through the years. Was the first TV I bought myself and it started out as my gaming TV and then migrated to the bedroom TV.

Only problem is that every closing BBV I've been to the guides are NEVER discounted unless they somehow last till the end of the sale. There's always been a big sign saying NO DISCOUNT over the top of the guide rack(s).

Yah, I'm still rolling with a 32" Panasonic that we bought in 1997 as our bedroom set. That was our main set until we bought a 46" Sony LCD projection tv in early 2007. The Panny replaced a 27" Sansui that we bought in 2002 and is now stored in our basement. The Sansui replaced a 19" Zenith that my parents bought in 1983! That Zenith was my main set until my wife and I bought the 32" Panny. That Panny is great to play NES and Genny/CD/32X games on.

So yah, modern tech hasn't shown that it has the longevity of the old crt technology. But to be honest, it hasn't been around that long to prove itself in the first place. And also to be fair, most crt sets became secondary sets (at least with my friends and family) by the time they reached ten years old. So they had much less use (abuse?) and were able to last another decade with relatively few problems.

I keep a tv and play it till it's dead/dying. That's what happened with my 20" Sharp tv that I had from easily the late 80's and into the early 2000's sometime. Only reason I stopped using it was that the tv would either be too bright or dark to watch. Otherwise I'd probably STILL be using it.

Funny thing is I put it out at the curb for garbage pickup the one night and it(and a completely dead microwave) was picked up by someone with a lil pickup truck within 20 minutes.

If the one I have currently goes, I have at least 2 backups. One I bought from Salvation Army for $15(19") that works well once it warms up and a 27" that I picked up from a closing HWV for $10.:D

Like I said, not all become secondary sets. I did use that Zenith for a good four years past it's first decade as my main set. And it was still pretty good. The only reason why there are so many cheap crt's available now is that people are replacing them with HDTV's. Otherwise, most used crt's would still be kept by the original owners until they died and the available sets would be shit. It's a great time for tv bargin hunters right now.

Not at the local Salvation Army stores it's not. Aside from the one store down the line from me that prices 36" SDtv's for $50 most of the ones round here want $40-ish for 20" SDtv's.:whistle2:#

Wow, that's too bad.

I don't check with thrift stores, but I often check out my local craigslist (Detroit area). I can find plenty of 19"-20" sets for $15 to $25. And 27" sets go for $25 to $50. Of course you do find a person who wants $150+ for a five+ year old 27" or 32" set.

My BBV is only doing 10% discounts on their guides. Why is it that getting stores to discount strategy guides is like pulling teeth? I swear to god Walmart's had the same Halo Reach LE guide sitting up for $34.96 for like six months, and there's all those stories about Gamestop banning people for trying to buy penny guides... no matter how badly guides sell, it seems like stores would rather burn them all in a big pile than lower the prices on them even a cent before doing so.

I've located a few people giving away tv's on CL around here before, but most of the ones giving them away have issues, like it turns off after 10 minutes or something.

Although the one chick was giving away a 32" LCD, but the screen was cracked. A proper replacement screen would've cost almost as much as a new LCD tv.

Today, the closing BBV by my house dropped Bluray's to 25% off. Of all the closings, this is the farthest I've seen them go. And there are still 2 weeks left until they close.

I agree that 10% is pretty weak, however a store that is doing well has more incentive to penny the guides out because they essentially get credit for that unsold guide that they ripped the cover off of and threw away to buy more, newer guides with.

Blockbuster has no incentive to do this since they will never be able to use that credit - and in fact that credit will more than likely go towards paying their debt rather than providing new products.

I actually just picked up the 1970 Zenith from a guy on CL. I originally wanted one with a giant dial on the front, but this one was too cool to pass up. It has a single toggle button to change the channel on the front, the backlit number dial spins above it. The set also came with a giant chrome four button "clicker" remote.

My plan is to re-finish the cabinet and put it in the spare bedroom. Then I can put on some Donkey Kong pajamas and sit on my bean bag while playing the Atari on Saturday mornings. :joystick:

 We used to have a Zenith with the backlit number dial in the 80's at my old house and where we live now some fuckwad dumped off their old SDtv in the gutter(it's standing up over there).

I'm tempted to go get it n see if it works.
