Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Opposing Force CD-keys cannot be registered through Steam. Opposing Force was included in a retail Half-Life package. The Half-Life CD-key included in the package will unlock all of the games in that package, including Opposing Force.
Note: Only the retail games listed above can be registered through Steam. No other retail games can be registered and downloaded using Steam.
That's disappointing, but I'd rather wait for a polished game. My husband and I want to play together, so they've got two sold copies when they release it.
Generally I support developers delaying games to ensure quality. However in this case I find it kind of annoying because they said part of the reason for the delays was they switched focus to finishing the XBLA version. I think its kind of crap to delay a game with a release date to switch focus to releasing a different game.....then again I guess they are a very small developer still and may have needed the funds.
If I purchase something as a gift, can I redeem it for myself later?
Didn't see if this was already answered, but yes you can. I've done it before and I'm still holding onto 3 Fallout New Vegas DLC gifts because I haven't my hard copy of the main game. Just send it to your own email addy and redeem when necessary.

Picked up Classics Pack 4 and then cherry-picked Ristar (looks like a cute simple platformer) and Fatal Labyrinth (definitely up for a dungeon crawler on my PC). Also through in AP and Sonic 3D Blast (played the hell out of that game on Windows 95!)

Total was 6.59, so not bad for 13 old-schools and a full-blown stealth-and-shoot game
Alien Solider for $.74!!!
This is a treasure classic originally unreleased in the U.S ... it's like a boss centric, deeper contra/gunstar heroes.

EDIT:
Just get Genesis Classics pack 4...
it's got almost all of the top class genesis games for $1.87
Ah! Thanks for the heads up! I was already going to get Shining Force 1 and 2. An extra ~$.40 for Gunstar Heroes and Alien Soldier (and some other stuff) is totally worth it!

Also picked up Alpha Protocol, because I'm a weak, weak little man.
I don't understand why it says 3.4 gigs. I just initiated the download and it was altogether a bit under 200MB. (I own all the titles in the pack + sonics).
The Sega Classics folder under steam/steamapps is 187 MB. For some reason if you look at the game's Disk Usage in your Steam Library it reports 3740 MB. Kind of odd.

Gosh.. all this talk about the Sega Genesis Classics made me wish Steam had "Beyond Oasis". Personally, would've been an instant buy for Sega Genesis pack just to relive the nostalgic memories.

Shining Force 1 & 2 still hold up to today's standards for me. I replay them frequently and just bought them in the Steam pack. I wish they would release SF2 on a portable platform already.

Picking up the smaller genesis pack 1 and 4. 4 seems the best by far, mostly getting the first one cause of comix zone, but I figure for a dollar extra I should get some fun out of those other 9 games too. Also thinking about getting the Empire & Napoleon total war collection. Already have Empire, but buying that package is cheaper than just napoleon and the DLC.

I believe that Microsoft now has a policy were anything released on their system has to be released at the same time or earlier than other platforms. So in other words if the PC version is complete it can't be released until it is released on XBLA.

I could not pass up the Classics Pack for $1.78. Shining Force 1 and 2 AND Streets of Rage 1 and 2? Awesomeness packed with nostalgia. And Alpha Protocol at $2? Even if the game sucked, its still worth $2 worth. Pretty good day considering I just purchased a boatload of hours worth of gameplay and fun for $3.78.

Wow, $2 for Alpha Protocol? That's nuts, giving that a try. I heard it was flawed, but had a few interesting ideas (such as your decisions actually having longterm gameplay and story effects).

How are the Genesis collection games handled? Are they basically just the ROM bundled with an emulator? Either way, the individual packs are pretty amazingly cheap for how many games they include.

Yeah, the reviews were very mixed... but for $2? SOLD!
Any recommendations for Shining Force and Shining in the Darkness?

I'm looking at a lot of these classics, thinking, "Would I have more fun with, oh, anything on my wishlist?"

But then, it's hard to argue with 10 games for $1.87...
Shining Force 1, 2 and Darkness are all great games. A little complex at first and maddening, but once you understand the gameplay it is so awesome. :)

Glad I spent some time on the Steam forums yesterday. I have retail copies of Company of Heroes and CoH: Opposing Fronts on my PC and the keys are both registered to my Relic account.

I picked up Tales of Valor on Steam last night, it registered the key for that to my Relic account and then I had all three games available to play on Steam. But you have to start CoH: Tales of Valor to be able to access the other games. In your Steam client, it will show that you don't own Company of Heroes, but you can play the campaigns and multiplayer for the other games via Tales of Valor.

When you download any of the games, it downloads all of them, but you need the key registered to Relic to be able to play them online.

Kind of confusing, but I'm just happy that I now have all of Company of Heroes available to be accessed via Steam, and only for a $4 cost.
I was actually hoping to get a Nancy Drew game sometime soon but I heard Trail of the Twister wasn't as good as some of the other ones out there.
I've heard the same. I guess that's why they put this one on sale. Too bad, I'm always in for a good adventure game.

Yeah, the Genesis games are handled through an emulator client. It's a clean interface, nothing fancy. It also supports controllers and multiple save states.

PROTIP: If you accidentally choose to end a session in one of the Shining Force games after doing an in-game save you'll be stuck because you can't "turn off" the Genesis. Back out to the main emulator menu, select "New Game" and you'll be brought back to the SF main menu with your in-game saves intact. Kind of clumsy but it works. Don't blame the emulator: the games originally did this for some bizarre reason (even some of the Dragon Quest games on the DS do this, too IIRC).

Needless to say, don't let this weird quirk stop you from enjoying these games, especially in Pack 4. The save states make playing games like Gain Ground and Kid Chameleon completable (sp?), and one only knows how convenient it is in the SF tactics games when you're in the middle of a battle and have to quit out for bathroom/feeding/real life reasons :)

I've only tried Medieval Total War once before and had to give up because I couldn't figure the game out. I felt like giving the Total War series another try, but out of the collection here, which game should I start out with first?

I recommend Total War Rome. You may not like this idea, but use console cheats to build the correct army (3 infantry, 2 archer, 1 cavalry, etc), and practice with that.

Welp, if anyone's thinking about AvP, I'll do a little write up:

So far, I'm actually somewhat impressed. The game's definitely not great, but it's got a few moments where it just hits it right. I've only played 2-3 missions in each race's campaign, and they're mostly what you'd expect. Being a marine is a fairly generic alien cooridor shoot-em-up. It feels decent though, and makes you feel like you're in the movie Aliens, with all the classic sound effects. The Alien campaign advertises itself is a more stealthy way of going about things, but generally devolves to climb around on shit and mash the attack button. I get headaches when changing orientations. And then there's the Predator missions. This is where the game shines, in my opinion. You've got a badass varied arsenal, awesome mobility, good stealth & combat, the other 2 pale in comparison.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with my buy. It's far from any GotY awards, but it's at least a little different from your average sci-fi FPS.

AvP could have been a fun MP game, but the retards at Rebellion decided to add dedicated server support too little, too late. IIRC we still didn't have it a month after launch and by that time the community was already dead. Every game you joined was lagged to hell with 200+ pings and that made playing an alien super easy. Once I got the hang of alien, it was god mode. If you saw me coming, you were already dead. Sadly, I'm probably one of the few people to ever achieve a maximum rank of 50 by the time I quit because barely anyone was playing anymore.

achievements really stretch out the games for me, i literally have no exploration motivation in games.

I just wish that steam achievements had a point value or something to compare your standing to your friends. Yes its nice that we have achievements but I like being able to compete with people I am close to. For us with small RL penises we need big virtual ones you know? ;)

Lol!

I also enjoy achievements. They give me something to aim for besides, you know, completing the game.

It'd be cool if they had like an opt-in program for achievements, that would compare stats to one another. And if you don't want to mess with all that, hey, opt-out.

This way, everyone is happy.

Yeah, I love 360 achievements and, to a lesser extent, trophies, but the steam achievements, being as they don't all feed into one central anything, I could give a crap less about. IMO, I just don't see the point of achievements if they only have meaning within each specific game.

I debated some of the Genesis games and AP, but I have the collection for my PS3 (Which also includes Phantasy Star II-IV.)

Just have to draw the line somewhere at double dipping on games that I already have.

I know no one cares because of the Sega Sale, but I believe Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes just came out on Steam. I'm currently playing my DS and about to finish the game, I think. I can't recommend this one enough.

Yup, got it at GetGames for $11.99 pre-ordered which came with the DLC. Unfortunately it no longer includes the DLC, and is therefore $11.19. Registers on Steam, and it is a reputable site. If you're going to get it, get it there. :D (Not speaking to you directly, utopianmachine, this is more of a friendly referral to a place where you can get the game for cheap)

Dude wrote code to generate something like a Steam gamerscore, assigning points to achievements based on how many in the community have cheeved them.

Cool feature, but again it needs to be built in to steam itself!

Yes, it's quite good.

The PC version looks like a straight XBLA port with good enough config options and mouse controls. From the DS, it has I think updated, and quite lovely, visuals. Also, the ability to revisit previous chapters to mop up that sidequest nonsense. I recommend it. Double dipping though? Hrm... eh...
Aaaahhh, Alpha Protocol for $2! So great, I'm glad I waited this long to get it!
Yeah Steam really surprised me with that price. Pretty out of the ordinary lol.
