Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I honestly believe Medieval 2 is the best I have played out of the series. Rome was great, too, but M2 has some truly incredible mods. Only downside is that you should get the kingdoms expansion as well, but it's well worth it
I just wish that steam achievements had a point value or something to compare your standing to your friends. Yes its nice that we have achievements but I like being able to compete with people I am close to. For us with small RL penises we need big virtual ones you know? ;)
The problem then is that Steam needs to play the role Microsoft does in that they need to police developers. You only get X points do distribute for this game, and games under a certain price tag only get this many points. Valve wants to be really hands off with Steamworks, they provide the API, you provide ways to integrate it in to your game.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a system like this too. I just don't think it fits Valve's motif of not trying to get in developers business.
Yes, it's quite good.

The PC version looks like a straight XBLA port with good enough config options and mouse controls. From the DS, it has I think updated, and quite lovely, visuals. Also, the ability to revisit previous chapters to mop up that sidequest nonsense. I recommend it. Double dipping though? Hrm... eh...
I also don't think I could double dip on this one. I just beat the game last night, and I have absolutely no plans to play it again. It rocked, but it was frustrating at times. I'm actually surprised I beat it, due to the number of times I literally growled at the game. Still, it dragged you back in because retrying didn't take too long, and it has an addictive nature that can't be denied.
Yup, got it at GetGames for $11.99 pre-ordered which came with the DLC. Unfortunately it no longer includes the DLC, and is therefore $11.19. Registers on Steam, and it is a reputable site. If you're going to get it, get it there. :D (Not speaking to you directly, utopianmachine, this is more of a friendly referral to a place where you can get the game for cheap)
I definitely want to get this on Steam, and this is a great price, but I'm wondering if it might not be $4 or something during one of the holiday sales, and I dunno if I'll really even play it until then. BUT I WANT TO HOARD IT. I think I'm a digital hoarder. :(
Yes, and it's on that disc
It has 1-4
Are you waiting for someone to ask you to enlighten us with your wisdom, or are you just being pedantic?

I think it's a shame they aren't included on Steam. I did sort of fail to play the first three over and over, but I had fun with the fourth one when it first game out (for like $100 or something on the Genesis--crazy! I was such a desperate child).

Clash of Heroes is in my more immediate DS backlog, by which I mean it's one of the titles I take with me. I don't think I'll go for it on Steam as well unless it drops to an absurd price point. Additions aside, I feel that I'm more likely to play it fully on the go.
Are you waiting for someone to ask you to enlighten us with your wisdom, or are you just being pedantic?
Method of numbering aside, correcting the claim to reveal that the PS3 collection includes the first game as well as the second, third, and fourth is far from pedantic. It's a palpable difference.

At the very min they could make it so there was a numerical value for the total number of achievments you have attained the way Apple does with the IOS devices.
So Alpha Protocol IS worth 2 bucks?
that's cheaper than a rental. If you are at all interested I would say go for it...

I was torn about which version I wanted, the XBLA one or the DS. Eventually, I decided to just get the DS game from Goozex. After all, it's sort of a "rental" versus paying MSP or Paypal to have it through Steam.

But the XBLA/Steam version looks really nice, and I heard they balanced the game more.

Puzzle Bots is the daily deal today, for $1.70.

It's an adventure game, and I really enjoyed it. It's short. Steam shows I beat it in three hours, but I would definitely recommend it for this price. It's fairly easy, but the humor is great. :D

I've had my eye on that might and Magic game, but if like to catch it on sale!

Thinking of picking up puzzle bots... I haven't bought anything in a couple of days so I need to fix that. Or I can break down and by that Hoard bundle instead.

Wow, I urge no one pick up Sonic Adventure DX on Steam. I was not aware it was a port of the XBLA version which is a port of the older superior PC version which even if you upscale it, the visuals only render at 600x480. Try to find a copy of the original DX port if you want it for PC.

For those who have bought one or more of the SEGA Classics Packs, can I ask, how do they show up in your library? What I mean is, do they all show up individually, or does it show up as a one big pack and to play a game you'd have to launch the pack that it's included with and choose the game from a menu? In other words, if I have Pack 01, and I want to play Vectorman, do I scroll down to the V section of my library to launch it?

If games launch individually, am I correct in assuming that games can be downloaded individually?

Picked up Alpha Protocol for $2 and it's so totally worth it.

Given all the fairly negative reviews I wasn't expecting much, but it's really quite good (and a steal at $2)!

Puzzle Bots looks good. I remember passing on it before in favor of something else, but I'll grab it today. It seems like a charming little game. I'm really loving all these cheap daily deals on lesser known games.

On a different note, that Dreamcast Collection I just bought is really disappointing. Sonic DX is awful next to the CD version. The configurations don't save unless you manually create and edit a config file, and it has all sorts of graphical glitches and performance issues the CD version didn't have. I have no idea why Sega would ever use an XBLA port (I didn't know it was one at the time of purchase either) when there's an older PC port that already works flawlessly. Definitely get that older CD version of it; it's MUCH better than the Steam version.

The other games in the collection are freaking out on me too, but I haven't spent as much time with them after the whole Sonic DX mess.

I don't typically complain about games, but that one's really, really not worth the purchase... and that's coming from someone who loves Sonic DX.

In order to launch any of these games, you would click on "Sega Genesis & Mega Drive Classics" from your Steam library. Individual games show up as DLC for the aforementioned title, and all games that you have purchased are downloaded together with the shell software.

FYI, the size of the total pack (including the Sonic games) is about 3.2 gigs.

EDIT: My bad, I haven't installed this in a long time. It is indeed, a Steam error, and I'm surprised they still haven't fixed this. Total size is just under 200 megs. Sorry for the confusion, thanks PenguinJim!

What games are worth getting from the Genesis collection, if I were to buy them individually? I had a Genesis but didn't really get into gaming until the PS1/N64 era, so I kind of missed the boat. Any suggestions guys? (Besides Sonic, of course.)

Streets of Rage is a great game

I preferred the second, personally.

Comix Zone, Gunstar Heroes, a Shining Force, Vectorman, Streets of Rage 2 I can recommend. Honestly though, if you're going to pick up more than say, 4 or 5 of the non-Sonic games, it makes sense to just grab the whole bundle for a few bucks more.

Ristar's my favorite off the list. Platformer with a Sonic style of charm, but a slower pace, and an interesting gameplay mechanic --- Ristar grabs onto enemies to defeat them, and can grab onto various other things in the levels.

Comix Zone, Vectorman, and Ecco the Dolphin were also fun and pretty unique games, and I also enjoyed the Golden Axe games.

I wish I could recommend more, but I had a SNES back in the day, and just started collecting games for my Genesis sometime after the Gamecube was out. The whole pack looks pretty good for the price, though.

Gunstar Heroes is a real gem. Other good platformers include Kid Chameleon, Shinobi III, and Wonder Boy III (that one has a bit of adventure tossed in). The Columns games are good puzzlers if you're into those.

There are a couple of games that just don't hold up well, namely the pseudo-3D games like Space Harrier and Thunder Blade, but there's enough greatness in this pack that buying the whole thing is the way to go.

Daily Deal is Neversoft/Activision's Gun (http://store.steampowered.com/app/2610/). I played through the PC version of this and it feels very much like a PS2 port. The open world really isn't, and it's very much by-the-numbers. The voice acting is okay and some of the sequences can be fun, but I think 5 bucks is still asking too much.

I personally can't compare it to other last-gen western-themed games like Red Dead Revolver, cuz I haven't played many, but maybe someone out there who has can.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm passing on the collection though... mostly because I found I already owned the Ultimate Genesis Collection for the 360 already. Can't really justify spending money to double dip on it, especially when I've heard they're not well optimized for the PC anyways.

For any CAGs in Russia, g2play.net has Russian Dead Island keys for $18.79 USD. Steamworks, so requires Steam, and also requires a Russian IP to activate.

Why does the layout of that site look so sketchy?
Why does the layout of that site look so sketchy?
Because it's probably run by two guys in a Russian apartment who know nothing about web design. There are quite a few sites in Eastern Europe where people buy up retail copies of games in countries where the prices are low and sell the keys to people in places where the price is much higher.

I don't buy from these sites, so I don't know which ones are legit and trustworthy, but before people even consider buying from them they should do the research. It's not uncommon for people to buy keys, apply them to their account, and then have Valve remove them for violating the terms of service. There are ways to use these key sites and get cheap games, but people shouldn't just jump into it without knowing what they're getting into.

They're using a fairly generic shopping cart software package. The site has been around for quite a while, used to specialize in Diablo II keys at bargain basement prices. My... "Russian friend" had no issues with the Dead Island deal.

Edit: People have had issues using these out of region keys with Valve games (There was a big deal made around the time The Orange Box came out, tons of keys were revoked and eventually returned to user accounts), and Call of Duty Black Ops I've heard was also pulled from accounts. I haven't heard of issues with any other games, though, and know a few people with other games that work just fine. If they haven't revoked the keys yet, it's very unlikely they will.

Well they let it slip in a news post a few days back, but Trine is finally the Deal of the Day.

Trine 75% Off $19.99 $5.00

Metacritic 80/100

But most people will tell you to "just get it". It's a great platformer/adventure.

I have this through OnLive and played about a couple of hours. I definitely enjoyed it but don't think I could play without a controller.

Good game though, not sure if I'm ready to double dip on this one yet.

Funny.. I could vouch for the direct opposite. Then again, I'm not much for console gaming so perhaps controllers aren't really my thing.

I don't think it's worth double-dipping at this price yet. Perhaps at the $2.50 price-point it will be.

I missed out on Trine for a 1.99 and was hoping to get it for that. Missed and tried the demo too late and fell in love with it. I don't mind dropping 5 bucks on it but still not sure tho.
So is the consensus on Gun that it's not worth it for $5 ?
I know the deal is over now, but I wanted to throw in my two cents about Gun. I started playing it one day, my husband watched, and soon we were taking turns playing it and finished within a day of each other.

Now, we played this before RDR. While I think Gun is a great game, if you've played RDR, you've already played Gun.

I really enjoyed Trine. I agree with the above poster about how you should play the game with a controller. If you have someone local, you can play co-op.

Trine is a great game, but it has been I think $2 on The Summer Sale (I remember getting it for around there). It's a fun platformer and if you have a controller, it works better. If not the mouse and keyboard will work ok.

I can say yeah I recommend Trine for $5, unless you want to hold off in case of another sale down the line.

Also I been playing a bit of Rusty Hearts and while it's a Korean MMO, it's actually a fun game. It feels kinda like a old school brawler type of game, and well it's free.

I can vouch for this. I would describe as a combination of Streets of Rage and God of War, with some MMO hub/overworld/inventory management mixed in. Not bad, but a little unpolished; the English voiceacting, for example. The acting itself is decent enough, but it seems like they didn't change the timings from the Korean version of the game so during cutscenes you get people standing around not saying anything after their line and others starting their lines before the first person finishes. It's kind of annoying, but fortunately with this kind of game nobody gives a rat's ass about the story.

Also, Busty Hearts. Seriously.
