Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

In fact, it's kinda silly what a joke pretty much every human enemy is in FNV compared to cazadors.
Agreed.
So Mirror's Edge works with a controller by default?
Yes but it really should be played with kb/m.

Sorry to go off-topic but is anybody signing up for Steam right now? I've tried for the last 2 hours to set up my account and keep getting the message: Your account creation request failed, please try again later. Maybe it's just jammed up with people trying to get their free copy of Portal. (guilty)

Any speculation on what Paradox's last deal will be? I'm hoping for Supreme ruler games or the Kings Crusade. (wouldn't mind sword of the stars either at $5 to double dip and get it on steam) Hopefully its not Hearts of Iron or Europa Universals, seems like those were on sale recently.

I am thinking it could be Magicka. Then again kinda hoping it is Magicka so I can get it for cheaper than $12.50 for the whole package.

Magicka

From the Magicka Weekly Community update post at the Paradox forums:

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum...y-Community-Update-the-16th-of-September-2011

As a side note I would recommend checking out Steam on Sunday.

No, I won't tell you why :p

I love ME but still have it on PS3. Are there any mods or anything unique about the PC version that would make it worth $5 for a PC version? Has it been cheaper in past Steam sales?

$4.99 is the cheapest it has been.

Also Phys X effects are an added bonus to PC (so long as you can run it) Other than that however I am unaware of differences.
So Mirror's Edge works with a controller by default?
I just bought it to test and it worked fine with my controller. Which is cool cause I game on a laptop and hate to try to use a mouse while sitting on a couch

It seems Mirror's Edge is known for causing difficulty with people who are prone to motion-sickness from games. As one of those people, I believe I'll have to skip the title. FPSs do that to me too. I had to take frequent breaks while playing Portal.

Picked up the Star Wars Collection. I've only played about half of the games, and the other half I have always wanted to play. DARK FORCES runs surprisingly well. Battlefront II is awesome, will have to try multiplayer.

I'm wondering if I should play the games chronologically, or just randomly.

edit -

By the way, does anyone know how to edit the titles of games in the Steam library? Some of the Star Wars titles are named Star Wars:, some are Star Wars-, looks weird.

Picked up Battlefield Bad Company 2 on a Steam Deal a while back and tried to play it last night. Awesome game but it keeps freezing to a black screen that I cant exit from. I have to hard reboot. I want to play through the game and have read about this a lot online. Anyone hear have luck finding a solution?

I been playing some Hard Reset and I have to say that I can only recommend it when it gets to the $10 level. The game has some serious problems to it that well need to be addressed.

Pros
-Unique Style to the game.
-The Upgrade System is a nice touch.
-There are two types of ammo, regular and plasma so it's easy to collect ammo
-A frantic fast paced shooter

Cons (these are the huge flaws of the game)
-There are seriously like only 6 types of robots and you will be thrown against the same enemies, time after time after time.
-It gets to the point of serious sam with massing amount of enemies coming at you, but they are the same 6 type of robots over and over.
-There is no way to dodge.

Let me go a bit into this no dodging system. See when you sprint you use up a small sprint meter that takes 4-5 seconds to recharge. That's fine but there is like no way to dodge incoming enemies if you don't have a sprint charge ready. This becomes a huge problem because there is a certain type of enemy that actually charges like you like a bull. If you have two of those charging enemies in a firefight, yeah your pretty much fucked because there really isn't a way to avoid it and they have a fuckton of health.

The game is harder than it needs to be just because of the way it controls. I mean if they fixed the dodging system I would like it a little more, but as it stands, $10 or under.

Use your environment and it isn't a problem. I've played through a fair bit of Hard Reset at my friends and didn't have any problems.

Magicka Collection and the rest of it's stuff is on sale today. Good deal too if you don't have it already.
Daily Deal is The Whispering Worlds which I've been interested in for sometime, anyone played it? It has rarely gone on sale and I don't think it has been this cheap before.
I already have Magicka, buying Magicka complete will give me the DLC, but won't give me an extra copy of the game, is that correct?
Correct unless it explicitly states otherwise on checkout. Only a fifty cent difference by just buying the DLC ($4.75), anyway.

Vietnam is the only other one with 'campaign' like content. The rest are just PvP/arena maps and/or aesthetics that add slight character variation. Unless you play a lot of multiplayer I wouldn't recommend anything but Vietnam.
Any point-and-click aficionados feel strongly one way or the other about the Whispered World (daily deal)?
I've been waiting a long time for this to hit a low price point to pick up. For a while, it seemed like it would never come down. At $5, I think it's time to jump in. Just Adventure gave it an A-.

Cool, thanks.
Yeah i no, I posted it in the Group buy thread too. Just figured I post it here since it doesnt look like too many people looking for a 4pack.

Im hosting one BTW. 1 slot left.
Yes but it really should be played with kb/m.
I completely disagree. I play all FPS games with a mouse and keyboard, however that felt completely awkward for the gameplay of Mirror's Edge. You need to hit a lot of different buttons very quickly, which was a pain with a keyboard. Besides, you don't really need the precision of a mouse in ME, there is almost no shooting in the game.

TWW looks great, has an intriguing story, and while I personally have no problem with the voice acting, the protagonist's voice do take some getting used to. However, I have to say the game's puzzles are very much hit or miss - not good when the gameplay depends on them. Worth it for $5 though I think.
Retail boxed version for The Whispered World is $6.75 on Amazon and free shipping if you have Prime

Thanks for the info. I might almost prefer the boxed version, but looking at the shipping weight (2.4 oz) it doesn't sound like there's much in there at all. When I ship out a boxed game on Goozex, average weight for a disc, case, manual, and box is closer to 7 oz.
I read Vietnam is really difficult for solo players. That true? My roommate won't buy this game even though it's so cheap and he had a good time with the demo.
It's difficult but I wouldn't say impossible.

Also, you can play local multiplayer on the same computer with two controllers or one person on a controller and another on keyboard and mouse. You only need one copy for that setup so it may be another option for you and your roommate.

The game, in general, is hard to solo. Mostly because it's "permanent sudden death" mode. When you die in single-player, you're forced to start over at a checkpoint.

But in multiplayer, if you die and your teammates are still alive, they can revive you with a quick spell. And because there's no limit to the amount of revives one can receive or dish out, it makes the game much easier.. but that's slightly balanced off by friendly-fire.
Using a controller sounds so...crazy? How would they fit all the elements on the controller?
I can only assume a default control has the following: a D-pad, 4 buttons (right side), 2 controller ("thumb") knobs, 2 shoulder buttons on each the left and right side of the controller, the "select" and "start" buttons, and maybe also 2 extra buttons if the 2 controller knobs can be pressed (I believe PlayStation refers to that on their controller as the L3/R3 buttons).

If I remember correctly, there are 8 elements in Magicka. 4 shoulder buttons and either the D-pad or the 4 buttons on the right side should compensate that nicely. 2 knobs can be used for movement and directional control. And either the D-pad or the 4 buttons on the right side (whichever aren't used by the elements) will control the casting (self-casts, area casts, regular casts, etc.).

Personally, I think it would feel awkward, but, hey.. if it works. Plus, you're not really missing much if you are playing on the same computer, anyway. Since even online play restricts all players to the same screen. :x

It does sound odd, but I think I would like joystick movement over the current point and click method. I would have at least liked the option to swap controls, my third mouse button doesn't work very well, but I have a fourth button on the mouse that can't be assigned.
does anyone know if this is the last day of the paradox sale?
Ends tomorrow at 10 am Pacific time, no new deals tomorrow, today was the last one, but the pack and today's deal will be available for purchase until tomorrow at the time of the sale's end.
Thanks for the reply. Using a controller sounds so...crazy? How would they fit all the elements on the controller? I'll pick up Vietnam though. Thanks!
At E3, the Paradox rep who was playing Magicka with others was using a controller, as it was the only control scheme available on the show floor. It worked extreeeeemely well - better than mouse and keyboard, in my opinion.
I want The Whispered World, but I've got at least 10 unplayed adventure games glaring at me.
Take it from me, a person with a serious problem buying games, go for it! ;) Your 10 is nothing compared to my 30, and that's just adventure.

What I find wonky about Magicka is that while the keyboard was better for picking spell elements, a controller was better than the 'click to move' for positioning your character.

Direct2Drive, but it activates on Steam. CheapyD made a thread about and use a code to get it for 2.50
