Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
I have it for the 360. I picked it up to play with the gf at the time as well as my siblings when they came to visit. For a few bucks it is totally worth it. It is basically Mario Kart with Sega characters. it may not be quite as fun as Mario Kart but it tries and succeeds enough I would say, especially for $5!
Bought it a while back to play with the kids and I ended up enjoying it a lot. Your description is spot-on. There's plenty to do in the game too - it's not just a cheap cash-in game at all.
That Sonic racing game looks like it could be 5 dollars worth of fun. Any opinions?

Is the sonic racing game even worth playing single player?
Sonic racing is one of the best kart games i played but it was on 360 with a controller. The graphics are awesome and there are lots of characters. The thing that sucked is that Shenmue and Metal Sonic DLC is not available on steam

I bought the original Flatout again today and remembered just how much fun that game was way back when. I was wondering if there would be any interest in setting up a group here of CAG members for some figure 8 online racing. Maybe even make a league or something if there is enough interest/people. Inbox me if this may be something of interest to you because when I tried to find a game online earlier today there was nothing. When I tried to host a game i sat there for ~30 mins and had 0 joins.
Sonic and Sega All Stars racing is like a smoother, quicker, but less engrossing Mario Kart. I recommend it. It's slick as hell.

Sonic Generations is tremendous fun but, yeah, that final boss is terrible and Chemical Plant is laggier than it needs to be.

Sonic 4 is garbage.
I haven't played a Sonic game since the original. Pleasantly surprised with Generations. It looks amazing and it's a blast. Semi-trucks chasing you, skateboards, snowboards, go-karts. Tho I did expect the boss battles to be kinda cheesey. Gotta track down more SEGA coupons b4 the weekend is up! :)

I'm tempted by Sonic Racing, but I don't know how much I would actually play it with all of my other games. I guess I'll pass for now.

By the way, I tried out the Sonic Generations Casino Nights DLC and it's not quite worth $1.60, cheap as it might be. It's just one pinball stage (mini-game, not actual platforming stage) and there's no notable difference between the classic and modern version. Unless you really want some Sonic Pinball, I'd pass on it, you're not missing anything.

Your condescension is noted, Dirk. Although, I have to wonder where I ever said I pay full prices for games. I can state an opinion while following through on it.
I still think the prices they are charging for lazy half assed console ports shoveled onto the PC are too much, that we shouldn't have to pay the same price for a digital copy as a physical copy, that Origin shouldn't be charging the same price as everyone else because there's no middle man (and also because it sucks and if they want my attention they need cheap prices). And you know what? If that gives you an aneurysm DirkBelig so be it.
Unfortunately, the digital vs. physical has more to do with retailers than anything. When you look at a typical console game, they have to pay to press the DVDs, create the boxes, print manuals (though that's becoming less common), pay for shelf space, delivery, warehouse storage, etc. With a digital copy, nearly all of that is cut out. I'm sure a lot of publishers would be happy to cut the price of games down a little to encourage shopping digitally, but brick and mortar retailers tend to frown on that and game developers are still somewhat beholden to them due to shelf space acting like free advertising (great for impulse buys, for example).

(From what I heard, this is part of what created preorder bonuses. It quelled the retailers' fears that people would just preorder digitally since it was so much easier, so the preorder bonus would give some incentive to get it from a b&m retailer. Of course, nowadays even digital services offer preorder bonuses, so guess that plan didn't really pan out in the long run.)

But fortunately, digital games due seem to drop in price faster than physical ones. I'm still amazed at the games Best Buy still charges $50 for when I can get them online for less than half that. Of course, at the same time, PC gaming is increasingly becoming digital (thanks to Steam) anyways. I couldn't even find the PC games when I was at the newly redesigned Best Buy at my house today. Hell, if anything, the price of PC games should be going down due to this for the reasons listed above, not that I expect that.

Sonic Racing is absolutely amazing. I've put in 100+ hours in that game and that's quite a bit for a kart racer, at least for me. The power-ups, tracks, karts, and characters are all very well done and there's enough variety in the modes to keep you entertained for hours. My girlfriend and I used to play it all the time. Lots of fun to be had there.

This is good to know. It's a real shame that Shenmue and the Metal Sonic DLC isn't available via Steam. Does anyone know why that is? Also, were either worth downloading on the consoles in the first place? If they didn't offer any major benefits then I might dive into the Steam version at this price.

I'm surprised by the response to Sonic and SEGA All-Star Racing - I played the demo and didn't really enjoy it. Perhaps I need to give it another try.

Also, I didn't realize Sonic 4: Episode 1 was getting a PC port. I liked the PS3 version when I didn't take it seriously. (After all, as much as it tries to be like the Genesis games, it doesn't quite get there.) Still, the game wouldn't make a bad purchase when it's in the $5 or less range.

For those that don't have an Xbox 360 controller and wireless USB receiver for your PC games, it's on sale for $36.99 at Newegg with coupon code EMCNJHN34. Link.

Thanks! You know, I should probably finally get one. Of course usually I just use USB, but eh, why not.

Do these work now? I remember people saying they were flaky, which is weird, since it should be no big deal to just put the same thing in as the Xbox.

The one good thing about Games for Windows is that lots more games have controller support, although I played one FPS that ONLY controlled right with a controller! But oh well, it was still better looking than the consoles.

Ended up buying Sonic Racing. I have plenty of stuff in my backlog and will not play it for some time, but couldn't pass it up. I have been watching it for quite some time but it was never lower than 9.99.

The wireless receiver works fine, maybe the people that were complainining about flakiness got one of the knockoff receivers which seems to be quite common these days? I've had mine for over 2 years and have had zero problems. I don't think you'll find a better price for a controller + official receiver combo

Speaking of gamepads, I have a two and a half year old Logitech Dual Action that has suited me fine for all games, though sometimes I have to use the Xbox emulator. Now I have been playing Deus Ex Human Revolution and it has started to disconnect and connect during the game, sometimes in quick sucession, and one of the axis goes crazy and I have to go back to calibrating it again. So it seems like a good idea to change my gamepad.

I have been thinking if I should get a newer Logitech gamepad (Rumble F510) or an Xbox controller. I prefer to use the directional pad for movement so that favors Logitech, and I heard the Xbox controller is great for new games but sucks for old ones, which I play. And I have no need for a wireless gamepad. Any suggestions?

I got a few of these from Microsoft so they're definitely genuine. The one I'd been using actually just died a couple of weeks ago. I unplugged it from my desktop which was off at the time. I plugged it into my laptop and it was dead. I didn't drop it or do anything to damage it. It just stopped working. Still, I got 2-3 years out of it and electronics don't last forever.

Of course in all of the time that I had it the signal never dropped and every Vista/Win7 computer that I plugged it into immediately picked it up. I also recommend getting one.

Thanks! That's great to hear!

Ugh, I bought Medal of Honor from Amazon recently and I activated it on Origin, oh well.

If you like the modern military FPS campaigns, I'd highly recommend it. I found it to be better than both MW3 and BF3 campaigns, however in a different way. It wasn't like an all in your face, Michael Bay, one helicopter crashes into another which comes smashing into your building and then it falls to the ground kind of action. It was more realistic action. I thought it was excellent, especially for $5. The three major downfalls:
-Multiplayer is boring after a day
-The campaign is insanely short, took me just under 3.5 hours
-Extremely easy game, even on the hardest difficulty

I'm not sure how the xbox controller sucks for old games? I would say the logitech controllers and 360 controllers both have their pros and cons. You might wanna get the logitech if you play a lot of games that require a ton of d-pad use, however the build quality for my last logitech controller I used was pretty cheap (I had a wireless rumblepad 2). One of the buttons ended up breaking after 3 years. I loved it while it worked though, and that's a pretty decent amount of time for it to last.

360 controllers are supported natively for many newer games these days, so the main disadvantage for the logitech is you may have to configure the buttons, where as the 360 controllers often have great button setups for new games without needing to configure them or map buttons to the keyboard. However, the 360 controller has a terrible d-pad, but I haven't gotten around to trying out the "new" version of it with the improved d-pad.

Thanks for the reply. I heard that the Xbox controller is not easy to configure, or not able to be configured at all, when you try to play older games. Since I still have some older games on my backlog, like Splinter Cell games, that would be an issue for me. And my Logitech Dual Action is still intact even after almost three years of intense gameplay.

Personally, whenever I have problems configuring controls for games I just use something like xpadder. I've played many games that didn't detect buttons for my logitech controller, so I had to use xpadder or a similar program to map keys to the controller. I think most controllers are going to be like that for older games, never really heard of the 360 controller having any specific problems but I could be wrong.

I love Logitech for their mice and PC controllers so I don't think you could go wrong either way. I actually think my wireless rumblepad 2 battery life lasted a hell of a lot longer than my 360 controller's batteries lol.. so that's another pro for the logitech (great battery life if you go wireless), but I think the logitech wireless rumblepad 2 had weaker rumble support so that couldve had something to do with the greater battery life.

Here is the fix to that. Hope you didn't throw it away yet.

Thanks for the link. Nope, didn't throw it away yet. I never do that unless I've exhausted all repair attempts. I hate trashing stuff. Looks like it's time to get out my soldering iron.

edit: It worked great. Thanks again.

The wireless receiver (real or knock-off) is finicky for sure but I've owned both and I've found that it's typically a driver issue with the thing. Once you have it installed properly and synced with the controller it's total heaven (except for that smegging d-pad, but that's a rant for another day/thread :D). I still highly recommend it since it's a $5-$15 solution for using a wireless Xbox 360 controller many of us already likely have. CAGgin' it up, naturally! :D

I've found the information in this Amazon.com product review to be invaluable in helping to set up this adapter. There is one quirk that might be unique to me though and it's that I can only get the adapter to work in the USB port I first had it installed in, and I definitely can't get it to work with my powered Targus USB hub. Again, maybe it's a quirk with my laptop or something, so YMMV.

Hope that helps!

I bought Sonic and Sega all star racing. I was watching a you tube video of a level with cheesy Sonic music. That was a pretty much insta buy for me .

Unless you're dying for another military FPS, skip MoH. A poor CoD attempt that just falls short. The campaign's not terrible, just lackluster. Lacks a lot of polish.

I've used it in multiple USB ports in my computer, so it's probably some weird issue with your laptop. I also use multiple wireless devices and it's never been interfered with any of them or had any connection loss.

I second this. I'll also add that the multiplayer has no replayability at all (2 weapon unlocks, if I remember correctly, and then you just unlock the opposite side's gun). I unlocked everything in a few hours. Maps are literally just long corridors (choke, choke, choke). One of the maps is smaller than fy_iceworld.

Yeah, could be. I'm using Win7 64-bit, but I'm also running an MSI gx640 which has a few quirks of its own. I consider it a Millennium Falcon as it doesn't look like much but has it where it counts. :D

Ugh, yes, what is going on with that ridiculous d-pad. It should have been caught in 2005 before launch. We're now probably almost 7 years after they should have gone "WHAT THE HELL" the first time they used it....

Ugh, the Xbox and Playstation pads both annoy me for how crazy close they are to perfection, with idiotic decisions here and there to keep them down...

An option is get a Dualshock 3 and hook up via USB. Use the free app called MotionInJoy and it will be recognized as a 360 pad in every game. Good Dpad, good compatibility. It's what I use. Just letting you know it's an option. It's possible to get it working wirelessly if your PC supports bluetooth, mine doesn't so I never tried. Oh yeah and if the game doesn't work too well with 360 which I've noticed with Assassin's Creed 1 and 2 you can tell MotionInJoy to behave as a PS2 controller and then it works better.

That's true, I forgot you could do that (never tried it myself). Is there any way to make the dual shock 3 controller wireless on pc, or do you have to hook it up via USB?

I think it was Bastion that clued me in on games nowadays only supporting 360 controllers. After a few other programs and hacks, I settled on MotionInJoy and haven't looked back.

My only complaints are I had to uninstall Threatfire, a behavior-based spyware/virus protection program, as it kept BSOD-ing when using MotionInJoy, and the GUI is dreadful. Also couldn't get it working with my mobo's Bluetooth, but I don't mind using a USB cable.

Medal of Honor's campaign is great. It just feels a lot tighter than the CoD games as of late. Not to knock the CoDs more than necessary but MoH just worked better.

Problem is, it is very short and the difficulty is quite easy, even on Hard. I imagine this was meant to pander to the ill-thought-out Tier One mode where there are no checkpoints and your runs are scored. Killing the player as viciously as the CoDs could would be detrimental to a checkpoint-free run. The problem is Tier One doesn't lend itself to repeated score runs. Scripted bits still run in real time and trying to put a ticker over some of the more dramatic bits like that mountain assault just doesn't work.

There's a reason why Arcade Mode didn't get ported beyond CoD4.

I've never bothered with the MP but I just had good fun with the SP and felt it worth what I paid for it on console.

Does anyone know if you register a Steam Game (Dead Space 2 for example) on Origin, does that mean you could play on both? I want to register DS2 on Origin to get the armor set for Dragon Age II (which is on Origin)
You're pimping Asscreed and then talking about questionable storytelling and mediocre combat of another game?
Sure, go ahead and enlighten me with all your superior at-combat indie games
Why do people get so zealous with popular games? It's like some kind of twisted envy possessed them and all they think is "indie indie indie".

As long as you have a CD key from Steam, you can try registering it on Origin. I have Shift 2 Unleashed on both Steam and Origin (registered my Steam copy on Origin), no troubles. So it should work.

Thank you sir, it registered just fine. Seems weird I could have it in both places independently. Figured EA wouldn't allow this sort of "multiple copies". I prefer Steam over Origin like most people and didn't want to lose DS2 to Origin.

I'd imagine if you bought portal 2 from origin and they gave you a key it would activate on steam.

Actually, you might want to play Dead Space 2 on Origin instead of Steam, because EA stopped patching the Steam version.

Is Origin even good? I hadn't touched it at all but I might have to for some of these games...

Do I have to talk to human CS reps to activate my DS2 CD keys in Origin or can I just copy paste my Steam keys?

I agree with everything here 100%. I beat it in my first night on the hardest difficulty, with no problem at all. But it was an amazing campaign, a more realistic twist to the modern FPS scene. This is what I had hoped Battlefield 3's campaign was going to be like.

Think of the Call of Duty campaigns as a Michael Bay directed game, and think of Medal of Honor as a Steven Spielberg directed game. Both are fun in their own ways.
