CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I like Burnout Paradise, though it didn't provide me with as much of a challenge as I like. I jumped in at Burnout 3 (Takedown) and enjoyed it the most. The flaws in it's AI (cars seemed to travel at normal top speed when too far ahead or behind you) combined with a total lack of rubberbanding meant that you could never ditch the competition, and if one car got way out ahead you lost first place. The (1st place) winning strategy was to bully to the top of the pack and then stay in the alpha position, cutting down anyone who dared to outshine you. I really enjoyed it. Burnout 4 & 5 (Revenge & Dominator) I have a harder time separating, a lot of fun but not as challenging (but still a decent challenge). Burnout 1 & 2 entered my backlog a couple years back. I liked Burnout Paradise's theme & city. It was fun, but really left me wanting more of a challenge. I understand Burnout 1 & 2 where a bit more driving/chaining-burnouts focused than later entries.
FYI for those looking to pick up classics like Planescape: Torment and the Baldur's Gate series, check out the Dungeons & Dragons collections on Gamersgate. They've been under $7 for big collections of classics (even less if you have the IGN discount).

D&D Anthology: The Master Collection (no idea why it's forcing my link to the UK site)
+1 It was my first gamersgate purchase. I don't think I've seen that price since February.

I can't seem to find this collection on the American site, and it seems on the UK site that it's not actually released yet? Was $7 a price you saw on this, or is it your estimate based on how they've priced similar packages?

PS:T has been on my GoG wishlist for a while now. If this package goes live, I'd be very tempted to go this route instead.

...though as others have said, I'd prefer them on Steam.

I bought it off Gamersgate earlier this year (Feb 27) for $5.76 (on sale + IGN discount). I bought the Neverwinter Nights complete pack for $8.65 (same deal) on Feb 19.

Edit: Interestingly, it's also no longer available from Amazon. Methinks something is going on...

Double Edit: It looks like Hasbro has the licensing now, and Gamestop/Impulse is the only place to digitally buy the D&D anthologies right now, and they require the Impulse client, apparently. Yuck. There were rumors of them coming to Steam back when a registry entry showed up in February, but nothing has come of it. I would gladly rebuy them if that happened.

I think that the rights for the D&D games are tied up in legal mumbo jumbo right now. Atari had the rights and it's since shifted to Hasbro sometime this year. As far as I know, I think that GOG is the only one who currently seems to be selling them digitally.

Thanks for the head's up. I guess I'll just wait for the Enhanced Edition. Sure...it's won't have the contents of the D&D Anthology....but it will have new content. I'm down with that.

Yea... I hate to say this but I have all those games on disc... Baldur's gate forward. The old discs that I have astounds me sometimes... I'm like huh, I can't believe I bought that. What they need to do is rerelease Star Wars Rebellion...

The new Indieroyale bundle is live!

Sol: Exodus, All Zombies Must Die!, and Cubemen for Steam. Squids, Platformance: Castle Pain, and Platformance: Temple of Death for Desura.
The new Indieroyale bundle is live!
thanks for the heads up ! don't know any of these games, maybe except I've heard of SOL, but paid $8 like always to get some music :)
Already have Cubemen and only mild interest in AZMD. Looks like I'm passing. Pretty disappointing that they only had 3 Steam keys this time.
Yeah, this seems to be typical for them. Seems like the last few bundles have had 2-3 Steam games and the rest Desura.

Mildly interested in SOL. Interested in AZMD.. but I may pass on this one as well.

Edit: Does anyone know if the platformace games have gamepad controls? A quick google search turned up nothing.
Edit#2 - Apparently, according to 8 Bit Horse, it uses a joystick and a single action button (if anyone else was wondering).

Interesting, only thing keeping me from it is that I already bought 2 other bundles and havent touched them :(

Unfortunately to add a non-steam game to steam, you have to first install the game, correct?

This might shock people, but many times I purchase a game, I don't immediately install it. (I'm sure I'm the only one with a huge backlog..) ;)

Anyway around this MysterD? Or do I simply need to stop being slack and install my games once I purchase them? :)

TY sir.
Wait for a sale on GOG or somewhere!

I'm actually surprised those ain't on Steam. Activision (publisher for Arcanum) and Hasbro (publisher for PST) should bring them here.

Most games that I have that don't require or utilize Steamworks, I do add them normally as Non-Steam games. Sure, you don't get all Steam benefits for adding a Non-Steam game, but I'm always online on Steam, anyways.
No, the game (or program, or whatever) has to be installed. All Steam does is create a shortcut to the program's .exe file and tries to hook the overlay into it.

this. did some cleaning recently and found my strategy guide for rebellion, but no idea what happened to the disc. i remember playing the hell out of it though and would love to revisit it, even though it would probably just be for nostalgia's sake.

Today's deal is Adam's Venture Complete Pack at 66% off ($4.41)

The three individual episodes are $1.69 each.

Adam's Venture is a new action & exploration game. Brought to life from a third person perspective with the Unreal 3™ engine, adventure gamers are in for a real visual treat.

Set during the 1920’s, Adam’s Venture delivers a unique combination of action oriented gameplay with classic puzzle solving, that takes you on an epic journey to the middle East to discover the legendary Lost Garden of Eden – but an ancient evil tries to prevent you from succeeding...
Genre: Action, Adventure, Indie

At first glance, the Adam's Venture games look like "Uncharted-lite." (It doesn't help that the main character looks like he should be voiced by Nolan North himself.) Despite that, it looks like the environments are pretty detailed and expansive for an indie team. Somehow, I find myself interested.

I'd like to know if any CAG's have sampled the games.

I loved Rebellion. I didn't really understand the tactical battles, but the galactic strategy was great. Must've lost months of my life to that game.

Adam. Garden of Eden. Soloman. Revelations. Templars. Repeated reminders that the game is "family-frendly" and "non-violent" (aren't most adventure games?)

This is a "Christian" video game series, isn't it?

I think I'll pass until someone mods the devil into it.
First off, damn I missed all the Doctor Who talk. Secondly, yeah, at least when it comes to my experience the majority of my generation (Y) have very little patience with any pre-80s media. My sister for example cannot stand watching anything before the seventies and thinks most of the movies are lame and/or boring. Some of my friends are like this too. Thankfully, I'm not though, I love older movies/tv shows.

I'm a pretty new Doctor Who fan and did indeed start with new series, but have since started to watch the older episodes. Going in chronological order, so far I'm up to mid-Troughton, and boy do new Doctor Who fans not know what there missing! Granted I love cheesy, bad movies, so that helps a bunch, but it's a great series and there is just something so lovable about the doctor and what he stands for that makes me want to meet him more than any other made-up character. No matter how campy or bad the plot is I always enjoy the ride that is watching the show. And the 2nd Doctor is so my favorite thus far (as well as the companion Jamie). :D
See, now this is perfectly acceptable and preferable. Its not a big deal if you don't start a series on the original, but dammit, give it a try! Dr. Who isn't even the worst for these offenders though...I shudder everytime anyone talks any Star Trek post-NG and then turn around and say thats the only iteration of the series they've seen!!! That aside, gald to hear you're watching the old episodes. It definitely takes a few ups and downs in terms of quality, but overall its a good several years time spent .
I haven't watched all the old seasons yet, but I can honesty say that there is very little mention of past-goings-ons or jokes for that matter. The new series is very accessible to new viewers. I mean there is one episode where an old companion shows up, but its nothing more than a guest appearance. There are no really obscure references other than know she is. Please, do yourself a favor and give the show a chance.
Ya, new series doesn't require ANY knowledge of past episodes. Its targeted to "reboot" the franchise [NOT THE SERIES] while maintaining continuity. Thats all. The amount of old references is not different that with what I mentioned above, Star Trek (Original Series vs Next Generation). You can watch NG independently and its still just as good; same concept with Dr. Who.
Did anyone else find Burnout Paradise to be extremely disappointing? I loved Burnout 1 and 2, some of my favorite racing games way back when. Yep, but dude, Burnout 3 was and is the best! Don't group it with Revenge! I liked Paradise, and I get that the setup is quite different; but its just not as fun as the others.
Burnout Paradise is my first Burnout game, and, right now, I've only played about 3 hours or so. So far, it has at least been a nice diversion. I'm not sure it'll hold my interest, but it's an entertaining racer. (By the way, does "Paradise City" have to be the first song played EVERY time I launch the game, Criterion?)

Blur will always be my favorite arcade-styled racer of this generation, and it's a real shame the game didn't sell better. With low sales for both Blur and James Bond 007: Blood Stone, Bizarre Creations had to shut its doors.

I am sad.
1. Get Burnout 3
2. GOD fuckING DAMMIT DO I HATE GUNS N ROSES BECAUSE OF THAT NOW!!!
3. Blur is awesome and very underrated. I forced some friends to get it back when it was price glitched, super-couponed, or something at Best Buy.

Simple solution to all these questions about using a gamepad. Try it out, if it doesn't work, use xpadder!

This, for sure. I grew up on Tom Baker (curly hair, long scarf), but I love that i can share the new shows with my kids. I quickly recognized that in any 4 consecutive stories, you will quickly learn

a) Last of a dead race called the Timelords from Gallifrey;
b) Tardis, how it works, how it's broken;
c) dies and regenerates;
d) there's always a companion, sometimes two, and eventually they get left behind;
e) Daleks=bad;
f) Cybermen=bad.

And that's like 90% of the show right there. getting guest visits from Sarah and K9 is just icing for us old folks. but I feel no compulsion AT ALL to explain any further history or back story. the new shows look better and are much better written and acted; why saddle new viewers with extra luggage? And in the meantime, I've been able to spark my teenager's interest in other nerd-friendly British culture, like Monty Python and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Having said that, I love hearing when people like LeftLovesGames want to dive in and see more. Even I find the old ones hard to watch, now.

I'm pretty interested in Adam's Venture but I think I'll pass for now since it's an episodic game and all of the episodes aren't out yet.

Well I got trolled again by Steam. I bought Adam's Venture on the summer saw at 40% off thinking hey it's the summer sale this is the cheapest it will get.

Also passing on Indie Gala unless it gets much closer to $4. I hate that if you don't grab it exactly when it launches or watch the price fluctuations religiously then you're paying closer to $5 if not above.

One thing I noticed since posting last is that the games have gamepad support on onlive, but apparently not in the steam version - which I find odd.
Ugh GFWL. Corrupted my Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet save at 97% complete. All I had left to do was beat the final boss.
Always use an offline profile for GFWL. It's the most problem-free experience of this malware.
No chance of corrupted saves because as far as I can tell they are not encrypted like the online ones and are stored locally only. Also the client doesn't need updating and doesn't get stuck in update loops.
Yes, you don't get achievements or DLC, but do you really value your gamerscore more than a more problem-free experience? I wouldn't want to take my chances with potentially progress destroying issues to get achievements. Then again I'm not in the xbox ecosystem at all and live in an "unsupported" xbox/GFWL country.

I was interested until reading the wiki: "The player directs the young explorer Adam Venture on a quest for the long lost Garden of Eden. During these endeavors he will encounter fragments from the Bible and, through a variety of puzzles, learn about common Christian values."

I do appreciate that they didn't create the awful sentence of "...Adam Venture on an Adventure..."

So would you recommend starting off with the new series? Or the old new one as I heard a lot of fans complaining about this new show IIRC

I tried to like Burnout Paradise but there is just something about it, maybe it is the open world driving makes it harder to just jump in and play and jump out as I have to go find the races. Plus doesn't really seem like there is any upgrades either for cars. Though I have only played for a few hours now.
Yeah, I usually do definitely prefer the "Save anytime" system.

Games would probably feel even shorter, if we didn't have to die, reload a checkpoint which is who knows how far back, repeat cycle until successful.
My problem is I often feel that checkpoint saves don't come soon enough, in many games...
My biggest gripe with them as well. In fact the only game that did Checkpoints well I think are games like Darksiders/ God of War as it checkpoints right before each fight it seemed like so even if you die you just start right back outside the fight.

I think DA2's classes were more interesting - as Rogues weren't basically "Weak Warrior" characters.
Of course, overall -- DA2 is nowhere even close to as remotely as amazing as the original DAO.
I havn't really played either DA2 or DA:O to completion but got that one bundle from Amazon so now one day i'll give them another go. It just goes back to I think perfer the system of DnD or The Dark Eye or other traditional RPG's where your skills and spells are just tied to a skill tree. That way I get the chance to find wands/ spells ahead of time rather just specing one way or the other.

I'm sure it'll be on sale on GOG - as it's been before. If you ain't bought it yet and don't plan to get around soon to it - maybe you'll want to wait for a sale on there? It's bound to hit a sale there.

Here's a nice Modder's Guide for Planescape: Torment that is on Destructoid.
You'll probably at least want to do a widescreen mod w/ it...especially if you are playing on a big monitor w/ HD resolutions.

I've never installed DX SDK on any Windows systems, so you will probably want to avoid that step. That could be more problems than it's worth.

You could always tag in the command line for your shortcut or game's EXE after the location of the thing "-NO3D" (without quotes) to force it to not use any 3D effects at all, as that's always been the problem w/ most Infinity Engine games on modern PC's (since Win XP days)...and some other old games like Arcanum, as well.
Basically "-NO3D" tag turns off DirectX HardWare Acceleration (for graphics) for the game you tag it w/ on that shortcut or EXE.

I haven't tried PS:T on Win 7 - I still got in on 4-CD set somewhere (it was a X-Mas Present from my dad, one of those years...not too long after it came out). I should finish my 2nd play-through of it. I don't play many games more than once, I should note.

EDIT:
Here's another guide on GOG on Modding PST.
I remember seeing that article as well awhile back; But seems your as fanatical for Planescape as I am for Fallout 2 which is always a good sign when it comes to older RPG's my next backlog RPG will be to mod up Planescape and give it another go on easy and just focus on the storyline :D
@Sophita While not exactly the same: GoG: Best Played with Mouse in One Hand, Beer in the Other
That's a good list and about the same, It is always funny how most of the one handed games are older games, not just because it is on GoG, It seems turn based systems have become harder and harder to find.
anyone know if Darksider 2 is gonna require lots of graphics power or is it gonna be similar to the first one and easily playable?
Not sure on graphical power, but good sign is the developers are demo'ing the game on PC to websites when they show it off and the overall engine is the exact same from Darksiders..So should be similar if not better because it should now be better optimized on PC too now.

I was interested as well, but ended up passing. Some of the reviews indicate the Christian message is toned down and the game is enjoyable with out feeling too preachy.

Any preachy seems too preachy to me, but I'm one of THOSE people. :hot:
