CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)

It's incredible how quickly people want to pay so much for indie games that usually get old after 15 minutes. At $3, I might have jumped on it, but in under 12 hours it's already almost $6? Don't quite understand that.

Oh well, money saved, right?
Ughh moving right now so things are really hectic, things getting boxed, staging of the house. I want my games. ):
Haha, I know your pain all too well. My house just sold a few weeks ago, and we have to be out by Thursday. I hated having to keep the house so dang clean for showings... Felt like I was a guest in my own home, ha. Good luck with your move!

I was interested in these Adam Venture games because like someone already said earlier, I got an Uncharted vibe from the game page. But I figured, if I want Uncharted, l'll just play the actual Uncharted games. Haha.

The more people that pay the minimum price for Indie Royale, the higher the price goes. That's how it works.. it's like the opposite of Humble Bundle. The more you pay, the more the price drops. That's why the price goes up so suddenly.

Oh! Now it makes sense. I just saw the last 5 or so purchases on the page and it showed like 4 of 5 people paying $10, so I assumed it worked the same as the HIB.

Bah. I was out all day and didn't know until a few hours ago that Indie Royale went live. I keep watching the price yoyo between $5.50 and $5.75. Patience...
That's a good list and about the same, It is always funny how most of the one handed games are older games, not just because it is on GoG, It seems turn based systems have become harder and harder to find.
I blame online multiplayer for this. With the exception of Civilization, most games and game types that have historically been turn-based have "evolved" to be constantly moving, unpausable. Even games that don't include a multiplayer aspect have shifted to this just because it's become the norm.

I'm the same way. I usually purchase almost any adventure game on sale but I'm definitely going to have to pass on this one.

Anyhow, Hero Academy looks really good to me. But at $15 for the whole package I'll have to pass for now. I will definitely buy it if they have a decent sale though.
Missed the start of the Indie Royale....I just cant bring myself to buy them if im paying over 5. Looks like another I'm passing on unless it drops
Whoever spots it dropping under $5 should buy about 10 copies to share.

Agreed $4 is high enough as it is unless the unlikely scenario that you absolutely love every game in it to death. $5+ is just a deal breaker.

It's also annoying that you pretty much have to camp out at your computer and catch it right at the beginning or you can kiss $4 goodbye. I know there's a chance at a dip but that requires camping out again. Their whole system is fucking annoying. And to launch on a day that isn't their usual and on a weekend to boot just makes it worse. :bomb:
Exactly how does GFWL corrupt a save file?
Damn can you call it or what Hal?

Anyway it's a cloud save so there's potential for things to go wrong between their servers and your computer. It can happen with Steam cloud save too but I've seen it reported more frequently with GFWL.

However to make things easier for the 'I don't believe there's anything wrong with GFWL' types just go ahead and think that every complaint about it is lies and really just one big conspiracy to smear Microsoft.

PS for what it's worth I do think Microsoft makes some good things. You will have to pry the wireless 360 driving wheel from me cold, dead hands. :)

I've caught it a few times at 3.99 when it first launched, normally I'd be at work reading these forums and just happen to catch it. Next time I catch one at launch I will buy like 10 copies.

Ya it's a really weird trend, the worst is the move to unpausable games it is the one thing that basically renders Dark/Demon souls unplayable now for me. I really hope this isn't the way of the future game studios blocking pausing and then claiming this makes the game, "Hardcore" and therefore don't worry its not for the "casuals."

I seem to remember Diablo 3 even when in single player online you couldn't pause the game either. It makes you think who the designers think are playing the games, it is kind of a insult to think the developers truly think their players have no life and so therefore wont need to worry about pausing.

I'm kind of disappointed with Hero Academy. Asynchronous turn based doesn't work nearly as well on PC especially when there is no notification system to let you know when it's your turn unless you keep the game running in the background.

Hero Academy is FREE on Iphone which makes the money they're asking on PC seem really, really silly. I know they don't stand a chance of the 5+ million install base on Iphone but come on. At least convince me there's a value add on PC

You're basically paying 5 bucks for the TF2 team and avatars.

Also, anyone who is interested, your account links purchases across platforms. So if you don't care about the avatars (no added gameplay value) or the hats in TF2, buy the teams on iOS after you buy the game on Steam.

Hahaha! You have to be kidding me, right? Aren't they like $2 on Iphone? That's brilliant!

Also, if we make a new Steam thread I'm just gonna say we need to outlaw indie games entirely from post one

It isn't like Ipad ports being much cheaper on Ipad is new.

Off the top of my head/ quick googling:

Hero Academy
Fieldrunners
Snuggle Truck
Everything Popcap makes
Upcoming Baldur's Gate remake
Flight Control
Galcan Fusion
World of Goo
Osmos
Spacechem
Sword & Sworcery
Galaxy on Fire 2 HD (which is releasing next week on PC)

All MUCH cheaper. Don't get me wrong, the DLC for HA is overpriced, but I don't really see why the base game's price is getting so much attention.

I feel your pain, been moving since Thursday myself. Almost done though, but I've really been wishing I could game but by the time I am done for the night I just kinda curl up in my bed and watch some netflix and then pass out instead of doing so.

Also really disappointed with Indie Royal again. Seems like their past couple of bundles have been kinda meh in my opinion anyway.

semi-related. I didn't see it mentioned here yet, and i didn't see the indie gala thread, but GalaPoints now have a purpose!

Finally the Indiegala store ( or simply GalaStore ) has arrived! Indiegala store is the new online store developed by indiegala team , with the mission to bring you always the best deals
and deliver the best promotions! More than 50 titles are present on the store right now and dozens of new titles will come every week!

On the store you can buy games at cheap prices using your galapoints!

and the site/FAQ is http://store.indiegala.com/faq-galastore

...but it's currently down. the drift is that GalaPoints points are redeemable for steam games. time to start hosting bundles y'all

does anybody know how many episodes "adam's venture" will have? is this the last one? seems like a good game but i dont want to get burned buying the 1st 3 and then another episode or 2 or a complete game will be released after a couple of months.

Not only that, they encrypt saves against a private key generated *per computer*, so if you try to move saves between the *same* Xbox account to another computer, they just won't show up. Not error, just not show up.

Really gave me a headache a couple months ago, until I learned where the private key I needed to copy was.

No need to worry because there are only three games in the series. The third game is the end of the series.

It was talked about a few days ago.. Sorry to burst your bubble but.. long story short, it's not as great as you think. Limits on how many points can be used per purchase, etc. :(

Every time I've visited that damn store it's been down for maintenance. Does nobody have an online storefront best practices list? I mean just everyone and their dog has one and most of them can manage to keep them up!
So would you recommend starting off with the new series? Or the old new one as I heard a lot of fans complaining about this new show IIRC.
Um, I'd probably start with the new series to see if you like it, unless of course you're one of those OCD people (like me ;)) that usually needs to start a TV series from the beginning, then I'd say go for it. But for anyone else I would reccommend starting with the new series, not because it is in anyway better (it has its ups and downs like any series, though I warn you some episodes are downright embarrassing), but because it's generally more accessible than the older series episodes. All of the new series are on Blu ray and DVD, where as a lot of the older series' episodes have yet to be released, further more, many of the earliest episodes of the first two doctor's seasons have been fully or partially destroyed due to the BBC's unfortunate habit of wiping tapes back then. There are restorations online, "photo plays" done by fans that piece any surviving footage/still shots with the soundtracks, but unless you become a devout fan I'd say skip those, they can be rather tedious to most, but rewarding to those who enjoy any of Big Finish's Doctor Who audioplays.
eastx, can we start working on a V5 thread? This one is getting more than a little long in the tooth.
eastx hasn't posted here in quite a while, I am just quoting this so he sees it perhaps.
Thanks, eastx! Made a new thread.

This, the fourth post of the thread, has me wondering why we need to start a new thread again right now. Or is the new software not in place yet? I can see where Cheapy would have posted this assuming that this thread wouldn't reach this size as quickly as it has...

I am surprised. I saw this Indie Royale and thought that I would only play Sol, so why buy it. Usually I throw in for Indie Royale because the games seem alright, but these games are not my thing.

Then again it's a good thing seeing I spent a crapload of money in gas/food this week no thanks to the venue of the concert fest I went to charged out the ass. So saving me some money I guess :D.

I'm watching the Indie Royale price steadily decrease ($5.34 now), but I'm also listening to the album that comes with it at the $8.00 level and it's really growing on me. Bah. I wish the album level would decrease with the minimum.

Still looking to buy the bundle alone if/when it drops to below five.
how did the bundle min already become $5 :hot:
must have missed it when it was posted
It shot up super fast. I refreshed the IndieRoyale page on a whim around 6:10 and it was at $3.99 and I picked it up and posted. Then like 15-20 min I refreshed it again for the hell of it and it was already around $4.64.

Agreed 100%. I really wish they would either just announce the day/time the bundles will go live a day or 2 in advance or just bring back the pre-order system they used to have.
Remember the good ol' days of $2 preorders?
it is sad how long ago those seem!

There have been such a cluster of bundles lately it is weird to step back and realize that the first Humble Bundle was just about 2 years ago.
Always use an offline profile for GFWL. It's the most problem-free experience of this malware.
No chance of corrupted saves because as far as I can tell they are not encrypted like the online ones and are stored locally only. Also the client doesn't need updating and doesn't get stuck in update loops.
Yes, you don't get achievements or DLC, but do you really value your gamerscore more than a more problem-free experience? I wouldn't want to take my chances with potentially progress destroying issues to get achievements. Then again I'm not in the xbox ecosystem at all and live in an "unsupported" xbox/GFWL country.
I just use Gamesave Manager and back up all my saves after I finish playing. If anything goes wrong I have several backups I can restore and get my saves back. Has worked great so far, and really saved my ass a few times. This wouldn't work if the save was ONLY stored in a cloud, I'm under the impression GFWL keeps it both locally and in the cloud, and synchronizes them? I think I have it set to online so I can get achievements and then I back up locally.

The problem with both of these is that it corrupted as I was playing. As best as I can describe without spoiling anything I got up to the boss after wiping out the surrounding area, dying as I wiped out the last enemy. The boss never spawned. I went back to the main menu to reload the game and it said my save was corrupt. This is also a huge reason why we need more than just a single autosave allowed.

Several people having the same issue, including two getting it corrupted at the end (electrical is end). http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=31934984

This sucks, but it sounds to me like a game specific issue, not GFWL. Not to make light of your situation, trust me I get it; but it doesn't mean its GFWL's fault specifically.

If it makes you feel any better, you are not the only one with the issue for ITSP; seems to be a few others on the steam forums with a similar complaint.

EDIT: And I see that you just added what I said but...wait, what!? you added text to your post yet there is not edited notation?!
EDIT2: Same for me too...weird, I would have sworn CAG had post edit notations....
EDIT3: Wait, I'm not crazy...but what the heck then?

It might not be GFWL entirely but there's no way to know unless GFWL is removed. Until then it's reasonably safe to blame GFWL due to it having record of very similar problems before.

I ended up marking the game as completed in my mind and uninstalled. I'd rather do it next time than redo the entire game right now, fun as it was.

For the editing, it's never said I edit unless I type in the reason.

Not to start an argument, but I still don't think that is a fair claim. Many of the other problems reported are due to user error. I'm not saying GFWL is perfect, but with my experience (8x retail 3x digital gfwl games) I've never had a problem that I wasn't to blame for (exception being what I've mentioned alot in this thread, Halo 2). I will however agree that I know NOTHING about GFWL when mixed with Steam; I would really prefer is people complaining about it acknowledged if their issues were Steam+GFWL not GFWL on its own.
