Try to loop around the enemy base so you're grabbing from behind and heading straight back to your base. And if you want to soldier cap, throw on egocentric (less self-damage) and use spinfusor jumps to build up a lot of speed before you hit the stand.

All the better for me to clothesline-splatter you with, naturally.

EDIT: And yes, turrets badly need shielding. The pathfinder shotgun never got buffed, but pathfinders got an alternate shotgun that is pretty damn good. The LAR is still standard for most people, I think.
