MS preview prepares for “updated Xbox 360 disc format”

Microsoft has opened registrations for an Xbox 360 System Update Preview program in the US to prepare for an “updated Xbox 360 disc format”.

The firm is looking for US-based participants for a public preview to help the firm prepare for an updated Xbox 360 disc format which will help the firm “improve” it’s products.
As part of the preview program, folks will receive a copy of Halo: Reach along with other possible rewards.
To get in on this, you must visit the Microsoft Connect site and sign in with the Windows Live ID that is connected to your Xbox Live Gamertag. Once you complete the survey that is presented to you, the Connect site will provide program related updates and you will receive a mail once the selection process is completed.
Here’s more information from Major Nelson:

 • We’re looking for multiple thousands of participants, so your chances of making it in are good.
 • This opportunity is open to Xbox LIVE Members in US region only.
 • To avoid any problems, read the survey carefully and double check all the information you provide.
 • While both Xbox LIVE Gold and Silver members can sign up, priority will be given to Gold members in the selection process.
 • Due to disc distribution limitations, this beta it will be limited to residents of the United States only.

This is only for the US and also if you get in you get a free copy of Halo Reach and they say some secret stuff.

The signup is on Major Nelson's Blog.

Will this be like last time and make it so i won't be able to be in a party with my friends until the official update if i do get accepted?

Edit: I applied anyway.

I signed up but once i confirmed my e-mail address and clicked continue their page error'd..guess i'll be waiting for that to be fixed.

*edit* nvm signed up and entered

Thanks Darth RaLLe this will save me some money on not having to buy Halo: Reach and also check out the latest update from Microsoft.

Too bad if we are chosen we can't talk about the update in detail due to the contract we all had to sign :(

Not in the US so can't sign up but would like to state Party Chat should be safe the main reason it stopped working last time with those not in the preview was because there was a different Voice Codec being used this time round I doubt its being change again already so should be safe.

^^ word! Be fast or die trying ..

.. too bad I can't enter cause I'm ze german ;)
but oh well, CAG offered me a LOT of possibilies /contests and I know many gamers here want to participate, thats why I posted directly here after I saw the twitter-msg *g*

I suppose I'm in. Hopefully it won't kill party chat for those with the preview like it did last time. I'm assuming it won't since I don't think the audio codec is changing.

I wonder if the copy of Halo: Reach is going to be a game download from the Marketplace. I already have Reach but no interest in taking part anyway.

I'm going to sign up but I'm a little worried about getting a new dashboard - will it still function like the old one? Can I play on line with friends, etc.?

EDIT: bah, can't sign up remotely because you need your console ID and serial number.

Part of this beta is to evaluate a new disc format, I'm guessing that means they're putting new security on the discs to thwart piracy. They also say they will be mailing something out. Those two things make it seem likely that they're mailing out discs.

edit: I should also throw this in.

I haven't checked today, but I know from the last beta that both the serial number and console ID are online. Login with your xbox account and you should be able to view your console serial number somewhere on the xbox support page and the console ID should be in the license transfer tool.

If you have questions, Major Nelson said to leave a comment on the post about the Preview, and he will make another post to answer them later tonight.

this is correct.. one is on xbox.com/drm: scroll down and click start the license transfer process now and your console id will be in the pop-up

The other is on xbox.com/support: click my account on the upper right hand corner, then my devices, then start a repair request, and it should be there.
Damn it...I need my X360's SN and ID. Hopefully I'll be able to register when I get home from work.
Same boat for me too wish it remembered that from the last beta program.

Thanks a bunch, Ralle! Don't know my chances, considering I'm silver, but they're higher than they would have been.

They are testing a new disc format so maybe they are shipping Reach on the new format.

Do you guys think it would be ok to register multiple 360s from the same address? Me and my brother both have our own 360 and LIVE account, but I have a feeling if I register with my college address, anything except first class mail might get returned to sender.
Says "Bad Request" when I try to do the survey.
Yeah, I don't know what the survey is. It showed me that when I first clicked the link about an hour ago. Then, I went to grab a bite to eat, and when I tried again, it was just the regular sign up page with drop down boxes asking things like "Does anyone in your house work for an Xbox competitor?" After that it was just Serial/Console ID, name, and address. Not sure what happened to the survey, but good riddance. :)

...do we know you get a boxed retail copy of Reach? I would not be surprised if it were just the download version since it's in GoD now. Wouldn't be much use to me since I already have it.

I suppose it could be a code that lets you download it, but I don't think MS would be that dumb, there would be thousands of copies of Reach out there that people would be practically giving away. I bet it's a DL that's tied to your account.

Signed up, thanks OP. How long are these updates usually in the beta stage for? And how long does it take to be released as an official update after the beta testing is over?
