CompUSA closing all remaining stores. Expect deals/clearances ahead.

CAGiversary!
Here's the techcrunch article on it. It's gone through the wire and just hit CNN/AP, but I prefer TC anyhow.

http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/12/07/compusa-goes-into-the-deadpool-good/

I don't know if there will be any good deals or what the clearance percentage will start out at, but at least some people can get ready to grab some of the good stuff. Do the current stores still carry/sell Bawls? That would probably be the only thing that I could actually want from them since it will take an infinite amount of time until the big clearance starts happening, and by then most of the good stuff will have been taken anyway. Oh well, they were a crappy store anyway.

I didn't see it posted anywhere and did a quick search.

the compusa by my job closed a few months back and they had CRAZY deals on ALL videogames. something along the lines of half off all video games.

...naturally i learned of this AFTER it had already closed. will be keeping my eyes peeled for other locations!

The last round of CompUSA store closings wasn't that great around here. Anything worthwhile sold out during the puny discount phase (which pretty much only brought the prices in line with what you should have paid for the items in the first place). By the megadiscount phase it was down to dumb crap like stupid Ipod accessories and other equally worthless stuff.

Not expecting much here either but I will happily await reports of anything better than "10% off all video games and accessories".

That was at the end of it. For the most part it started off with 20% discount off regular prices, which in most cases were still MSRP on most games. I saw Jade Empire, which had been out for awhile at that point, going for 20% off at $50. Hardly a deal, but people were buying it thinking they had just stolen money from the store. CompUSA was/is such a numb nuts company. They closed the only decent one in town and the only store that was actually making them any money in favor of leaving the oldest store in town (one that has sat at the same location for 20 or so years) that hardly had customers and hardly made any money. They just never made any sense.

Like I said, the best and probably the only thing I want from them, if they still carry it, is Bawls. Anyone know?

That sucks. Looking at that link and the subsequent comments about CompUSA, I have no idea why the store is garnishing so much hate. It was actually my preferred store for electronics. Yeah, they rarely had gaming deals, but as far as computer accessories go in regards to price and selection, they couldn't be beat. I got my Olevia HDTV through them for a lot cheaper than any other B&M store had it, and they had a reasonable warranty plan as well (I wonder how my warranty will be handled now...).

the last compusa in my area that closed had so called "deals" in which they jacked up the prices $5-10 above retail and had it on sale for like 10 percent off. And there were plenty of retards buying things like mad lol.

Closest Comp USA is 180 miles away. Anyways, everything is pretty much cleaned out by the time the discounts get decent.

closing down? whatever.

kinda like when tower records started shutting down around here, like the dvds and all were pretty much steep. so i didn't bother getting stuff, as some of the merchendise would probably gone back to vendors & distributors, bought off by other distributors, etc.
Man, I still had 2 1/2 more years left on my warranty for my TV. But I guess there will be no more COMPUSA to exchange it to.
Go make some noise to the manager. They will probably at least partially refund you for the warranty you paid for. I'm assuming you paid for an extended warranty as I don't know many warranties that come 2.5+ years without some extra cash. Good luck, and keep your eyes open for the magazine rack :)

There are some deals to be had though. I got my Samsung 32" LCD HDTV from Comp USA when they closed one of my local stores here in the St. Louis area. They had a Core 360 for $200 (this was when the Core was $300) and all the Microsoft PC software at 20-50% off.

If you're cautious about price, they should still have the PC's internet working because I checked the TV's price on Amazon before I bought the TV. Just do that when you go there.

One CompUSA store closed in my area last year. The games were only 10% off even though they had a huge banner advertising store closing 50-70% off outside. I didn't bother checking the last couple of weeks.

CompUSA had some interesting deals. I liked their wacky buy 1 regular priced new release game get a clearance priced game free, or buy 1 clearance get 1 clearance free, or 50% off all clearance prices, etc.

They had good deals you just had to show up during the two days the good sale was actually going on.

they offer everything @ like 20% off initially, and then they'll go as high as 85%. certain items like video games and high end electronics are never over 35%

anything good is gone w/ the 20%

it's usually a good time to get like a wall mount or decks, or computer/camera stuff for cheap.

That's pretty much what I've found at all (not just CompUSA) store closings I've been to. Yeah, you may bump into the odd 'deal' that everyone else passed over but, for the most part, it's all just 20% off MSRP on just about everything.

Generally speaking, you get better deals on the Clearance aisles at stores than you do at store closings.

Aw shit. I actually liked mine. They've got a shitton of games at 50% off, guess I'll go snag a couple before the hoarders swoop in.

In fact, just got a couple of 3 month Live cards for 50% off last week.

I worked in the business division of CompUSA a few years back. Every manager i worked for was a dick. Glad they all got what was coming to them. The company treated employees and customers like shit. Sweet justice.

In my experience, CompUSA had a terrible store layout and customer service, but it always had some kick-ass deals. I remember I scored the 360 of Oblivion for $45 the day it came out.

That's the truth. They used to have a kickass 10 dollar keyboard I would pick up sometimes. I went into CC the other days and it was 40 dollars for the cheapest keyboard, I was like fuck that I miss CompUSA
I wonder what kinda clearance/liquidating sales they gonna have...
5% off for the first six months. That's usually what happens when store closings are handled by seperate store closing firms. They advertise the hell out of absolutely nothing, and all the suckers in town come in and clean the place out thinking they're getting great deals.

The linked article suggests the closings will happen son after the holidays. Not that the deals wil get better faster because of that. Most closings are done by big holding companies that want us to help pay for the crap company the just bought.

I say keep your crappy 20% off second rate games.

I do have to get my laptop serviced before they disappear, though! Still have 6 months on my extendo.:bomb:

Crap. That will be the end of my getting a new Ipod via the extended warranty every 23 months by claiming the battery was dead on the Ipod. I better get up there and get another warranty replacement before the store shuts down.

Don't for get about BD, HD-DVD, and DVD deals too. I missed out on some game deals during the last closings, but I got some great movie deals.

Man, I don't know what some of you are talking about. When our CompUSA closed, they had LOTS of good stuff at heavily discounted prices.

The games' discounts DO increase with all of the other stuff in the store. When they got to 30%, 40% and then 50% off, they still had decent stuff, and I bought each time. Got a 360 Core for 20% off, but if I'd waited a day or two longer, could have had it for 30% off (they sold out shortly afterward). Lots of computer software. My fiancee bought one of the Toshiba laptop display models, and got a great deal on it--40% off plus an additional discount for being a display. We also got some cheap accessories; if you want iPod cases or car chargers for ANYTHING you will be very, very pleased.

Overall, we gave those guys a ton of money when they were closing, and we haven't regretted it yet.

I wanted to buy a Mac, but they shipped them and some other items away before liquidation. This time they won't be able to ship them away for you lucky ones. I miss CUSA. If you watched them closely you'd a killer deal every other week or so. . . Now I won't even be able to price match their website.
Man, I don't know what some of you are talking about. When our CompUSA closed, they had LOTS of good stuff at heavily discounted prices.
It all depends on your area and how the clearance is run.

The CompUSA that closed by me had maybe one good deal -- you could get Vista cheap -- but everything else was sold way before the discount was anything to write home about. Many items -- video games and printer ink cartridges -- actually sold at prices higher than the Target down the street or a typical sale. By the end of the clearance, they had only the worst videogames at the highest prices. Complete waste of time.

That said, I killed at the Tower clearance, getting a ton of good CDs for $1 or less. Timing, and your local competition, are everything.

"Complete waste of time" pretty much sums up my experiences with CompUSA. They were good, years ago. I mean like 15 years ago. Then they declined completely, full of overpriced merchandise, sale items that were never in stock, rebates up the wazoo, and a complete lack of understanding of their products and markets. Their DVD and game sections could not have been run any worse, a collosal misfire of ignorance and apathy.

I'd mourn, but they died at least a decade ago. Someone just finally removed the life support.

shit i remember that

Hmmm. I'll have to keep an eye out for possibly decent deals. I'm not in any way surprised to see CrapUSA go, though. Mine rarely had anything at worthwhile prices.
I worked in the business division of CompUSA a few years back. Every manager i worked for was a dick. Glad they all got what was coming to them. The company treated employees and customers like shit. Sweet justice.
I hear that. I worked for a very short time in the small business sales department, and I could tell it would be a horrible experience, so I simply got out before anything bad happened to me. The account execs pretty much had a smooth time of it, but all of the account managers got their asses reemed out every, single moment of every, single day. You didn't sale a high margin item. Yelled at. You didn't sell any accessories with it. Yelled at. You didn't sell them TAP. Yelled at.

All my local ones already closed but I already miss them a lot. Their going out of business sale was horrible but their regular in store clearances were amazing. Over the past 2 - 3 years I picked up tons of games for under $10 (PSP games for as low as $6 like Twisted Metal, God of War for $10 when it was still $49.99 everywhere else etc.), Nintendo Monopoly for $9.99, PSP games for $12.50 when they were $39.99 elsewhere and so on.

Since those deals, I have yet to see a decent blowout on games at any B&M store other than the occasional deal at Sears or K-Mart.

going to miss my compusa. it was always convenient to have a local store that carried computer building accessories like fans, cables, etc. Sure newegg and others sell this stuff for cheaper, but they can't get it to me in 15 minutes.

Exactly.

The one near me closed when they closed over half their stores like 6 months ago. Going out of bussiness sale sucked, even at like 60% off all their stuff was more expensive than other stores. :(

Same here, they raise the prices buy a few bucks, then add a small discount.

Some random buyer, "10% off software, thats a super deal" buys immediately.

With the way people are trying to rip them off, it won't be long before they close their doors too.

Ha, I worked in the exact same job last summer and had the exact same experience. It was the worst job I have ever had. Did you have to do all the checkouts through IMS? Jesus, fucking archaic system.
And don't get me started on TAP, I knew I was leaving soon so I didn't even try to sell it usually, it was such a rip-off. Why buy extra protection when the manufacturer warranty is already a good one? Oh, and my account exec was a major douche, sounds like a common trend in CompUSA management.

I picked up NFS:MW for 360 - $14. They had Viva Pinata for $7.50 earlier in the week, but it already got taken.

These aren't blowout specials, just some that have been going for a week or so. Guess the manager had a clue.
