February 15, 2008 - After years in development, the live-action feature film version of Akira Toriyama's manga and anime classic Dragonball is now in production. 20th Century Fox will release the movie -- referred to as either Dragon Ball Z, Dragonball, or simply DBZ by different publications -- on August 15, 2008. Here's what we know about the highly anticipated feature film thus far:

PRODUCTION:

Fox snagged the film rights to Dragon Ball Z way back in 2002. Since then several personnel have been involved, including director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) and screenwriter Tedi Sarafian (Terminator 3). Last fall, Emmy nominee James Wong (director of the first and third Final Destination films, as well as The One) came aboard to direct Dragon Ball Z from his own screenplay.

Wong rewrote an earlier draft by Ben Ramsey (The Big Hit). Actor-filmmaker Stephen Chow (CJ7, Kung Fu Hustle) is producing the film. Chow informed the Oriental Morning Post last November, "I have been a Dragon Ball fan for a long time. ... The airy and unstrained story leaves much room for creation."

Filming on DBZ began last December in Mexico and Los Angeles. Final Destination's Robert McLachlan is the director of photography, with Bruton Jones (Underworld) serving as production designer, Patricio M. Farrell (Right at Your Door) as art director, and Mayes C. Rubeo (Apocalypto) as costume designer.

The special effects are being handled by Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc., which has worked on the Spider-Man films. Ariel Velasco-Shaw (300, Freddy vs. Jason) is serving as Dragonball's visual effects supervisor.

THE PLOT:

While story details are being kept under wraps, The Hollywood Reporter's synopsis says Dragonball "centers on an adult humanoid alien named Goku (Chatwin) who, after discovering he was sent to Earth to destroy the population, tries to fulfill the wish of his dying grandfather and collect all seven of the world's mystical Dragon Balls to keep them out of the hands of the evil aliens." Variety added that Bulma's "father's Dragon Ball is stolen by Piccolo."

THE CAST:
Justin Chatwin will play Goku:

Teaser Trailer To Be Shown 3/14/08 with the movie Doomsday

There really hasn't been any shots of the characters in costume...I'll update as more info is revealed. Hope they do the series justice but we'll see.

Damn, no Wesley Snipes as Piccolo? This movie is going to be worse than the Hong Kong live action version of Dragon Ball, I just hope they make a reference to "over 9000!" and "mondo cool".

What about Vegeta, Trunks, and Gohan? I've never followed the series but I'm pretty sure those are major characters.
That's not saying much.
hence why I said this new one can't suck any worse. I'll be seeing it though, big fan of Chow Yun-Fat
there was another dragonball movie?
tagged.

I have no expectations, but Chow yun Fat as Roshi could be a very good time. The link to the trailer didnt work for me, so at this point, I'll hold off until I see a trailer. But the fight scenes in The One were pretty sick.

The reason i think this movie will be awesome is because no one expects it to be any good.

It can't be as bad as we expect it to be.

(ill probably eat my words this August)

You're right, it could be worse.

People, do realize that this is a Dragonball movie, not Dragonball Z.

Dragonball = happy-go-lucky roadtrip round the world to find Dragon Balls

DBZ = 12 hour long fights with little-to-no story or reference to Dragon Balls

DB GT = A horrible mish-mash of DB & DBZ that's 10x shittier than the other two series combined.

How can anyone expect this to be good? Like seriously.

This has the director of Final Destination, The One, and Final Destination 3.

The cinematographer, Robert McLachlan, is best known for King's Ransom, Final Destination 3, and Black Christmas.

Goku and Piccolo are completely miscast.

And the story sounds like shit.

And look at the writer for this.

Seriously that's the writer.

i wish this would be Dragonball z instead of Dragonball. I remember watching Dragonball (after being a fan of Dragonball z) and realizing how boring it was.

12 hour long epic battles are so much better than a little boy searching for balls

Wrong.

Because they don't battle for 12 hours. Sure the battle may last for 12 hours, but the actual fighting will take up 10 minutes of the film.

The other 11 hours and 50 minutes will be reserved for people powering up while the rest of cast looks constipated and the good guys and villains mock each other, waiting until Goku finally shows up in the last 5 minutes to save everyone.

The final minute will be reserved for credits.

Yea call me crazy but I'd put a Japanese guy as lead. And maybe its just me but I think Piccolo should be played by a Black dude.

Wesley would still be better

This film should have all been Goku vs. The Red Ribbon Army. It could have had some badass fantasy war scenes mixed in with the dragonball hunt.
Why they'd cast a caucasian in the role of an asian character is beyond me. Couldn't they get Jet Li or something?
I don't know, was Goku strictly asian? Or more generally, were saiyans (saiyajin for you anal bastids) strictly asian?

But I do agree, no one can cosplay as well as those Japanese people.

Between the fact that Goku doesn't need to drive, he appears to be wearing black lipstick.
I'll bet $12893512390857 that if car behind him is indeed his, it says NIMBUS on the license plate.

Goku was not Asian. Infact, Asia didn't explicitly exist in the DB world. Chinese culture was hinted at with the foods and the clothes, but other than that it was a completely fictional world. The only character that had any Asian features was Yajirobe and maybe Android 17 ( his eyes were kinda slanted and he had black hair, but he was also kinda dark so maybe he was Inuit, or just a fictional character in a cartoon, lol i dunno ).

It just seems right to have an Asian actor play in an anime inspired movie, even though most of the characters don't look Asian...unless you consider big eyes Asian.

And just in case I don't get too subjective, that one India-inspired character fron Dragonball could be considered Asian, I guess.

Also, in during " it's just a cartoon being turned into an inevitably bad movie that the Japanese fans will laugh at hysterically "

Still do not want. Let me know when a trailer is released so I can have a good laugh.

To be fair, The One was pretty good, but lets not mention Final Destination. Also, DB was boring up until he fought Piccolo at the tournament.

i saw the first db movie in a clearnence shelf when my mall still had a suncoast movie store for9.99. think it was still there when the store shut down.

Curse of the Blood Rubies.

I bought it back before there were fansubs.

Then I probably bought $500 worth of DBZ VHS tapes from a small shop in Chinatown (Canal Street / Elizabeth Center). Each tape only had 3 episodes and the regular DB episodes damn near unwatchable.

I used to turn around and sell the $5 tapes on Ebay for $100 when Ebay was new.

Those were the days.
