Since no one else decided to start this up yet, I figured I'd jump in and do it myself since there is a weekend coming up tomorrow.

I was just about to create this thread. Oh well!

I think this new year is starting off right. On the way to work this morning, I hit a single sale, but it was worth stopping:

These were in a box, along with some DVDs; at first, I didn't see them because I took a cursory glance from my car and considered driving on, but thought better of myself and got out. The Famicom games were 50¢ each and Tetris was $3. I asked if they'd take $4 for everything, which they accepted.
 
We got another 8-10 inches here in mass today still snowing right now too. I'm counting down the days though!
 
Its snowing here right now and its January so its not like there will be any sales for a while, but thanks for starting the thread anyways.
 
Snowing here too lol. I'd figure I'd start it anyways. Theirs a few garage sale shops I go to in the winter and some of the auction companys like hosting estate sales so I do get a few sales in the winter.

Greetings from the Last Frontier!! It's not as easy to find great gaming deals up here in Alaska as it is down in the Lower 48 but I'm not giving up yet. In fact, I had some great finds earlier today.

Stopped by an indoor flea market and scored a factory-sealed refurbished PS1 which was marked $30 but my brother and I both paid for it so I only chipped in $20. He got a second controller for $2 with the change left over.

At a thrift store for $2 total:

Yeah, it's been simply deplorable here in the southland. Low 70's since just after Christmas. Still a little bit of snow left in the local mountains from the 2 or so days of showers we've had in the last month though, which was the extent of winter's wrath thus far.

Seriously...winter has entirely forgotten us. It seemed to be here for all of a week in mid December, and now it feels like spring. Plenty of yard sales year round...unfortunately most of them suck!

The guy I bought the PSP from told me it didn't work, and wanted 10 bucks. I got it down to $6, telling him I just wanted it for parts. I get home, plug it in and sure enough, it doesn't turn on. However, if you've ever let a PSP battery run all the way down, you know that you need to leave it plugged in for several minutes before it'll power up. I did, and *ta-da!*, it came on. Works great, despite being pretty worn all over. Also, that Spongebob UMD is just there to show it works; it didn't come with the PSP.

Also, do you guys get yard sales where people are selling new stuff? I see at least two of those every weekend; most commonly it's people selling cleaning supplies, personal hygiene stuff (toothpaste, deodorant, etc.) and more. The weekend before last, I ran into one where the guy was also selling a bunch of budget/value titles for PS2 and Wii. 99% of it was trash, but those A Boy and His Blobs were in there. He wanted $12 for each game, but I offered 20 bucks for both and he took it. I of course asked if he had anymore but he said that was it. They're not such an amazing find after the price dropped on it recently, but still, hard to beat.

The past couple of weekends were quite warm and really brought out the sales. A lot of the stuff I found was very close to my house, which is really rare; most of the time, I find the good stuff a little farther away.
 
The sales with the new stuff are likely people from slickdeals who overstocked from their slickdealing ways. I wouldn't buy from these people, as it just teaches them to hoard more because they can make a profit off it. I have no problem with selling items on ebay but these people buy up the entire stock of toothpaste at CVS, and I would be pretty pissed if I needed a couple tubes of toothpaste for myself and could get them cheap, and I walked in to learn that some hoarder bought them all up and that it would not be restocked within the sale period.

I am not sure who would want to hoard personal care items either, that's the lowest of the low. You really, really don't need to buy more than you can use. Your taking away from those who need them when you do that. Some personal care items are essentials too, so its not like we are talking about games which are non essential items to life.

Its either that, or the stuff is stolen or expired or just about to expire, if you live in a high crime area, you can probably guess if its stolen or not. I am sure retailers have a pretty strict policy about destroying expired or almost expired personal care products though. There was a house here selling some brand new things, and I know they were stolen.
 
I don't understand how guys can find so much stuff! The best thing I've ever found is a glacier colored gameboy advance with no battery cover for like $3. Other than that its all complete crap or waaaaaay overpriced. Does anyone have any tips for finding things?

I know they're not slickdealers; that much is certain. I'm thinking the soon-to-expire theory is the most plausible. As for the games, I think this was just one lucky needle-in-a-haystack of crap titles, and the guy was selling overflow from his reselling business. It would make sense that the budget titles were coming from huge lots of expiring products, since places like CVS and Walgreens often sell garbage Wii and PS2 titles.

If you'll search the older yard sale threads, you will definitely find a wealth of advice on this same subject, but here's my own thoughts and strategies for successful yard saling:

Persistence, almost saintly patience, and a willingness to uncover every stone are my own keys to success.

Always look slowly and carefully: that box full of old cassettes may be hiding a treasure-trove of NES/SNES cartridges just below the surface. I didn't mention it in my above post because it's come up often enough in the past, but most of the things I purchased could not be seen from the street and probably half of those were in boxes or heaped on a blanket in the yard. Remember that the same people who are willing to sell killer games for a buck or two don't care about them and think they're worthless; they'll be displayed accordingly. Check everything.

Go every day of the week that you can (when there are sales). Don't give up when you don't find anything for weeks in a row -- the one Saturday where you say to yourself, "Screw it, I'm not going out today" is precisely the day someone puts out a Playstation with 6 RPGs for 10 bucks, guaranteed. I know that's sort of a Murphy's Law-type thing, but having a good attitude when you don't find anything is going to help motivate you to try again next weekend. Just playing the odds, if you keep at it long enough, you're bound to find something fantastic before too long.

Hit more sales than you've been. If you've averaged 20 sales in the past, double it; spend a couple extra hours tripling it. Expand your coverage and make a morning/early afternoon of it. Bring snacks and some decent CDs in the car with you when you go, and hopefully bring a friend or sibling along for the ride so you can talk and joke as you scour. I look forward to every weekend; partly for the sales, but mostly because my best friend and I have a really fun time, even when we don't find anything. If you're riding your bike or going it on-foot, I salute you: you're hardcore and the odds are probably against you, but the above tenets still hold true. Pump those legs and don't give up!

Also, to get that price from good to great, do not be afraid to haggle. This is a yard sale after all, not Amazon.com. Be polite but firm, and be prepared to (gently) point out flaws and condition when justifying your asking price.

Aside from all that, you'll find your own rhythm if you keep at it long enough.

That would probably conflict with retailers policies of destroying the merchandise, but who knows, maybe some managers allow employees to take it home anyways, or the manager is taking it home themselves. Some retailers do leave perfectly good things outside of the dumpsters as well (such as Aldi's here, where they will often leave out a case of water if its just missing one bottle), so its possible these people are scouring dumpsters looking for things left outside of them and just finding a lot of it.

I thought slickdealers would be the most plausable as I saw an entire thread over there devoted to how to sell personal care products that you overstocked on..

You definitely have to look at the whole sale, and look in those boxes, because its true that you do find things in boxes that are unseen from the top. Video games are small and can get easily buried. Its happened to me many times. It helps to bring another person along who at least roughly knows what you are looking for, because they may spot something that you missed and yes that does happen as well. Don't pass up the things seen from the road either just because you think they are overpriced, I got an NES for a dollar and I could see it as I pulled up to a sale.

Going through baby toys lead to the find of a sega pico for 1$ for me. Might be worth it to look through them. People who have just had a kid will put out video games too because they don't have time to play them anymore.

Unadvertised sales are good! If you see a sign and you can read it easily, stop at the sale its advertising. These sales tend to have cheaper prices because they didn't have to pay for an ad, and thus do not have to recoup the cost of a newspaper ad. Ads are expensive in my area so we have seen a lot of unadvertised sales lately. These sales usually happen in the neighborhood of another sale.

Also look UNDER THE TABLES at church sales and at every sale, I found a whole box of colecovision stuff just sitting under there, the people running it didn't know what it was and I got the whole box for $7. Look in those empty boxes under there, there might be something in them.

If you don't like the price, and you REALLY want the item and the person is unwilling to haggle, you could try coming back at the end of the sale or the next day and try again. People tend to change their attitude when they find out nothing of theirs is selling and they have a whole lawn of stuff they have to pack up and put away especially if its been a slow day. Anyways if you really want it and you don't have to go too far to look at the item its always worth a shot.

A lot of people will also throw stuff out regardless, so if your really desperate it might help to drive down the alley on garbage day, lol. Scouring thrifts and resell shops is good too if you see stuff at sales you want but its overpriced, although it might be more overpriced at the thrift there is a chance you will find the same item that was at the sale for a lower price. For example if you saw clothes for $10 an item at a yard sale which is really overpriced but you still wanted them anyways, and you know you have a clothing resell place/thrift which sells a lot cheaper, you could check that place for the same items and chances are they will have ended up there and they will cost you a lot less money to buy from the place.

Yeah, the thing that sucks about Maine is you have to wait a few more months until yard sales start up.

Really looking forward to going yard saling this summer. This will be my second summer going, but last year I didn't find anything
 
I've just received my second PM in as many weeks, from someone asking to buy my items for the prices I have listed. Now that it's happened twice, it almost makes sense: somehow people are interpreting this thread as an "online yard sale", and thinking that I'm selling the things that I've been posting.

I guess from now on I'll have to put a disclaimer in my posts.
 
I just wish I could find someone who would be a navigator for yard sales. I hate having to navigate and drive at the same time.

And your advice on finding things is very good. Persistence is definitely the key! And if you don't find anything don't hesitate to ask if they have any video games because they might have not gotten around to putting them out yet or you might have missed them under a pile of stuff.

And yeah, that is a Winnie the Pooh pillow. :D

That does suck. My friend and I are able to cover both bases, but I could see how going it solo would be a pain, especially when it comes to making quick or last-minute driving maneuvers (any hardcore yard salers know what I'm talkinga bout; gotta be ready to turn on a dime!).

Doesn't your lil bro come with you now and then?
 
I became really skilled at those exact driving maneuvers you're talking about, ayb. Even with GPS on my phone now, it becomes pretty difficult to find places.

But I spent all last semester telling my gaming buddy about finds, etc, and it looks like he'll be joining me this year! My wife refuses to go, so I'm so excited to have someone to talk and joke with on those long Saturdays, not to mention someone who knows how to work his iPhone's GPS.
 
I go with my grandparents while they still enjoy going to yard sales to find antiques. On a good day we will hit 20 or so sales. Eventually I may go off on my own and try to get like 40+ in but for now I don't need to.

Yeah I still go with my grandmother and my mother and usually I am the navigator, they like going and they pick up the slack for what I might miss since my mom knows me so well. We can also pick out clothing for each other since we know what each other likes. This also saves time when there is a lot of stuff to go through, if you have 2 people it goes a lot faster if you go through clothing piles together.

I'm one of the IT guys at work and this showed up in our area. It was on my co-workers desk and I asked what was up with it? He states, "This was from Dann, he said it's functional however there's a huge line in the screen and he couldn't get it repaired. He said whoever fixes it can have it."

So I respond, "Sounds good, can I have a crack at it?" "Sure, be my guest."

So I take the machine and I take a look at it. It has a huge 1.5 inch white line in the screen. So I do some research and find out that it's a factory defect in this particular model. I figured I'd take it into the local Apple store and test my luck.

I walk in with the machine set it down and ask if anything could be done, the guy was quite nice and helped me even though I didn't have an appointment (I didn't know I needed one). He said that since it was a factory defect, they would replace the LCD and fix the problem for free.

All I need to do now is upgrade the RAM a bit and upgrade to Snow Leopard and I'm set.

Current specs: 1.83 Intel Core Duo and 512 megs of ram. 17" model.

So I take the machine and I take a look at it. It has a huge 1.5 inch white line in the screen. So I do some research and find out that it's a factory defect in this particular model. I figured I'd take it into the local Apple store and test my luck.

I walk in with the machine set it down and ask if anything could be done, the guy was quite nice and helped me even though I didn't have an appointment (I didn't know I needed one). He said that since it was a factory defect, they would replace the LCD and fix the problem for free.

All I need to do now is upgrade the RAM a bit and upgrade to Snow Leopard and I'm set.

Current specs: 1.83 Intel Core Duo and 512 megs of ram. 17" model.

A free iMac is an very good deal. I'm not really a Mac fan, but you can't argue with free.

Find of the day goes to the Wii. While I've seen them at yard sales before, today marks the first one I've seen at such an amazing price. Forty bucks, but the guy selling assured me it worked. He wanted $45 originally, and wouldn't go any lower than 40. I didn't know it had a game inside until I got home. I also wasn't expecting it to work, but after borrowing the AV and power cables from my "first" Wii, it fired right up. The drive is a little noisy, but games play fine. I just need to buy a second set of cables for it and I'm set.

I've never once seen the Grape N64 in the wild before, and this one is in absolutely beautiful condition. The joystick is perfect and snappy and still zeroes out nicely. I don't have that many color variants right now, so this was one of my favorite finds; the games are almost all dupes, but a nice little bonus, for the price.

Pokemon Fire Red was another first for me; my first GBA Pokemon title (I have almost every GB/GBC/DS title, but for some weird reason, no GBA).

Bummed that I probably won't go saling today, but I found enough to make up for it.
 
One more question for you garage saling experts. How do you find out about the garage sales? This early in the year there is nothing in my city's papers and there is like 1 sale a week on craigslist.

Ok, op if you are going to keep the thread this year.
Fix the links (wiki) or just paste the basic info ... basic questions like this will be answered and stop.

To find yard sales I just go to a certain area that always has a lot of them. I don't even bother with cl or the newpaper classified or anything.
